Friday 22 nd March
Students and teachers assembled on the
top oval ready for our annual Mount Alum
Cross Country Run in very warm
conditions. After some very quick starts
by Mr Stace they were off and running.
Water bottles and I-pods in hand students
took off for their first glimpse of the new
bridge that crosses over the highway.
‣ PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
Be a more neglectful parent
Continuing my theme from the past
two newsletters I came across another
good comment about how we are ruining our kids
lives by our actions to protect them at all costs.
Tracy Grant writing in The Washington Post
suggests we need to be a better, more
understanding, more perfect parent in 2013.
Tracy puts forward the argument that to be
better we need to be more neglectful. She
doesn’t actually advocate neglect but suggests
that as parents we just need a little less hovering,
a little less worrying, and a little less intervening.
Going on to argue that if we give it a try, we
might just wind up with less grey hair and better
relationships with our kids by year’s end.
Wendy Mogel, a clinical psychologist and author
of the parenting books “The Blessing of a Skinned
Knee” and “The Blessing of a B-” advocates the
following as a way to become a more neglectful
parent:
1. Don’t assume the worst. “We have become a
society of good parents gone bad: loving,
devoted, intelligent parents who keep saying to
themselves ‘what if. . . ’ ” .
2. Don’t make your children assume the worst.
Children live in a very different world from adults
and that’s sometimes hard to remember.
“Children aren’t nervous until we make them
nervous,” Mogel says. So the antidote to
assuming the worst is to spend time seeing the
world as your child does — at any age. “Babies
are mesmerized by lights. As a parent, you see
lights in a new way when you have a baby,” she
says. “. . . With teenagers, you had better have
seen Gangnam Style by now. It’s not a
coincidence that it’s the most-viewed YouTube
video. It’s so inventive, so hilarious, and so
delightful.” Children give us the chance to see
the world as a less hostile place, but we have to
open our eyes to those possibilities.
3. You don’t want to be your child’s best friend.
This idea never would have occurred to our
parents, Mogel points out, noting that our
parents may have struggled to correctly answer
what grade we were in. Today, many parents can
recite their children’s class schedule, teachers’
names and grades by heart. “We take their
emotional temperature all the time, and if they’re
unhappy, we’re unhappy,” she says. Mogel
warns that we take our children’s lives too
personally, in a way that isn’t healthy for them or
for us.
4. Get outside. Want to engage in quality time
with your child? Take a hike — together as a
family, even if it’s cold out. Mogel is a big fan of
Richard Louv’s “Last Child in the Woods”, a book
about the power of using our five senses in a
three-dimensional world that cannot be
experienced on a tablet or in front of a widescreen
TV. It’s also a wonderful way to see the
world through your children’s eyes.
5. Find another neglectful parent. Finally,
support on this journey is critical. So Mogel
advises finding “another somewhat neglectful
parent; a person who refuses to overprotect,
overindulge and over schedule” their child.
On her Web site, Mogel has created a 13-step
program called Overparenting Anonymous. It’s
wise and witty and the concept of having a
“sponsor” is empowering. After all, neglectful
parents of the world must unite!
Tracy has lots of good advice in her weekly
column and it is well worth the read. Just google
Tracy Grant The Washington Post. I have also
attached a very good article by Australian social
researcher Michael McQueen (featured on page
‣ SECONDARY CROSS COUNTRY 2013:
The track was clear of debris thanks to Miss Smith
and her hard working Year 12 SLR students, mud
and water free thanks to Mr Smith and his Year 9
Agriculture students who built a bridge and got
over it and accurately measured by Mr Kershaw
and his bush walkers. Checkpoints were manned
and womaned by the teachers who were dressed
in house colours and armed with rubber snakes.
Even Helga made an appearance, always a vision
in blue, along with Princess Pamela and Miss
Wentworth who set up camp surrounded by
green and yellow paraphernalia of all
descriptions.
Even under the sweltering conditions the front
runners gave it their best shot and some excellent
times were recorded. First back was Gabrielle
Keaton, one of our oldest competitors, whose
past appearances in the race have given her some
international exposure. Other commendable
times were recorded by Mr Seal and Mr Holt, the
Geographer not the Mathematician.
According to my sources some runners were too
impatient to cross the Brent Smith Bridge at the
water hole and they tried to walk on water. Caleb
Grimshaw tested the depth and still hasn’t
touched the bottom.
Leeches and snakes, of the rubber variety, also
proved a slight distraction.
The last to finish were again some of the oldest.
Mr Horton and Mrs Cunich “swept” the course to
ensure that there were no students stranded in
the bush. Apparently some students managed to
avoid the eyes of our teachers as they wandered
in late and exhausted.
