Breast Reduction: The lighter side of life
Nicolas Parkhouse has worked as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Nuffield
Health Haywards Heath Hospital since 1994, where he has been performing
breast reductions for 20 years. Patients benefit from his extensive skill,
experience and dedicated continuity of care. Patients also have access to top
class physiotherapists who can aid their recovery and rehabilitation.
Breast reduction is a well-established procedure with a high success rate
and low complication rate. It reduces the encumbrance and discomfort of
excessively heavy breasts.
During the operation, a pre-planned area of breast tissue is excised and
the nipples lifted to a normal position. The wounds are sutured with buried
absorbable stitches and a light adhesive tape dressing applied. Patients are
given an elasticated support for the first two weeks and then a sports bra
is worn for a further six weeks. There is usually a one to two night hospital
stay. Post-op appointments are scheduled as part of the treatment plan and
advice is given regarding scar management to achieve the optimum result.
Patients can also benefit from physiotherapy where a series of exercises
will be prescribed to help improve posture. Most women will resume driving
within a week to 10 days and, on average, will be back at work within three
weeks.
