A LONG WAIT FOR
LITTLE By Bill Aitken
An 82 year old single
ady who for the purpose
f this story we shall call
enni has been living in a
ousing NSW complex in
ormanhurst since 1991.
While Jenni survives on
n aged pension she is
emarkable in that up until
ecently she was working
s a volunteer five days a
eek for organisations
uch as Meals on Wheels,
hatswood; for Pink
adies at the local
ospital; as an exercise
rainer for elderly nursing
ome clients and for a
umber of activities run by
ocal churches.
She has curtailed some
f her work due to health
ssues but still volunteers
ne or two days a week.
he has undergone several
perations for major health
roblems including her
rthritis which gives her
evere pain in her fingers,
nees and back.
Jenni is Chinese by birth
nd has no immediate
amily in Sydney. While
he speaks passable
nglish, she has difficulty
riting and may, at times,
e difficult to understand.
ince 2005, with help from
friend in her Parish and a
ocial worker at Hornsby
ospital she has been
riting to Housing NSW
egarding essential repairs
o her unit.
The unit is damp and
he uses a dehumidifier
onstantly to reduce the
ampness. The dampness
auses a build up of
oisture in her cupboards
and bedroom. A number of
the kitchen cupboards
have warped and their
hinges have rusted. There
are cracked tiles in the
bathroom and laundry
where the cupboards are
also damp affected. Added
to this was her fear of been
electrocuted due to
cracked power points in
the damp environment.
In March 2006 she was
promised new carpet after
a toilet in the unit above
flooded her unit. At that
time an inspection by
Housing NSW noted that
the other matters which
she raised were in need of
urgent repair.
Time went by and in
January 2008 neither the
carpet replacement nor the
repairs had been done. She
wrote again in January
2008 and in June 2009.
When still nothing
happened, she wrote again.
In April 2010 a
maintenance man working
in the complex looked at
her kitchen and said “This
is not my job. Someone
will come after two days to
fix it.” Two men did come
a week later, measured the
cupboard doors and said
they would be back in a
fortnight. When they failed
to return, she wrote again
on October 30 (six months
later).
By now a large part of
the meagre surplus from
her pension was and is
going on medications,
dehumidifiers and
insecticides to fight the
onslaught of bugs,
cockroaches and rats that
have invaded her.
She believed that part
of the dampness problem
came from an
overflowing gutter at her
back door causing
seepage into her unit
because of soil build up.
She also had issues with
pollen from two mature
trees planted by a
previous tenant. The
Department did rectify
both these problems after
she wrote again in
October 2011 and
September 2012 and her
carpet was replaced
earlier this year.
She has contacted the
office of her local MP,
Barry O’Farrell and we
were informed that the
office has received a
report from Housing
NSW.
Jenni has given up
contacting Housing
NSW by phone as she
has spent hours over the
years listening to
recorded music. We can
vouch for this.
After numerous
attempts to contact her
complex’s Manager we
finally got through only
to be told, “we are
looking into the matters”
and that he was not
permitted to speak to the
media.
When asked to speak
to the media officer we
were transferred to a
‘request for repairs line’
and more recorded
music!
It is appalling to think
FUN ON A FERRIS WHEEL
These littlies had a fabulous ride on the Ferris Wheel at
Hornsby’s Bushland Festival held on Sunday, September 15
– loads of stalls, attractions, music and mayhem and, of
course, crowds of people filled Fagan Park at Galston for a
great day out.
that anyone should be
ignored, duck shoved and
given the run around in
this manner and more so
when this lady has given
so much to her
community and fellow
human beings.
STOP PRESS
Persistence pays off: on
deadline we learnt from
Mr. O’Farrell’s office that
the Team Leader and staff
of Housing NSW were
planning an on-site
meeting with Jenni.
NEW VILLAGES
ON DISPLAY
2 — Monthly Chronicle, September 2013
Hon Philip Ruddock MP
Pennant Hills
Sir,
Thank you to Monthly
Chronicle and all the
stamp savers in the
community for your
generous donations of
used stamps.
Since the article last
November LIONS
International Stamp Club,
with contributions from
the Lions Club of Hornsby
and others, has collected
many kilograms of used
stamps which raised over
$4600 for the Australian
Lions Children’s Mobility
Foundation, helping
children to walk with the
aid of devices including
the Hart Walker. Our hope
is to exceed that figure this
year.Please continue the
good work.
Cut the stamps leaving
just less than 1cm all
round and drop them off
at Collins & Thompson
Encourage friends,
relatives and businesses to
save every stamp. Remind
the Post Office please not
to sellotape stamps to
parcels as this makes them
unusable. Helping children
to walk is what this is all
about.
in the world with over
1.35 members in 208
Hornsby, and
surrounding areas, is a
great place to live and
serve. Sincere thanks.
Ted Heneberry
Hornsby
Sir,
I would like to thank
the voters in the seat of
Berowra for their civility
and courtesy towards me
and my campaign team
during the recent Federal
Election.
To say that Labor is not
the flavour of the month in
this electorate is an
understatement and yet, to
date, almost 15000 electors
voted for me as their first
preference on 7th
September and I am very
grateful to them for their
support.
I also wish to
acknowledge the courtesy
of the other six candidates
in this electorate. We were
all very civil to each other
whenever we crossed
paths. In all of the
community forums we
attended, we put forward
our policies and our plans
for Berowra and did not
attack each other. This was
a welcome departure from
some of the behaviours of
those seeking office in
other electorates.
I congratulate Philip
Ruddock for his victory
and wish him well. I also
congratulate the Monthly
Chronicle for your fair
treatment of the election.
Your profiling of all the
local candidates during
the campaign was incisive
and unbiased.
Well done everyone.
18-year-old Henry Kwan
leapt from a balcony in
Sydney despite the frantic
attempts of his mother and
sister to restrain him after
he took a synthetic drug.
His hallucinations made
him want to fly - literally.
In several other states such
as Queensland and South
Australia, numerous
deaths have been reported
due to synthetic drugs.
