Kids of Steel ® Triathlon Success
with Carrie Ferguson, Race Director
Okanagan Falls First Annual ‘Live Well with Pharmasave
Kids of Steel Triathlon’ was a smashing success! While the
thunder and lightning caused the organizers a few headaches
before the event started, the clouds miraculously parted in
time for the fi rst age group to take to the water. A total of 83
children between the ages of 3 and 13 braved the “demanding”
course, some from as far away as Kamloops. Every child who
participated was given a goody bag, a swim cap, a race bib,
a medal, and a prize - all free of charge. An amazing group
of sponsors and volunteers came together to create a very
special event that will not soon be forgotten. Plans are already
underway for next years’ race.
“It was an amazing day that allowed us to showcase our new
park, celebrate participation in sport, and have a lot of fun.
Hopefully, next year’s race will be a little warmer though!”, said
Co-Race Director Niki Holt with a smile.
This year’s generous sponsors included Pharmasave,
the Penticton Triathlon Club, ‘Freedom, the bike shop’,
Tickleberry’s, Marketplace IGA, Ironman Canada, Monahan
Agencies, Dogtown Coffee, OK Falls Parks and Rec, and the
RDOS. The group also received a grant from Sport BC that
allowed them to offer equipment to children who were without.
The event was also helped along by famed announcer Steve
King, professional triathletes Scott Tremblay and Jeff Symonds,
local physician Dr. Andrew Robertson, Carol Bentley of Malibu
Dreams Photography, and TriBC offi cial Troyce Beglaw.
Thanks to both MLA John Slater and Director Tom Siddon for
joining in and cheering on the children. Very special thanks
also go out to Laura Carleton, Sophia Chadwick, Alan Kidd,
Brad Lee and all of the other race day volunteers.
Top Left - The 6/7 age group takes to the chilly waters. Top Right - Jaylyn Askeland
enjoys her bike ride with a smile. Middle Left - Mason Holt runs his bike to the
PREVENT GRASS FIRES!!
It doesn’t take very much wind or slope for a grass fi re to grow
from a fi re a few yards in size to a wildfi re spanning several acres.
At this time of year especially, you can prevent wildfi res by:
• Cutting tall, dry grass before fi re season starts around your
homes, fences, mailboxes, gates and turnouts.
• Don’t throw cigarette butts on the ground or out of vehicles.
• BBQ safely in an area free from brush and shrubbery.
• Educate the entire family on the importance of fi re safety.
FROM THE DIRECTOR
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA!
It’s already half-way through 2012
and it’s time to celebrate Canada’s
Birthday once again. Even with
all our individual challenges,
economic uncertainty and political
controversies, we really do live in
the greatest nation on Earth. We
have so much to be thankful for; from
the many freedoms we enjoy to the
availability of outstanding health care
and old age security. We are blessed
with abundant food, water and shelter,
an outstanding education system,
splendid natural beauty, and unlimited opportunities. We lucky
Canadians! We are so indebted to all those who, with foresight
and forbearance made our country great, these past 145 years.
CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS: Please bring your friends
to the offi cial opening of the new Kenyon Park in Okanagan
Falls at 10:45 am on Sunday, July 1st. The program is jointly
sponsored by the Okanagan Falls Parks and Recreation
Commission and the Wild West Festival Society. There will
be an offi cial valve-opening for the new children’s water park,
recognition of many of our respected senior citizens, music and
First Nation drummers, vintage cars and Canada Day treats for
everyone. Bring your kids or grandkids along and wave a fl ag
for Canada!
DEER SURVEY RESULTS: I want to thank everyone who
responded to my “Deer Control” survey in last month’s issue of
Skaha Matters. Although results are still coming in daily, I have
now received responses from 65 residents. Of these, only
7 voted for Option A - leave the deer alone, and 4 supported
Option B - relocate the deer. The overwhelming majority of
55 residents (85%) called for Option C - a humane cull to be
carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Natural
Resource Operations, either by opening up hunting restrictions
or carried out by Provincially qualifi ed wildlife offi cers.
The responses included many enlightening comments and
suggestions. For example, one respondent wrote ... “I’d like to
say that I want our dear friends gone. They have demolished my
40 foot cedars, attacked my little dog, and have found devious
ways to get into my yard to do further damage. Relocation
sounds good, but is more expensive than a cull. I want action
to be taken soon.”
Many residents asked for severe fi nes for those known
neighbours who insist on feeding the deer. I am now preparing
recommendations to the RDOS Board of Directors for a
thoughtful discussion about options for carrying out a humane
cull of these over-populated “critters” that seem to have taken
over our communities.
“KIDS OF STEEL” TRIATHLON: It was a great success! My
compliments to Carrie Ferguson and her organizing committee,
and all those Elementary Students from Okanagan Falls and
surrounding schools who participated in this “fi rst ever” short
Triathlon held on June 14th at Kenyon Park. Great fun was
had by all. Medals were given to all the participants. In spite
of cool, breezy weather, the young racers had a great time.
And many parents and grandparents were justly proud of their
future Iron class triathletes.
OCP REVIEW for AREA D2: The OCP review now enters the
public consultation phase. After ten months of work with our
consultants, Urban Systems Ltd., and extensive input from the
Area D2 citizens Advisory Committee, the draft OCP plan for
Okanagan Falls and the East Side of Area ‘D’ is now available
in report form. A public Open House will be held at Kenyon
House in Okanagan Falls on July 31 from 2 - 7 pm. A copy of
the OCP proposals and an online survey will be available on
the RDOS website throughout the months of July and August.
For further information, please contact Evelyn Reichert at (250)
490-4204 or ereichert@rdos.bc.ca .
