1st Annual Bike Rally Family Event
Goes As Planned
Motorbikes line up along Hwy 97 in OK Falls for the 1st Annual Bike Rally Family Event.
The OK Falls Hotel and Alls Well Security held their 1st Annual
Bike Rally Family Event the weekend of May 11-13th. Event
organizers say the event was well attended, directly helped
boost the local economy, and most importantly, ran as planned.
The Bike Rally consisted of three main venues: an extended
beverage garden patio area at the OK Falls Hotel; Centennial
Park was host to live entertainment, displays, and vendors; and
a Kid’s Theme Park was set up outside at the school. The event
kicked off with a Poker Run, followed by many competitions in
the fairgrounds over the weekend. There was lots to see and do.
Thanks goes to Alls Well Security, to Greg Rhyason for his
fi nancial support, to the clothing vendors and the remarkable
tattoo artist, to the many sponsors, to the bands, and to all the
volunteers that helped make this 1st Annual Bike Rally Family
Event a great success! Congratulations to all the winners of the
bike competitions, event draws, pie contest, arm wresting ... you
all did a great job. Proceeds from this event supported Juvenile
Diabetes and “Shalee’s Walk”. Shalee McAfee says ‘thank
you’ to all who donated towards this cause to help fi nd a cure.
Appreciative of the support and warm welcome our community
gave to the many out of town guests, event organizers are looking
forward to planning another successful Family Bike Rally for
the same weekend next year. They hope to see you all there!
Girl Guides Get Gardening
The 1st Okanagan Open Falls Daily Girl Guides 11am recently - 11pm took on an exciting
legacy 250.497.6633 project in Okanagan 1045 Main Falls. Street, The group Okanagan was recently Falls
awarded $500 from the Girl Guides of Canada “Tree Planting
Project”. Leader Christina Doherty and assistant Jackie Snair
organized the event, with some help from the Okanagan Falls
Parks and Rec, and some fi nancial help from the Okanagan
Falls Beavers Colony. The community’s waterfront Kenyon
Park is currently undergoing a huge transformation, and
Christina thought the tree planting project would tie in well with
it. The garden, featuring the trees along with various shrubs,
was planted right below the new entrance sign to the renovated
park. It is a project we can all look at and be proud of for years
to come, with a bronze plaque to herald our legacy.
2012 Citizen Survey June 1-14
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen
Board wants to know what you think about your
local government and will conduct a telephone
citizen’s survey between June 1-14, 2012.
Approximately 400 residents will be telephoned asking to
share their opinions and ideas about the Regional District
as their local government. Survey results will assist the
Regional Board to evaluate programs, improve services, and
set budget priorities. Signifi cant sections of the survey will
question residents on Quality of Life, Service Satisfaction,
Environment, Communications, Information Technology, and
Fiscal Responsibility.
The 15-20 minute telephone survey is completely anonymous
and will be conducted by Discovery Research with an accuracy
of plus or minus 4.9%, at the 95% confi dence level. The number
of surveys in each of our eight electoral areas is based on a
percentage formula utilizing the 2011 Population Census.
Chair Dan Ashton states, “the results and analyses of the
survey will provide the Board and staff with information that
will be used to make sound, strategic decisions in a variety
of areas, including service improvements and enhancements,
annual budget planning and implementation, and RDOS policy
planning and development. The RDOS completed a Citizen
Survey in 2010 which has been used as a tool to gauge public
satisfaction.”
It is anticipated the results will be available in July and will
posted on the website at www.rdos.bc.ca The participation of
each of our randomly selected citizens is very important to the
success of the survey and its use.
OK Falls Revitalization Committee
with Diane Schlamp, Chairperson
The OK Falls Downtown Revitalization Committee has been
busy this spring! First, we want to thank the community for
their support of our fi rst “Pitch in Canada” Clean Up Day held
on April 27th. A number of community members, along with the
students of OK Falls Elementary School, spent just over one
hour gathering 43 bags of garbage and 3 bags of returnables
that the Girl Guides received for their fundraising. Thanks
also to Argo Maintenance who supplied the trucks, signs and
bags, Fabio from Heritage Market for donating water, and
‘Pitch In Canada’ who donated bags. Our job was made so
much easier by citizens who routinely pick up garbage on the
roadways during their daily walks. Thank you to them as well.
On May 14th, the street-side fl ower barrels were planted with
grasses, some perennials, and a few annuals. Thank you to Big
Horn Natural Compost for donating a yard of compost to top
up our barrels. Special thanks to all the business people who
faithfully water and maintain the barrels throughout the year.
Thank you to everyone who signed our petition to the Ministry
of Highways asking for a study, solutions, and to implement
changes for the corner on Hwy 97 with the fl ashing light, making
it safer for residents and travellers. There is also concern about
the intersection at Green Lake Road and Hwy 97.
What are we going to do next? Our heart is in this community
and we want people who travel through OK Falls to stop here
for a while, maybe even start a business, or retire here. It all
takes time and if you have some concerns or ideas to improve
our community, email myself Diane at dianes3773@gmail.com

Tom Siddon
Director of
RDOS Area ‘D’
FROM THE DIRECTOR
OH, DEER!!
What can the answer be??
