rapidly gaining in 

popularity. It is currently 

played in seven states and 

territories and Australia 

has competed at the 

Sydney Oympics, the 

Youth Olympic Games in 

Singapore and in many 

senior world 

championships. 

“This development 

tour is a key part of the 

AHF’s (Australian 

Handball Federation) 

ongoing strategy for 

athletes like myself now 

and for gaining Olympic 

representation for 

Australia in the future,” 

Carter said before leaving 

for Europe. 

Carter’s tour was selffunded 

and in the weeks 

leading up to it, he raised 

almost $1,000 towards his 

costs. 

In early May, Greg 

Donnelly, Labor MLC 

and local resident, placed 

a Question on Notice in 

the Legislative Council 

requesting information 

about the number of 

demountable classrooms 

in public primary 

schools, high schools and 

TAFE Colleges within 

the Hornsby electorate. 

He was ‘gobsmacked’ to 

find that Cherrybrook 

Technology High School 

has a total of 37 such 

classrooms onsite. 

“I almost fell off my 

chair when I saw this 

figure. Demountable 

classrooms do have a role 

in accommodating 

students in certain 

circumstances, but 37 at 

one school. It is like 

having a demountable 

school within a school,” 

Mr. Donnelly said on June 

18. 

A school parent with 

whom we spoke, broadly 

confirmed Mr. Donnelly’s 

assertion, 

“I can’t say exactly 

how many but there’s a 

‘sh..load’,” he said. “It 

isn’t fair to the kids but 

what do you expect when 

nothing is being spent on

incompetence, bias or an 

intention to deceive?

Yes, it’s on again this year

KidsGames – the best kid thing on earth 

Each year many excited children meet at 

Thornleigh Community Baptist Church for a 

week long holiday club based on sport, games 

and the creative arts. 

The sports activities are held at Headen Park – 

weather permitting. 

KidsGames are held in over 150 countries 

throughout the world! And this holiday club has 

an added ‘compassion’ dimension – the children 

are encouraged to bring in small items to help fill 

shoe boxes – these shoe boxes are then 

distributed by Operation Christmas Child to 

needy children in many countries. 

Our local KidsGames will be held from 

9th – 13th July from 9.00am – 12.30pm daily. 

A number of local churches combine to run the 

club where children from Year 1 to Year 6 have 

lots of fun playing games, improving their skills in 

soccer and other sports or being involved in 

creative activities, as well as a Bible Discovery 

time with stories, drama and small group 

activities.

It’s easy to pull the wool 

over the eyes of a 

community who do not 

regularly grapple with 

decibels. The government 

buys time by masking the 

permanent and 

predictable damage 

inherent in their plans – 

relying on us not to ‘wake 

up’ figuratively until we 

are repeatedly woken up 

physically, with the 

damage already 

irrevocable. 

The ethical crux of the 

matter is plain: we’ve 

been systematically 

deceived. Worse, we 

leave the deception 

unchallenged. 

Plainly, the ‘public 

consultation’ sessions – 

which skim over damage 

to health, well-being and 

the environment – are a 

well-orchestrated sham.

Transport for NSW, under 

pressure, identified their 

short-sighted proposal as 

predestined, with a 

definite start date. We’re 

being duped and run over 

roughshod. 

Our residents are not 

selfish, as Mr Koutchavlis 

claims. We actively 

support the proposed 

NWRL, for example. We 

did, however, thoughtfully 

and successfully campaign 

against the profoundly 

disfiguring ‘above-ground’ 

option that was the 

government’s first 

incompetent plan. 

Residents were heard 

because they had 

responsibly informed 

themselves about its ugly 

foreseeable consequences. 

There’s a known 

solution, too, to the 

government’s freight 

problems – though there’s 

no lazy ‘quick fix’. The 

excellent solution is the 

Western Option – 

officially recommended 

for an early start by the 

late Mahla Pearlman. An 

impatient freight industry 

cannot brutally trample 

health rights and quality 

of life, to the detriment 

of communities who’ve 

scrupulously respected 

their environment for a 

century. The 

government’s clumsy 

proposal to retrofit a 

Third Rail trivializes the 

permanent physiological 

stress and sleep disruption 

that will result. 

