Shannon Markham has been
represent BCS and Australia in 4
events in Vancouver in Canada.
Shannon was selected at state level
for high jump. She will also compete
& Triple Jump.
Shannon will travel around different areas of
Vancouver to compete for medals. This is an 18
‣ PRINCIPALS NEWS
In the coming weeks the school body will be voting in
our next group of school leaders in the form of school
captains and vice captains. When we run the process
in schools we are always hopeful that those students
voted in by their peers and staff members will in fact
be voted in because of their leadership qualities
rather than being just popular. In a democratic society
voting is a fairly standard way of appointing “officeholders”
whom we then look to for leadership.
Unfortunately voting is no guarantee that leadership
will emerge because voters’ opinions and criteria will
always dictate how they vote.
Popularity may get a friend into a position but it does
not necessarily get the right leader into the right
position of authority to ensure productive and
creative achievement with others.
This in no way detracts from our 2012-2013
candidates, all of whom have displayed leadership
qualities that would make them an ideal captain or
day trip of a life time. After competition,
Shannon will spend a couple of days in Los
Angeles to visit universal studios and Disneyland
before flying home.
In July this year Shannon’s younger sister Megan
of Year 7 is representing the school at state level
Cross Country at Eastern Creek. Best of luck to
both of these Bulahdelah Central School students,
do us proud!
vice captain of the school. I believe it is our process in
getting nominations and the criteria that those
students must meet that makes the difference
between a student who is just popular against
students who do actually display leadership qualities.
We expect our nominated students to possess both
personal leadership and public leadership qualities,
they need to be effective role models for their peers
and set a positive tone at the top of the school. It is
important they display the skills and mindsets they
need for leading others and have a greater
understanding of leadership in general.
We are extremely lucky to have staff that are
prepared to work with our leadership body to ensure
our student leaders continue to receive valuable
teacher support and learning opportunities to further
develop their leadership skills and potential.
I look forward to working with whoever is successful
in the elections as I sure they will continue to do
themselves, their families and the school proud.
All games were played in a good spirit and
trophies were shared between the two schools.
Congratulations to all the students from both
Gloucester and Bulahdelah who played and also
to Staff who either refereed or coached teams.
We will look forward to the return at Gloucester
next year.
This week our Year 12 Science and Maths
students travelled to Armidale for an HSC
Booster(study) Course at the UNE. Mr Naylor and
Ms Brewer accompanied them and though it as
very cold, students gained some useful insights
and information about the UNE and their HSC
courses.
Year 9 and 10 completed their semester one
exams last week and this week Years 7 and 8 will
sit their exams. Teachers will now commence
writing student reports which will be handed to
students in the last week. Parents will have the
opportunity to discuss reports with their child’s
teachers early in Term 3.
The school is well into the process of selecting
the student leadership team for 2012/13 and
students will shortly elect SRC and the school
captains. There are a large number of quality
candidates and a short profile appears for your
information in this newsletter.
We are currently having a few issues with
students leaving school during lunchtime without
permission to go and buy food at the petrol
stations in town. Could parents please help by
reminding their children that they are not
allowed to leave school without a pass issued by
the Deputy Principal and that lunch passes are
only issued to students to go straight home at
lunch. We have a very good canteen which offers
fresh food and a variety of hot food during the
winter months at very reasonable prices.
‣ BCS PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL:
It is good to be back from leave and I would like
to thank Mrs Wills for her hard work as acting DP,
in my absence, and Mrs McDonald for her efforts
as acting AP, during the same period. I
acknowledge and appreciate their commitment.
I have some exciting news that I would like to
share with you. Our stage 3 students were the
overall winners of the Mid Coast Science and
Engineering challenge, held in Taree last week.
Both Mrs McDonald and Mr Backhouse were
extremely proud of the level of engagement and
efforts of the students, on the day. Our students
demonstrated the core values of participation,
respect, innovation, determination and
excellence and it was reported that they were
wonderful ambassadors for our school.
Congratulations to the students who attended
this fantastic event!! Their achievements, at such
an event, are testament to the many learning
opportunities available to the students, at school,
through the design and technology syllabus. The
trophy is proudly on display in the office foyer.