My wife Pat and I have lived in
Kaleden for 20 years. Our yard has
never been fenced. We have always
had nice gardens, trees and fl owers,
and enjoy the occasional deer or two
lying in the summer shade. However
over the last couple of years we
have been visited regularly by up
to a dozen deer at one time. They
demolish our gardens, are a menace
on the road, munch happily on the
shrubs and fl owers along the driveway, stare us down when
shooed away, and regularly harass our little dog Lucky. Oh
deer, what shall we do?
In my travels around Area ‘D’ I see that our problem is everyone’s
problem. Some neighbors erect high fences at great expense
to protect themselves from the exploding deer population. This
merely compounds the problem for the rest of us who must put
up with increased deer traffi c.
I’ve received numerous appeals from residents of Area ‘D’ who
are equally concerned about these four-footed creatures. It
seems we have only three choices:
a) Learn to live with our deer friends.
b) Tranquilize and relocate these deer to some remote,
unpopulated mountain valley at least 100 km away.
c) Undertake a humanitarian “cull” under the supervision of the
Provincial Environment Ministry (FLNRO).
I would like to know what you think. Drop me a line at RDOS:
tsiddon@rdos.bc.ca or leave a message at 250-490-4215.
Please indicate which of the options you would prefer. I will
publish the results in next month’s newsletter. Then we can get
on with fi nding an appropriate solution to this problem.
Event Coordinator Named - I am happy to announce that
following a formal search, Sharon Proctor of Okanagan Falls
has been selected to serve as our Event Coordinator for
Okanagan Falls events. Sharon has already been working
with her volunteer organizing committee to make preparations
for the Wild West Fest which will be held on September 29th.
She is employed by RDOS on a short term basis to coordinate
this and other festivities. Should you wish to assist Sharon
please give her a call at (250) 497-5701. Best of luck Sharon.
Happy Birthday Canada - Sharon is also working with
Janet Black at Parks and Recreation, and other community
partners to prepare a celebration of Canada’s 145th Birthday
on July 1st. Activities will include the Grand Opening of the
‘New’ Kenyon Park, celebrating our youth and seniors, and
appropriate recognition of the recently completed lakeshore
Heritage Walkway, including the memorial benches and the
Snodgrass plaque. We hope to see you there!
Accretion Study Underway - In order to properly defi ne the
corridor for a continuous public walkway from Lions Park to the
foot of Main Street, a legal and land title study is being initiated
by RDOS. This will delineate a number of ownership issues
along the Skaha lakeshore between Cedar Street and Main
Street.
Kaleden Public Meeting - On June 4th a special meeting
is being organized by the Kaleden Community Association
concerning the future KVR Trail through Kaleden. John Slater,
MLA, the Provincial Trails Manager (John Hawkings) and
representatives of FLNRO and RDOS are expected to attend.
This is a long-overdue opportunity for public discussion by the
residents of Kaleden and the trail users community. Hopefully
the affected property owners will attend. The meeting will be
held at the Kaleden Community Hall on Monday, June 4th at
7:00 pm.
The Legion’s Classic Rock ‘n’ Roll Night - Finally, don’t
forget the Elvis / Roy Orbison Tribute night at the OK Falls
Legion starting at 7pm on Saturday, June 16th. Everyone is
welcome and the admission is free.
offi ce (EDO) in Okanagan Falls is a part of a dynamic and very
exciting organization that promotes our province, supports our
communities and EDO’s and represents our economic interests
in Victoria, Ottawa and internationally.
I recently attended the EDABC Summit in Vancouver. The theme
for this event was BC’s Economic Action Plan ‘Canada Starts
Here: Taking BC Global’. Much of the conference focused on
the considerable economic and employment opportunities in
the Lower Mainland and in the north of the province and on the
growing importance of Asian countries as trading partners. As I
listened to presentations about major infrastructural upgrades
in far-fl ung corners of the province and multi-billion dollar deals
with China, South Korea and India, I began to consider the
relevance of these developments for us and how we could
possibly get a piece of the action here in the Okanagan.
As I listened to each presentation, I considered the implications
for us, of these growing sectors of the provincial economy. In
particular, I began to question how the housing and service
needs of workers in these areas could be met and considerable
energy requirements for these industries be provided whilst the
province - and Canada as a whole are striving to reduce carbon
emissions and achieve stringent environmental targets. The
Green Economy in BC is undoubtedly a rapid growing sector
of our economy which is borne out of necessity. Presentations
by companies such as BC Hydro and Fortis confi rmed that
they are acutely aware of the need to provide suffi cient clean
energy to help achieve environmental targets and to fuel our
insatiable appetite for energy. Perhaps there are opportunities
for us here?
As stated in recent articles such as Skaha Matters and
the Western, the EDO has been exploring the potential of
certain Clean Technologies for the Okanagan Falls area. This
conference has reinforced in my mind, the need to hone in on
realistic and viable green economy options for our community.
These green businesses don’t necessarily have to be complex,
high tech enterprises. One particularly inspiring EDABC
presentation was made by a First Nations gentleman called
Aaron Joe. He has built a successful business on the Sunshine
Coast called Salish Soils Inc. He has built a business turning
waste from compostable kitchen waste and the local fi shing
industry into high quality compost. With our local agricultural
industries, fragile ecosystems and scarce water supplies in Area
‘D’, I know that there are many, innovative, largely untapped
opportunities, like Aaron Joe’s, just waiting to be fi lled. If you
have an idea that you would like to discuss in confi dence, then
I would encourage you to make contact with your economic
development offi ce in Okanagan Falls.