Henry’s family would have
done anything to save him
and want to protect other
families from experiencing
the same tragic loss due to
drugs. Education is a key
tool to back law
enforcement and can be
done by all parents in the
Synthetic drug dealers
are no different to those
peddling heroin or
cocaine – they make a
fortune at the expense of
lives. They don’t care
about the human cost –
for them it is just a
business enterprise.
Critics might say that
banning drugs doesn’t
work, but already statistics
have shown that the
interim bans on synthetic
drugs have produced
positive results in
protecting the health of
young people. NSW
Minister for Mental Health
announced that since June
Between 7pm on
Monday, September 9 and
10am the following
linked to synthetic drugs
from 75 per month to 39
in July. Newcastle police
reported a drop in
incidents of severe
behavioural disturbance
from 26 per month to just
two per month.
While you cannot ever
stop people from taking
chemicals to alter their
mental state for fun,
banning them absolutely
lessens the amount of
people who have access to
them. It absolutely does
help. Who wants their
Despite assurances from
the ETTT Alliance that
only tree lopping would
that over 20 trees were
understanding from the
community meetings held
with the Alliance that
boxes would be provided
to house displaced flora
and fauna.
“In one 60 year old tree
not to mention possums
and all else. About 12-14,
60 year old gum trees were
cut down not lopped as
promised,” a resident said.
“We lodged a complaint
Central Avenue at
unimpressed when told
by Council officers that
there were no funds
available to rectify
drainage problems which
caused significant and
dangerous flooding in
their building’s basement
parking area in January
2012.
Drainage from Duffy
Avenue through to
Railway Parade carries an
enormous volume of
water through a 45cm
(18inch) diameter pipe
installed by the Rail
Authority on its land.
After development
took place in 1991,
Council installed another
45cm drainage pipe
adjacent to the railway
land. The problem is that
while neither of these
pipes is adequate in a
major downpour, both of
these pipes converge into
a 30cm (12 inch) pipe
which in heavy rain
simply can’t cope.
William Mills, Principal
of Price Financial
Intelligence, (one of the
strata owners), explained
that the waters from the
2012 occurrence came
within millimetres of the
building’s electrical room
and generator plant.
A retention pit behind
be lifted with a crane –
this was blown off by the
force of the floodwaters.
“Our strata members
were so concerned for the
to check for injured
wildlife and displaced
nests.
“Why has this work
been undertaken during
nesting seasons? Where
are all the boxes for the
possums and birds that
were promised? Why has
the ETTT stated quite
clearly that there would
only be tree looping not
tree felling in their flyer to
residents (and on the
ETTT website)?
This is a clear breach of
the law. The ETTT and
tree service must be held
to account. Hornsby
Council needs to look
into this and prosecute.
Were the ETTT and
representatives on site?
the 24 hour telephone line
PURSUIT!
Around 5.40pm on
Friday September, 6
Police noticed a car in
Lane Cove as it turned
from a set of traffic lights
against the road markings.
On Ryde Road, West
Pymble police activated
emergency lights to stop
and talk to the driver. The
Many of us think about
being in business for
ourselves. Some trades or
professions lead naturally
and easily into opening a
business. Carpenters,
plumbers, hairdressers
and solicitors spring
readily to mind. Other
sorts of work may not
easily lead to a business.
All businesses take time
to set up and develop a
group of customers or
clients. One question to
answer may be: do you
buy an operating business
and thus have an
immediate flow of income?
This could be compared to
using the money for the
FINDING SPACE
FOR BURIALS
The NSW Government
has now completed stage
two of its landmark
cemeteries and crematoria
reforms with the release
of draft legislation. The
Department of Primary
Industries announced an
Exposure Draft of the
Cemeteries and
Crematoria Bill 2013 on
September 2 and this was
available for public input
until September 20.
The new legislation will
regulate cemetery and
crematorium operations
across all three sectors of
the interment industry. Its
primary purpose is to
ensure there is sufficient
land to meet current and
future burial needs in
NSW and that people
continue to have equitable
access to cemetery and
crematoria services.
“The Bill will introduce
consistent governance and
regulation of cemeteries
and crematoria to ensure
they maintain satisfactory
levels of accountability,
transparency and
integrity,” a departmental
representative said.
“The Bill provides a
sound framework for
long-term planning and
management of cemeteries
and crematoria on Crown,
local government and
private land. A new
agency, Cemeteries and
Crematoria NSW, will
provide strategic oversight
of the interment industry.
The agency will be led by
an independent Board,
which will have functions
and powers enabling it to
work with all sectors of
the industry to find
a red traffic light.
STARTING OR BUYING A BUSINESS
purchase of the business to
live on while you develop
your customer base.
Before going into a
business, everybody
should thoroughly
investigate their chosen
business. Some businesses
require the investment of
large amounts of capital
and other businesses
require smaller amounts of
capital but may place at
risk your private home if
something goes wrong.
Look at other operators
in your chosen industry
and identify what is
working and not working
for those businesses.
Bring all your
solutions to the issue of
diminishing cemetery
space.
“The Board will develop
strong linkages with the
NSW planning system and
establish benchmarks for
cemetery space. The Board
will also be responsible for
ensuring that the burial
needs of all religious and
cultural communities are
respected and protected,”
the representative added.
The legislation
provides for the
introduction of optional
renewable tenure burial
for new graves.
Renewable tenure burial
will not be retrospective
or operate where it
conflicts with cultural
practice, and perpetual
tenure burial will
continue to be available.
A comprehensive
consultation program on
the draft Bill has been
conducted and all key
stakeholders with an
interest in the area of
cemetery reform have
been consulted. All sectors
of the industry were given
the opportunity to
comment on the content
of the legislation and the
input of major religious,
cultural and community
groups, relevant state
government agencies and
local government
representatives has been
sought throughout the
drafting process.
The consultation
program is now complete
and the Bill will be
finalised for introduction
“He doesn’t give up,”
says Gordon’s brother
Frank, who is among those
watching.
