Tom Siddon
Director of
RDOS Area ‘D’
FROM THE DIRECTOR
GREETINGS FROM
GWICH’IN LAND!!
In order to meet this month’s
deadline for Skaha Matters, I am
writing my report from Inuvik in the
Western Arctic near the mouth of
the Mackenzie River. Pat and I were
invited here to join in a remarkable
weekend of celebrating the successes
and progress of the Gwich’in people
under the Gwich’in Final Settlement
Agreement. As Minister of Indian
Affairs, I had the honour to conclude
and sign this historic treaty 20 years ago, on April 22, 1992, at
Fort McPherson, NWT.
We have been treated to a wonderful weekend celebrating
this historic agreement in the communities of Aklavik, Ft.
McPherson, Tsiighetchic, and Inuvik, complete with traditional
jigging and round dancing, feasting on caribou and bannick and
games with the Gwich’in families. What a great experience!
Pat and I even won fi rst place in the jive contest!
CLEAN-UP TIME - I want to begin by congratulating John
Haygarth and his small group of volunteers for the clean-up
project and re-sodding which John carried out around the
old hotel site in Kaleden. A big load of old bushes, roots and
railway ties were hauled away to the dump on April 18th. Our
historic shore-line landmark will now be a wonderful back drop
for summer events and family fun at Pioneer Park in Kaleden.
Thanks for taking this initiative John!
Ditto thanks to Diane Schlamp and her well-organized team
from the Okanagan Falls Town Centre Committee and students
from the Elementary School. Working with support from
Pitch-In Canada, the Ministry of Transportation, ARGO Road
Maintenance and downtown businesses, a one day “blitz” of
the Falls was carried out on Friday, April 27th. Hard-working
crews cleaned up weed-patches, litter and other unsightly
remnants of winter around the community. Congratulations to
Diane, the school students and all of the volunteers for a job
well done!
DOGGIE DO - DOGGIE DON’T - Speaking of clean-ups, I
have been approached by some residents from Heritage Hills
and Kaleden with complaints about the thoughtlessness of
dog walkers in their communities who allow their pets to leave
“deposits” along public street sides, walk ways and private front
yards. There is no excuse for this inconsiderate negligence.
Please carry a baggie or two and do not leave “doggie do”
where if offends others.
NATIONAL PARK - Many of you will be interested to learn that,
at our regular RDOS Board meeting on April 19th the Directors
voted 12 to 3 in favor of requesting the Government of British
Columbia to re-engage in talks with Parks Canada and the
South Okanagan First Nations, with a view to establishing the
South Okanagan Grasslands National Park in the designated
planning area between Oliver-Osoyoos and Keremeos. My
thanks to everyone in Area ‘D’ who have expressed your views
to me on the possible creation of the National Park. The vast
majority of you seem to support the proposed Park, as do I.
KALEDEN RECREATION - Kaleden Recreation Commission
held their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, March 20th.
Gail Owen was re-elected as Chair. Many residents were in
attendance; however, we are still in need of fi lling three more
Director positions. If you would be interested in joining the
commission, please call Gail at 250-497-8911.
A special “Future of KVR in Kaleden” meeting is being held
on Monday, June 4th at 7pm in the Kaleden Hall. Numerous
dignitaries have been invited and confi rmations on attendance
have been received from MLA John Slater, ‘Speaker of the
House’ MLA Bill Barisoff, and Forest Minister Steve Thomson.
A list of others have been invited, so more confi rmations are
likely to come in soon. More details on this special meeting to
follow in the June issue of Skaha Matters.
RICK HANSEN RELAY - Finally, a couple of notes about
upcoming events in May. Just after noon on Saturday, May 5th
the Rick Hansen Relay runners will arrive at the Rec Centre
at the Okanagan Falls Elementary School. A short welcoming
ceremony and refreshments will be held at the school grounds,
compliments of the Parks and Recreation Commission. For
more information, please contact Janet Black at 250-497-8188.
PEN HI 100TH ANNIVERSARY - And for those of you who may
Rick Hansen Relay in OK Falls May 5th
Is it really 25 years since a true Canadian hero, Rick Hansen,
The Man In Motion World Tour, wheeled through Okanagan
Falls? (Photo above courtesy of Merle Laidlaw.)
To celebrate this anniversary, the Rick Hansen Relay is
retracing the Canadian segment of the original legendary
tour, but this time one man in motion will be represented and
celebrated by “many in motion”, engaging 7,000 participants
from across Canada who have made their own difference in
the lives of others. Congratulations to locally chosen Medal
Bearers for the Okanagan Falls route, who are Levi Kermeen,
Megan Donesley, Kaite Mckay, Mike Snair, and Lisa Eklund.
While Hansen will be present at a number of cities and stops
along the 25th anniversary relay, it will be these 7,000 medal
bearers who will complete this cross Canada tour of 12,000
km’s from coast to coast concluding in Vancouver in mid-May.
We look forward to meeting our chosen community medal
bearers as they bring the relay through Okanagan Falls.