If you are considering relocating to the Okanagan Falls or
South Skaha area, already have a business in the area, or
would like to start-up a business, we are here to assist you.
Why Feldenkrais®?
To Reduce Stress
By Lynn Andersen, Feldenkrais Teacher®
Stress is a natural response that occurs whenever your mind
perceives a threat. It is designed to help you rise to challenges
and protect you from (emotional or physical) danger. Your body,
boosted by adrenaline, uses your programmed “fi ght, fl ight or
freeze” responses to protect you without much thought.
If stress is a natural protective response, why then should we
stress about being stressed?
Your “safety protection” system is created for use in life
threatening situations only. Deal with the problem, use up
the extra energy and then reset. The systems necessary for
surviving are boosted by suppressing others. What is seen
as not as important at these moments are still very important
functions. The resources needed are focused away from your
digestion and immune system.
And here lies the problem. In our modern society, the part of
the nervous system designed for short term situations has
become where we live. This constant physical state of alarm
shuts down important functions long term and your health and
life suffers. Stress is the underlying cause of illness. Eventually
something breaks down, when your digestion and immune
system are left unsupported.
Make reducing stress a priority. Take a Feldenkrais® group
class, workshop or private sessions to reset your nervous
system for more inner peace and easier movement.
Thursday morning classes (11:00-12:15) run May 24 - July 12.
HEALTH TIP
brought to you by
Pharmasave
Okanagan Falls
What is a Stroke?
A stroke is a sudden loss of brain function. It is caused by the interruption
of blood flow to the brain (ischemic stroke) or the rupture of blood
vessels in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). The result of interrupted blood
flow or the rupture of blood vessels causes brain cells in the affected area
to die. The longer the brain goes without oxygen and nutrients supplied
by blood flow, the greater the risk of permanent brain damage.
Stroke warning signs.
The stroke warning signs can include: weakness or loss of strength;
numbness in the face, arm or leg; trouble speaking and/or confusion;
vision problems; unusual severe headaches; or dizziness and/or loss of
balance. These symptoms can be combined, have a sudden onset, and
last only termporarily. If you experience any of these symptoms, call
9-1-1 immediately.
Being active really does reduce stroke risk.
Moderate and high levels of physical activity can reduce the risk of all
types of strokes. Recently, researchers looked at 23 studies and
compared the risk of stroke or death among the physically active to
those who were inactive or unfit. Results revealed that people who were
active or fit had a 25 to 64 percent lower chance of stroke or death.
Spring Bass Catch & Release
Spring Bass Fishing
By Larry Martin
The Okanagan Bass Anglers Club had
a successful mid April trip to Osoyoos
Lake. Bass spawn in the spring and
they aggressively protect their nest
area. The South Okanagan is one
of the few jurisdictions that allows
fi shing and keeping of Bass during
their spawn. In most areas where Bass
fi shing is allowed during their spawn, it
is catch and release only. However, the
Okanagan Bass Anglers released all
the fi sh they caught.
June 2012
Members of several Bass Clubs traditionally converge on
Osoyoos Lake for the May long weekend. Some venture over
to the Christina Lake Fishing Derby, which has a $1000 prize
for the largest Bass.
There are several areas around Skaha Lake where Bass can
be caught casting from shore. Rocky areas around the trestle
in Okanagan Falls and most areas where the KVR is adjacent
to the water are good spots to fi sh from. I fi nd it somewhat
comical that boaters tend to cast into and along the shallow
rocks near the shore and those on shore tend to cast out
to deeper water. One may conclude that there are fi sh both
shallow and deep. When fi shing from shore, I prefer to vary my
cast along the shore and to deeper water in a fan pattern to
cover all the bases.
For more information on fi shing the local areas, just ask Larry
at fs-lemartin@shaw.ca.
Lewis’s Woodpecker
WANTED:
Lewis’s Woodpecker
The Lewis’s Woodpecker or
Melanerpes lewis occurs throughout
much of BC’s Southern Interior, but
is most abundant in the Okanagan
Valley. Federally, the Lewis’s
Woodpecker is considered to be a
threatened species due to its small
and locally distributed populations,
restricted range, and loss of habitat.
It is estimated that fewer than 1000
individuals occur in the province.
This bird has a glossy greenish-black head, back, wings and
tail, a rosy belly, grey collar and breast and a red face. Its
fl ight pattern is distinctive from other woodpeckers. Lewis’s
Woodpeckers fl y slow and direct, similar to crows or jays,
with long glides and aerial manoeuvres. It nests in cavities of
Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, or Cottonwood trees.
This migratory woodpecker has started to return to the
Okanagan and will begin nesting mid-June. We need your help
in recording sightings and nest trees of this rare woodpecker. If
you spot a Lewis’s Woodpecker or identify a nest tree, please
report it to the Wildlife Tree Stewardship Program Coordinator,
New Kaleden Winery On The Map
The Okanagan Falls Winery Association is now 13 wineries
strong, with the recent addition of Kaleden’s Topshelf Winery.
Although they had a soft opening last fall, they are planning
an offi cial Grand Opening on Saturday, June 30th from 2-6pm.