Take a look!!! Thanks to Mrs McDonald and Mr
Backhouse for accompanying and encouraging
the students to “Strive to Achieve.”
The athletics carnival is done and dusted yet
again for another year. We were very lucky to get
the carnival completed, last week, before the
return of rain over the weekend. I would like to
thank the students for their participation, the
parents for their support and assistance, on the
day, and the staff for their work in running the
events. It was a great day of fun and competition.
We very much appreciate the support and input
of parents, on such days, and thank all parents for
your continued support. The success of carnivals
is largely due to the organisation that is done
prior to the day and I would like to thank Mrs.
Wills for the many hours of work she put into
facilitating the carnival. Thanks Mrs Wills!
The zone carnival will be held in Term 3. Students
who qualify will be notified of details, closer to
the date.
Our girls’ soccer team was defeated by a stronger
Dungog side, last week. The girls were
competitive and didn’t give up until the full time
whistle sounded. Well done girls! Thanks to Mrs.
Murphy for coaching and preparing the team for
competition.
Simply start collecting stickers at the checkout of
your local Woolworths supermarket (self-service
too) until July 22nd to place on your child’s
sticker card. There’ll be one sticker for every $10
spent, excluding purchases of liquor,
smoking/tobacco products and gift cards. Once
completed, simply drop the sticker card into a
collection box,
either at your
school or at your
local Woolworths.
If you don’t have any children at school, you can
still help support a local school simply by
dropping your stickers into one of the collection
boxes found at the front of the store.
We can’t wait to help your school earn valuable
learning resources - just by shopping at
Woolworths. Last year we gave away over $4.5
million worth of resources to more than 6,900
schools that participated across Australia.
‣ PSSA PRIMARY GIRLS SOCCER:
On the 29th May, our PSSA primary girl’s soccer
team travelled to Dungog to compete in the PSSA
knockout soccer competition. After a short ride
on our school bus, we arrived with energy
pumping and energy high. The girls started off
stunningly with the first goal being scored by our
super fast striker Mary Bramston. Things were
looking good for us. The rest of the half was hard
and Dungog seemed to have a few strong players
in their front line. They bunched together making
it very difficult for our defense, Grace
Germanos, Jessica Lyall and Jordyn Watt, to clear
the ball but they did magnificently along with our
powerful goal keeper Kensley Nassif. Their
players were too persistent and although both
teams seemed to have a fair share of the ball,
Dungog were able to execute their plays with
more precision. At half time, the score was 5-2.
We were determined to catch up and had a few
position changes in the second half. We scored
another 2 goals (Brooke Towers and Mary
Bramston), but continued to struggle to keep the
ball from Dungog. They scored 4 more goals
leaving us behind at full time with a score of 9-4.
The mid field players, Eva Germanos, Madison
Hurtado, Elly-Rae Banks, Holly Towers, Tayla
Hartley and Seleana Murphy, were exhausted
running backwards and forwards, helping both
the forwards and the defense. We definitely used
our positions well and were able to utilise our
wingers, Kayly Whitfield and Hayley Chalker,
showing great knowledge of the game. Overall,
both teams played well and our team
represented the school showcasing
determination and fairness. Well done girls!
Collecting vouchers is easy! Every member of
your school’s community will earn one voucher
for every $10 spent in a Coles, Coles Online, BI-LO
or Pick ‘n’ Pay store from June 13th to August
14th 2012.
For every $10 spent, they’ll earn 1 voucher
1 x Coles Sports For Schools voucher = 1 Point
Plus throughout the program there will be
opportunities to collect bonus vouchers with our
special promotional offers on over 1,800 selected
products. So keep an eye out instore, online and
on TV!
Excluded items include: Coles Group gift cards,
Coles Mobile plans, alcohol, tobacco and tobacco
related products. Other products may also be
excluded at Coles’ discretion.
BCS students would like to encourage you to
collect vouchers from family and friends as the
more vouchers we collect, the more sports gear
our school will receive!
‣ BE A STAR PROGRAM
Be a STAR is an anti-bullying alliance co-founded
by The Creative Coalition and WWE. Its mission is
to ensure a positive and equitable social
environment for everyone regardless of age, race,
religion through grassroots efforts beginning with
education and awareness.
