Canberra Jazz Club Newsletter Apr – May 2012 2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT Having just come home after a very nostalgic afternoon of Jazz at the SCC Jamison, I have to say what an enjoyable afternoon it has been. So nice to catch up with old friends and to meet new ones. It reminded me of all the gatherings over the years when, wherever there was Jazz playing, familiar faces would be there and talking to them was part of the fun. The house band for the day included Tony Thomas, Ron Cook, Ian Hill and Jim Styles. But it was decided that we should have a sit-in set, and boy did we have a sit-in. Jim Lole, David Lole, John Sharpe, Terry Wynn, Chris Hopman, Chris Gleeson, Dirk Zeylmans, and Robin Gaskell. Then to top it off we had a couple of numbers from a good part of the Fortified Few. Of course part of the enjoyment for all is the audience response and we were lucky to have so many people who really enjoy Jazz music. We hope that all will come along when next we have a function there, and also support the other functions which we run. We always welcome new members and new ideas. Easter is almost upon us, and then Anzac Day, but on the 15 th of April we will be meeting at The Austrian Club for an afternoon of Jazz with The Bridge City/ Black Mountain Jazz band. This is a very nice venue which we have used before so come along and enjoy this well–rehearsed band. The next event on our calendar is the Robertson Safari on May 6 th . As those who have joined us before will know bookings are essential, payment with booking please, the cost will be mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter. I haven’t mentioned that on the 14 th and 15 th of April John Buchanan will be presenting his Classic Jazz, Ragtime and Swing at Frencham College, Mittagong. This is always a splendid event, with most of the top musicians performing. The other big event coming on the long weekend in June (Queens Birthday) is the Jazz Festival at Merimbula. Our Committee has been working very hard to present something each month and your attendance makes it all worthwhile, Jazz is such a happy music and unless we keep presenting live Jazz it will disappear. We keep hoping that the young musicians will join us and not let this music fade away. Don’t forget that we also list the Jazz programs available on radio. I would also like to tell you that one of our older members died last month, Neville White. He played Clarinet and was kind enough to record two Clarinet Concertos for me. He will be missed by those who knew him. Canberra Jazz Club Newsletter Apr – May 2012 3 UPCOMING CJC FUNCTIONS Sunday 15 April – a special afternoon of jazz at the Austrian Club, Mawson featuring our favourite combo of Sydney’s Bridge City Band and the guys still playing from the disbanded (but never forgotten) Black Mountain Jazz Band. It promises to be a great afternoon of New Orleans style jazz and we hope to see a huge crowd there. Details on the back page. Sunday 6 May – Great Jazz Safari to the Robertson Pub. This is a terrific day out with our fellow jazz enthusiasts from the Sydney and Illawarra jazz clubs. Host club this year is Illawarra and they have organised a 7-piece band for the occasion. This is a popular event and we expect to fill the bus so don’t hesitate to get your booking in. Refer to page 9 for details. Sunday 17 June – continuing our afternoons of great jazz at the Southern Cross Club, Jamison (Wests). Join us for three hours of live jazz from 1.00 pm and lunch from 12.30 pm. Details on page 8. Sunday 15 July – a mystery jazz in the country bus trip. We’ve planned lunch and some mystery jazz just a short bus trip from Canberra. Why not join in the fun? Details on page 8. Sunday 19 August – a special gig at Southern Cross Club, Jamison (Wests). We are pleased to announce that our Club patron and reeds player extraordinaire, Paul Furniss will be joining the Canberra Jazz Club Band for what promises to be an afternoon of great trad jazz. NOT TO BE MISSED! One of the Jazz characters of Canberra, Gerry Gardiner died just a month ago. This fine Bass player has had a very interesting career. He had a mother who played Piano, a grandfather who played Violin, and his father collected Jazz records. He started playing a Tea Chest Bass in his teens, and then finally started to play a real Acoustic Bass. He taught himself to play using a Classical Bass Tutoring book. His Jazz career started when he met Bob Bertles and joined a group which played in Sydney. In the 50s he then started to play with Johnny O’Keefe and the DeeJays Band. Lee Gordon was the manager so they did television work, backed other artists at Festival Records, and supported many of the overseas artists who played at the Stadium in Sydney. After Johnny had his car accident, Gerry moved on to his great love which was modern Jazz. He played at El Rocco in Sydney with Col Nolan and John Sangster. Eventually he came to Canberra in 1962. He played in a trio for the next three years at The Pendulum, a coffee shop and late night venue in Garema Place. This was one of the first places in Canberra to feature modern Jazz. He also played with Tom Hartley in a group called Tom and Gerry, a well known duo at Bogarts and other venues. For those who don’t remember Bogarts, it was located in the Canberra Building and became a very popular place to go after the theatre. Peter Robertson and Stirling Primmer also played at Bogarts. In his last few years Gerry played with Dirk Zeylmans. He is remembered by all those who knew him as a good muso and a nice man. My thanks to Gerry’s daughter Leaf for all the information.