You can enjoy free tastings, along with cheese and a chocolate
fondue accompanied by cherries and/or strawberries, while
enjoying some entertainment. Village Cheese from Armstrong
is always on hand to compliment their wines. They also offer
Gelato from Medici’s in Oliver, with 3 fl avours to choose from.
June 2012
Topshelf Wine is aggressive, competitive and ambitious and
originates from a hockey and sports loving family. Topshelf
Winery dedicates their wines to all sports enthusiasts and wine
lovers. Their goal is to produce ambitious wines that cheer
quality for quality prices.
Myra and Len are from the Prairies and like so many hockey
parents, they spent most of their free time in hockey rinks.
They raised four children, who are now driving their twelve
grandchildren to hockey arenas and other sport facilities.
Their son Joel is a current pro hockey player and plays in
Switzerland. After Len’s early retirement they operated a lodge
for nine years on the Sunshine Coast of BC. They always loved
the Okanagan, so they searched until they found a beautiful
property in Kaleden. They are totally captivated with their new
passion ... grapes, so they planted a vineyard. This developed
into their love of wine.
Myra and Len are excited at their new venture and welcome
everyone to stop by for a tasting and say hello. And yes, there
is just a ‘touch’ of hockey to be seen everywhere you look.
Types of Ownership
with Brian Moen, Realtor with Royal LePage Locations West
Freehold, condo or co-op? Here’s a quick guide to help you
determine your type. As you embark on your hunt for housing
and begin perusing real estate listings, you will no doubt
encounter a strange new lexicon. You’ll encounter words and
acronyms like “chattel”, “estoppel” and “MLS”. And when it
comes to types of home ownership, the words look a bit more
familiar, but the meaning is not so clear. In Canadian real
estate there are three broad categories of home ownership.
The words “freehold”, “co-operative” and “condominium” are
the terms used to defi ne an owner’s rights and responsibilities
as they pertain to the dwelling. These types vary in the extent
of the freedom the owner is allowed regarding the decoration
and renovation of the property and rules that restrict certain
behaviours. They can also defi ne who is responsible for the
various maintenance tasks on the premises.
These are the basic points you should know about the types of
home ownership:
Freehold Ownership: The owner owns the house and the
grounds. Freehold homes offer the most privacy and freedom
of choice of any type of home. Homeowners are free to decorate
and renovate as they please. The owner is also responsible
for all the maintenance on the interior and the exterior of the
house. Freehold is the most common type of home ownership.
Condominium Ownership: The homeowner owns the unit
and shares ownership of common elements. Condos are
usually apartment buildings, but also include townhouse
developments and developments of detached buildings on
private roads. The homeowner is responsible for the interior
area of the unit (everything from the plaster in). The condo
association is responsible for the up-keep of the exterior of
the building, common interior elements (halls, elevators and
parking garages, for example) and the grounds. All condo
owners pay a monthly fee to the condominium association to
cover maintenance costs and common utility fees and taxes.
Condos often have strict rules regarding noise, use of common
areas and renovations to units. Condominium residents often
enjoy less privacy than residents of detached homes. Condos
are usually less expensive than freehold houses.
Co-operative Ownership: Co-operatives (or co-ops) are
similar to condos, but instead of owning your unit you own a
share in the entire building or complex. Co-op residents pay for
maintenance and repairs through monthly fees and are subject
to the rules and regulations of the co-op board. If you decide
to sell your shares and move out, the co-op board has the right
to reject your prospective buyer. I will talk about the Bare Land
Strata concept in a future issue ... stay tuned.
Selling Investments
for the Right Reasons
By Justin White
It’s important to understand which investments to own and
when to buy them. But, you should also know when it’s time to
sell an investment and why.
Unfortunately, many people sell investments for the wrong
reasons. Some people want the money to purchase the latest
“hot” investments, even if they aren’t appropriate for their
needs. Others own investments that have lost value, and
people fearing further losses decide to sell, thereby violating
the oldest rule of investing: “Buy low and sell high.” Easy to
say, but hard to do.
These types of behaviours can lead to at least two major
problems. First, if you’re constantly selling investments, you’ll
likely incur fees, commissions and taxes that can erode any
returns you did manage to achieve. And second, by frequently
selling off your investments and buying new ones, you aren’t
following the type of consistent, long-term fi nancial strategy
that’s essential to help you work toward your goals.
If you shouldn’t sell investments to follow the latest trends, fi nd
quick gains or to avoid losses, when should you sell?
You might want to sell ...
If your goals have changed - You bought certain investments
because you thought they would help you make progress
toward your objectives. But over time, your goals may change,
so in response, you may need to sell some investments and
use the money to purchase new ones that are more suitable for
your new goals. For example, early in your career, you might
have benefi ted from owning investments that offered high
potential for growth, but as you near retirement, you may need
to shift some - but certainly not all - of your growth-oriented
vehicles to income-producing ones.
If the investments themselves change - You might have
bought a stock because you liked the company’s products,
business plan or management team. If any of these factors
change signifi cantly, you might need to re-evaluate your
ownership of this investment.
If you need to rebalance your portfolio - You may have
decided that your investment portfolio should be composed of
specifi c percentages of stocks, bonds and “cash” instruments.