“He’s a fighter. He has
shown a lot of courage and
he still is.” As an example
of Gordon’s indomitable
spirit, Frank tells the story
of how he restored the
Macquarie Princess. “It
was built in 1915 and by
1983 when Gordon bought
the boat it was pretty
much done for and had
been abandoned in Port
Macquarie. Gordon was a
carpenter and said, ‘I know
nothing about boats but I
know everything about
timber.’ He set to work and
by the end the Maritime
Services Board was
bringing trainees up here
to learn from what he was
doing.”
story.
“I’ve known Gordon for
a long time and he used to
come to Council with
various issues he wanted
help with. If we couldn’t
help him, we had to look
out,” he says, laughing.
Another guest on the
boat is Miriam Dixon,
CEO of Parkinson’s NSW.
“This is the first time
I’ve ever been involved in
something like this. It’s
magical,” she says.
“Gordon is obviously a
very special man to be able
to put this together. The
fact he is helping us raise
awareness of Parkinson’s is
fantastic.”
That awareness, along
with the support it creates,
is desperately needed.
There are 80,000
people in Australia with
Parkinson’s, with 30 new
cases diagnosed every day.
The campaign against the
illness is dependent on
donations, as government
support is sorely lacking.
“There are 26,000
people with Parkinson’s in
New South Wales, yet we
receive just $24,000 a year
from the New South Wales
Government and less from
the Federal Government,”
Miriam says. “That’s less
than one dollar per person
and there’s not much we
can do with it.”
The difficulties of those
with Parkinson’s are
compounded by how little
is known about the
disease. There isn’t even a
test and its presence can
only be officially
confirmed during a postmortem.
“It’s a very
complex and unusual
illness,” Miriam says,
outlining the four
symptoms to watch out
for: trembling, stiffness of
movement, slowness of
movement and problems
with balance. “There is a
perception in the
community that this is an
illness affecting only older
people, but that’s not the
case. Of those who get it
20 percent are of working
age and 10 percent are
under 40.”
Norma Herdman is one
of the nurses on the
frontline who care for
Gordon and others with
Parkinson’s.
“It needs greater
awareness and the families
need more support,” she
says. “It’s hard on the
patients, of course, but it’s
also very hard on the
families to watch this
happen to their loved
one.”
ROTESTS STALL DECISION ON PLANNING LAWS
Over past weeks, The
Better Planning Network
(BPN) has taken to the
streets to protest the
proposed changes to NSW
Planning Laws.
These protests along
with more than 5,000
submissions received in
response to the White
Paper and draft planning
laws led to the
announcement on
September 19 that the
Government will delay
introduction of the new
laws.
Prior to the
announcement, BPN
commissioned an
independent analysis of
randomly selected
submissions from the
Department of Planning
website to look at the key
issues and trends that
emerged from the
stakeholder consultation
on the Planning Bills. This
move was made after
Minister Hazzard claimed
that while the Government
was continuing to consider
submissions, ‘a lot of the
groups don’t agree with
each other.’
“This analysis found
remarkable consistency
on a number of key issues
from stakeholders across
the spectrum,” BPN’s
Corinne Fisher said.
“Eight stakeholder
groups were identified –
Local Government,
individuals,
community/special interest
community groups,
professionals, industry,
property sector and
government organisations.
The randomly selected
submissions came from
across the State.
“There was broad
consensus and concern
about the following aspects
of the White Paper and
Planning Bills: Undue
emphasis on economic
growth with no
commitment to the
principles of Ecologically
Sustainable Development;
Inconsistency between the
Government’s intentions as
expressed in the White
Paper and what is actually
proposed in the Bill;
Removal of the
community’s right to
stage, including removing
the right of people to be
notified about a
development before it is
approved; Community
engagement at the high
level strategic stage is
difficult, expensive and
BORING MACHINES
ARE COMING
Hornsby State Liberal
P Matt Kean has
elcomed the
overnment’s
nnouncement that work
as started on building
he four tunnel boring
achines that will deliver
win tunnels for the $8.3
illion North West Rail.
Mr Kean said the news
ill be music to the ears
f Galston, Dural and
herrybrook residents
ho have been waiting
ecades to have their own
ail line.
“The North West Rail
ink is the biggest public
ransport infrastructure
roject in Sydney since the
arbour Bridge almost a
entury ago,” Mr Kean
aid.
“The first tunnel boring
machine will be in the
ground next year and the
three others will follow
soon after.
“This is an important
development in this
exciting project and it will
give the community
confidence the North West
Rail Link will be delivered
by the NSW Coalition
Government.
“The North West Rail
Link forms a key part of
our record infrastructure
commitment, which also
includes the South West
Rail Link, WestConnex
and the F3-M2 Orbital
Link,” Mr Kean said.
The four tunnel boring
machines (TBMs) are part
of the $1.15 billion
tunnelling contract for the
North West Rail Link,
which was awarded in late
June to Thiess John
Holland Dragados.
The joint venture has
contracted top-tier
manufacturer NFM
Technologies in Lyon,
France, to design, build
and deliver the four
machines which will cut
the 15km tunnels between
Bella Vista and Epping –
Australia’s longest rail
tunnels.
“This is highlyspecialised
equipment
which will be tailor-made
for North West Sydney by
a world-leader in
tunnelling which has built
more than 100 other
tunnelling machines for
similar international
infrastructure projects,”
Mr. Kean said.
NEW FREE LEGAL SERVICE
Rohit Ralli and his partner
have established a free legal
advice service for all
Australians locally
If this sounds too good
to be true, read on. Two
Wahroonga neighbours,
one a lawyer, the other
ith vast experience in
promoting Australian
usinesses and products
throughout Asia and
internationally shared
their concerns about the
increasing costs of legal
advice in Australia.
This spurred them on to
launching a charity which
offers free legal advice to all
Australians.
The pair have purchased
an office in Waitara to
house their Call Centre
and founder and General
Manager (Volunteer), Mr
Rohit Ralli explained the
service:
“The Youth Enterprise
Legal Service (YELC) is a
not-for-profit charity which
is run by volunteer
Paralegals. YELC offers free
legal advice over the
telephone on almost all
topics.