More importantly – for 

the sake of the whole 

State – the government 

must live up to its

of Councils (NSROC) 

supported by way of a 16 

page A4 coloured booklet 

and 36 page ‘Supporting 

Research Update by 

PricewaterhouseCoopers’ 

based on the Hon Mahla 

Pearlam AO’s 2007 

review of the 2004 SKM 

study, recommends two, 

two lane tunnels to 

connect the F3 and M2 at 

West Pennant Hills. 

Both the SKM and 

Pearlman reports found 

that regardless of the 

tunnels a western 

connection of the M7 to 

the F3 near Somersby 

should be completed by 

2121. 

This NSROC report did 

not disclose that if the 

tunnels were to be built, 

the F3 and Hawkesbury 

bridges would have to be 

widened, speed limits 

reduced and Pennant Hills 

Road widened to six lanes 

to James Ruse Drive. 

Why waste money and 

increase traffic delays on 

Pennant Hills Road 

whilst the NSROC 

proposal is carried out 

when a far better, quicker 

and cheaper option exists 

that would also cause 

minimal traffic 

disruption?

In response to Mr 

Koutchavlis’ letter in last 

month’s Chronicle, I also 

had hoped that the 

proposed dedicated 

freight rail track would 

give relief from the 

number of trucks on 

Pennant Hills Road. 

On enquiry at a meeting 

with Mr Justin Maguire, 

Principal Manager Freight 

and Regulation at 

Transport for New South 

Wales, Mr Maguire stated 

that both road and rail 

freight will increase 

incrementally by 1.5% 

annually, along the 

north/south route. Trains 

mainly convey containers 

and trucks carry goods 

directly to their required 

destination. 

We’d all love a magic 

bullet to relieve Pennant 

Hills Road, but this isn’t 

it! 

The main thrust of the 

petition referred to, was in 

fact to ask for the removal 

of the exemption for 

freight-related noise 

pollution, either by rail or 

road, within N.S.W... The 

track through Pennant 

Hills Station is flat and 

straight...not a good 

position to observe this 

problem. Whereas on the 

track winding up the 

steep incline from Epping 

all the way to Pennant 

Hills, the noise pollution 

can be unbearable.

There could not have 

been a more auspicious 

date for release of the 

news in May about 

Australia’s involvement in 

the Square Kilometre 

Array (SKA). The 

decision must surely rate 

as the most important 

event of this year, a 

landmark in history that 

will be remembered long 

after all other recent 

news stories are 

forgotten. 

The proposal envisages 

the biggest and most 

advanced instrument in 

radio astronomy, a 

technological leap of 

hundreds of years. It is 

the culmination of a new 

branch of science that 

started right here, in 

what is known among 

overseas scientists as 

Hornsby Valley. 

In the late 1940’s, the 

(then) CSIR set up nine 

radio astronomy stations 

around Sydney, including 

one at Hornsby Valley 

from 1948 to 1955. 

One of the many 

pioneering projects here 

was the 1946 Moonbounce 

experiment, when 

radio emissions directed 

at the moon from 

Shepparton were received 

in Hornsby Valley and 

provided an accurate 

measurement of the 

distance from Earth to the 

Moon. 

In 1952, the 

International Union of 

Radio Science Congress 

was held in Hornsby 

Valley, the world’s 

birthplace of radio 

astronomy. 

The historic radio 

astronomy array was lost 

in a bushfire that swept 

up the valley. 

And what about the 

date of last month’s news? 

Because Monday 28th 

May 2012 marked one 

hundred years after a key 

member of that team of 

explorers, Ruby Payne- 

Scott, was born in 

Grafton. 