But due to changes in the value of your investments, these
percentages can shift somewhat, resulting in a portfolio that no
longer refl ects your goals and risk tolerance. If that happens,
you’ll need to rebalance your holdings, which may require
you to sell some of your investments. Diversifi cation does not
ensure a profi t and does not protect against loss, but it certainly
helps. Make sure your portfolio has healthy diversity and not
all your investments will perform all of the time. Look at the
portfolio as a whole, as well as individual investments when
considering making changes.
If an investment has chronically underperformed -
Sometimes, an investment simply doesn’t perform as well as
you had hoped. When this happens, you may be better off by
selling the investment and using the money to pursue new
opportunities. However, don’t rush to judgment. Before you sell
an underperforming investment, try to determine why it hasn’t
done well. Is it because the market as a whole has slumped? If
so, your investment could rebound when the market does. Or
are there factors unique to this investment that have caused
its problems? If the investment’s fundamentals and prospects
still look good, you might want to simply give it time to prove
its worth.
By knowing when you should hold an investment, and when you
shouldn’t, you can help avoid costly mistakes and improve your
chances for long-term investment success. So, think carefully
before putting up the “For Sale” sign on your investments.
Kaleden Elementary School
One to One Reading Program
with Audrey Perry
It is so hard to believe it is already June! This is the month with
the most daylight and seems to be the month that we are at our
busiest, if we have children in school. There are so many activities
and so many events. It is hard to sit down with a book when
we are so busy, but it helps our minds relax after a crazy day!
So many authors have birthdays in June. Robert Munsch has
a birthday on June 11th. Read one of his wonderful books and
celebrate! This month I have chosen a book by Marie Louise
Gay. Her birthday is June 17th (Don’t forget, it is also National
Flip Flop Day and Eat Your Vegetables Day!). Marie Louise Gay
has written and illustrated a number of books about siblings
Stella and Sam and their relationship. It is a great book to read
together at bedtime, especially under the stars.
Book of the Month:
‘Stella, Princess of the Sky’
By Marie Louise Gay
Everyone needs a big sister like Stella. She
has an answer for any question. Stella
and Sam begin their adventure as the sun
is setting. Stella decides it is a good night
to camp under the stars. The pair observe the sky above
and encounter raccoons, fi refl ies, tree frogs and bats. Sam
wonders if the moon can swim, if the sun wears pajamas or
if he can catch shooting stars with his butterfl y net. Big sister
Stella has all the answers.
The One to One Program will be coming to a close on June
7th. We will be celebrating with a pizza party for our volunteers
and readers. We have had another wonderful year of reading.
Kaleden Elementary is very lucky to have so many dedicated
volunteers who love to read with the children. Thank you all!
Check out the Summer Reading Club at the library in Kaleden
and OK Falls! The theme this year is “Strange … But True?”.
That sounds too fun to miss. Joining the reading club is a great
way to keep up a child’s reading level over the summer months,
as well as keep in touch with some of their friends. See you on
the beach and at the library. Have a wonderful summer.
School Trustee Report for SD67
with Ginny Manning
The preliminary budget for the 2012/13 school year was passed
at a special board meeting on Monday, May 7. The particulars
are as follows:
The district faced a $1.8 million shortfall and to balance the
budget, the district relied on accumulated savings and reserves
of $1 million and further budget reductions of approximately
$0.8 million.
The Board approved the following reductions:
a. Class composition - 2.08 FTE teachers and 4.0 FTE
certifi ed education assistants
b. Helping teachers - 0.351 FTE - works with teachers -
work is complete
c. Autism teacher - 0.4 FTE - works with teachers - work is
complete
d. Reduce school/district supply, equipment and travel
budgets up to 10%
e. Maintenance - $84,000
f. Transportation - $50,000
g. Family life teacher - 0.9 FTE
The Board of Education also approved a separate Learning
Improvement Fund (LIF) provided by the Ministry of Education
of $692,196. The fund provides additional resources
specifi cally targeted to support challenging learning conditions.
The spending plan for the LIF is required to be completed by
October 31, 2012 and will be focused on teachers, support staff
and other resources.
Summerland Secondary Teacher Trevor Knowlton has
developed a national non-profi t organization called ‘STOP
A BULLY’. It is a website that allows any student in Canada
to safely report bullying and cyber bullying to school offi cials
(www.StopABully.ca). Trevor and his partner recently met
with the Senate Committee on Human Rights to discuss the
initiative where there was a great deal of interest. Reports are
forwarded to the principals of the schools involved, so incidents
can be dealt with as quickly as possible.
The Board approved the School Calendar for 2012-13.
Schools will open on September 4. The only new addition to
the calendar is Family Day, which will be either the second or
third Monday in February. The date will be confi rmed when the
legislation has been passed in Victoria.
Kaleden Elementary PAC Update
with Sandy Nickle
Page 17
It’s been a busy month at KES with lots out outings and lots
of activities! Why does it seem that when the school year is
supposed to winding down, everything gets crazy busy?
The biggest event this past month was an event we hosted.
The annual Kaleden Run saw over 400 competitors from
many schools in Penticton and Summerland. KES would like
to send out a HUGE thank you to the Kaleden Volunteer Fire
Department for their time and effort. The KVFD volunteers are
always ready to lend a hand in our community and it is very
much appreciated. Another HUGE thank you goes out to Deb
McGinn for opening up the trail for our runners. This made for
a straighter, safer, and less confusing run for the kids. A HUGE
thank you to all the community and parent volunteers who were
able to pull off an event of this magnitude and pull it off well!