An open letter from Rick Hansen reads: “As we celebrate
the anniversary of the Man in Motion World Tour, we enter a
new phase of growth, discovery and engagement with great
momentum and excitement. This journey will be measured not
only by the number of kilometers we travel, but how we are
embraced around the world and across Canada, as we continue
to strive to make a positive difference in the lives of others.”
Our relay day takes a one hour intermission at 12:30 pm, which
will provide the opportunity for our community to come together,
recognize our own difference makers, raise awareness about
accessibility and inclusiveness, and inspire a new generation
to take action to help make the world a better place.
Join us to cheer along the route (watch for blue and gold
balloons) and then at the Community Centre Celebration at
12:30. If you haven’t done the Rick Hansen Relay Dance yet,
here is your opportunity to be inspired. Wedgies will be providing
pizza, and Parks and Recreation’s Mustang Taekwan-Do Club
will be demonstrating. Please call Janet at 250-497-8188, if
you have any questions or would like to volunteer for this very
special event.
Advance with Mustang Taekwon-Do
Mustang Taekwon-Do held a training/testing weekend on April
14-15. Mr. Law, a V degree Black Belt, and Ms. Vrzal, a IV
degree Black Belt, from Pacifi c Rim Institute of Taekwon-Do in
Vancouver joined Ms. Braz in testing her students. Ms. Braz, a
III degree Black Belt and owner/instructor of Mustang Taekwon-
Do, along with Mr. Law tested the students. Ms. Braz would like
to congratulate her students for doing a great job testing, with
all her students advancing to their next belt level!
Mustang Taekwon-Do on Training/Testing Weekend of April 14-15 in OK Falls.
Mustang Taekwon-Do will perform a demo at the upcoming
Rick Hansen Relay Event, being held on Saturday, May 5th in
Okanagan Falls. Come out and watch us in action!
Taekwon-Do classes are held on Monday and Wednesday in
the Okanagan Falls Recreation Centre. 5-5:30 pm is for Little
Area ‘D’ Economic Development Office
By John Powell
In recent weeks, the Economic Development Offi ce (EDO) has
been investigating opportunities to develop a more sustainable,
‘green’ economy in Area ‘D’ that is powered by green
technologies and more environmentally-sensitive innovations
and practices. Whilst it is still early days, and more research
is required, Okanagan Falls and nearby communities are
seemingly extremely well placed to benefi t from BC’s growing
green economy which is becoming increasingly recognized
globally as a world leader in certain fi elds. There has been
considerable investment both federally and provincially in
developing both Canada’s and BC’s green economy. The
Knowledge Infrastructure Program is an important element
of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. This program provides
funding to support infrastructure enhancement at Universities
and Colleges. One such project was the development of the
Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building
Technologies and Renewable Energy Conservation in
Okanagan College, Penticton. (Visit www.okanagan.bc.ca/
Page26539.aspx) If you haven’t yet visited this incredible
building on Duncan Avenue, then I highly recommend it.
Structurlam, one of Okanagan Falls’ largest and most innovative
companies has been a major contributor to the construction
of this Centre of Excellence. Their light and extremely strong
glulam (glued laminated timber) beams were incorporated into
the design of the building which is testament to the quality,
durability and environmental credentials of their product.
(www.structurlam.com) In addition to Structurlam’s beams, the
building has been designed and constructed using a myriad of
other Canadian innovations. This building is now regarded as
one of the world’s greenest!
The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence is also home to
Accelerate Okanagan (Visit www.accelerateokanagan.com),
which is a Kelowna-based organization that seeks to support
entrepreneurs and technology companies looking to start,
accelerate and grow in the Okanagan. Accelerate Okanagan
programs combine elements such as needs assessments,
hands on coaching, mentorship, and access to world class
expertise to achieve their objectives.
The close proximity of Okanagan Falls to Penticton and its
Centre of Excellence, coupled with ample, prime business
development land, lower taxes and cheaper land, should
make this community an attractive proposition for researchers,
entrepreneurs and investors from these programs that are
looking for opportunities to stay and invest in the South
Okanagan. Judging by recent research, I believe that the EDO
and our business communities have an incredible opportunity
to start working with Okanagan College, Accelerate Okanagan
and others to turn these green ideas and concepts into reality.
Whether you are considering relocating to the Okanagan Falls/
South Skaha area, already have a business in the area, or
would like to start-up a business, I encourage you to make
contact with the economic development offi ce in Okanagan
Falls to discuss how we may be able to assist you. For more
information about specifi c economic development initiatives,
the role of the economic development offi ce, assistance with
RDOS-related issues and other related questions, please
contact John Powell, Area ‘D’ Economic Development
Coordinator at 778.515.5520 or jpowell@rdos.bc.ca.
Why Feldenkrais®?
For More Personal Bling
By Lynn Andersen, Feldenkrais Teacher®
Bling is usually thought of as something that you own that
sparkles and is expensive. The Feldenkrais® Method is more
about “Personal Bling”. Personal Bling is not what you have or
wear, it is who you are. Use this Method to create changes from
how you look on the outside all the way to your inner depths.
