Callot’s Misères et les mal-heurs de la Guerre was first published in Paris in 1633 by the well-known printer Israel
Henriet. Ten of the eighteen impressions in this set are from the second state of three, indicated by the publisher’s
name inscribed in the plate. These impressions were printed on Hachet paper c.1633, and are especially fine and
crisp. The last plate in the series is from the third state of four (from the same printing as the second state of the other
plates, and just as fine). Seven of the impressions (including the one illustrated above) are from the third state of
three, printed c. 1742. The original publisher’s name was removed on the third state plates and replaced with the
artist’s. Although not quite as fine as second state impressions, these third state impressions are very good.