Finally, a HUMUNGOUS thank you to LeeAnn Thompson for
training with our Kaleden runners and for organizing this whole
event! Excellent job everyone!
The division 1 class participated in a trip to the Meadowlark
Festival at Twin Lakes. The class enjoyed a guided two hour
hike and learned about the diverse area in which we live.
The division 3 class paid a visit to the South Okanagan
Rehab Centre for Owls. This was a very educational, hands
on experience. The kids were able to dissect pellets and fi nd
bones from animals that the owls ate, as well as have a close
up look at wings, feathers and skulls. Division 3 also made a
trip to the Safety Village in Penticton and were able to refresh
their bike safety and fi re safety skills.
The Rotary Okanagan International Children’s Festival was
again very much enjoyed by divisions 3, 4, and 5. The kids
went on an extraordinary prehistoric journey with the main
stage performance of “Earth’s Dinosaur Petting Zoo”. The
Australian Theatre Company put on a production that was
incredibly innovative and exciting.
Our Volunteer Tea is being held on Wednesday, June 6th. If
you have helped out our contributed to our school at all this
year, we would love for you to attend. Please RSVP to the
school. Our Year End BBQ will be held on Wednesday, June
13th and the PAC AGM will be held on Tuesday, June 5th at
School District 53 Board Report
with Marieze Tarr, Chairperson SD53
Our district will be applying to the Industry Training Authority
(ITA) to fund our Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA)
program. This year our district has 18 active SSA’s, with two
more being signed up this week. In the past all SSA projects
that met the criteria were funded, but in the future we will be
receiving a re-formatted SSA Project Call for Proposals that is
refl ective of a competitive application process.
Our Assistant Superintendent organized an elementary and a
secondary meeting of teachers and administrators to talk about
the district direction and focus in literacy for next year. These
discussions will inform our district achievement contract and
our literacy initiatives for 2012-2013.
We are very excited to expand our Read/Rhyme and Rec to
SESS this year. This program is a very effective intervention/
intersession reading program for Kindergarten and Primary
students at all schools. This year we will pilot a Grade 5-7
program at SESS.
The BC Liquor Stores Dry Grad Campaign raised $3,116 in the
Okanagan Similkameen for our district’s Dry Grad events.
All of our Grade 10 PE students will be participating in a
Defi brillator Enhancement Program, thanks to a donation of
$7,980 from Interior Savings Credit Union. The schools received
70 CPR mannequins, teacher and student resources and eight
teachers were trained to teach CPR. This year the teachers
will also be teaching their students how to use a defi brillator.
Please check your local schools newsletter if you have a
child entering Kindergarten in the fall, as we have “Welcome
to Kindergarten” programs at all of our elementary schools
during the next 2 weeks. Every student entering Kindergarten
in the fall will receive a ‘book bag” full of books and other
materials parents can use at home to help their child develop
Kindergarten skills. Parents and children will learn all about
the Kindergarten program and the school and meet the teacher
at this event.
Our annual District Elementary Track Meet will be taking place
on Friday, June 1st at SESS.
The Board approved a Field Trip for 37 students from OSS to the
CSI@LSI (UBC Life Sciences Institute). They will be spending
a day at UBC and will be introduced to the fi eld of research
opportunity for our students!
On May 9th a meeting with representatives of Adopt-a-Seat,
South Okanagan Concert Society, Venables Auditorium
Committee, SO Amateur Players, the Town of Oliver, SOSS and
the school district was held to review the plans for the building
of the auditorium (RDOS and Oliver Parks & Recreation were
unable to attend). Robert Hamilton, Theatre Consultant, was
also in attendance to discuss options for the theatre and
equipment requirements. It was confi rmed that the theatre
will seat 400 people and will have a separate drama room for
school use. A meeting will be scheduled for the fall prior to the
distribution of the equipment tender. It is anticipated that the
theatre will be complete in December 2013.
Lastly, our Roots of Empathy program is celebrating six years
of success in our district on May 30th at 4pm in the atrium at
South Okanagan Secondary School. We will celebrate with
this year’s instructors and babies and we are also extending
our invitation to all of our alumni babies.
achievement, and
accomplishment.
June brings longer sunny days, year-end activities, and a
chance to refl ect on our shared moments this school year -
embracing learning opportunities and striving for excellence
in our lives! 2011/2012 has been fi lled with new beginnings
for our Strongstart families, preschoolers, kindergarteners,
students, staff, and myself as a new principal. We have
endured nine months embracing goals, dedicating ourselves
as learners, and focusing on fostering student achievement
for all. OK Falls students have demonstrated success through
academic achievements, fi ne arts and athletic pursuits, and
in areas of leadership. In our fi nal month, let’s focus on our
integrity by honouring our routines, virtues and maximizing our
potential as accomplished socially responsible school citizens.
On behalf of OK Falls Elementary School students and staff,
we wish to send our gratitude to each and everyone of you
who continue to contribute to making OK Falls School the best
we can be! Our school displayed a 25% growth this year and
we invite you to consider us as your ‘school of choice’ for the
2012/2013 school year. Registrations for K-7 are now open,
we offer breakfast programs fi ve days a week, and before/after
school care. Stop by for a personalized tour and/or learn about
the benefi ts of our dynamic community school by visiting our
school website at www.sd53.bc.ca/okfallselem.