The third woman to 

graduate in physics at 

Sydney University, and the 

world’s second radio 

astronomer, Ruby Payne- 

Scott was a pioneer of 

RADAR and radio 

astronomy, described by 

another leading physicist 

as: “One of the best 

physicists that Australia 

has ever produced.” 

The story about our 

local hero was detailed in 

the book by Claire 

Hooker: Women in 

Australian Science, 

published by Melbourne 

University Press, ISBN 0 

522 85107 and sold in 

ABC shops.

Pennant Hills 

So the NSW 

Government is to spend 

$170m on nine commuter 

parking projects but not 

including Pennant Hills. 

The selection criteria is 

not known but if it is 

based on the availability 

of State Rail land we 

know that they have 

different plans for 

Pennant Hills. The 

proposed new rail freight 

rail track on the western 

side of the station will 

mean substantial 

construction works, a 

narrowing of Yarrara 

Road, significantly 

impacted commuter 

accessibility, the loss of all 

the significant tree growth 

and the station one of the 

best features of the 

Pennant Hills centre 

being lost. 

Interestingly Hornsby 

Council in its new LEP 

work were proposing the 

rezoning of the Pennant 

Hills Hotel site to permit 

the development of a 

public car park. This idea 

was subsequently 

retracted with Council’s 

Business Papers reporting 

that “provision of public 

carparking within the 

Centre would be reviewed 

as part of the Pennant 

Hills Masterplan.” 

In its 2009 Housing 

Strategy, Council 

concluded that the 

Pennant Hills centre 

required detailed 

masterplanning because 

“known traffic problems” 

were a severe limitation or 

prohibition to increased 

residential density, but in 

2010 they back-flipped 

and approved 5 storey 

residential development 

in Fisher Avenue/Trebor 

Road immediately 

adjacent to the Pennant 

Hills centre. Now in 2012 

Council appears to be 

suggesting that commuter 

traffic and parking is 

adding to the “known 

traffic problems” in and 

around the centre.

NSW State Governments

The project, initiated by 

the SAN has been made 

possible by funding 

through the Commonwealth’s 

Health Workforce

Ministry of Health and the 

alliance of The University 

of Sydney and Avondale

workforce shortages, and 

provide unique side by 

side training of doctors,

Beecroft residents 

acked Hornsby Council

June 7 for a determination 

by the Joint Regional 

Planning Panel (JRPP) of a 

proposed 51 unit 

affordable housing 

development for seniors 

proposed by Uniting Care 

Ageing on property 

abutting Hannah Street 

and Copeland Road, 

Beecroft (behind the 

existing Uniting Church 

on Beecroft Road). 

While allowing that there 

is a need for affordable 

housing for seniors within 

the local area, residents 

supported by Local MP 

Greg Smith, objected to the 

development on many 

grounds, the over arching 

argument being the 

development’s failure to 

pass ‘The Character Test’. 

It was stridently argued 

that the placing of five 

storey buildings on this 

site would destroy the 

existing character of this 

heritage precinct which 

contains a number of fine 

Federation homes. 

The proposed 

development had 

previously been refused by 

Hornsby Shire Council and

criticisms claiming little of 

the housing stock 

surrounding the site was of 

worthy heritage 

significance and that 

plantings would eventually 

soften views of the 

development.

A 63 year old 

Thornleigh man and his 

wife walked across 

Pennant Hills Road from 

The Commenarra 

Parkway at about 1.50pm 

on Sunday, June 3. They 

were followed by a male 

in his early 20’s, slim to 

medium build, 6 feet tall, 

dark eyes, clean shaven, 

olive skinned, possibly 

European and wearing a 

light grey ‘hoodie’ with 

dark pants. 

