Healing
with Moxibustion
By Linda Sullivan, DOM
This powerful treatment stimulates circulation and a
smoother flow of blood through the acupuncture points
and throughout the body. It also produces a calming, analgesic
(pain relieving) effect. When the skin is warmed by the
moxibustion process, an anti-inflammatory response is initiated
and the healing response is triggered. It’s an amazing therapeutic
tool that’s been used with acupuncture for centuries.
Moxibustion can be applied in dif-
ferent ways; directly or indirectly. Direct
moxibustion therapy involves the process
of burning the dried herb artemesia
vulgaris over certain parts of the body or
acupuncture needles. This produces heat,
Traditional Moxibustion
which can penetrate deeply into the muscles
Set from Ibuki (Japan) and acupuncture meridians. The fragrance
of the herb travels through the meridians regulating Qi (life force)
and blood, and expelling cold from the meridians. The process can
beautifully resolve the symptoms of the common cold, abdominal
discomfort (and other types of pain), diarrhea and muscle spasms.
It also works well when used for urinary problems, phlegm in the
lungs, poor digestion, nodules in the skin and arthritis.
In conjunction with acupuncture, moxibustion therapy can
also be very effective for many diseases and conditions including
back pain, muscle stiffness, headaches, migraines, tendonitis,
arthritis, digestive disorders, anxiety, and female health problems
such as menstrual cramps, irregular periods, and infertility.
In the hands of a skilled doctor of Oriental Medicine who understands
where and how to apply it, moxibustion can be used
safely and effectively with great results. To learn more about moxibustion
and whether or not it could benefit, you, please call Linda