Improving “Surface Bling” or how you could sparkle and shine
on the outside. Less wrinkles, brighter skin, fuller lips and a natural
blush are the result of reducing stress and releasing tension
held in your face. Better body alignment translates into more
confi dent and graceful posture and movements which are sexier.
Obtaining “Inner Bling” or how you could sparkle and shine
on the inside. You can be calmer, more centered and peaceful.
Being more body aware helps you lead a more balanced,
healthier and longer life. Become a better observer and problem
solver. Feel focused and effective so that you can do what you
are here to do. Be less stressed and be more fun to be around.
Silver’s Real Value?
By Theresa Nolet
Well, as I sit and write this article, silver is selling at $31.66 US
per ounce on the stock market and people are going through
their jewelry boxes and speculating on what that old silver
jewelry from Mexico could fetch at the local pawn shop.
It is thoughts like that going through my mind that sends shivers
up my spine thinking of all the vintage hand made artisan
jewelry being melted down by unsuspecting people who only
look at the jewelry for its weight, not knowing anything about
how valuable that item may really be.
Mexico actually has a very good silver standard and early pieces
can easily be dated and attributed to the artist and are highly
sought after by collectors. William Spratling is the name most
associated with establishing Mexico as a source of handcrafted,
well designed silver jewelry. William Spratling an innovative
and talented designer was instrumental in establishing Taxco,
a small town as the centre of the Arts Movement and the hub
of handmade silver jewelry in the 1930’s. Spratling started
an apprenticeship program for aspiring silversmiths and is
responsible for giving the world such wonderful designers as
Margot de Taxco, Hector Aquila, and many more. Early silver
jewelry by these designers can sell in the thousands of dollars.
So, before you run off and sell that old Mexican silver necklace
for scrap value, have it checked out by a knowledgeable dealer
fi rst. Something that will only bring $50 scrap value when
thrown on a weigh scale could be worth hundreds or even
thousands of dollars if recognized for its artistic value by a
known silversmith!
What is Asthma?
Have you, or someone you know, been diagnosed with asthma? If so,
you probably have lots of questions. You may wonder, for example, just
what asthma is. The medical definition of asthma is simple, but the
condition itself is quite complex.
Doctors define asthma as a "chronic inflammatory disease of the
airway" that causes the following symptoms; shortness of breath,
tightness in the chest, coughing and wheezing.
Asthma has no set pattern. It’s symptoms; can be mild, moderate or
severe; can vary from person to person; can flare up from time to time
and then not appear for long periods; and can very from one episode to
the next.
Anyone can get asthma, although it’s ususally first diagnosed in young
people. Currently, about three million Canadians have asthma. The
cause of asthma is not know, and currently there is no cure.
Most people with asthma can live full, active lives. The trick is learning
how to keep the asthma symptom-free. If you have asthma, you can
control it by: avoiding your asthma triggers; taking your medication;
through education from your healthcare team; and by following an
asthma action plan.
Around The Farm ...
Random thoughts for the rural lifestyle
Today’s Topic: Bothersome Flies
Are your horses, or you for that matter, bothered by fl ies that
seem to be inevitable as soon as the weather warms up?
There are many ways to deal with the problem. Here are a few
that really work.
• Clean up your paddock, backyard or any other place
manure accumulates, as fl ies lay their eggs in manure.
• Having a composting regime in place will greatly reduce
your problem. The heat composting manure generates
helps to kill off fl y larvae.
• Another biologically sound approach is “Fly Predators”.
Spreading these parasitic wasps on your manure pile and
along the fence line of your paddock will deal with biting
insects before they hatch. Once these tiny parasitic wasps
hatch, they seek out fl y larvae to lay their own eggs in,
be it bot fl ies, stable fl ies, deer or horse fl ies, or those
annoying tiny white fl ies. These wasps, although parasitic,
are harmless to humans and animals alike and a sound
method of dealing with the pests that do seem to bother not
only us, but our animals as well.
• Best to start the Fly Predators program as soon as it starts
to warm up and the chance of frost has past. Once you
start your warfare on the biting pests you will need to stay
on top of them by reapplying your fl y predators every few
weeks. This together with well-placed fl y traps will make
your backyard far more enjoyable. You won’t have to apply
nasty sprays to your horse or buy another fl y sheet. It
costs about $3 a month per horse, or 8 sheep/goats, or
125 chickens.
Come on in to Sweetgrass Feed & Tack and sign up for the Fly
Predator program. You won’t regret it!!!
Kokanee Come Back
By Larry Martin
The Okanagan Lake Kokanee
Fishery was closed in the late
1990’s due to a dramatic decline in
abundance. Several key initiatives
were undertaken during the closure,
Kokanee in Okanagan Lake
including; management of lake levels in consideration of shorespawn
Kokanee, harvest of Mysis Shrimp, and enhancement of
spawning streams. Currently, the overall numbers for Kokanee
are now similar to that of the early 1990’s and Okanagan Lake is
now open to fi shing Kokanee, hopefully on a permanent basis.