The couple stopped to 

look at the caryard on the 

corner and at this point 

an argument arose with 

the young male suspect 

spitting towards the man’s 

face and throwing 4-5 

In his conclusion, David 

Clark said, 

“The Trust is not 

opposed to an appropriate 

higher density than 

currently exists on this site 

but at a scale which can be 

accommodated within the 

surrounding location. The 

present proposal is 

completely out of scale.”

decided to defer its decision 

on the development for one 

month giving the applicant 

an opportunity to submit 

amended plans to address

BUDGETS - 

AN UNDERRATED BUSINESS TOOL

No doubt many of you 

have heard stories of 

organisations preparing 

budgets. Many of these 

stories relate to unrealistic 

budgets being forced onto 

various managers or 

organisations of which 

they have no hope of 

meeting. This type of 

story gives a bad name to 

what is actually an 

important management 

tool. 

The use of a properly 

calculated and constructed 

budget is a great 

management tool to guide a 

manager to both improve 

income and expense 

control. Further, the 

budget is a realistic target 

for the manager or business 

owner to try and achieve. 

The fact that a budget is 

not met, that is a problem. 

The budget can show that 

an expectation generated 

earlier in the financial year 

has not been achieved. 

As an example, the 

budget could be set on the 

basis that the business sold 

a specific number of units 

of a product during a 

specific month of the year. 

If the budget expectation is 

not met then the business 

operator can examine why 

something that was 

thought to occur did not 

occur. The reason why 

something did or did not 

occur is the important fact.

ongoing basis to ensure 

that in our budget situation 

in sales will continue?

creativity of 

Normanhurst Pianist, 

Music Teacher and 

Composer Natalia 

(Natasha) Ivanovsky – 

Perkins throughout her 

life. 

For over 30 years, 

Natasha who holds both 

performance and teaching 

qualifications from Trinity 

College London (ATCL 

and LTCL), has taught 

piano in the Normanhurst 

area. Among her students 

have been her daughters, 

Christina (Brown) and 

Devi (Marmak), both of 

whom attended 

Normanhurst Public 

School and Hornsby Girls’ 

High School and both of 

whom have established 

their own teaching careers 

in Piano and Dance. 

Natasha was born in 

Shanghai of Russian 

parents. After a year in 

Hong Kong, the family 

migrated to Australia in 

1958. Later Natasha, who 

commenced her Music 

studies in China, lived in 

USA where she studied 

under Vecheslav 

Leonidovich Ordynsky 

and with the pianist 

composer, Peter Coraggio. 

On her return to Sydney, 

she studied with Isador

need to be prepared and 

adopted by the Minister

Review of Environmental 

Factors (REF) or an 

Environmental Impact 

Statement (EIS) to assess 

the impacts on flora and 

fauna including: land 

modification; sowing and 

maintenance of exotic turf; 

increased water and 

nutrients; weed plumes; 

further clearing for 

infrastructure; sewage 

treatment; lighting upon 

nocturnal animals; 

improvements to the 

access road; provision of 

parking and the impact of 

increased traffic on 

neighbouring streets. 

Similarly an EIS or REF 

would need to be carried 

out regarding a Mountain 

Bike Track. 

Council’s report states 

that the process outlined 

here would typically take 

around 18 months to 

complete. The report also 

estimates the cost of 

developing the land as a 

sportsground (including 

lighting and amenities) to 

be approximately $2 – 3 

million plus a further 

$200,000 - $500,000 for 

an on-site system to 

capture and re-use water 

and a possible further $1 

million for upgrades to 

the site access road and 

parking. 

Clr. McMurdo moved 

that the Council again 

write to local MPs and the 

Minister advising them 

that whilst Council 

recognises a shortage of 

playing fields in the 

Pennant Hills/ 

Cherrybrook area, Council 

does not support the 

creation of a sports ground 

at the former Pony Club 

site at Stringybark Ridge, 

or anywhere else in the 

Berowra Valley Regional 

Park, due to impacts on 

surrounding high quality 

bushland. Instead, Council 

supports the creation of 

sports grounds only on 

degraded lands. The letter, 

she said, should also 

request the State Members 

to advise Sydney Water to

Berowra Valley National 

Park and the management 

process that will follow,”

age of 10, she had 

completed 8th Grade 

Piano. At 12, she had 

achieved her Performer’s 

Certificate and started 

giving piano lessons. At 

14 she gained her ATCL. 