The basic aims of the, Be a STAR program is to
offer assistance to individuals who have
experienced bullying, provide students with
strategies to deal with bullying and to work with
other caring individuals to create a bully-free
environment for everyone.
The, Be a STAR program is conducted during
normal Stage 3 lessons, with Mrs Guthrie leading
the group.
To gain an insight into what students perceive as
bullying and how bullying effects students,
students from kindergarten - year 6 been invited
to participate in a bullying survey developed by
Mrs Guthrie.
Students were asked the follow questions;
How old are you?
What do you think bullying is?
Have you ever been bullied?
Have you every bullied anyone?
Why do you think people bully each other?
How can we put a stop to bullying?
The bullying survey was conducted in an
interview format at school, which has
National Hoodie Day was held at Bulahdelah
Central School on Tuesday the 5 th of June. This
day was part of our year 12 assessment and
we chose Hoodie Day to support the AIME
foundation (Australian Indigenous Mentoring
Experience). From kindergarten through to
Year 12, everyone wore a hoodie and kindly
made a donation.
National Hoodie Day happens every year
around Australia, to raise awareness about
aboriginal education and to help all
Australian children get the best education
they can. At BCS it was organised by our year
12 English Studies class and our teacher Ms
Our donations were given to Stewart House
charity in Sydney and we raised over $200 on the
been videoed. On completion of all student
interviews the videos have been compiled into a
mini documentary to be view by stage 3 students
and used as the base for the development of a
student led anti-bullying campaign at Bulahdelah
Central School.
Students involved in the video process were:
Kindergarten - Zoe Lee & Sean Whalan
Yr1 - Toby Barry and Charlie Luxon
Yr2 - Bridie O'Connell & Beau Saville
Yr3 - Zachary Perrot & Chloe Hartley
Yr4 - Heidi Buchanan & Beau Thatcher
‣ CAPTAIN ELECTION NOMINEES FOR 2012/2013
The following students have nominated to run for Bulahdelah Central School Captains for 2012/2013 each
of these students will be interviewed by the School executive to assess their suitability for the role of
captain. Students will vote for one male and one female captain, two male and two female vice captains.
Voting will be held on Tuesday 19 th June. Pre-voting is permitted on Monday 18 th June if prior
arrangements have been made with Secondary Deputy Principal, Mr Horton (only if attending a school
excursion on Tuesday). Voting is not permitted at any other times. Here are our nominees:
Alex Barry
I have been an active member of the Student Representative Council (SRC), since
year 8. I have attended Leadership Camps for the SRC for the past 2 years. I can
easily communicate with most students and I will endeavour to improve my public
speaking ability.
Jarrad Chapman
I have been to numerous leadership camps and I am good at problem solving and
decision making. I would like to be school captain so I can bring my unique
perspective and skills to the captaincy role and do my best to improve Bulahdelah
Central School
Brittany Dorney
I would like to be school captain because I believe it would further develop my
confidence in public speaking and give me the opportunity to represent the student
body throughout the community. I believe I hold the necessary characteristics needed
to be successful if elected as school captain as I am a kind, caring person with a wide
range of interest which would allow me to be a respectable and responsible role
model for younger peers. If elected as school captain I promise to complete all tasks to
the best of my ability.
Sofie Dorney
It would be an amazing opportunity and an honour to represent our school as
2012/2013 school captain. I really enjoyed being an SRC member and having a
leadership role within the school. Being school captain would give me the chance to be
a leader of the school, assist student when possible and have an opinion on change.
6

Kiah Finch
In previous years I have achieved many leadership roles, including, SRC 2008,
Bradman house Captain, 2011 “Little Nettys” assistant coach (2007-2011),
Primary school captain (2007). Throughout these roles I have achieved
personal growth through communication skills, conflict resulting and
interacting with others. To be a leader is to learn along with lead. I am at an
age where leadership would be a lifetime skill to have and an experience that I
believe I would enjoy and represent the school in the correct way.
Casey Gooch
I believe I have the qualities to make a good school captain. I am a good listener and I am
willing to assist all students. I am currently a reading tutor, peer support leader and I feel
I am a very fair and approachable person. I am proud of our school and would be
honoured to represent it in the role of school captain. If elected I promise to do my best
at all times.