There is a signifi cant difference; however, as the ratio of shorespawners
is much higher than that of stream-spawners. The
shore-spawn variety can be quite small even at maturity when
compared to the 5.5 pound stream-spawning kokanee pictured
here from the early 1990’s.
Paul Askey, Ph.D. and R.P. Bio of the Fish and Wildlife section
in Penticton, offered this sage advice regarding the fi shery ...
“Anglers should expect to catch large numbers of small Kokanee in
Okanagan Lake. High-grading (releasing small Kokanee and keeping
big ones) would not be considered a responsible use of fi sh, because:
typically you will catch many, many smaller ones (shore-spawners)
between larger ones (stream-spawners); survival probability of
released Kokanee appears much lower than most species given easy
descaling and softer mouth tissues; harvesting only large Kokanee
would put more harvest pressure on the “weak” stream-spawning
stock. They all taste good, so if you are Kokanee fi shing, please just
take them as they come and encourage others to do the same.”
For more information on fi shing the local areas, just ask Larry
at fs-lemartin@shaw.ca.
RCMP Update
Page 11
Police would like to remind everyone that with nicer weather
fi nally here, we can expect an increase in the number of cyclists
we will be seeing on our roads. As in previous years, there
are several cycling events being planned in our area, namely
the Granfondo in July and of course Ironman in August. In
preparation for those events, cyclists of all ages and experience
have already started to train and we must all share our roads,
taking into consideration the safety of everyone.
The rights and duties of cyclists are well described under
Section 183 of the Motor Vehicle Act and specifi es that a person
operating a cycle on a highway has the same rights and duties
as a driver of a vehicle. Cyclists should also be reminded that
they must not ride abreast of another person operating a cycle
on the roadway and must operate a cycle with reasonable
consideration for other persons using the highway.
Other than legal and common safe practices, visibility is also
a very important factor which cyclists should remember, such
as the wearing of high visibility clothing and the proper use of
hand signals to communicate their intentions.
On the same token, motorists must also consider that cyclists
are much more affected by road debris and conditions like
wind, pebbles, sand, bumps and holes than vehicles are and it
is important to remain considerate of the space they require to
safely enjoy their sport.
“Patience and respect of one another is the key here and we are
asking everyone’s support and attention to ensure our roads
remain safe for everyone to enjoy”, says Corporal Trudeau.
A Community Service does not exist without the support from
our Community. We are here because we meet the criteria that
is approved by the RCMP. We have support from RDOS and
we have an offi ce thanks to the OK Falls Irrigation District. We
have volunteers who pass the screening of the RCMP. These
volunteers provide the vehicles used in our patrols and we
provide them money for their gasoline. The merchants provide
us with yearly gifts passed out to volunteers at a festive dinner.
A barbecue is attended by our volunteers in the summer. A
recent addition of caps to go with our uniforms were sponsored
by the Medical Clinic and Sarson's.
Volunteers are always needed, come and pass the screening
Reasonable and Radical Renovations
with Brian Moen, Realtor with Royal LePage Locations West
From simple aesthetics to washroom overhauls, Royal LePage
has identifi ed the top renovations that will increase the equity of
a home. This list is ranked in ascending order of cost of project:
1. Freshen Up: Adding a new coat of paint can freshen up
a house and make the interior look like new, not to mention
more spacious. For homeowners looking to sell quickly, neutral
colours are recommended.
2. Floors Galore: Today, hard surfaces are all the rage. If
genuine hardwood exceeds budgets, laminate works well.
Buyers like to see hard fl oors throughout, so if possible, be
sure to lay down laminate in dining rooms and living rooms,
and even in bathrooms and bedrooms. While a range of
hardwood qualities, textures and colours exists, it’s best to opt
for a neutral wood colour to accommodate the widest possible
array of tastes and décor.
3. Lighten Up: Old or standard-grade light fi xtures, electrical
and light cover plates can easily date a house. To modernize
and add distinct fl air to the interior, consider installing new light
fi xtures. Remember to go green and use compact fl uorescent
light bulbs, where possible.
4. Pebble Beach?: Well, close ... The old adage, “you never
get a second chance to make a fi rst impression” is extremely
true when it comes to selling a home. To increase curb appeal
and entice buyers, ensure front lawns are tidy and gardening is
minimal. While there is no need to go overboard and plant an
expensive Japanese maple tree, adding some standard shrubs
and fl owers will make a home more inviting.
5. Stylishly Steel: Similar to the issue with old light fi xtures,
knobs, fume hoods and backsplashes can make a kitchen seem
outdated. Stainless steel hardware designs have the biggest
and most positive impact on people looking to buy a home.
6. White Picket Fence?: Building a fence and a deck instantly
boosts a home’s appeal. Keeping kids and pets in the yard and
noisy neighbours out, fences provide the back and side yards
with a sense of privacy.