We do not Means or
Merits test and there is no
limit on the number of
issues a caller has, nor is
there is a long registering
and approval process. One
simply calls 02-8078 5215,
or, logs on to
www.yelc.com.au to get
started,” he said.
The service has received
support from Member for
Ku-ring-gai and Premier,
Barry O’ Farrell MP and
Member for Bradfield, Paul
Fletcher MP both of whom
have offered to circulate
details of the service
through their networks.
“I’ve informed Clr Elaine
Malicki of the services, she
has congratulated me on
our efforts, and, I now hope
to perhaps get the Council
to help us promote our
cause.
“Our neighbours and
friends are helping us
promote the service on the
North Shore via their
Church groups, Bridge
Clubs etc. Chief Inspector
Mr. Josh Maxwell from the
South West Metro Region
(who helped me launch
EyeWatch a year ago in
Wahroonga) has graciously
offered to assist me in
formulating my Social
Media strategy as he feels
this is a worthwhile cause
given it provides such an
invaluable service to the
Community.
“We are 100% reliant on
the goodwill of the
community to help
promote our cause as we
party rights to access
judicial review of
decisions.
“If you add ICAC’s
warning that the Bills
contain a high risk of
corruption, it is obvious
that this is just bad
legislation,” Ms. Fisher
said
“Minister Hazzard’s
decision to delay
introduction of the
legislation is a testament to
the powerful community
campaign opposing the
new laws and the carefully
considered intervention by
local government,” said
The TBM parts are
expected to be shipped to
Port Botany while the huge
cutter heads are planned to
be shipped separately to
either the Port of
Newcastle or Port Kembla,
where they will be
transported to Sydney on
the back of a heavy lift
semi-trailer as a wide load.
Mr Kean said the four
TBMs will use about 400
times as much power as
an average house and
between them will use
29km of conveyor belts to
remove the crushed rock
from deep underground –
the distance from the
Sydney CBD to
Blacktown.
“We will be keeping the
community fully informed
about future developments
as we move ahead,” Mr
Kean said.
“Residents will soon be
able to catch a glimpse of
the remarkable machines
which will turn the North
West Rail Link into a
reality.”
have no funding for
Marketing, all our funds
have been used towards the
office, furnishings etc.
“YELC does not have a
Bank account; we are not
subsidised, or, sustained
by third parties; we do not
take donations, we are
100% self funded. There is
no financial gain or tax
relief in it for us. This is a
true charity and a free
service for all Australians,”
Rohit said.
“In today’s complex and
litigious lifestyle we all have
questions pertaining to
contracts, neighbours,
liability, business etc. and
simply find it too
cumbersome or too
expensive to call a lawyer
or the Ombudsmen. YELC
can be considered as your
100% free Legal butler on
call,” he concluded.
CEO of the Nature
Conservation Council,
Pepe Clarke
“It’s clear that the public
has legitimate concerns
about the impacts of the
proposed laws on their
rights, their local
environment and their way
of life,” added Jeff Angel,
Hornsby West Side Precinct Planning Proposal
There are many dreams for the heart of Hornsby,
now is the chance to share yours
Council is exhibiting a Planning Proposal which
applies to the commercial precinct along the Pacific
Highway from Coronation Street in the north to the
RSL club in the south. The Planning Proposal refers
to the precinct as the Hornsby West Side.
Council wants to transform the run down
appearance and “old town centre” feel of the West
Side into the “Heart of Hornsby”,
a desirable place
to live, work and visit. The objectives are to increase
residential and employment development
opportunities, revitalise and preserve the heritage
character of the area, and to reinforce the role and
status of Hornsby Town Centre as a Major Centre.
The Planning Proposal can be viewed on Council’s
website hornsby.nsw.gov.au/onexhibition, at
Council’s libraries, or at the Administration Centre,
I have now been Mayor for
12 months. It’sbeenavery exciting
time and I would like to share some
of the highlights with you.
The Hornsby Aquatic Centre is
on schedule for completion
next year. This is the biggest construction
project to date undertaken by Council.
Completion of Stage One of Hornsby
Mountain Bike Trail. Located in Old Mans
Valley, this has become a very popular venue
for riders.
Draft concept for Hornsby Station Footbridge
has been developed. Recent community
consultation indicated strong support for
a new footbridge. We are now in discussion
with State Government regarding funding.
Community consultation for Hornsby West
Side has commenced. Council has
developed a Planning Proposal which
we are hoping will lead to the revitalisation
of this precinct.
Sewerage service has been connected
to Cowan. The next phase of this project
will be connection for Galston.
Council has reached a settlement with all
parties concerning its challenge over the
valuation of Hornsby Quarry. The settlement
will see Council paid $6 million. We were
also awarded arded $3 million from earlier legal
proceedings, bringing the total
compensation to $9 million. This brings all
legal proceedings to a close. We can now
move forward with the planning of the
rehabilitation ation of the site.
I am very pleased with these achievements.
We have tackled some big projects which bring
tremendous benefits to the community. At this
time I w ould also like to thank Councillor R obert
Browne for his service over the past year as
Deputy Mayor and my fellow Councillors.
I look forward to updating you on our progress.
last year regarding the
‘Name Cave’ which existed
before the Comenarra
Parkway was built and a
subsequent story in January
this year when Bob and his
wife returned to find the
cave.
Mrs. Gloria Campbell (nee
Doust) of Thornleigh was
going over past issues and
rang regarding the cave which
she recalls vividly from her
childhood in Bellevue Street,
Thornleigh.
Now, in her early 90’s Mrs.
Campbell told of how she and
her brother took billycans and
wandered down the dirt track
that was then known as Fox
Valley Road to gather
blackberries and buy eggs
roof system made from a
material that acts as the
ceiling, roof and insulation
all in one integrated part.
“This cheap and effective
solution was quick and
easy to install, reduced the
amount of construction
waste and helped us to
deliver the project ahead of
schedule.
“What I really love most
about this project is that it
is a true community
partnership.
“Ku-ring-gai Council
point of being put out to
tender but with zero
communication with the
communities most
affected.
But Minister Hazzard’s
New Planning System for
NSW, in terms of the
community’s awareness
and participation, is the
most critical at this time.
