PUBLIC EXHIBITION Hornsby West Side Precinct Planning Proposal There are many dreams for the heart of Hornsby, now is the chance to share yours Council is exhibiting a Planning Proposal which applies to the commercial precinct along the Pacific Highway from Coronation Street in the north to the RSL club in the south. The Planning Proposal refers to the precinct as the Hornsby West Side. Council wants to transform the run down appearance and “old town centre” feel of the West Side into the “Heart of Hornsby”, a desirable place to live, work and visit. The objectives are to increase residential and employment development opportunities, revitalise and preserve the heritage character of the area, and to reinforce the role and status of Hornsby Town Centre as a Major Centre. The Planning Proposal can be viewed on Council’s website hornsby.nsw.gov.au/onexhibition, at Council’s libraries, or at the Administration Centre, 296 Pacific Highway, Hornsby during business hours. CALL FOR ENTRIES Hornsby Shire Council is inviting community groups to register events ents for the 2014 Healthy Living Festival. It’s a great opportunity for Community groups to promote their Healthy Lifestyle activities available to the community. The festival, will take place between March 16 and April 13 2014. There will be four categories that the events will be promoted under: Fitness and exercise Health and wellbeing Education Social activities The online application form to register your event for the Healthy Living Festival will be available on Councils web site from 1 October to 25 November 2013. Events registered will be included in the Healthy Living Booklet that is widely distributed throughout the Shire. It’sbeenavery exciting time and I would like to share some of the highlights with you. The Hornsby Aquatic Centre is on schedule for completion next year. This is the biggest construction project to date undertaken by Council. Completion of Stage One of Hornsby Mountain Bike Trail. Located in Old Mans Valley, this has become a very popular venue for riders. Draft concept for Hornsby Station Footbridge has been developed. Recent community consultation indicated strong support for a new footbridge. We are now in discussion with State Government regarding funding. Community consultation for Hornsby West Side has commenced. Council has developed a Planning Proposal which we are hoping will lead to the revitalisation of this precinct. Sewerage service has been connected to Cowan. The next phase of this project will be connection for Galston. Council has reached a settlement with all parties concerning its challenge over the valuation of Hornsby Quarry. The settlement will see Council paid $6 million. We were also awarded arded $3 million from earlier legal proceedings, bringing the total compensation to $9 million. This brings all legal proceedings to a close. We can now move forward with the planning of the rehabilitation ation of the site. I am very pleased with these achievements. We have tackled some big projects which bring tremendous benefits to the community. At this time I w ould also like to thank Councillor R obert Browne for his service over the past year as Deputy Mayor and my fellow Councillors. I look forward to updating you on our progress. STUNNING NEW CLUBHOUSE Deputy Mayor Elaine alicki is delighted that u-ring-gai Council has een able to deliver such a striking new facility that ill benefit over 1,000 soccer players. A State Significant nfrastructure (SSI) pplication report has been repared in line with NSW lanning requirements hich describes the roposed project and dentifies the potential nvironmental issues to be ssessed. “This is one of the largest nfrastructure projects in SW and significant effort s being put into ensuring mpacts are minimised, hould the project roceed,” Mr Kean said. In 2012 Transurban and he Westlink M7 hareholders approached the NSW Government with an unsolicited proposal to design, build, operate, maintain and finance a motorway linking the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga with the Hills M2 at West Pennant Hills. The NSW Government has committed $405 million for the project, with matching funding from the Federal Government. Nationals’ Federal Leader and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Warren Truss has confirmed the newly elected Coalition would honour that commitment. Roads Minister Duncan Gay said a lot has happened on F3-M2 project in the past few months with a request for tender being issued to a shortlist of three consortia for the design and construction of the project. “The tenderers have been asked to develop the design, systems and services based on NAME CAVE Readers may recall Bob Piper’s story in November last year regarding the ‘Name Cave’ which existed before the Comenarra Parkway was built and a subsequent story in January this year when Bob and his wife returned to find the cave. Mrs. Gloria Campbell (nee Doust) of Thornleigh was going over past issues and rang regarding the cave which she recalls vividly from her childhood in Bellevue Street, Thornleigh. Now, in her early 90’s Mrs. Campbell told of how she and her brother took billycans and wandered down the dirt track that was then known as Fox Valley Road to gather blackberries and buy eggs roof system made from a material that acts as the ceiling, roof and insulation all in one integrated part. “This cheap and effective solution was quick and easy to install, reduced the amount of construction waste and helped us to deliver the project ahead of schedule. “What I really love most about this project is that it is a true community partnership. “Ku-ring-gai Council point of being put out to tender but with zero communication with the communities most affected. Mr Kean said the project would deliver a high standard motorway which integrates with the regional transport network and would remove a high volume of heavy vehicles from Pennant Hills Road. from Mr. Butterfield’s farm (now Butterfield Street). Mrs. Campbell believed the cave was destroyed when the Comenarra was constructed in the early 1950’s. Whether what Bob Piper found in January is a remnant of the cave from earlier times we can’t tell you but Mrs. Campbell is hoping to pay a visit and find out. The proposed new system favours the building industry, traps you with planning decisions in which you are not able to participate, stops you from participating in local development decisions where you are most affected, and denies you equal rights of appeal with developers. The new system has attracted strong criticism from bodies such as the ICAC, the Law Society, the Heritage Council, construction to begin next year on the new St Ives Village Green youth precinct, which will include a skate and bike park, youth performance space, basketball half court and expanded children’s playground. This will be at the site of the old St Ives Girl Guides and Scout Halls, which will be demolished,” Clr. Malicki said. “St Ives football club is extremely grateful to Kuring-gai Council for the new clubhouse and we are really excited about the opportunities it will provide for us in the coming years,” said Penny Howell, St Ives Football Club President.