AXEL MERCKX VALLEY FIRST GRANFONDO: You might
want to watch the Axel Merckx Granfondo cyclists as they pass
through Okanagan Falls on Sunday morning, July 8th. Up to
3000 cyclists will participate in one of three alternative length
races. For further details contact Denise Melenka: dmelenka@
Granfondo Cycling Event Schedule
After an impressive fi rst year with more than 2,000 cyclists
fl ocking to the South Okanagan, the Valley First Granfondo
Axel Merckx Okanagan (VFGFAMO) returns on Sunday, July
8th. This year, the event starts and fi nishes from Penticton’s
Gyro Park and incorporates a few new exciting events and
activities. Residents of the Okanagan Valley are encouraged to
visit the on-line Weekend Schedule of Events for more details
at www.granfondoaxelmerckx.com/event-info. Once again,
5-time Tour de France winner, Eddy Merckx, will join his son
Axel to ride through the Okanagan’s beautiful hills and valleys.
In addition to the Granfondo (160 km) and Mediofondo (92 km)
distances, this year’s event also features a new distance called
the Cortofondo (55 km). The main Granfondo, Mediofondo, and
Cortofondo rides begin in Penticton at 7am, before heading out
to Summerland and back through Penticton. At approximately
8:09 am, the fi rst riders will arrive at the Skaha Lake Park aid
station, and immediately head out along Lakeside/East Side
Road. Cortofondo riders turn back to the Gyro Park fi nish upon
reaching Skaha Lake Park. From 8-11:30am, residents along
East Side Road from Penticton to McLean Creek Road turn-off
should expect a steady stream of Mediofondo and Granfondo
cyclists. The roads will still be open to vehicular traffi c, but
drivers should expect delays during this time. Similar to the
Ironman Canada route, the cyclists will turn up McLean Creek
Road. At approximately 8:30am, the lead cyclists will pass by
the intersection McLean Creek Road and Allendale Lake Road,
and later proceed West along Maple Street between 8:35am -
12pm. There will be an aid station in place at Christie Memorial
Park in Okanagan Falls. At this point, the two categories
(Mediofondo and Granfondo) split, with the Mediofondo riders
proceeding West along Hwy 97 towards Kaleden, and the
Granfondo riders heading East up Maple Street and through
to Oliver Ranch Road. Mediofondo riders will reach Kaleden
& Hwy 97 starting at 8:45am. Again, roads will be open to
vehicular traffi c, but delays are expected and driving with
caution is greatly appreciated. Cyclists will continue to pass this
section of highway until approximately 5pm. Granfondo riders
will reach Hwy 97 off of Oliver Ranch Road at approximately
8:40am. Cyclists will continue to fl ow through this section until
approximately 1:15pm. Granfondo riders will proceed around
Oliver and back through the Fairview/White Lake area before
returning to Penticton along Highway 97.
Information about the routes, traffi c information and weekend
event details can be found at the Valley First Granfondo Axel
Merckx Okanagan website at www.granfondoaxelmerckx.com.
Organizers invite you to take part either as a rider, a volunteer
or a spectator. Events before and after the ride are open to
the public, and include activities for the entire family, as well
as the offi cial Granfondo Wine Tasting in conjunction with the
Summer Wine Festival also on July 8th in Gyro Park.
New Trailrunning Clinic
It’s that time of year when we see numerous athletes training
on our roadways. Most of them are training for Ironman, but
many athletes are just starting out on a new challenge and could
use some extra added support and guidance along the way.
Local Okanagan Falls resident and owner of Okanagan Sport
Clinic, Chris Corfi eld, is a Registered Kinesiologist and ultrarunner.
The Okanagan Sport Clinic offers fi tness consulting
and injury management to the South Okanagan area. Services
include sport massage, injury assessment, customized
rehabilitation programs, postural assessment, gait analysis,
Kaleden Irrigation District News
July is here and by now hopefully our infamous Okanagan
summer weather. For the Kaleden Irrigation District, the summer
also creates the highest water demand, as water consumption
for all irrigation purposes peaks. We are all aware of the
importance water has to the ever expanding population of the
world. Conservation is therefore becoming a major priority to
water purveyors everywhere. This concept is not lost or ignored
by the Kaleden Irrigation District. In addition to our conservation
program of no residential daytime watering between 9 am and
7 pm, the District has been locating and repairing leaks in the
system as part of an ongoing maintenance and upgrading
program. It is diffi cult to compare the performance of one water
purveyor with another, but a recent survey showed that Kaleden
remains one of the less expensive water systems in the area.
This is an indication of effi ciency even though a large part of
the system is almost 50 years old. Kaleden residents can also
do their part to reduce consumption through leakage by taking
a few moments to check their systems for leaking taps, valves,
sprinklers and pipes. A few simple repairs can go along way
in helping to reduce the peak demand on the Irrigation District
during what we hope will be a hot, dry summer.
Offi cial Community Plan (OCP) Update
The draft OCP is now ready for community
consultation. The RDOS is seeking feedback from
all Electoral Area D-2 residents on the revised OCP. Based on
community input and ongoing involvement with the Citizen’s
Committee, some highlights include:
• Focussing growth and density and establishing primary
and secondary growth area boundaries.
• Increasing environmental protection.
• Establishing two new Development Permit areas, one
for Hillside Development and another for Industrial
Development.
• Recognizing the unique characters of individual
communities within D-2.
Residents can participate through completing an on-line
survey during July and August, or attend an OPEN HOUSE
on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 from 2-7 pm at Kenyon House in
Area ‘D’ Economic
Development Offi ce
with John Powell
Working with and supporting existing local businesses in Area
D is a primary element of our Economic Development Strategy
for Okanagan Falls and Area ‘D’. Even before our recently
endorsed Economic Development Strategy was ratifi ed,
working with existing businesses was viewed as a key aspect
of the role of this offi ce. You can view this strategy on our
website at www.okfalls.ca.