7. Occupied No More: A bathroom situated on the main fl oor
is increasingly seen by homebuyers as an essential fi xture
in their next purchase. While many older houses were built
with bathrooms only on the second fl oor, many homeowners
are resorting to transforming closets or adding new rooms to
accommodate two-piece powder rooms.
8. Exquisite Ensuite: Today’s homebuyer prefers bathrooms
that have spa-style tubs and modern faucets. Granite and
marble tiles are now readily available and can be purchased at
relatively affordable prices.
9. Everything ... and the Kitchen Sink: While prices can
vary when renovating a kitchen, one thing is certain: kitchen
makeovers bring one of the highest returns on investment.
With homeowners spending more time in the kitchen than any
other room, it’s no surprise they want the best possible style
and functionality. Stainless steel appliances, ceramic sinks
and clean lines on cupboards rank as the more preferred fi nish
options. Since kitchens and baths can be such a personal
space, it’s wise not to select a dramatic style or colour scheme,
since your tastes may not be the same as the next owner’s.
As an expert on home sale trends in your neighbourhood, your
local Royal LePage real estate agent can advise you whether
or not renovations will add value to your home and make it
more sellable. Any questions, give me a call at 250.809.6192.
Give Your Investments a
“Spring Cleaning”
By Justin White
Spring is here. If you’re like many people, the arrival of spring
means it’s time to spruce up your home. But, why stop there?
This year, consider applying some of those same springcleaning
techniques to your investments.
Here are some ideas you may want to put to work:
Get Rid of Clutter. Over the years, you may have accumulated
multiple versions of common household items - brooms, mops,
hammers - which pop up mysteriously in various parts of your
home. You might fi nd it more effi cient, and even less expensive,
if you consolidated all these things in one centralized location.
As an investor, you also might fi nd that consolidation can offer
you some benefi ts. Do you have more than one Registered
Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) with more than one
fi nancial services provider? Or even worse - Do you have you
investments scattered everywhere? By consolidating all these
accounts in one place, you can cut down on paperwork, reduce
fees, and most importantly, unite your investment dollars so
that it’s easier for you to see what you have, how things are
doing and then follow a single, coherent investment strategy.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. You probably don’t have to look too
far around your home to fi nd things that are broken or simply
no longer useful to you. If you poke around your portfolio,
you might make similar discoveries: an investment that has
always underperformed, duplicate investments or investments
that met your needs in the past, but are not relevant to your
current situation and goals. Once you identify these types
of investments, you may decide to sell them and use the
proceeds to take advantage of opportunities that may prove
more valuable to you.
Prepare for the Weather. As you know, springtime can bring
heavy rains, hail, and strong winds. As part of your overall
spring cleaning, you may want to check the condition of your
roof, clear branches away from your house, clean your gutters
and downspouts, and take other steps to protect your property
from the ravages of Mother Nature. And, just as you need to
safeguard your home, you’ll want to protect the lifestyles of
those who live in that home - namely, your family. You can help
accomplish this by reviewing your life and disability insurance
to make sure it’s still suffi cient for your family’s needs.
Call in the Professionals. You may fi nd that you can’t do all
your spring cleaning by yourself. For example, if your carpets
and rugs are heavily soiled, you’ll call in a professional cleaner.
Or if your tree branches have grown out of control, you might
need to bring in a tree trimmer. Similarly, when you decide to
“tidy up” your investments, you’ll need some assistance from a
fi nancial professional - someone who can help you clean things
up. Spring cleaning can re-invigorate your home and your
overall outlook. And, by tidying up your investment portfolio,
you can get some of that same peace of mind. Find someone
you trust who can ensure your holdings are suitable for your
risk tolerance, time line and short and long-term goals. If you
don’t have a trusted fi nancial advisor or think you maybe aren’t
getting the advise you need, call me at 250.490.3390. I’ll help
you “Spruce Things Up”.
Local Author Launches 8th Novel
Okanagan Falls Author Alan E. Longworth, has just published
his eighth novel, titled “Union Boss”. The basic premise for the
fi ction story comes from the author’s experiences of working
on Vancouver’s waterfront and in the transportation industry.
Place and names in the novel have been changed - Vancouver
becomes Sandport. The main character has been brought up
in an alcoholic household on the city’s east side. He learns to
become streetwise and criminal at an early age. He discovers
that getting into the waterfront worker’s union, a whole new
world of theft and crime opens up to him. Through coercion,
violence and murder, ‘Frank’ claws his way to be union boss. He
rules with an iron fi st, taking what he wants for himself. Frank
State takes the reader to the underbelly
of society with a surprising insights into
criminal behaviour. However, Frank
rarely reveals the softer side to his
personality. “Union Boss” is a raw fast
moving novel, the kind you will not want
to put down.
Alan Longworth will offer the novel to
Okanagan Falls residents during a
special book signing at the Okanagan
Falls IGA from 11am - 3pm on May 4-6.