The Trust distributed a
Newsletter on this subject
in June aimed at alerting
the community to the
NSW Government’s plans
and objectives that break
Premier O’Farrell’s election
promise to return planning
performance requirements
and must come in under
$2.65 billion,” Minister
Gay said.
“The tenderers must also
ensure the design
minimises and mitigates
any potential
environmental impact. “
Final tenders are due at
the end of November and
once they have been
received the design will be
used in the Environmental
Impact Statement which
will go on public display
in early 2014.
If approved, the
proposed link will be
jointly funded by
Transurban, Westlink M7
shareholders, the NSW
Government and Federal
Government and would
include tolls.
Mr Kean said the project
would deliver a high
standard motorway which
integrates with the regional
transport network and
would remove a high
volume of heavy vehicles
from Pennant Hills Road.
from Mr. Butterfield’s farm
(now Butterfield Street).
Mrs. Campbell believed the
cave was destroyed when the
Comenarra was constructed in
the early 1950’s. Whether what
Bob Piper found in January is
a remnant of the cave from
earlier times we can’t tell you
but Mrs. Campbell is hoping to
pay a visit and find out.
From that to this - the new Clubhouse
and the one it replaces.
contributed over $400,000
and managed the project.
We also received a
$150,000 grant from the
NSW Government’s
Community Building
Partnership.
“St Ives Football Club
kicked in an extra $10,000
to upgrade the kitchen and
will be contributing
another $30,000 to
$40,000 for the fit-out
including shelving, a
trophy cabinet and a large
screen television to be used
as a coaching tool and for
social movie nights.
“The club also
generously put in $30,000
to upgrade their former
clubhouse, which will be
the new home of the St
Ives Girl Guides.
“This paves the way for
powers to the people. The
proposed new system
favours the building
industry, traps you with
planning decisions in
which you are not able to
participate, stops you from
participating in local
development decisions
where you are most
affected, and denies you
equal rights of appeal with
developers. We pointed
you to websites for further
information and to ease
objection submissions.
The new system has
attracted strong criticism
from bodies such as the
ICAC, the Law Society, the
Heritage Council,
construction to begin next
year on the new St Ives
Village Green youth
precinct, which will
include a skate and bike
park, youth performance
space, basketball half court
and expanded children’s
playground. This will be at
the site of the old St Ives
Girl Guides and Scout
Halls, which will be
demolished,” Clr. Malicki
said.
“St Ives football club is
extremely grateful to Kuring-gai
Council for the
new clubhouse and we are
really excited about the
opportunities it will
provide for us in the
Principal: William Mills
It is a fact that most women retire with substantially less
savings than men, even if they don’t have children or care
for elderly parents and stay in full time work.
Research has found that woman in commerce without
children were earning about 91% of the superannuation of
men of the same age, earning the same average wage.
The uncomfortable facts are that women earn less than men
and spend more time out of the workforce caring for children
and elderly parents. All these factors ensure women will
retire with less money than men.
What is the answer, women must learn to take control of
their retirement savings and ensure they close this gap!
How can we help you to correct this issue?
We can show you how to use salary sacrifice, transition to
retirement strategy, co-contributions, member contributions
and spouse contributions to secure your retirement.
We are financial advisers and accountants and we
put our client’s interests first. We will give you a one
hour free consultation to help you to understand how
you can grow your superannuation with strategies
that make a real difference.
Before now, learning
times tables was a drag.
Repetitive. Boring.
Now NumberWorks’n
Words has brought to life
a new character, Steve
Storm, to change all that.
For kids, playing Steve
Storm and the Tables of
Doom is engaging,
stimulating, fun! It doesn’t
feel like learning at all. So
while they can only
succeed in the game by
mastering their times
tables, the practice they
get while playing, is the
opposite of the tedious
drills of the past.
For parents, it’s a way of
ensuring their children are
getting the best
educational outcomes
with the most enthusiasm
and the least hassle.
Year 12, 2013 – St. Leo’s College, Wahroonga
“We are a friendly and
welcoming group,”
organiser Denise Cameron
said.
“We offer planned
activities to stimulate play
and development – through
We all know how
important it is for
children to learn their
times tables. Future
maths skills build on this
knowledge and without it
children will struggle
later on as they progress
to algebra and more
complicated maths.
The difficulty often lies
with persuading children
to do the practice. They
would rather be
entertained than faced
with tedious schoolwork.
This is where Steve Storm
comes in. Children are
engaged on an educational
level without it seeming
like homework.
You can be assured this
fantastic game will help
your child learn their
multiplication tables.
future.
I also thank you for your
many and varied
contributions to our
College which have made a
very positive difference to
our local and wider
community over the past
six years.
women of conscience.
modelling with dough, craft
activities, using
construction materials,
kicking and throwing balls.
“The aim is to encourage
young children to develop a
love of books and share
ideas through book time,
singing and music time.”
The group gives children
the opportunity to learn to
socialise with other children
through play and for those
children who have English
as a second language (ESL)
the chance to learn English
through interacting with
other children.
The group also enables
BE CARE AWARE – CARERS WEEK OCTOBER 13-19
SUPPORTING CARERS
Caring for a loved one
an be rewarding, but
ometimes may become
tressful and exhausting.
aring can affect the
arer’s mental, physical
nd emotional health. For
his reason, it is important
or carers to recognise
heir own health and
ellbeing needs.
The Northern Sydney
Carer Support Service
(NSCCS) provides
information, education and
advice to carers to assist
them in their caring role.
The service also provides
intensive carer support for
complex situations.
Carer education and
monthly carer support
groups run throughout the
year. Topics include:
managing dementia and
difficult behaviour,
medication management,
grief and loss. A men’s
cooking support group is
held regularly to teach
cooking skills to male
carers.
NSCCS also provides a
range of useful resources
and publications and
Carer Support officers
ocus on culturally and
inguistically diverse
CALD) communities and
oung carers.
CALD communities are
often identified as ‘hidden
carers’ who do not
recognise themselves as
carers, for example, they
ay be family members
with a caring role due to
their family expectations.