Devi who was born in 

San Francisco also holds 

the ATCL (Performer) and 

LTCL (Teacher). Both she 

and her sister teach piano 

in the Blue Mountains but 

Devi also teaches Dance 

and this takes her all over 

the world presenting 

workshops. She 

introduced Tribal Belly 

Dancing (a fusion of 

Spanish, Gypsy and 

Ballet) to Australia from 

America and she has 

featured in numerous 

DVDs. 

The highest Award 

given by Trinity College is 

its Exhibition prize. It is a 

rare distinction awarded 

to students who receive 

the highest marks in the 

Mayor Berman said. 

“It is essential that the 

community is fully 

involved in the preparation 

of the plans to manage the 

site to ensure the new 

National Park achieves its 

full potential in meeting 

the needs of Hornsby 

Shire’s diverse community. 

“Hornsby Shire residents 

will welcome the Minister’s 

commitment to an open, 

transparent and fully 

informed process.”

AMF Hornsby’s new 

Centre Manager is Dion 

Alexander, an Australian 

representative tenpin 

bowler and a young man 

who is passionately 

committed to the sport 

and the development of 

younger players. 

Dion, who only recently 

moved to Sydney from 

Adelaide, has been 

bowling for 14 years – 

since the age of ten. In that 

time he has won four 

National Junior and Youth 

titles and has been a state 

representative player on 12 

occasions. In 2011, he 

represented Australia at 

the Asian Adult 

Championships. 

“I bowled my first 

perfect 300 game at the 

Australian Junior National 

Championships at the old 

AMF Bankstown Bowling 

Centre when I was 14,” 

Dion said. He now has 

five career 300 games to 

his credit. 

Dion’s enthusiasm for 

his sport is infectious and

possible on a completely 

blank hard disc - this 

would not be the case 

with the final version. The 

desktop looks similar to 

the recent Windows 7 BUT 

where is the Start button 

that we are all very 

familiar with and many 

rely on for most functions. 

It is hidden down in the 

bottom left corner and

pops into view when you 

point down there. It is not 

the usual list of recent 

programs, etc. but a rather 

garish screen with large 

rectangles of colour each 

with a function/ program 

listed. Not a pleasant 

sight! Shutdown is now

at the bottom right 

corner. They don’t like 

you turning off this 

version of windows. 

With only a couple of 

days of playing, it is early 

days yet and as has been 

suggested on feedback 

sites, when Windows 95 

came out many people 

complained about the 

radical change to the user 

interface. We shall see. 

Other comments decry 

the apparent emphasis on 

an interface that is 

designed for tablets/ 

phones and this means 

that this operating system 

may work well there but 

not on a desktop/laptop 

machine...to be continued. 

Be careful when taking 

as gospel an opinion on 

any of the media relating 

to computers hardware 

and software. The 

speaker/writer may not 

fess up but they are often 

paid to have a positive 

opinion.

KEEPING YOUR FAMILY IN THE PICTURE By John Bell 

It seems there are many more health issues to consider 

than there are weeks in the year; so it's probably no 

surprise that some days and weeks have to be shared 

around. For instance the recent World No Tobacco Day 

fell squarely in the middle of Macular Degeneration 

Awareness Week. 

Nevertheless, these two events are a very comfortable 

fit; because smokers and people who have smoked are 

three times more likely to develop macular 

degeneration. 

Macular degeneration (MD) – sometimes known as 

age-related macular degeneration (AMD) because of its 

high prevalence in older people – is the name given to a 

group of diseases of the retina which cause 

progressive, painless loss of central vision. Thus the 

ability to see fine detail, drive, read and recognise faces 

is slowly but surely lost. It's the leading cause of 

irreversible blindness in Australia and other Western 

countries. 