Grade 5/6 DARE: Drug & Alcohol Responsibility Education
Graduation Event - Congratulations to Grade 5/6 students
for completing an 11 week DARE program focusing on how
to effectively resist drugs and violence by teaching them the
personal skills, decision-making strategies, and behavioural
techniques to deal with peer pressure and media infl uence.
A special thank you to Offi cer Brenda Kotizan for her efforts
facilitating this valuable social responsibility program. Students
hosted a graduation event on Wednesday, May 9th where
they presented their DARE messages and they received their
coveted certifi cates of program completion.
OK Falls School Garden Planting Spring 2012 - OK Falls
students have been creating a school garden with the help of
Mrs. Stephanie Sundquist. Students planted a variety of bulbs
on the northeast side of the school and created some hanging
baskets to decorate the school entrance. Mr. Travis McIntyre
from Farm to School programs also came and did a workshop
with classes on the importance of eating local foods and gave
students ideas on how to grow their own food at home.
Kids of Steel ® Triathlon Open To All Kids
The fi rst annual “Live Well with Pharmasave Kids of Steel ®
Triathlon” is almost here! The event is set to take place on
June 14th at Kenyon Park from 4:00pm until 6:30pm. The
event, which is being hosted by a group of parents from the
Okanagan Falls Elementary School, will be part of the school’s
year-end celebration. There will be bouncy castles, a climbing
wall, and a dunk tank, as well as pizza for hungry fans. The
event is open to kids outside of the school as well, so everyone
can come down to join the fun.
There will be fi ve separate races, each done by colour-coded
age category. The race is open to kids from 5&U to 13 at all
skill levels (tricycles and training wheels are allowed, as are
life jackets). The children will go out in “waves” of athletes
(meaning that only a few will start at a time), so that children are
not overwhelmed. Both the race course and race atmosphere
are geared to fi rst-time triathletes with no triathlon experience.
The event will not be timed - every fi nish is a win!
To keep the little racers as safe as possible, there will be
lifeguards in the water and the roads will be closed to traffi c.
The group is hoping the community will support the race by
staying off of the roads between the hours of 3pm and 7pm, if at
all possible (the block of Cedar St. to 7th Ave, to Main St., to 8th
Ave, and back to Cedar … basically the block from the beach
to the back lane behind the Flea Market). Spectators are more
than welcome to come down and cheer the event on though!
The group has received generous donations (from Pharmasave,
Sport BC, the Penticton Triathlon Club, and Ironman Canada)
and is excited to be able to host the triathlon free of charge.
Children will receive a race package with a swim cap, race bib,
some special goodies, and will have access to two Aid Stations
on the course, as well as post-race refreshments. Athletes will
also get a gold fi nisher’s medal once they cross the fi nish line.
There will be some big names helping out on race day, including
famed announcer Steve King and professional triathletes Jeff
Symonds and Scott Tremblay.
Check out http://ab.cd/be8 for more information or to register
your child. You may also contact Carrie Ferguson at carrie@
Okanagan Falls Heritage
and Museum Society Update
with Marla Wilson
The May 23rd meeting of the Heritage Society was held in the
Community Room at the school. A good group of members
turned out and many plans and events were discussed. The
Museum, Bassett House and Kenny McLean Room are now
open for touring on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday
from 10am - 3pm. They are catching the eye of visitors and
touring groups, who are starting to visit the structures.
The steps and the ramp at the back of the log house have been
painted, and the picnic tables are getting a bit of freshening up
as well. Arrangements are being made for the lawns to be cut
regularly, as well as some weeding of the fl ower beds. The roof
of the offi ce is being considered for repair.
There will be a Yard Sale in the gardens on Saturday, June 23rd
from 9am - 1pm. Watch for posters. (Phone Marla at 250-497-
6371 for more info.) The Member’s Summer Barbecue will be in
the gardens Sunday, August 12th starting at 3pm. Hamburgers,
trimmings, salads and dessert will be served. The cost is $5 each.
The next meeting of the society will be Wednesday, June 27th
in the Community Room at the school. Hope to see you there!
Okanagan Falls Seniors Activity Centre
with Dianna Stewart
This year is a big milestone for the Okanagan Falls Seniors
Centre. In photo albums of bygone years, we see mention
of April, 1974 when the organization was called the S.C.A.
or Senior Citizens Association of Okanagan Falls. According
to existing articles, the activities the Seniors were involved
in included Park Clean Up, the Ladies Bazaar, and a Senior
Citizens Tea where 110 people attended. All of these activities
and more were held in or around the Legion Hall, which is
where the Seniors held their meetings and programs.
Then came 1986 when construction began on a building to
be called the Senior Citizens’ Drop-In Centre. With Bill Barten
heading construction, many volunteers lent a hand and by
Christmas of that year the massive trusses had been put in
place for the roof. By January 8th, 1987 it was mostly built and
volunteers were doing all the last minute jobs, such as painting
and looking for donations of kitchen equipment and furniture.
When fi nished, the Seniors were proud to relate that with the
help of 2 provincial government lottery grants, a large donation
from the OK Falls Legion, and donations from all over the area
they now owned a building and land worth $160,000.00!