These carers may have
difficulty accessing services
due to cultural and
language barriers.
In terms of young
carers, when a family
member becomes sick,
frail or incapacitated in
some way, the effects
ripple out to the whole
family, including children.
Managing strong feelings
of loss, grief, guilt and
resentment about the
effects of an illness can
sometimes complicate
family roles and
functioning.
Many children try to
help by becoming carers or
reducing their own level of
need.
MIA stands for Make It
Awesome and the purpose
of the MIA Club is to
support the resilience of
young people and their
families (children 0-18
years), where someone in
the family has a chronic
illness, disability, mental
health problem or
substance abuse issues.
During Carer Week MIA,
along with the Rotary Club
of Chatswood and
Willoughby Council, will
host a Young Carers Fun
Day at the Chatswood Strike
Bowling and Laser Skirmish
Centre on Saturday,
October 12. Young carers
aged 10-15 living in the
northern region are invited
to attend.
On Wednesday October
9 a free workshop titled
Who Takes Care of the Carer
presented by Petra King
(founder and CEO of
Quest for Life Foundation)
will be held from 9:30am
until 3:30pm at the School
of Philosophy, Fox Valley
Road/Corner Pacific
Highway, Wahroonga.
This program will offer
advice and how to accept
the full range of emotions
you might experience
during the course of your
role as carer and how to
manage these emotions. It
will also encourage you to
look after your own health
and wellbeing so you have
the energy to look after
others and it will offer
suggestions on maintaining
hope, humour and
optimism as much, and as
often, as possible to
support your key strengths
and to utilise support and
resources around you
reminding you that you
don’t have to do it alone!
The workshop is free but
a small donation of $5.00
would be appreciated to
cover catering.
On October 16, a special
Carers Forum and lunch
will be held from 10am
until 12noon at the
Dougherty Community
Centre, 7 Victor Street,
Chatswood.
An eight week Cognitive
Behavioural Therapy
(CBT) group therapy
program for carers of
children with special needs
will be held at Hillview
Community Health
Building (Room 19), 1334
Pacific Highway,
Turramurra from 10am
until 11.30am on
Wednesdays, commencing
on Wednesday, October 16.
Australasian Podiatry
encourage all of us to
Diabetes affects over
1,000,000 Australians
and foot complications
are the second leading
cause of death relating to
diabetes. Australia has 18
amputations per 100,000
people double the rate of
the UK and the second
worst in the developed
Each amputation costs
TALKING TEETH
With Bradley Russ
BDS (Hons) SYDNEY
Gum disease, tooth loss
and Dental Implants
Over the past two months I have looked at adult
gum diseases, their prevention and management.
Unfortunately, we often see people too late and
teeth are already beyond treatment. A common
request is to replace the lost teeth with dental
implants, but dental implants have a much
higher failure rate in people with a history of
untreated gum disease.
Additionally, it is much more difficult to treat
infection around implants than around teeth –
dental implants have a roughened, threaded
surface which bacterial plaque will readily
adhere to. The only effective way to clean the
contaminated surface once bone has been lost
is to approach the implant via a minor surgical
procedure.
Once again, the best management is prevention:
Before the implants are placed, any gum disease
is treated and the teeth returned to optimal
health;
During implant treatment, home care is
assessed and modified as required and the
remaining teeth are periodically cleaned;
After implant treatment, the implants and
remaining teeth are regularly checked and
cleaned, usually on a 3 to 6 monthly basis,
Therefore, dental implants are suitable for people
with a history of gum disease, but only if disease
is eliminated prior to treatment and there
is good prevention thereafter.
BE CARE AWARE – CARERS WEEK OCTOBER 13-19
LIVE THE LIFESTYLE
YOU DESERVE
For many of us,
leaning the gutters and
vacuuming are just two of
many household chores
which are boring and
require a lot of effort,
particularly when you
reach a certain age.
But just because you
would like help with a few
chores doesn’t mean you
should have to sacrifice an
independent lifestyle.
The good news is,
there’s a solution which
offers the best of both
worlds - Serviced
Apartment living.
At Lutanda Manor in
Pennant Hills, Sales
Manager Vicki Taylor is
seeing unprecedented
emand for this lifestyle.
“Serviced Apartments
eally work for people
Matt Kean MP
MEMBER FOR HORNSBY
Keen to Help you by
who want to continue
living independently but
need, or would like, a little
help with daily tasks,” said
Mrs Taylor.
“People who live in
Serviced Apartments
simply choose to have
help with a few everyday
jobs – it’s distinctly
different to nursing homes
or aged care facilities.”
Instead of living in a
house that’s often too big
and unmanageable,
Serviced Apartments
provide residents with a
home that suits their
needs. The resident will
benefit from a range of inhouse
services such as
cleaning, cooking,
maintenance and laundry.
This means that
everything is designed to
• Representing you in the NSW Parliament
• Assisting you to access State services
• Communicating your issues to the relevant Ministers
• Organising Justice of the Peace applications
• Recognising State achievements
make your life easier and
you’ll have more time to
to do
What’s more, the
properties at Lutanda
Manor are now free of
Stamp Duty – so it’s a
great time to buy.
“I’ve worked at Lutanda
Manor for many years and
it’s safe to say demand for
our Serviced Apartments
and villas has never been
so high,” said Mrs Taylor.
“I believe this speaks to
the quality, style, location
and service which we
provide. It’s truly the best
of care.”
through the engagement
of a specialist camp
provider.
These camps provide
fun activities to help
children and adults to
rebuild confidence, selfesteem
and trust.
Knowing that camp
facilitators understand
epilepsy helps adults to
relax. Spending time with
other families promotes
peer support and peer
learning, while Epilepsy
Nurse Educators provide
specialised information
about epilepsy.
The activities
undertaken at the Action
The ticket machine was out
If you looked carefully at
NATURE NOTES
GANG GANG
COCKATOOS
I was recently standing
on Pennant Hills railway
station when a cockatoo
Eight outstanding
acreage gardens in Dural,
Galston and Kenthurst will
be open from 9.30am to
4.30pm each day. Detailed
with Nick Hodges
flew over. Not surprising,
you might think.
