Disaster or Opportunity?

Mom, you won’t believe what has happened!”
My son’s voice on the other end of the phone
caught me off guard, and I braced myself. I’d
heard that panicked sound before. “The huge
metal patio cover…it’s in the neighbor’s yard—and electrical
wires…dangling in the backyard.” These were not the words I
was hoping to hear after an intense workday, but sure enough,
last April’s winds devastated our yard, roof, and electrical
wiring.
“Why is this happening to me?” I heard my victim voice
say. “Why me? Why now?” I repeated the question, internally,
and in those first moments, I knew I had a choice. My internal
dialogue teetered back and forth. This is an example of the very
thing you teach, Tina. (Yes, I was talking to myself). You’ve got
to walk your talk… and NOW! I took a deep breath and slowly
changed my tune. Amazingly, the same words came to me but
with different thoughts behind them. “Why is this happening
to me?” I asked. I chose my words carefully; Let me see this
situation differently. Let me see this situation not as a disaster but
as an opportunity… as a blessing in disguise.
Metaphysical teachings tell us “It is all Good; everything
is in order,” but then when something goes ‘wrong’, we
wonder what has happened. We hear phrases like, “Change
your thinking; change your life,” and then when ‘bad’ things
happen; we mentally beat ourselves up because somehow our
thinking was ‘wrong’ because we created a mess instead, or so
we have labeled it as such.
Fault lies not in human beings but rather in how human
beings have learned to judge themselves and life situations. We
could all get together in one room and make two lists: things
that are bad and things that are good. For the most part, we
would all agree on the lists. But I would like to suggest that
the destruction of my home be on the “good” list, and there
would be nothing on the ‘bad’ list. I would like to suggest
that loss of job, security, relationship, and even life, be on
the ‘good’ list because when we open ourselves enough to
intuit a bigger picture, a picture which includes other eternal
dimensions, beings, and life, there may be situations we do
not understand with our human minds, but there is nothing
that we experience that is not for our best and highest good.
The reason I suffer when a ‘bad’ thing comes to pass is
because I have decided it is ‘bad’, and I refuse to let go of that
decision. Things are not going my way; my life stinks…but only
because I’m attached to life being a certain way, the way I
learned it was supposed to be when I was growing up, the way
I have judged ‘right’.
These days, humans are experiencing many changes which
are happening quickly. I believe we are being called to let
go of our attachments, including judgments, beliefs, things,
and people in order to ride with the flow of change. We are
being called to surrender to our Wholeness, accept ourselves
completely, and live fully on the planet…without judgment.
Seeing good in everything and everyone is expansive.
Resistance is what causes pain.
The money received from my insurance company, along
with monies from an unexpected second income source
(another blessing), allowed me to renovate more than my
backyard. Two bathrooms and kitchen have been revamped as
well. And just like my remodeled kitchen, sometimes we have
to go through the torn up stages before the new, remodeled
‘good’ shows its face. Sometimes the blessings take time to see.
