‣ STEPHANIE ALEXANDER KITCHEN GARDEN PROGRAM:Not all Australian children eat well. A disturbingnumber go to school each day without breakfast.Nearly a third is overweight or obese. We knowthat poor food choices lead to poor health, andthat the obesity epidemic is the public healthissue of our time.Almost as confronting is the cultural deprivationthat comes with the loss of familial foodexperiences. In losing access to the shared table, children are deprived of a crucial centre point forfamily life and an opportunity to share, interactand try something new.The good news is that children are as responsiveto positive food experiences as they are tonegative ones. And the Stephanie AlexanderKitchen Garden Program provides limitlessopportunities for positive experiences. We know that the Kitchen Garden Programworks! Many activities and learningwill take place between now and the end of theterm. Our debating team comprising of Tim Smith,Mary Bramston, Savannah Williams and IsabellaFrancis were successful in their debate againstTea Gardens Primary School last week. It was animpromptu debate where the students weregiven the topic and only had one hour to preparetheir case. The topic was “Boys have it betterthan girls,” and we were the negative. This greatresult means we now progress to the semi-finalof the competition. We will debate TuncurryPrimary School in Week 4. I would like tocongratulate the students on their fantasticachievement. We are very proud of the team andwish them luck in their next debate. I would liketo thank Mrs Wills for her work in preparing thestudents. Our Stage 3 students are preparing for theirexcursion to Wangat Lodge in Week 6. If you haven’talready done so, could parents please return themedical forms so that Mrs McDonald can getthings sorted and finalised. This is a timeconsuming job and one made easier with yourcooperation. Thanks! We are running a gymnastics program for allstudents K-6 this term. The program will run for 5weeks and will cost the students $20, whatexcellent value! The decision to offer gymnastics comes from arequest from a group of active Year 5 boys. Thestaff thought it was a great idea, so we haveengaged the services of a professional gymnasticsgroup “Activated” to deliver the course to thestudents. We request the money be paid inadvance. Your cooperation with this will begreatly appreciated. The classes will begin inWeek 3.Our friends from pre-school begin theirKindergarten orientation with us this week. Wewelcome them to BCS and trust that they willenjoy their taste of “big school.” I know Mr Gibbswill have many interesting and exciting activitiesto ensure an enjoyable experience. The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Gardenprogram is really powering along. The studentsare really enjoying their kitchen and gardenclasses, appreciating the gate to plate philosophyof the program. The garden is producing a rangeof fruit and vegetables and the infrastructurecontinues to grow and enhance the program. Thelarger garden beds are nearing completion, thechook pen has been started and should becompleted prior to the end of the year and awatering system has been installed. The garden isdefinitely worth having a look at. The focus in thekitchen is on fostering independence anddeveloping skills in pasta and dough making. Weare so very fortunate to have such skilled andknowledgeable kitchen and garden specialists anda fantastic group of volunteers who make theprogram the success that it is. We always needvolunteers so if you would like to be a part of thisamazing program, contact me at school.8