Encouraging passing trade to stop in Okanagan Falls and
spend money here is a challenge that many people recognize.
Encouraging people to stop and perhaps visit a business that
they may otherwise pass-by is the thinking behind a new
scheme which is about to be launched in Okanagan Falls.
The highly successful Bead Trail is scheduled to be launched
in Okanagan Falls on the Canada Day long weekend. The
Bead Trail is a business started by Karen Griggs, the resident
jewellery artist based out of the Summerland Visitor’s Centre.
In 2010, she began selling her ‘bracelets with a story’. Artisans,
wineries and businesses in Summerland and Naramata began
to carry a unique bead that she designed to their specifi cations
that best represented their business. These beads could then
be added to the bracelet - much like a charm bracelet.
In a recent interview with the Penticton Herald, Karen stated
that “I’ve had many people tell me they never would have gone
to these businesses if it hadn’t been in search of a bead,” says
Karen. “Locals and tourists tell me how much fun they had,
how affordable it was, and how anyone can do it!”
The concept has been a huge success in Summerland and
Naramata for both the participating businesses and for Karen.
Many of these businesses have witnessed greater volumes of
people through their doors and increased their revenue. Karen
donates some of her profi ts to the Anti-bullying Campaign.
From July 2012, Okanagan Falls’ Heart of Wine Country Bead
Trail will help promote more unique businesses to tourists and
local people alike. Look out for the Quail symbol in the windows
of participating businesses. Visitors can pick up beads for
their bracelets, as well as the bracelet itself from all of these
businesses which currently include the Okanagan Falls Visitor
Centre, Jardin Antiques, Dogtown Coffee Co. and several
wineries in and around Okanagan Falls. Whilst we did explore
the option of expanding the scheme to include businesses
in other parts of Area ‘D’, we decided that we should initially
keep it within a more manageable geographical area with a
view to perhaps expanding the scheme in the future. If you are
interested in taking part in any future expansion, please let me
know. For more information about the Okanagan Falls Bead
Trail, or to download a map, see www.beadtrails.com.
Whether you are considering relocating to the Okanagan Falls/
South Skaha area, already have a business in the area or would
like to start-up a business, I encourage you to make contact
with the Economic Development Offi ce in Okanagan Falls to
discuss how we may be able to assist you. For more information
about specifi c economic development initiatives, the role of the
Economic Development Offi ce, assistance with RDOS-related
issues and other related questions, please contact John Powell,
BUSINESS SHOWCASE - This month’s local business
showcase is Easy Lock Self Storage. Easy Lock Self Storage
is a brand new storage facility located at 1964 Oliver Ranch
Road in Okanagan Falls. Owner Kelsey Robinson has been a
resident of the Okanagan Falls area for a number of years and
enjoys being a part of this wonderful community.
They opened in November 2011 and look forward to the many
years ahead as they establish themselves as a solid community
business. Catering to residents new and existing, they provide
a number of secure storage units ranging in size from 5x5 to
10x30. They also have plenty of room for boats and RV’s and
offer boxes, packing supplies and locks to help out with all
your storage needs. Their key pad gate access, 24 hour video
surveillance cameras, individual unit door alarms and on-site
caretaker provide the peace of mind you expect when storing
your possessions.
Kelsey supports the local community by donating prizes to
the South Okanagan Chamber of Commerce participants,
donating a storage unit to the OK Falls Wild West Fest and
sponsoring the local Tiny Tots T-Ball team. They participated in
the Chamber sponsored Business Showcase this spring and
look forward to the many other great events hosted here in
Okanagan Falls. You can reach Kelsey at 250.497.EASY (3279),
Change to Okanagan Falls
Landfi ll Hours
To make it easier for residents to access the
Okanagan Falls Landfi ll on weekdays, the RDOS
has changed the hours of operation. Starting Monday, July
2nd, 2012 the Okanagan Falls Landfi ll will open at 10 am and
close at 1:45 pm from Monday to Friday.
Don Hamilton, RDOS Solid Waste Facilities Coordinator,
feels the changes will benefi t most of the residents using the
Okanagan Falls Landfi ll. “We get a number of requests each
year to keep the landfi ll open in the early afternoon. Closing
before noon makes it diffi cult for people to get their recycling
and yard waste loads ready and make it to the landfi ll on time.”
The Okanagan Falls Landfi ll is also stopping their ‘once a
month’ Saturdays openings. From March to November the
Landfi ll was opening on the 3rd Saturday of the month. Very few
people used the landfi ll on these Saturdays. The last Saturday
opening at the Okanagan Falls Landfi ll was June 16th.
The Okanagan Falls Landfi ll will soon become one of the fi rst
construction and demolition recycling and disposal sites in the
BC Interior. Mixed loads of construction and demolition waste
will be sorted for reuse and recycling potential. Residents will
still be able to bring furniture, recyclables and yard waste to the
Okanagan Falls Landfi ll. Food waste and bagged garbage will
remain prohibited from deposit at the site, as these items are
attractants to bears and other predators. Residents with food
waste or bagged garbage should use the Campbell Mountain
Sanitary Landfi ll in Penticton or include it within their Curbside
Garbage Program for safe disposal.
For more information on the Okanagan Falls Landfi ll, contact
the RDOS Solid Waste Department at 250-490-4129 or toll free
at 1-877-610-3737 or email to info@rdos.bc.ca.
