A secondary journey is defined as a journey between hospitals; this may indicate the need to
transfer a child to another hospital to receive definitive care, or to transfer a child back to a hospital
closer to home. 910 secondary journeys were recorded in the audit, i.e. admission from ‘other
hospital’ or end destination was ‘other hospital’.
The chart below displays the recorded methods of transport used for secondary journeys. It was
recorded that 42% of all secondary transfers have been undertaken by a specialised team, 7% of
transfers were to or from a maternity hospital and are shown separately in the chart below. It is
assumed that they were undertaken by the Neonatal Transport Teams. It is unlikely the
interpretation of ‘specialised team’ was restricted to only the PIC Retrieval Teams in this category
due to the high numbers recorded in this audit (annual retrieval activity is 250 – 300 transfers).
The 3 secondary transfers undertaken by parental/carer transport were from Remote and Rural
locations.