Kaleden Elementary PAC Update
with Sandy Nickle and Principal Scott Edwards
April Showers bring May fl owers ... that is of course unless the
deer got to them fi rst! It’s hard to believe there are only two
months of school left. Time fl ies when you’re having fun!
Kaleden Elementary School would like to send out a HUGE
thank you to everyone in the community who supported “Jump
Rope for Heart”. We are very proud to say that we raised and
amazing $4080 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Once
again the community spirit of a small community school came
shining through!
The School participated in a Cultural Bridges Day on April 12th
and it was a huge success. The Okanagan Education Aboriginal
Team for the Okanagan Skaha School District hosted a full day
of cultural events. This program was based on a variety of
components of First Nation life. The day was comprised of
8 “hands on” mini sessions that highlighted both traditional
and current aspects of Aboriginal culture. The students had a
superb time learning the steps and origins of the Metis Broom
Dance, how to make teepee’s, and the history and basics of
lacrosse. Everyone took home personal pictograph rocks and
beaded wristlets. Kaleden Elementary would like to send out
our appreciation to the entire Aboriginal Team for a fabulous,
highly enjoyable, educational day!
Cross country running (for Grades 3, 4 & 5) started in the
middle of April and is in full swing! The annual Kaleden Fun
Run will be held on Friday, May 18th. Come out to Pioneer
Park and cheer on our athletes!
Our “Ready, Set, Learn Program” saw a group of eager new
faces at the school on April 24th. This is a great introduction
for 3 and 4 year olds to our wonderful school and in particular,
the kindergarten environment. It’s also a great opportunity for
parents to connect with the many resources available to them
and their children in our community.
We encourage families with children born in 2007 to stop by
the school and register your child for Kindergarten in the fall.
Please call the school at 250-770-7692 for more information.
Twenty seven students from SD67 qualifi ed to compete in the
Central Okanagan Regional Science Fair at UBCO in Kelowna.
Sixty-two projects by eighty-one students from Grades 6 to 12
were on display. 50 Science Fair judges discussed and scored
the student’s projects. Judges included UBCO professors,
graduate students, and other local scientists. Four of the six
students who qualifi ed to go to the Canada Wide Science Fair
in Charlottetown, PEI are from SD67. Congratulations go out to
Meg Cumming and Breanna Gowe from Penticton Secondary
and Vincent Combret and Joshua Gowe from KVR Middle
School. Many thanks to Raja Gupta, Shona Becker, Ken Ireson
and Geoff Waterman for organizing the District Science Fair
and assisting the students to take their projects to the next
level. Congratulations also go to Summerland Middle School
Teacher Jon Broadbent, who was awarded the BC Innovation
Council Teacher Award.
The Budget Development Survey is on the School District
website through May 2nd. All input is appreciated. There will
be a special board meeting at 7pm on May 7th to receive the
preliminary budget for the 2012-13 school year.
The District has received notifi cation that we will receive the full
amount of the annual facilities grant ($1.2 million). This grant
is targeted for upkeep of our facilities. Three years ago this
grant was eliminated, but because of strong advocacy from this
district and others it was reinstated and has now been returned
to the full allocation. The continuation of this grant is good news
for our district.
School District 53 Board Report
with Marieze Tarr, Chairperson SD53
SD53 is very excited about the new Funding Announcement
by the Ministry of Education. MLA John Slater announced this
morning at SOSS (April 20th) that we will be receiving 19.5
million dollars to complete construction of Southern Okanagan
Secondary School in Oliver. At this morning’s announcement
drawings of the new school were unveiled, the building will also
include a new Theatre and Neighbourhoods of Learning facility.
Tenders for the project have been posted and the tentative
timelines for completion of the School is late 2013 and for the
Neighbourhoods of Learning and the Auditorium is 2014.
Our Fifth Annual Pow Wow, held at Osoyoos Secondary School,
was very successful with 400 elementary students attending
in the morning and 200 secondary students attending in the
afternoon. It was a celebration of language and culture by the
Okanagan Nation attended by many dignitaries and also by the
local Chief, Chief Louie.
In April the district hosted its fi rst Learning Forum of the year.
The forum focused on Aboriginal Education with presentations
from Deidre Simpson (Teacher at TEN), Marcus Toneatto
(Principal of SESS) and Amanda Montgomery. Deidre brought
some of her students to talk about the new Grade 4 Okanagan
Peoples Unit that she developed with Helen Gallager
(District Aboriginal Contact Teacher). This unit will now be
implemented in all Grade 4 classes in our district. Marcus and
Amanda presented the New R’Native Voice course, available
to students in Similkameen and Oliver, to the board. Two of our
students Tony Abellan (TEN) and Shannon Terbasket (SESS)
spoke about being elected to the Aboriginal Education Advisory
Council and their role on it.