Kal-Rec Happenings
with Bruce Shepherd, Kal-Rec Commission Board Member
“The Dirty Dozen” - a small but stalwart band of volunteers
answered the call to help clean up Pioneer Park in the cold
and rain on Saturday, June 8th. A good start was made on
tidying up around the garden beds, but much remains to be
done, both there as well as at the Old Hotel Park. We are
hoping that the following new initiative, which was launched by
local volunteers, will help us to get the Parks’ condition back up
to the satisfaction of all …
Adopt a Piece of Your Park - Some families have taken upon
themselves to look after a specifi c park area. In support of their
initiative and in hopes of encouraging others to help as well,
Kal-Rec has ordered some garden plaques that will be installed
in areas adopted by volunteers. Aside from providing some
deserved recognition for their efforts, the plaques should also
help to avoid any duplication of effort by additional volunteers.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Bruce
Shepherd (email bsthegoodshepherd@gmail.com or call 250-
497-8450). And a big thank-you to the Winters, Roos, Dahl,
Cranston and King families for starting this initiative!
But I Pay Taxes … Aside from Kaleden’s many other
attractions, many moved here to enjoy the public facilities
provided here, together with lower taxes. The primary reason
for this combination has to do with what historically has been
a high level of volunteerism. Sadly, volunteers have been on
the decline lately. For example, Kal-Rec is currently short of
couple of Directors. Without volunteers, only two things can
happen with regard to the operation and maintenance of our
public facilities ... either taxes go up or the level of care goes
down. Your choice, folks!

RCMP Update
The internet offers criminals new ways to take advantage
of others like cyber stalking, frauds and scams, as well as
hacking other people’s computers and parents need to educate
themselves about the risks which youths can encounter in
cyber world.
An honest, open and supportive relationship is the best tool
parents have in order to talk to children and youth about
diffi cult subjects and important issues. It sends the message
that your children can approach you with their problems
without feeling they are being judged. Because children are
now being exposed to diffi cult issues at a much younger age
than previous generations, they may not fully understand
the complicated nature of these subjects. Research shows
that even though children will most often go to their parents
for answers, teenagers tend to turn more to their friends, the
media or people outside the family. “That’s why it’s important
to talk to your children when they are young, before they start
getting inaccurate information from other sources”, says Cpl
TRUDEAU. “And speaking of other sources, we can’t ignore
some of the pit falls the internet and social media can pose.
The internet is a great place to meet new people and make
new friends, but not everyone online has good intentions.”
I recommend parents visit www.deal.org, which is a website
operated the by the Youth Engagement Section of the RCMP
and is part of the National Youth Services branch of the
RCMP’s Crime Prevention Services. On that site, people will
fi nd tons of up to date information on topics like youth gangs,
internet safety, bullying, relationship safety, drugs and alcohol,
sexuality and more.
“Social media has overtaken pornography as the #1 activity on
the Web. If that statement doesn’t compel you to research this
further and speak to your children about the time they spend
surfi ng, I don’t know what will.”
Citizens on Patrol in Okanagan Falls
We are coming into prime evening walk time. Remember,
light coloured clothing is much easier to see. Carry a light, so
you may be seen in the dark, and always walk facing the oncoming
traffi c. Bikes for night riding have to display lights front
and back, and remember you always have to wear a helmet.
Vehicles should always be ready to have pedestrians and
cyclists sharing the road.
Besides having our vehicle mechanically prepared for travel,
we can do more. Clean off your headlights before you start
your trip, as it will help you see better at night. Clean your
windshield and remove unnecessary clutter from the vehicle
interior. Carry a fi rst aid kit and always use your seat belts.
Cell phones and smart phones are never to be operated by the
driver while in motion.
Citizens on Patrol is a volunteer group out there to be additional
eyes and ears for the RCMP. After a clearance by the RCMP,
some in-house training, and a couple of ride-a-longs, we will
ask for four hours a month of your time. For further information,
please phone 250-488-1647 between 10 am to 3 pm every day.
Curb Appeal is Critical
with Brian Moen, Realtor with Royal LePage Locations West
Alluring or ho-hum ... How’s your curb appeal? When you are
ready to sell your home, be sure to pay close attention to the
exterior and strive for that ‘wow factor’. You want your home to
stand out and shine!
Prospective buyers driving past your property will make snap
judgments on whether they want to slow down and see your
home, or simply drive away. If the exterior is poorly maintained,
with uncut grass, peeling paint on the windows, a dowdy door,
or sinking eaves troughs, they’ll assume the inside is just as
uncared for. But if a buyer sees an attractive, appealing façade
with a nice-looking lawn to boot, they’re going to want to see
more ... much more.
Beckon buyers up to your front door by painting it in a contrasting
colour to the rest of your house. Dark jewel tones of red, blue
or green will add a little drama. Consider embellishing the door
further with an ornate knocker, polished-metal kick plate or a
sumptuous seasonal wreath. Replace plain doorknob hardware
with something more attractive.
If your light fi xtures and house numbers are looking dull,
add a fresh coat of paint to make them look like new. Brass
accessories should shine or you may want to refi nish them. On
a cool, dull day leave lights on ... warm lighting creates a cozy
ambiance.
Outside your door, planters or urns in resin or cast iron
add appeal and interest. In the fall, fi ll them with colourful
chrysanthemums that will last through to the fi rst frost. When
signs of winter appear, consider using tall evergreens or
dogwood.
Need a new mailbox? An imaginative mailbox adds character
to your front door, whether it is a whimsical wood box made to
look like a country cottage or a wrought iron creation with the
antique look of yesteryear.
If you have pets (especially dogs), clean up any waste and
ensure there are no lingering pet odours. Consider taking
Fido for a walk, if you’re going to show your home. Not all
prospective buyers are animal lovers, and a barking dog could
intimidate them. Also, be sure the lawn and/or landscaping is
in pristine condition.
