Holly White’s practice is built around her life. An example being in her exhibition
with Megan Rooney currently at Arcadia Missa, where she used one of our car
parking spaces to build an allotment.
When I asked if she wanted anything in the gallery to tell people about this (so they
could go and view it as a part of the exhibition), she said no – as it wasn’t really a
part of it. She didn’t want it be a conceptual art piece, it is just an allotment; she
had the space and opportunity to make the allotment, so she did.
The above slide, is a photograph of Holly and Megan by the allotment, the photo
frame and image were made by Holly and installed within one of her sculptures,
which has been placed by the allotment, and re-photgraphed.
She made work out of it – images and updates online of the success of the
vegetables’ growth, the allotment as a site for documentation of the collaboration
with Megan Rooney for the exhibition.
But, just as Amalia’s selfies aren’t the work itself, these moments in holly’s life, this
labour, is all material to respond to and make her sculpture and video works about.