Notice of Motion for the following policies were given at the last
Regular Board Meeting: Policy F-1 (International/Exchange/
International Students), Policy F-9 (Special Education), Policy
F-12 (Child Protection), Policy C-6 (Purchasing), Policy C-7
(School Generated Funds). These policies are on the district’s
website and we are awaiting input from all of our partner groups
before they are approved.
We also had our fi rst Budget Advisory Committee Meeting
on April 18. We have representatives from all of our partner
groups (teachers, CUPE, principals, parents and aboriginal
education workers) on the committee. Our next meeting will
be on June 6th.
New Kids of Steel® Triathlon
A new committee is hard at work creating a Kids of
Steel ® Triathlon Program at the Okanagan Falls
Elementary School. Kids of Steel® is a national
program through Triathlon Canada. The program encourages
safety, fun and participation - it does not promote intensive
training, or a year-round focus on triathlon (swim/bike/run).
The event will celebrate participation over results, as no timing
will take place and all the children will receive a gold medal. In
early May we will have an “Intro to Triathlon” presentation for
each class to teach the kids all about the sport, and to kick off
our program. The sport will be woven into school-wide fi tness,
PE classes, and our annual swimming lessons.
We will be hosting a school-wide triathlon on June 14th from
4-6:30pm in Kenyon Park, as a part of our year-end “Family
Frenzy” (the whole event will be held in Kenyon Park this year).
The swim will take place in the lake at Kenyon Beach, and the
bike ride and run will take place in and around the parks and
BCNDP Candidate “Running” for Office
The BC New Democrat candidate in Boundary-Similkameen
is showing her motivation and determination by running for
offi ce - literally. Marji Basso, a two term Town Councillor for
Oliver will be running a four-day 160km marathon across her
constituency as a way to raise awareness of the diversity in her
constituency, and to meet the voters across the riding.
Basso has been training for what she’s calling the “Get
Motivated” tour for the last 5 months. The trek begins on
May 23rd in Kaleden, and will wrap up on May 26th in Grand
Forks. The ambitious route requires her to run the equivalent
of a marathon distance each day, adding biking legs ranging
from 10-30 km per day as well. The run will end with a “Get
Motivated” wine and cheese reception on May 26th in Grand
Forks, where Basso will be joined by BCNDP Leader Adrian
Dix, Party President Moe Sihota, local MP Alex Atamanenko,
and a contingent of BCNDP MLA’s.
For more information on tour stops and when Basso will be
running through your area, visit her website at http://marjibasso.
What Matters - Being Heard or Listening?
with Wendy MacKay
Why are humans so complex? We all want to be loved, feel
appreciated and live happy, BUT we complicate everything.
Many of us feel the need to express our opinion, even if
not asked for it. If we don’t feel heard or acknowledged, we
repeat ourselves. Then we say it another way just so everyone
understands. The truth is we’re trying to convince whomever
we’re speaking to that our opinion is important and it does
matter. We want to matter!
Parents, children, teachers, employers, politicians, everyone
wants to matter and be heard, but how many of us really listen?
How many of us acknowledge and appreciate what others’
have to say? How many of us express our appreciation for
others’ opinions, without feeling the need to add our two bits?
If you felt confi dent you’re understood and appreciated, would
you feel empowered?
Learn to listen intently to others. Ask pertinent questions with a
genuine interest. Instead of jumping in to express your opinion,
ask yourself if what you have to say will make a difference.
Empower the ones around you and stand back to witness the
shift that begins to occur.
Sometimes being right isn’t what matters the most, but you DO
matter. Check out more posts at http://blogwithwendy.com
Okanagan Falls Women’s Institute
At the successful Spring Conference, the Guest Speaker was
our very own Eleanor Walker. Her topic was “Putting on a
Stage Production” in which the members were given duties,
i.e. Manager, Actor, etc. This gave us all great insight into the
involvement of producing a play. Also, at our Spring Conference
updated information was given on the “Band Shell” project.
During our recent community wide “Pitch In”, the WI members
decided to take part by giving their hour to the Heritage and
Museum site. This reminded some of us when “Pitch In” was
fi rst introduced and the bags were sent to the WI for distribution.
The WI members back then for their part took on cleaning the
road sides of McLean Creek Road and Allendale Road up to the
landfi ll. It took all morning. Two of our members had their pickup
trucks to haul the garbage. After we fi nished, we had a picnic
lunch on the lawn of a member who lived on Allendale Road.
Our Motto, “For Home and Country”, is something our members
have been doing for the past 91 years and we’re still very active.
Senior adj. 1. of higher rank or longer service. 2. of or for
seniors. Now that doesn’t sound so bad, does it? Nowhere
that I looked did it say any of the words many associate with
“senior” - useless, aged, senile, and the list goes on ... because
we are NOT any of those things. In most cases, you would
be surprised at the intelligent, useful people we have among
our members. Would you believe an Air Traffi c Controller,
High School Principal, Aeronautical Engineer, Trade School
Instructor, Merchant Marine, Motel or Store Owners and a few
Ranchers? We have them all and more.