Buy a new ‘welcome mat’! It’s simple, but effective. When
prospective buyers step from the impressive outside of your
house to the inside, and see clean, clutter free rooms, they’ll be
better able to picture themselves living in it. They’ll hopefully
feel right at home, and you will have succeeded in creating a
memorable fi rst impression.
Please contact me with any questions you may have, and
remember, my advice and suggestions are always free.
See you next month!
brought to you by
Pharmasave
Okanagan Falls
Summer Skin Care
Well, June has come and gone and most of you probably have not even
considered slathering on the sunscreen yet considering the less than
stellar weather we have been having this year. But, you may be surprised
to learn that sunscreen should be applied even on cloudy and overcast
days, as UV rays penetrate cloud coverage. Read on for more helpful
hints on how to stay safe in the sun.
Which Sunscreen?
Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and
UVB. Use an SPF of at least 15; people with higher sensitivity to the sun
(eg. those who burn easily) may require an SPF of 30 or more. Choose a
waterproof sunscreen if you plan on participating in activities that
involve water or heavy sweating.
Sunscreen Application
It has been reported that most sunscreen users only apply 50% of the
recommended amount. This decreases the SPF by 50%. Be sure to
follow these tips to ensure optimal protection: apply sunscreen liberally
and be sure that all exposed skin is covered; apply at least 30 minutes
before sun exposure; and reapply every 2 hours, after swimming, heavy
sweating and toweling o.
Around The Farm ...
Random thoughts for the rural lifestyle with Ray Keetch
Talking about random here we go …
Espresso - What makes a good Espresso? Freshly roasted
beans is the most important aspect of a good espresso.
Personally, I prefer a medium roasted Arabica bean. Espresso
has far less caffeine than regular drip coffee and the strong
fl avour associated with espresso are the oils that an Espresso
Machine can leach out with pressure and heat. A perfect
espresso will take anywhere from 22-28 seconds to pour no
matter what size. Anything less and the shot will not have been
able to extract all of the oils and will be weak and watery. If the
shot takes longer, the espresso will become acidic. The crema,
the wonderful foam on top, should have three distinct colours
of brown and have legs enough to last until the last sip. Poor
crema is usually a sign of poor beans or a dirty machine. Lastly,
your shot of espresso should taste like dark chocolate. If you
like Latte’s or the like then most of this will not apply, because
milk and sugar hide the true qualities of the espresso shot.
Sourdough Bread - How do you make a ‘starter’? Sourdough
bread is easy to make if you have made a good starter. Take
2 cups of whole wheat fl our and add enough warm water to
make a pancake-like batter. Cover this batter and set aside
in a warm spot for 12 hours. Then add another ½ cup of unbleached
fl our and warm water, keeping a pancake batter like
consistency. Set aside in a warm spot for another 12 hours and
repeat once more the following day. By now, the starter should
have a foamy like consistency and have a stale beer-like smell.
This is because the natural yeasts have multiplied and made
your starter ‘active’. If the starter isn’t like described, or worse
has mold on it, discard and start over. Always make sure all
your equipment is clean. I use a glass bowl and cover it loosely
with a plastic bag, just to keep dust and other nasty things out
of the starter mix. Use about half for your fi rst sourdough bread
and keep the rest in your fridge for your next bread. To make
your next loaf, take the starter out of the fridge and feed it with
fl our and set aside in a warm place for 12 hours. Again, save
a cup worth in your fridge for next time. My starter has been
going for years.
Is too much Protein harmful to my dog? Old wives tales
about dry dog foods high in protein causing kidney disease run
rampant both on and off the internet. Many people deprive their
dogs of what they crave most for fear of damaging their health!
First of all, it is important that we understand that protein isn’t
only a nutrient - the amino acids it is made up of also serve as
building blocks for body tissues, organs, enzymes, hormones,
antibodies and so on - roughly half of the dry body mass of a
dog consists of protein. Knowing this, it is easy to understand
that growing puppies need protein to build above mentioned
body tissues, organs, enzymes, hormones, antibodies and
both adults and growing puppies constantly need to replace
and rebuild these as well. The body recycles amino acids
to some extent, but part of them need to be replaced. Many
people cite old, outdated research that claims high protein
percentages in the food are harmful to dogs and do all kinds of
damage, especially to the liver. The fact is that these studies
were conducted by feeding dogs foods that were made from
poor quality, hard to digest protein sources.
Why Feldenkrais®? Designed to Learn
By Lynn Andersen, Feldenkrais Teacher®
Life’s only constant is change. There is no movement, posture
or way of thinking that could meet your ever changing needs
living in this world. You can not organize your movements or
thoughts once and be set for life. So, it is your ability to learn
and change with experience that is your biggest resource.
Most of the movement and mental/emotional repertoire you
currently using were created from your childhood experiences,
accidents, and traumatic events. Designed through a child’s
perspective, the strategies created then may interfere with
present day “adult” living. These fi lters that organize your
choices and movements need updating.
Gifted with unlimited potential, humans have to be great
learners to be successful and to survive. It is amazing the
endless variety that life can bring your way and the speed in
which it can happen. Lucky your brain and nervous system are
designed to learn and change. You have what it takes to fi gure
out this often puzzling world.
The Feldenkrais Method® enhances your inner resources by
helping you to update your brain and nervous system’s fi les.
Go from limitations to endless possibilities. Determine how far
you go and what you accomplish. There is no limit.
Getting Enough Exercise?
Are Your Investments?
By Justin White
Now that spring has arrived, it’s easier to get outside to run,
bike or do other physical activities you enjoy. And of course,
the more active you are, the more effi cient your body works.
This holds true for your investments too: The more “exercise”
they get, the more potential they have to work on your behalf.