Presently there is no cure for AMD; and treatments to 

delay or stop its progression have met with limited 

success; so there is increasing interest in identifying risk 

factors which, when modified, may reduce the chance 

of getting AMD, or stop the condition becoming worse 

when it does occur. 

A family history of macular degeneration gives us a 50% 

chance of developing the disease - as a consequence 

the theme this year for Macular Degeneration Week was 

"keep your family in the picture". We can’t do too much 

to change our parents, so if one or both of your parents 

has or had AMD, a regular and frequent check up by 

your optometrist or eye specialist is important for early 

diagnosis and the best available treatment. 

On the other hand, prevention strategies are essential. 

Something we can address is a commitment to become 

a non-smoker. Many studies have clearly demonstrated 

the link between smoking and AMD. Also, there is 

ongoing debate about the relationship between AMD 

and obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol 

levels; but research certainly suggests that diet is 

significant. 

In particular the likelihood is that the pigments betacarotene, 

lutein and zeaxanthin found in carrots, 

pumpkin, corn and some green leafy vegetables are 

beneficial. Other antioxidants of interest include vitamins 

A and E and the trace elements zinc and selenium. 

Proprietary preparations containing these substances 

are now available, but the use of anti-oxidants in high 

doses are not without risk. Beta-carotene has been 

found to increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers; 

and vitamin E has been associated with an increased 

risk of heart failure in people with diabetes or disease 

affecting circulation. Check with your pharmacist before 

you choose a specific product. 

On the other hand, there is evidence that fish oil 

(containing so-called omega-3 fatty acids) might provide 

protection against AMD. So, the Macular Degeneration 

Foundation advises eating fish two or three times a 

week, eating dark-green leafy vegetables and fresh 

fruit, eating a handful of nuts once a week and 

protecting your eyes from sunlight exposure; and of 

course, if you’re a smoker, then quit! You can get more

Epping Station, Pennant 

Hills Station and 

Normanhurst Station, as 

part of the $148 million 

Transport Access Program 

as of direct benefit to local 

rail commuters. 

“At Karonga School, 

$893,000 is allocated to 

complete a $3.2 million 

project to build new 

classrooms,” he said. 

“Road improvements 

costing $16 million will 

accelerate the delivery of 

up to 4,000 new 

properties for Epping 

Town Centre. Upgrades to 

the intersection of 

Carlingford and Beecroft 

Roads; Epping and Essex 

Roads; and Epping and 

Blaxland Roads will 

address existing 

congestion issues and 

provide capacity for 

growth. 

“The Budget includes a 

$30 million boost to our 

Local Government 

Infrastructure Renewal 

Scheme, which helps 

councils with the cost of

infrastructure backlogs. 

Parramatta City Council 

was one of the 69 councils

When Should I have my 

Children’s Eyes Tested? 

Children may suffer from a variety of different eye 

conditions and diseases. Among the more common 

conditions are: 

• Focussing problems (refractive errors)- shortsightedness 

(myopia) longsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism 

(oval shaped corneas) and anisometropia (unequal focus 

between right and left eye) 

• Eye muscle problems - including squint (strabismus), 

convergence weakness, inaccurate tracking movements, 

nystagmus etc 

• Amblyopia (Lazy eye) - reduced vision in one or both 

eyes, often unrelated to eye disease. This is often caused 

by strong refractive errors or significant anisometropia. 

It is also a common side effect of strabismus. 

There are also a number of less common conditions 

including: 

• Eyelid and orbital diseases • Corneal diseases • 

Cataracts • Retinal diseases including blood vessel 

diseases • Neurological diseases with vision side effects 

• Ocular tumours or cancers • Iris and pupil 

abnormalities • Eye diseases secondary to systemic 

(general health) disease 

Some of these conditions will be congenital and some will 

develop during the early years of a child’s life. 

Some will be cosmetically obvious to parents, but some 

will be subtle conditions which will only be diagnosed 

accurately during a professional eye examination. 

