Royal Asiatic Society China - Newsletter Vol 4 No 6 – June 2013 2 A note from our President MAY has been an exceptionally active month and so nice to see so many of you at the various events, beginning with the Farewell Reception for Peter, Neale and Simon, which you can read about on the following pages. We had a special Double Feature “Walk & Talk” by Sven Serrano with Betty Barr in attendance. The walk around Lunghwa CAC was oversubscribed and Sven has offered to stage this again later in the year for the benefit of those on the waiting list. An Evening with Liz Barron resulted in Liz donating copies of: the cine film, photographs, Grandfather’s journal and Grandmother’s letters, all for the RAS Library archives. An exciting development from this event was an e-mail to our enquiry box from Tony Palfreeman in Australia: Good morning from Australia I note with much interest that Liz Barron is speaking in Shanghai on May 16. Love to be there but can’t make it this time. But would like a contact email address for Liz. Reason is I was born in Shanghai, as was my mother, so we have a long connection. Liz’s family, the Pardoes, were good friends with my parents way back in the mists of time. So would like to talk to her Many thanks. Regards, Tony Palfreeman We were able to put Tony in touch with Liz, hence further connections were made. So, it is excellent that RAS China was able to help in this respect and hopefully will further add to our archival material. It was also delightful to meet Liz and her husband Tony. Making a brief visit to Shanghai, Dr Da Zheng from Suffolk University, Boston, took time out of his schedule to present to us on Chiang Yee and Three Women. Chiang Yee's travel writings have recently been introduced to readers in China, and he was the one who translated "Coca Cola" into "Ke-kou-ke-le," which has been widely recognized as a classic translation. The final event last month was Peter Hibbard’s Book Launch - Peace at the Cathay. Introduced by Neale McGoldrick and publisher Graham Earnshaw, Peter shared a wealth of knowledge and images on this famous hotel, in the lovely surroundings of the Cincin Bar (photo left). With grateful thanks to all our wonderful speakers and contributors for a truly interesting range of subjects and presentations. JUNE will end our Spring/Summer session. We have three Lectures/Weekenders scheduled – Michael Humphries’ Book Launch, plus two visiting distinguished scholars from the USA: Professors David Porter and Benjamin Elman. So please do join us for these events plus our regular focus group meetings – details below. FAREWELL RECEPTION 12 th May for Peter Hibbard Neale McGoldrick and Simon Drakeford On a lovely balmy Shanghai evening, graciously hosted by Liz and Brendan Jennings, RAS members gathered to pay tribute and celebrate the contribution of three Council members who between them have notched up over 50 years in China. Neale and Simon, along with Peter’s wife Susan and daughter Sasha, were presented with copies of Colours and Characters of China, as a token ‘thank you’ for their wonderful support to RAS. Peter has been the driving force central to the development of the Society since it reconvened in 2007. In recognition of this, Peter was honoured and appointed HONORARY VICE PRESIDENT, RAS China and President Katy Gow, presented him with a Silver Pin of “Tug” the stone lion which had been chosen in 2007 to be the RAS China logo. This represents a link between the former North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (NCBRAS) and the newly reconvened Branch. Adapted from a lion carving on the former RAS building in Huqiu Lu, the logo was named “Tug” after senior architect George Leopold Wilson (1880-1967) who was familiary known by this name. Hon Vice President Nenad Djordjevic and Vice Presidents Tess Johnston & Jan Flohr all spoke highly of Peter’s contribution and Brendan raised a glass to toast all three and say Thank You and Bon Voyage as they leave Shanghai for far off shores. It was a very special evening. 3 3