Just how can your investments get more exercise? Here’s two
easy ways they can get lots of activity and you can keep your
portfolio in good shape:
One, is Systematic Investing. This is like exercising regularly,
when you continually put money “in motion.” In other words,
you put the same amount of money into the same investments
at regular intervals, perhaps investing $100 a month in ABC
stock. You can have a set amount sent directly from your bank
account to your investment account.
As the price of ABC stock, is constantly changing, your $100
investment will buy a different numbers of shares each month.
Just as you would pedal harder going up a hill and less when
going down, when ABC stock price goes down, your $100 will
buy more shares. When the price goes up, you’ll automatically
buy fewer shares. A smooth ride is a better ride and over
time, systematic investing typically results in a lower average
cost per share than if you were to make sporadic lump-sum
investments. Exercising is easier if you do a little everyday,
each week, than if you sit all winter doing nothing and then
try to go for a run when the weather turns nice. Keep in mind
that systematic investing doesn’t guarantee a profi t or protect
against loss; however, if you can lower your cost of investing,
this will help boost your returns. This can also be an effective
way to take money from your retirement account(s) as well.
As you are selling through up and down markets just the same
as buying. Averaging is key.
Secondly, Dividend reinvestment. Think of it as your muscles
building and your strength building up after you’ve gone for
that run. After you have systematically invested, you can
build up even more shares of ABC stock through dividend
reinvestment. When you reinvest dividends, you don’t even
have to take money from other sources to increase your shares.
Instead you can simply request that the dividend being paid by
Company ABC get reinvested into more shares of the same
stock. It’s an effortless way of adding shares. Don’t forget that
dividends can be increased, decreased or eliminated without
notice; however, exercising your investment dollars in these
ways can help you keep your portfolio in good shape, which
can enable you to make healthy progress toward your longterm
fi nancial goals.
If you need help exercising your investments, or have any
questions or fi nancial needs. I can help. Call Justin White at
Share Your Happy Okanagan Summer
with Wendy MacKay
As summer is just around the corner and the Okanagan seems
to expand with tourists, this is your opportunity as a resident to
enjoy an abundance of fruits, vegetables, great wines, cheeses
and herbs grown locally. Visit local farmer’s markets, festivities
and celebrations. Take a drive down a road you’ve never taken
before and see what you can discover. Promote your favourite
winery, store, and activities by talking about what’s in your area.
Each of us individually can create awareness, but collectively
we create a movement.
Our communities rely upon increased revenue as a result of
tourism. Buy locally, encourage friends and relatives to visit
and if you can’t have them stay in your own home, give them
a list of great B&B’s, motels, RV sites, etc. to book. Get out to
local events and support the people around you. Be active in
every way you’re able and enjoy life here. We have so much
to be grateful for!
Happy people are busy people and are seldom heard
complaining. If you’re happy and you know it, share it. Pass
it forward. If everyone in the area were to put on a smile, feel
grateful and share their reasons of why they love to live here,
what a difference it could make. I look forward to being a part
of this movement. How about you?
Let’s set an intention to welcome neighbours, residents and
tourists to the Okanagan and be recognized as the happiest
place in BC to live.
Even faster than the rest of the school year, June has fl own
by! It’s amazing to look at all the students and see how much
everyone has grown in the past 10 months!
June was an exciting month at KES. A highlight would be
the Volunteer Tea. The school organized this event to say
“thanks” to the many volunteers who make our school so great.
There were lots of one-to-one readers, community members
and parents in attendance. Each class also gave a short
performance, which was appreciated by all. Thanks again to
all our wonderful volunteers!
The family BBQ was another big success. We had 36 families
in attendance and the highlight would be the parent vs. student
soccer game. I’m still not clear on who actually won, as the
stories seem to vary. The one thing both sides did manage to
agree on was that it was a lot of fun!
We would like to wish all 27 of our Grade 5’s the best of luck as
they leave the halls of KES and move on to the halls of middle
school. You guys will do great!
Have a great summer everyone and we’ll see you at the beach!

School Trustee Report for SD67
with Ginny Manning, Chair and Trustee for SD67
Each year the Board recognizes and thanks outstanding groups
for their contributions to the school district. Judy Jeffries,
Sandra Henderson, Erin Beck and Sherron Tierney from Meals
on Wheels - Penticton Regional Hospital Auxiliary - Breakfast
Club have served 2022 breakfasts to students at West Bench,
Columbia, and Queen’s Park Elementary Schools. That is 750
volunteer hours!
Penticton Secondary School Scholarship and Bursary
Foundation was started 1985. Today, the foundation has an
endowment fund of $1.1 million dollars. The scholarship and
bursary money goes toward helping Penticton Secondary
students and Princess Margaret Secondary students pay for
post-secondary education. Over 25 years Mr. Len Cox has
created a legacy for decades to come. Mr. Cox was recently
awarded the 2012 Partnership Award from the BC Principal/
Vice-Principal Association.
The district has not had a capital plan approved for the last 10
years. We understand that we may be eligible on this round
and will submit a capital plan in the fall. A new gymnasium for
Summerland Secondary School is the highest priority.
Under Phase 3 of the playground equipment program, Trout
Creek Elementary will receive $25,000 for repair and/or
upgrades of it’s playground equipment.
The District Achievement Contract or Strategic Plan to
support student achievement was received by the Board. The
Achievement Contract focuses on two district goals - literacy
and school completion. It looks at literacy and other factors
that might impact a child’s ability to complete school and the
interventions and supports that can be put in place.
The new Principal at KVR Middle School is Steve DeVito. Steve
has been the Vice-Principal at KVR for the past four years.