But this was a Gang-gang
Cockatoo which is unusual
- indeed, rare, in Sydney.
What alerted me to its
presence was its call - like
a creaky door. No other
cockatoo, in fact, no other
bird, sounds like this.
I caught a glimpse of the
slate grey bird - a male -
with its vivid scarlet head
and its wispy crest as it
passed on its way to the
bush in Pennant Hills Park.
Gang-gangs are about
This is just about the
best month to be
enjoying your
garden. Australian
native shrubs are
looking fantastic,
spring bulbs are in
full swing and
everything else is
bursting with health
and vitality!
• One thing I really do recommend is that you
visit your local independent garden centre
regularly through the spring months as they
will be getting in masses of new, exciting and
different plants at this busy time.
• Here’s a tip: when planting out new
Australian native trees and shrubs, always
female is similar to the
male but
its head and crest are as
grey as its body; instead it
has vague red and yellow
bars on its underparts.
Found in only the southeast
corner of the country,
the Gang-gang likes tall
open forest, although in
winter it can be seen on
farmland and even in
suburban gardens.
Once common around
Sydney it has suffered as a
result of habitat loss and is
now found only in the
northern suburbs centred
Pied Currawong, fresh out
of the nest,” Ms Bradshaw
said. “As they get older,
these birds will grow into
their characteristic black
“Pied Currawongs are
great to have around as
they will happily eat up
carrion, rodents, and
incorporate a generous amount of Australian
Native Planting Compost into the hole – it
will make all the difference. New plantings
should have a slight ‘well’ around them to
capture water.
• In the veggie patch, Tomatoes will be going
gangbusters. Keep well watered at the base of
the plant – not overhead spraying. Fertilise
regularly with Powerfeed or Harvest. Pick off
any diseased leaves. Plant some Marigolds
nearby – nice and cheerful flowers and they are
great friends with tomatoes and help keep bugs
away.
• The Yates product called Success is a good
spray to have on hand to control caterpillar
and other bug problems – it’s made from a
naturally occurring product called Spinosad
and has a low toxicity.
Children free.
Morning and afternoon
teas will be available in
gardens. The Growing
Gardens will have a stall
selling plants. Lunches are
available in the many local
Clubs, Cafes and Takeaways,
• It’s OK to plant Basil now. Lots of water, food
and sun! Pinch out the flower spikes to
prolong the life of the plant. I grow Purple
Basil in my flower garden as the foliage is such
a great colour contrast and in this instance I let
them flower to be kind to the bees!
• If you are planting Sweet Corn seedlings,
they will perform better if planted in a square,
space permitting. Cross pollination works more
effectively.
• Chillies can be planted now. They do really
well in pots in a hot spot. Don’t over fertilise
these. Chillies freeze really well if you harvest
too many and they can also be used as an
infusion in olive oil.
• Don’t worry if your Gardenias go through a
period of bud drop at this time. It does
sometimes happen. Just keep the water up to
them regularly and liquid fertilise with the
• Once ornamental flowering deciduous trees
such as cherry and almond, have finished
flowering, they can be pruned if needed. Also,
climbing roses are always pruned after
flowering (opposite to bush that are pruned
prior to flowering).
• Try and make your garden less water
dependent this coming summer – it’s certainly
my plan as I am too kind to my plants. They’ve
got to toughen up! Water in the morning -
NEVER use what I call the ‘fairy watering
method’ – standing back and hosing the
foliage. A waste of time, water and money.
Little moisture will penetrate the soil and your
plants will wait for that refreshing spray you so
kindly give them each day. Adopt the ‘slow and
low’ method – water at the base
of the plants.
Enjoy Spring in your garden
Reasons for infertility
emotional impact of those
suffering infertility along
with how family and
friends can support those
struggling with infertility
will be discussed at a
infertility and its impact on
them and their family.
Currently Marilyn is
TOURING EUROPE IN 2014
By Monique Monsees,
Cherrybrook Travel, Westleigh
Now that we are at the
ointy end of 2013,
raveller’s minds are
ooking to their 2014
We have had a lot of
nquiries already for
riting this article; we have
lready received APT,
cenic Tours and
vergreen.
One outstanding product
hat has also arrived on our
esk for 2014 is the
lbatross Tours Europe
nd Britain Summer 2014
rochure.
These tours are unique
n that they have been
pecifically designed for
ustralian and New
ealand travellers; are
uaranteed to operate with
minimum of 7
assengers; smaller group
izes set at a maximum of
0 guests (although the
verage is closer to 22);
eisurely paced with 2,3,4
r 5 night stays with the
nly 1 night stay usually
eing the first or last night
f a tour; genuine inclusive
ours with no additional
add-on sightseeing”, even
ips are included; charmng
character hotels in
xcellent locations; and
xpert commentary in
nglish only.
Instead of running fastaced
multi-country tours,
he Albatross tours focus
n one or two countries or
region; like Spain &
ortugal, France, Italy,
ngland & Scotland, and
he Black Forest, Bavaria &
hey Tyrol.
There are also four new
tours for 2014. There is the
14 day Croatia & Adriatic;
the 18 day Italy, the Deep
South & Sicily; and Turkey,
either the 7 day Spirit of
Gallipoli or the 15 day
Turkey, Gallipoli & The
Ottomans.
As these tours are
specifically designed for
the Australian and New
Zealand market this means
the tours of Turkey that
take in Gallipoli stay longer
on the Gallipoli Peninsula
and visit all the spots
significant to us ANZAC’s,
like the Lone Pine
Cemetery. Most tours of
Turkey from Albatross’
competitors usually only
spend an hour or two in
this area as they do not
really grasp the importance
of this area to the
Australian and New
Zealanders. Albatross
allow you plenty of time to
experience this area by
spending 3 nights in
Canakkale which even
allows time for a dawn visit
for a private wreath laying
ceremony to commemorate
the events of April 25,
1915.
The 7 Day Spirit of
Gallipoli stays 2 nights in
Istanbul, 3 nights in
Canakkale and 1 final
night in Istanbul.