Often an early diagnosis makes a big difference to the 

success in treatment of a disease or abnormality. 

We would recommend that children have their eyes tested 

at the following times: 

• at any time you are suspicious that your child may have 

a vision problem, strabismus or any kind of eye disease 

• early in life, as a baby, possibly by a paediatric 

ophthalmologist 

• prior to starting school, around age 4 years 

• every two to three years, as they go through their 

schooling 

• more frequently if problems or symptoms develop. 

This is especially important if there is a family history of 

eye problems, as many of these conditions have a genetic 

component.

that many of the people 

living at the end of the 

path, where it leaves the 

bush in Thornleigh, may 

not have heard of - or seen 

- their avian neighbours 

either. And yet there they 

are, just into the bush: vey 

common and, with just a 

little effort, easy to observe. 

With a pair of binoculars

beautiful specimen 

blooms will be on display 

and members of the NSW 

Camellia Research Society 

will be on hand to help 

with information about 

camellias and their culture, 

and with brochures and 

booklets on camellias.

dazzling reds and yellows - 

you’ll be glad you did.

As I write this in mid 

June, I’ve just returned 

from taking two ‘backto-back’ 

tours for Ross 

Garden Tours. First 

was 3 weeks in China 

exploring that 

fascinating country 

and visiting the 

incredible Peony Festival in Luoyang – a first for 

Ross Tours and an unbelievable experience. A 

few days at home and then it was the France tour 

– great gardens, food and glorious countryside! It’s 

good to be back for a while though! 

So…what to do in the garden though these rather 

dreary winter days: 

• Ornamental weeping maples are bare of leaves

and it is a great opportunity to look at the 

structure of the plant – a little trim here and there 

might be necessary to create that perfect shape. 

• Similarly, many deciduous trees and shrubs can 

be inspected closely for borer damage and given a 

trim to shape. Collect all the fallen leaves and 

either compost them or lay on garden beds as 

mulch. 

• Check out your local garden centre for different 

coloured varieties of Hellebore – the Winter Rose 

and one of my favourite perennials. These are 

ideally suited to growing beneath those weeping 

maples I was talking about and they are very easy 

to grow – plant and forget (apart from obvious 

watering etc!) 

• My Lots a Lemon is hanging heavy with masses 

of fruit. It grows in a large terracotta pot and I 

feed it regularly through the warm months with 

Yates Dynamic Lifter for Citrus and alternate 

with Manutec Fruit and Citrus Food. 

Remember that this is a Meyer Lemon variety, so 

once the fruit is picked it won’t keep as long as 

the common old thick skinned Eureka Lemon. 

The fruit keep better on the bush until you need 

them – but not for too long. Make up some 

preserved lemons, which is so easy to do or 

concentrated lemon juice cordial. 

• I know last month I wrote about all the fruit 

and veggies to plant. Do it now! These are: 

Potatoes, Strawberries, Rhubarb, Asparagus and in 

the flower garden get those Lilium corms planted 

as soon as possible as they can dry out in the 

packaging. 

• And now to the world’s most popular flower – 

the Rose! It’s pruning time at the end of the 

month. Firstly…don’t fret about it. It’s easy and 

remember that Roses are very forgiving plants and 

can cope with any sort of pruning! 

• So….arm yourself with a pair of sharp secateurs 

and loppers or saw for thicker stems. Also diluted 

lime sulphur spray. And of course some protective 

gloves! 

• Cut out all weak twiggy growth to the base, 

remove old stems and retain 3-4 stronger and 

younger stems. Cut these back to about 30-50cms 

from the ground depending on the age of the 

plant. If possible cut on an angle above an 

outward facing bud. Discard all the old stems and 

leaves on the ground. Spray the entire plant and 

ground with lime sulphur. Mulch with cow 

manure. This is ample nutrition for the time 

being. Proper feeding will begin in spring. You’re 

done – well done!