The new Vice-Principal at Giant’s Head Elementary School is
Nancy Lomax. Nancy has been a Learning Assistance teacher
at GH for the past 10 years and acting Vice-Principal for the
last fi ve months. Roland Holowaty has been appointed to the
Vice-Principal position at Wiltse Elementary. Lloyd Lindsay will
be the new Principal at McNicoll Park Middle School. Lloyd
has been the Principal at Connect Ed for the past year.
Uplands Principal Susan Johnston has been appointed as
Assistant Superintendent of Schools in SD57 (Prince George).
School District 53 Board Report
with Marieze Tarr, Chairperson SD53
Joan Chambers, the Okanagan-Similkameen Literacy
Outreach Coordinator, presented the District Literacy Plan
to the Board of Education at our regular June Meeting. She
heads a task group made up of representatives from Interior
Health, Okanagan College, SD53, SD67, Ministry of Social
Development, Penticton Museum, Penticton Public Library,
Child Care Resource and Referral, Okanagan Boys and Girls
Club and Communities for Kids to name a few. The Penticton
Wine Country Chamber of Commerce is the steward of the
group and also a member. It was encouraging to hear how all
of these groups are collaborating to set Literacy Goals for an
area that includes the communities of Summerland all the way
south to Osoyoos and west to Hedley. If you would like to learn
more about this plan, visit www.literacynowso-s.ca.
Megan Abele, BC Manager for Roots of Empathy, visited our
District recently and was very impressed by how embedded
Roots of Empathy is in our communities and also by the
success of the programs in SD53. She is planning to host a
training session for Instructors in Oliver this fall. If you would
like more information about this program, please visit www.
rootsofempathy.org. If you think you would like to be trained
as an instructor, please contact myself at mtarr@sd53.bc.ca.
We are very excited to announce that the District’s application
for a Request for Proposal to the Industry Training Authority
has been accepted. The District will be receiving a grant of
$20,000, which will be used to focus on maintaining the work
being done in Secondary School Apprenticeship Programs. We
will also look at improving a more hands on Grade 6/7 program.
Our District has received $298,052 in Learning Improvement
Funds, as part of Bill 22 which was passed this last March.
Administrators are consulting with staff around the learning
needs of students in classes for the 2012-2013 school year and
will submit requests around teacher, EA and paraprofessional
support. The Superintendent is currently in consultations with
SOSTU and CUPE with the goal of establishing a tentative
spending plan before the end of June. This plan will be
revisited in September for further consultations before going
to the Board of Education for approval in September and then
being submitted to the Ministry of Education.
The Board of Education gave the 2012/2013 Annual Budget
and Bylaw three readings and it was approved. We had two
Budget Advisory Meetings with our partner groups (PAC, CUPE,
SOSTU and Administrators) and the board hopes to expand
the Advisory Meeting next year to include our Municipal Partner
Groups. Due to the cut in our Funding Protection Grant (which
were in the past paid to districts to offset declining enrollment),
we will be faced with a reduction in funding of $337,461 from
the Ministry. We will be receiving $298,000 in additional funding
through the Learning Improvement Fund, but this is targeted
funding to help improve classroom learning conditions. It is
interesting to note that of our $24 million revenue, 81% is spent
on Instruction, 5% on District and Administration Staff, 11% on
Operations and Maintenance and 3% on Transportation.
Congratulations to all our grads! The Board of Education
wishes everyone a safe and relaxing summer. Our next Board
of Education Regular Meeting will be on September 26, 2012.
80 people attended our 25th Anniversary Celebration on June
14th. But, for those of you who missed it - WOW! Did we ever
have a great Barbeque! Some of our original members were
able to attend (Mary Ferris, Audrey Steeves, Lily Edmonds,
Dolly Duncan, Bob and Norma Painter) and a few graced
us with their reminiscences of the early days. Bill Barton
and Trevor and Muriel Jones were away. Energy was high
throughout and the food was great!
Saturday), Music & Coffee (Wednesday & Friday mornings)
Bridge (Thursday 1:00), Crib (Thursday 7:30) and Art
programs to be added in September. A Digital Camera Class
has been suggested with Bruce Cox willing to lead and teach
participants. Watch for more information in September’s Skaha
Matters Report.
When most of us wake up in the morning and if we take the
time to think about it, we usually feel as if we’re in our 30’s
or 40’s at least. It is when we actually struggle out of bed
that the reality hits us - we don’t have the bodies we used to
have. Joints ache, muscles hurt, balance fails, eyesight and
hearing have declined. Do you realize that the more we give
in to these failings, the worse they get? When we decide not
to volunteer at a community event, not to get up and help with
clean up or program organization, not to walk when we can get
a ride, we are only doing ourselves harm. Once we lose our
abilities in memory, strength, and movement it is very hard to
get them back! Don’t get us wrong - we are as guilty as any of
you, but we now fi nd that when we “force” ourselves to get up
and out and take part, our mood changes, energy comes from
somewhere, and we feel better about the world. We don’t have
to do a lot, “every little bit helps” and with a lot of little bits we
can have an awesome Seniors Centre!
Okanagan Falls Women’s Institute
with Eleanor Walker
Members from our branch and district attended the BC
Women’s Institute Annual General Meeting and the Federated
Women’s Institute of Canada Convention in Sidney, BC this
month. They carried with them our two colourful banners - one
historical and one current. Both were greatly admired by those
from across Canada attending the conference.
A little history is in order to explain why it is a great honour for the
BC Women’s Institute to host the FWIC conference. The latter
is our link to the Associated Country Women of the World who
are the only women’s NGO to have a seat at the United Nations.