The 15 day Turkey,
Gallipoli & The Ottomans
tour is the same as the
Spirit of Gallipoli but
instead of returning to
Istanbul on Day 6 it
continues south to
Kusadasi where you stay 3
nights. Here you have time
to visit Ephesus including
the Temple of Hadrian,
Library of Celsus, and the
House of the Virgin Mary.
From Kusadasi it’s on to
Pamukkale for a 2 night
stay including a visit,
naturally, to the petrified
white lime cascades. Then
from Pamukkale you travel
on to Cappadocia where
you will stay 3 nights in
the Gamirasu Cave Hotel.
This 30 room troglodyte
cave house is a restored
thousand-year-old
Byzantine monastic retreat.
As mentioned Albatross is
a true “no hidden add-ons”
tour operator so they have
also included an early
morning hot air balloon
ride over Cappadocia.
Sadly all good things
must come to an end and
this tour then ends back in
Istanbul for an overnight
stay before you fly out.
This tour departs once a
month from May through
to September. Prices start
from $3889 per person
twin share.
As mentioned these
tours are designed for
Australians and New
Zealanders which means
their All Quiet on the
Western Front tour, which
visits the WWI battlefields
of France and Belgium,
visits all the battle sites and
war cemeteries significant
to Australians and New
Zealanders. Names that we
have all studied at school
like Ypres, Amiens, Villers-
Bretonneaux, Tyne Cot,
Fromelles, Hill 60, and
Poziers. This 8 day tour
costs from $2589 per
person twin share and
operates once per month
from May through to
September.
Why not combine both
the Turkey tour and the
Photos of garden
gnomes and bouncing
puppies were some of the
winning photos that were
awarded first prize in
NEEDLES AWAY
Guardian Funerals is
appealing to local knitters
not to put away their
needles despite the warmer
weather. The annual Wrap
with Love appeal is far
from over, and thousands
of disadvantaged people all
views from the public
about the effectiveness of
the MAA and the LTCSA.
Please note the terms of
reference prevent the
Committee from
investigating individual
participants or
applications for
participation in the
Schemes.
“Many of the people who
receive donations from
Wrap with Love have no
homes and in some cases
very little shelter from the
elements at all. Even in
places where it’s warm
temperature can drop into
single digits or even get
below zero at night,” said
in the Wrap for Love
appeal. Just one square is all
you need to knit – although
entire blankets are more
than welcome too! Each
square should measure 25
cm by 25 cm. Plain garter
stitch is preferred so the
squares do not curl up.
Volunteers then sew sets of
28 squares together to make
each finished blanket.
Completed squares – or
blankets – can be dropped
off during business hours
at Guardian Funerals, 1496
‘OKLAHOMA!’ COMES TO NORMO
Set in a Western Indian
Territory just after the turn
of the century, the highspirited
rivalry between
the local farmers and
cowboys provides the
colourful background
against which Curly, a
handsome cowboy, and
Laurey, a winsome farm
girl, play out their love
story. Although the road to
true love never runs
smooth, with these two
headstrong romantics
holding the reins, love’s
journey is as bumpy as a
surrey ride down a country
road. That they will
succeed in making a new
life together, and that this
new life will begin in a
brand-new state provides
the ultimate climax to the
triumphant OKLAHOMA!
Performances of
Oklahoma! are on 25th,
26th October and 2nd,
8th, 9th November at
telephone on 9680 1442.
card holders and $15 for
children. Please advise at
Normahurst Uniting
Church Musical Society
will be presenting the
Rodgers and Hammerstein
classic ‘Oklahoma!’ from
October 25.
Rodgers &
Hammerstein’s first
collaboration remains, in
many ways, their most
innovative having set the
standards and established
the rules of musical theatre
still being followed today.
The score by Richard
Rodgers contains classics
such as Oh What a
Beautiful Mornin’, The
Surrey with the Fringe on
Top, People Will Say We’re
in Love and of course
Oklahoma!
The production is
directed by Mel Hogan
with choreography by
Laurie Tancred and music
direction by Ian Wesley.
GO 4 FUN
Exercising and having fun at
a recent Go4Fun session
Go4Fun is a FREE, fun
program funded by NSW
Health. It aims to improve
the health, fitness, selfesteem
and confidence in
children and it comes to
Hornsby on October 14.
Designed to teach
children and their families
the keys for a long and
healthy life, Go4Fun is a
10 week program held on
Mondays and Wednesdays
from 4.30pm to 6.30pm
and run by the Hornsby
PCYC.
Sessions include
informative games, fun
and active exercise
activities, tips on healthy
food, label reading,
portion size, healthy
shopping on a budget
plus much more.
Northern Sydney Local
Health District’s Go4Fun
Coordinator, Jonathan
Noyes, said the program
has been specifically
designed for children aged
7-13 years who may be
above their healthy weight.
“However, rather than
focusing on weight loss,
the program uses a
practical interactive
learning approach to get
children more active and
eating healthier,” Jonathon
explained.
“Parents are also
included in the program so
that healthy changes can
happen at home to support
their child. This means
Hornsby State Liberal
MP Matt Kean is
encouraging local groups
to apply for NSW
could fund new sport
facilities or programs that
help people get active.
The NSW Government is
offering grants to local
sporting groups and
councils planning new and
improved sports facilities or
Mr Kean has invited
applications for the first
round of Sport and
Recreation Participation
and Facility Program
grants this year.
Applications close on
October 30.
Key points of the
program are: Grants are
capped at $10,000 for
participation projects and
Organisations may apply
for multiple projects or
project types, with the
maximum available to any
one organisation in a
financial year capped at
$50,000; Applicants must
contribute 50% or more to
the project.
Examples of projects
eligible for funding: Facility
projects – the construction
of new, fixed and portable
facilities; and enhancement
of existing facilities;
Participation projects –
deliver a program or service
that will assist people to
become more active.
Projects that make sport
and recreation facilities
safer, more accessible and
environmentally sustainable
and programs that provide
greater sporting options to
seniors, people with a
disability and other groups
facing barriers to
participation are strongly
encouraged to apply.