In order to be a member of our Centre, one only has to be
over the age of 50 and interested in spending their spare time
with something to do besides play on the computer or watch
TV. We unfortunately fall into a rut when we are comfortable
with our surroundings, but New Members who are eager to say
“what can I do?” and then do it are what is needed to keep any
organization lively and vital. We don’t mind if you’re retired or
working - living here permanently or just here for the summer
(or winter), we would love to meet you.
The Art Group has changed their meeting time back to the old
one - Friday at 1:00. We invite you to come over to the Centre
(1128 Willow St.) and have a look at what is going on. Always
wanted to paint, but didn’t know where to start? Love to make
collages? Go for it!
If you are reading this on May 1st, you still have until tomorrow
to register for the Crib Tournament at the Centre. It will run all
day Sunday, May 6th beginning at 9:00 am. It will be a doubles
tournament at the cost of $20 per person. This covers snacks
and coffee in the morning and lunch, as well as cash prizes.
Call Dave (250-497-7089) NOW! There may be a few spaces
still available.
If you have any questions about our activities, phone
Easter Egg Hunt held on Sunday, April 8th - Our
annual Easter Egg Hunt was held under sunny skies and warm
temperatures on Sunday, April 8th. Several hundred children,
along with parents and relatives, showed up for this popular
event. Many of them were there well in advance of the 1:00 pm
start time.
As in past years, the Lions distributed over 6,000 chocolate
Easter eggs throughout Lions Park. Among these eggs were
over 20 specially marked chocolate cream eggs that entitled
the child who found one to added prizes. The two major prizes
were a children’s bicycle, won by Maisey Cobb, and a digital
camera, won by Noah Lamont. This year we had an added
attraction of almost 100 stuffed toy animals of various sizes
distributed throughout the park as well.
Left: Maisey with her new bike. Right: Noah with his new digital camera.
Special thanks goes to local Okanagan Falls resident, Mrs.
Kaden, who kindly donated them from her own personal
collection. Also a special mention to Teresa Grover, who
unselfi shly gave all her chocolate eggs to the other children.
Purina Dog Walk planned for Sunday, May 27th - Once
again the OK Falls Lions will be organizing the annual “Purina
Dog Walk” to raise funds for the training of Dog Guides. This
year’s event is scheduled to take place in the OK Falls Lions
Park on Sunday, May 27th. Registration is 12 noon and the
Dog Walk begins at 1:00 pm.
The Purina® Walk for Dog Guides raises money to help train
Dog Guides for Canadians with visual, hearing, medical or
physical disabilities. 100% of the funds raised from this walk
go directly toward raising, training and providing Dog Guides to
Canadians at no cost. All ages, fi tness levels, with or without a
dog are welcome to participate.
Did you know ... Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides
does not receive any government funding and relies on the
support of fundraising events and donations from service clubs,
corporations, foundations and individuals across the country.
All Dog Guides, including training and accommodation at the
school, are provided to qualifi ed applicants at no cost. It costs
approximately $20,000 to provide each Dog Guide to eligible
Canadians.
Pledge forms can be obtained by calling either Vi Creasey at
250-497-8785 or Shirley O’Conner at 250-497-7951. Please
Note: The District-19 Lions are selling raffl e tickets with the
proceeds going towards sponsoring a Dog Guide. There are
three money prizes: 1st - $1,000, 2nd - $500 and 3rd - $300.
To Mexico With Love 2012 - With excitement and some
trepidation of what was before us, our group of 22 climbed
aboard the bus early on Saturday morning March 17th. After a
snowy ride through the Hope-Princeton, we would be greeted
with mostly snow free conditions on the rest of our journey to
the community of Colonia Vicente Guerrero in Baja California,
Mexico.
Upon arriving at what we call the “big house” our home for
the next eight days, we settled in to our new surroundings and
were soon on the road to meet the two families we would be
building houses for. The next few days would be a bee hive of
construction activity. The sounds of hammers, saws and excited
voices could be heard throughout the community of Padre
Keno. Soon the two houses would be fi nished, furnished and
ready for that most precious moment of our trip - “dedication
day”. No better end to a busy week than the amazing feeling of
giving two unbelievably strong and inspiring families the keys
to their new homes! What a perfect day! It is not how much
you do, but how much love you put into the doing that matters.
After a couple of days of visiting past families and enjoying the
beauty of the Baja, it was time to climb aboard the bus and
begin the journey home. This is always a bitter sweet moment,
perhaps best summed up in the following journal entry ...
As the sun begins to awaken and I hear the not so distant
alarms of the rooster’s ... my last morning in Mexico begins.
An amazing journey with an equally amazing group of people.
For the 7th time I climb on a bus and head north ... fi lled with
renewed hope for a better world because I have witnessed
the caring, loving, giving spirit of a group of young people who
came to change the lives of two wonderful families. Soon we
will be reunited with our own families and I am again reminded
that I am blessed ... truly blessed!
We are deeply grateful to all who contributed to this year’s trip
and look forward to planning for To Mexico With Love 2013.
