In order to present comparable data, hospitals are classified in this report according to the Emergency Care Framework definitions, i.e. Level 2 Hospitals (DGHs with no in-patient paediatric wards), Level 3 Hospitals (in-patient paediatric facilities) and Level 4 Hospitals (paediatric intensive care/advanced high dependency facilities). The Southern General Institute of Neuroscience data was included in the Level 3 Hospital analysis and Ninewells Hospital (ECF Level 3) is included with the Level 4 Children’s Hospitals. Level 2 Hospitals are sub-divided into Rural (2R) and Urban (2) to differentiate between their patient casemix. Rural General Hospitals regularly admit children as there is no alternative due to their location, and Urban Level 2 Hospitals provide care in many NHS Boards for young people over 13 years. Adult wards in Ninewells Hospital and the Southern General Hospital are included in Urban Level 3 Hospitals. NR