The Offi cial Opening of the Okanagan Falls Seniors Activity
Centre took place on Saturday, April 25th, 1987. And, here
we are today. We are proclaiming June 2012 our "Silver
Anniversary Month"! At our Pancake Breakfast on
Saturday, June 2nd you will be entertained with music
from our house band, The Misfits. At the Annual Barbeque
on Thursday, June 14th, we hope to honour our 'senior'
seniors who were there when the walls went up, as well as
those who have supported the Centre for any or all of the
past 25 years.
If you were there or know people who were, be sure to attend
the events in June and help us celebrate the organization that
has sheltered so many seniors, fostered so many friendships,
and added joy and laughter to our lives.
If you have any questions about our activities, phone
Margaret at 250-497-1172 or Dianna at 250-497-7089.
Breaking News ... the Women’s Institute will not be organizing
“The Annual Community Bazaar” in November. Therefore,
there will be no WI Quilt Raffl e.
A beautiful Banner depicting our Women’s Institute was
made by member Barb Shanks. This Banner will be taken to
Sydney,BC for the FWIC Convention by our members who will
also represent us at the Annual Provincial Meeting on June 10th.
From our minutes of 50 years ago ... “plans were made to cater
a 60th Wedding Anniversary for Mr. & Mrs. Enrique Mallory
(they owned the property where the present day Heritage
Market is located). Repairs were made to the roof of the Hall
being done with the assistance of the Recreation Committee.
The WI Community Hall would be rented as a Polling Station
for the upcoming election and also for the Polio Clinic.”
Citizens on Patrol in Okanagan Falls
Okanagan Falls is a community surrounded with water and with
this brings the many hazards of children playing near or in our
Lakes. In just a split second a child can be in danger, therefore,
there is a need for the children to be supervised continually.
Locally, a near tragedy was averted as the mother having been
trained in CPR was able to use her training that resulted in a
positive outcome. Taking a few short hours to learn basic First
Aid and CPR benefi ts everyone.
The Citizens on Patrol drive our streets as an extra set of
eyes and ears for the RCMP. We look for unsecured doors or
windows, fi res and stolen vehicles, observe large gatherings of
individuals and radio in a report.
To volunteer to become a Citizen on Patrol complete the
application that is approved by the RCMP, receive some in
house training, and followed by a few ride-a-longs. All we ask
is for you to volunteer four hours a month. The efforts put forth
by our group is to make our community a safe place to live and
visit. Phone 250-488-1647 from 10 am to 3 pm daily.
Time To Put Your Affairs In Order
with Lesley Luff of Credible Cremation Services Ltd.
We are all aware that we are not immortal. The time will come
for all of us when we must leave this life. None of us wish to
come face to face with the inevitable. Therefore, it makes good
sense to make some arrangements ahead of time. Otherwise,
those decisions are left to family members, who may fi nd it very
diffi cult to deal with at such an emotional time. So, we urge you
to answer the questions below.
1. Have you made a Will? ....................................... yes or no
2. Have you named an Executor? .......................... yes or no
3. Do you have a Financial Advisor? ...................... yes or no
4. Have you discussed Cremation vs. Burial? ........ yes or no
5. Is your family aware of your wishes? .................. yes or no
6. Have you documented all, such as Vital Statistics, Bank
Accounts, Investments, Life Insurances, RRSP, RRIF, and
all other sources of income? ............................... yes or no
7. Have you pre-arranged Cremation/Burial? ......... yes or no
If you answered ‘yes’ to all the questions above, then you are
to be congratulated for being well prepared. However, if you
feel that it is time to put your affairs in order, please give me
a call and make your pre-arrangements in the comfort of your
own home.
What Really Matters To You?
with Wendy MacKay
Are you living life fully, in the moment, focusing on what
matters? Or, do you tend to worry about all the “what if’s” and
“I should have’s”?
As a life coach supporting women specifi cally to discover more
happiness, I fi nd those who are consistently worrying about
how they look, what others’ think about them, what they should
or shouldn’t do or say, why they think they need to do what
others expect them to do, are less likely to feel happy. They
are actually taking the world’s problems on their shoulders
and that weight is heavy. The ‘could have’ or ‘should have’
thoughts hold us back from experiencing what ‘is’ right now.
Too often we believe we need to ‘fi x’ everything, instead of
accept, appreciate and allow it to just ‘be’.
Anytime you feel the need to change or fi x things, stop and
ask yourself, “is this my problem”? On a scale of 1-10, how
important is this for me to change? If you decide it’s really
important, do you need to change it right now or could you
schedule it for later? Sometimes when you set things aside
and come back to it later you have another perspective.
Learning to let go, setting things aside and continuing to focus
on the task at hand releases the feeling of being overwhelmed.
Delegating chores and/or handing back responsibility to others,
gives you time to accomplish what you need to. It also sends
the message that you don’t need to ‘fi x’ all the problems and it
also lets other people learn to accomplish their own tasks and
learn responsibility as well.
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stressed and tired, set
aside some time to determine why. Ask yourself what can you
get help with or simply let go of. If you want to feel happy
often, consider how you treat yourself. Don’t blame, criticize
or complain, because ultimately it’s your problem. Discover
better solutions that allow you time for yourself. What really
matters? You do. You matter, so choose empowering action
that inspires you to live your dreams. Yesterday has come and
gone, today is all that matters.
