Spring is in the air at Jersey Women’s Refuge
A flurry of spring-cleaning has been taking place at the Jersey Women’s Refuge over the last
couple of weekends.
Volunteers brandishing paintbrushes, brooms and a trowel or two have spent two days
tidying, gardening and painting to give the area at the back of the Refuge a spruce up for
spring.
The project was undertaken by a total of 17 volunteers, 13 of whom are staff members from
the Human Resources Department at RBC Wealth Management. Their efforts have been
boosted by a grant from the company and by donations of goods from a number of Island
companies.
Rosa Le Mains, who led the RBC Wealth Management team, said: ‘We have been
overwhelmed by the help and support we have received for this project. We approached a
number of local businesses and were just inundated with supplies. We also received a lot of
help from our Facilities Team.
‘It has been a lovely project to work on and it has been really good to see people doing nice
things for one another. We are genuinely delighted that what started as two days of voluntary
work became a much wider community project.’
Businesses and organisations including, Normans, St Peter’s Garden Centre, Romerils,
Andersons, Transport and Technical Services and the Parish of St Helier donated items
which have helped improve the outdoor area at the Refuge.
The Manager of the Jersey Women’s Refuge, Lorna Kearney, said: ‘After the winter months
and with all our staff being so busy helping the women at the Refuge, the outside areas
were very much in need of some TLC.
‘I am over the moon that a team from RBC Wealth Management was so willing to volunteer
their time, over two weekends, to help with this project. I would like to say a very big thank

you to all at RBC from everyone at the Refuge and it could not have happened at a better
time with the Royal Visit happening on 3rd May.'
To support the work done by its staff, RBC Wealth Management agreed to award the
company’s Day of Service Grant to the project. The funds will be used to employ a
professional decorator to finish some of the more complicated jobs, including painting a
climbing frame, on the site.
Paul Patterson, Global Head of Trust at RBC Wealth Management, said that members of staff
who volunteer their time for at least four hours during a month could apply for the Day of
Service Grant for their chosen charity. ‘RBC Wealth Management encourages community
participation in all its locations and the grant is a great way for the company to support the
efforts of its staff and the community. This project at the Jersey Women’s Refuge is a
wonderful example of the voluntary work that our staff do and we are all really proud of them.’