For 91 years, our branch has contributed to the distribution
of tools, machinery, seeds, goats, clothing - in fact anything
that increased the ability of women and children in desperate
countries to survive and become more independent. Once a
need is identifi ed, this support is always made directly to the
women, and not to any local political or government organization.
Locally, plans are coming together for the completion of the
bandshell. The architects and engineers work is nearly ready
for presentation which will allow us to move forward, anticipating
the promised help from the rest of the community. It will also
facilitate applying for grants.
This past June, we were happy to award the Citizenship and
Academic Trophies at Okanagan Falls Elementary School,
along with the $1000 scholarship to the South Okanagan
Senior Secondary School. Congratulations to the recipients!
As we take our break for the summer, we can refl ect with pride
our 91 year service to homes and countries around the world.
We hope that everyone always has a great summer in our
homes and country.
An Affordable Healthy Pet Food Choice
By Dee-anne Jalava
We all know good nutrition and exercise is important for a
healthy lifestyle. The same goes for our pets. We want our pets
to be happy and healthy and most of us need that goal fulfi lled
at an affordable price.
I went on a mission to fi nd an excellent food, for my 8 year
old cat and two miniature schnauzers aged 13 and 11, and
at an affordable price, for me. After doing some research, I
purchased Pet Chef Express dog food and then the cat food.
My pets loved it! In fact, as I gradually introduced the new
food, my cat would pick out the Pet Chef Express fi rst and not
even fi nish the old brand and then meow for more.
Made with human grade wild pacifi c salmon and free range
chicken, Pet Chef Express Premium Natural Foods are
formulated to meet the nutritional profi les for all life stages of
cats and dogs, as established by the AAFCO. They contain no
wheat, no corn, no by products, no artifi cial fl avours/colours/
preservatives, no added salt, no added sugar, no animal
digests, no beet pulp, no gluten meal, or any of the very
misleading ‘natural fl avours’. The added bonus is that it is a
Canadian made product.
Check out the website at www.petchefexpress.ca for more
information and comparisons. I am proud to be able to provide
free home delivery to customers here in the South Okanagan.
Ladies Auxiliary - Royal Canadian Legion #227
with Audrey Steeves
Two new members, Louise Head and Dorothy Ann Wiens,
were initiated into the Okanagan Falls Legion Auxiliary at its
June meeting by President Iris Moldowan.
The members approved a donation of $2000 to be presented to
Branch #227 and a donation of $500 to be given to the Legion
Foundation towards the expenses of the BC Senior Games
being held in Burnaby this August.
June was a busy month for the Auxiliary with catering for
two Memorial Teas, participating in the Branch’s June 24th
Candlelight Service at the Cemetery, followed by an Open
House at the Legion afterwards. The LA looks forward to
participating in the July 1st Canada Day celebrations, as well
as the usual arranging for the Friday and Saturday 5pm Meat
Draws and the Saturday Drop-in Bingos.
The Auxiliary will be presenting two bursaries of $1000 each to
two Grade 12 students from Okanagan Falls graduating from
the South Okanagan Secondary School at their ceremonies
on June 27th. The annual LA Sportsmanship trophy will be
awarded to a Grade 7 student at the Okanagan Falls Elementary
School on their June 27th awards day.
A Zone report from the May 26th South Okanagan and
Similkameen Ladies Auxiliaries meeting held at Summerland
Branch #22 was given by delegate Helen Brewis. Since the
2011 Convention, the LA’s have lost 90 members. The 2013
Provincial Convention will be held at Whistler in May. LA’s
were asked to make a donation to the Legion’s Track & Field
competitions to be held in Langley, BC. Summerland LA
celebrated their 85th Birthday on June 8th. The Attendance
Plaque was won by Okanagan Falls LA. The next Zone meeting
will be in September. Following the meeting, workshops were
held for secretaries, treasurers, and committees.
Other News - It was reported that the Lions Annual Dog Walk
held in May in Okanagan Falls raised over $2000. Winner of
the LA’s Mother Day Hamper was Nicole Woodard. Following
the closing of the June meeting, members enjoyed a delicious
pot luck luncheon. Winner of the meeting draws were Iris
Moldowan and Colleen Clark. The next regular meeting will be
September 7th.

Planning Ahead For The Inevitable
with Lesley Luff of Credible Cremation Services Ltd.
Having been in the Funeral Business for over twenty years, I
have heard about all the excuses there are to be made against
Planning Ahead.
1. ...... “I don’t need that just yet”.
2. ...... “I’m too busy to think about that right now”.
3. ...... “I can’t afford it right now”.
4. ...... “I have to talk it over with my husband/wife/children”.
5. ...... “It is on my (to do) list”.
6. ...... “I have to get a Will made fi rst”.
7. ...... “We don’t talk about those things”.
8. ...... “My family will take care of that, when the time comes”.
Case in point: I am sure my own husband would have given
the same answers, had he been asked if he had planned
ahead. He died of a massive heart attack in 1995 at the age of
57. He was enjoying a business luncheon at the time, and I am
sure death was the last thing on his mind. Needless to say, we
were devastated, in shock and totally unprepared.
Death is one of the mysteries of our time on earth, and probably
always will be. We all would opt for a quick and painless
demise; however, that choice is not ours to make. Most folks
are not afraid of being dead, what bothers them is the process.
No one wants to lose their dignity, their faculties, or to face
life’s end in pain or isolation. We cannot predict when and
where death will come upon us, and perhaps that is a blessing
in itself. However, there are several practical steps one can
take now, which will not only make things easier, but will also
release family members from having to make diffi cult emotional
decisions when the death of a loved one occurs.
Make a Will and review it regularly.
Discuss your wishes with your Attorney/Executor/Family
members.
Organize and Document all your paperwork.
Plan Ahead - Make your Pre-Arrangements.