Mary-Anne Gooch
This year, I was involved in peer support, which helped my leadership
ability. I also believe that tutoring the younger students in reading groups
has helped my leadership ability. I would like to be school captain because
I think it is a great opportunity to further develop my leadership skills and I
would also like to be able to contribute to the school on a higher level.
Rebekah Hinitt
I have participated in SRC this year. I’m a strong person by nature and will push mine
and others opinions when I think it is necessary. I’m fine with talking in front of
people and am committed to all events that I must attend.
Gabrielle Keaton
I believe I would make a good school captain because I lead by example through
my participation in school activities. I love my sport and I like trying to get
others involved. I take pride in the fact that I associate with others from years
above and below rather than just staying with my year.
7

Charlotte King
I’ve been attending this school since kindergarten, before that Bulahdelah Preschool. I
have always lived in Bulahdelah, so I know all the people in this town. I pride myself in
knowing this school and its policies. I would truly be honoured to be given this
opportunity to be 2012/2013 school captain.
Katrina Mason
I believe I would be a good school captain because I always try my hardest in
everything I do. I would like to help with making our school a safe and fun
environment to be in. I’m currently Wentworth’s Vice Captain and I would
like to take my experience and become captain for the school. Together I and
my fellow year group would be able to take the school to new heights.
Vera Pekich
I am a very hardworking student and I am friendly with fellow peers and teachers. I
have attended Bulahdelah Central School since kindergarten and I would be honoured
and would do a great job of representing my school which I have been part of for 14
years of my life.
Samantha Rinortner
I am a good leader. In primary school, I was school captain, although
there were only 40 students in the school, it still counts. I was elected
Bradman house captain this year and have so far been able to lead
Bradman in winning the swimming carnival and cross country. I would
like to be school captain as I am proud to be a student at Bulahdelah Central
and I believe this opportunity will allow me to develop my public speaking and
leadership skills.
8

Lauren Shultz
I would like to become the 2012/2013 school captain as I believe I am developing skills
in leadership that would assist me greatly. I am prepared to dedicate my time to the
job and learn new skills that are involved within the role. I feel that I am up to
completing the task to the best of my ability.
Kaylah Tennyson
The reason why I would like to be school captain is because I believe
that I am a well behaved, well mannered student that has always, and
always will, hand in homework and assignments on time. I have never been
suspended or, had a planning room since I have attended Bulahdelah Central. I
have attended Bulahdelah Central since Year 7 and will graduate from Bulahdelah
Central in Year 12. I always follow teacher’s instructions and school rules and
would be glad to try and get more involvement in school activities.
Ray Thoroughgood
I show great leadership skills as I have been involved with the School Representative
Council. I am a strong leader who will always try to improve as many aspects in the
school as possible. I am proud of my school and wish to lead the school through
another successful year. As a school captain, I would always try to achieve to the
best of my ability for the school and my fellow students.
‣ STEPHANIE ALEXANDER KITCHEN GARDEN PROGRAM
Growing Harvesting Preparing and Sharing
Our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden
Program is now in full swing and has
been keeping the children very busy down
on the farm. Years 5 & 6 are doing a
fantastic job building their garden, and are in the
middle of making some great laying boxes for their chickens.
Year 3 & 4 have been busy making
mosaics, building trellises and planting
fruit trees, vegies and herbs. Their vegies
are starting to take off meaning that soon
we will move on to our next phase of the
program......harvesting, preparing and sharing,
something the children are very excited about.
I would like to say a special thank you to all
our wonderful volunteers who make our
classes all the more enjoyable, and a special
thank you to Angie and Jackie for the
Getting outside or just a short
while everyday is healthy in
many ways. In just 10-20
minutes you can receive your
daily dose of vitamin D,
important for bones, muscles
and overall health. Vitamin D is
not readily available from food,
so good old fashioned sunlight
for a few minutes a day (outside
peak UV times of course) is the
best way to get it. Heading
outside also ensures you and
your kids get some physical
exercise and a break from TV
and computer screens. For more
ideas to get physical go to:
Telling the time
Learning to tell the time is one
of those life skills that, well,
takes time. There are some
great resources on the School A
to Z website that can help. This
page includes a downloadable
clock template and both
analogue and digital time