The Age Champions are:
12 Yrs Mary Bramston Runners-up Chloe Pringle, Zayden Lyons, Jayden Helm
13 Yrs Tiarn Keys Runners-up Tyler Warren, Josh Dallas, Klayton Haynes
14 Yrs Rachel Rae Runners-up Tara Price, Emily Legge, Dylan Tooze, Damian Barry
15 Yrs Chloe Lamborn Runners-up Hannah Rietveld, Kyle Shultz, Ashley Grimshaw
16 Yrs Ellie Gooch Runners-up Eryn Keen, Harry Reid, Jordan Tooze
17 Yrs Gabby Keaton Runners-up Katrina Mason, Dylan Bowden, Cohen Morante
The winning house on the day was Melba. It seems as though Helga and her love of all things blue will
always spur on her loyal students to greatness.
M
Well done Melba and Helga.
‣ BCS DEPUTY PRINCIPAL:
As we return from our Easter break, I hope
everyone had an enjoyable Easter and did not eat
too many chocolates.
Our senior students were busy raising money in
the week before Easter for the Starlight
Foundation. They are to be congratulated on
their efforts and have raised almost $500 for this
wonderful charity. Our Year 12’s were selling
Easter eggs and Hot Cross buns to raise money
for their farewell. Congratulations to those
students and teachers who organised these
events.
This term we have had a strong focus on
encouraging students to aspire to our core values
of Participation, Respect, Innovation,
Determination and Excellence. Every week
during reading groups students have been
discussing these values and exploring how they
might be able to demonstrate these whilst at
school.
Also last week all students across the school
spent one period focussing on how to actively
prevent bullying by being an active bystander as
part of the national anti bullying day.
From the feedback around the school it was clear
that the issue of bullying and how to prevent it
sparked some lively discussion in the classes. The
staff are currently pursuing strategies to follow
up on the day, including carrying out a survey of
students with a goal of identifying bullying
around the school and strategies that help to
prevent bullying.
A number of excursions and sporting activities
occurred last week including our annual bus trip
to the show by TAS students. We also had
secondary students involved in soccer and rugby
games. A full report on these activities will appear
in the next newsletter.
Finally as we approach the end of the term I
would like to encourage parents and members of
the community to attend our combined ANZAC
and end of term Merit Assembly on Thursday 11 th
April in the school gym commencing at 10:30am.
It is an opportunity for students to commemorate
our returned servicemen and to celebrate the
excellent achievements of our students in a
variety of school activities. It will also serve as a
chance to farewell our two international
exchange students, Julie Abildgaard from
Denmark and Lena Dell’Aquila from France. Both
these students have been hosted by students and
their families from our school since July last year.
They have been excellent ambassadors for their
countries and have contributed to the cultural
and academic life of our school.
Congratulations to the winners of the P&C Easter
Egg Raffle.
‣ BCS DEPUTY PRI. PRINCIPAL:
I trust you didn’t over indulge in
chocolate over Easter and that you had a
peaceful and restful Easter holiday.
The “Careers Through Reading” program has
concluded for another year. All Year 1&2
students were presented with a book, last week,
in recognition of their participation in the
program. Year 5&10 students, who participated
in the program, were presented with a certificate.
I would like to thank our community guest
speaker, Anthony Smith, for coming in and talking
to the students about his career as a policeman.
We now have many students who want a career
as a policeman when they grow up. The day
concluded with a delicious morning tea. Our next
event, in partnership with the University of
Newcastle, is “Discover Uni Day” for Year 6
students and their families, in June.
Our 8 Year 6 leaders attended “Young Leaders
Day” in Sydney last week. They enjoyed the
opportunity to listen to 5 motivational speakers,
including Olympian Jess Fox and footballer
Nathan Hindmarsh. This annual event is part of
our transition to high school program allowing
leaders from Booral, Tea Gardens and Bulahdelah
to get to know each other.
The Zone X-Country carnival will be held, this
Friday, at Lakeside Sporting Complex, Raymond
Terrace. We have a team of approx 45 students
attending. Good luck to all students who will be
participating on Friday. Participate and do your
best!
The Easter Hat Parade delivered again. Parents,
grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends turned
out in force to view the visual smorgasbord which
was the hat parade. The creativity of hats was
astounding and I would like to thank parents for
your support. The students love the parade and
they love having you there to share in their
excitement. Thank you! We will feature a full
article and pictures in the next newsletter in Term
2. A real highlight was the skipping performance
of the Yr 5 “Skipaloonies,” under the tuition of
Mrs Fenning and Mrs Murrell. They were a
pleasure to watch. Congratulations to the
winners of the raffle and thanks to the P&C for
organising the raffle.
Stage 3 students have their reward day this
Thursday. Students who have lived by the values
of participation, respect, innovation,
determination and excellence are eligible to
attend. The day will conclude with a disco for
students K-6. Again, students who have lived by
the school’s 5 core values are welcome to attend.
Mr Backhouse returns from Long Service Leave
on Monday 8 th April. I would like to thank Mrs
Murrell for replacing Mr Backhouse during his
leave. She has done a fantastic job and we really
appreciate the work she has done.
Only two weeks to go before the holidays. Have a
relaxing break and I look forward to working with
the students, parents and staff in Term 2.
brightly coloured t-shirt and
bought a cupcake. We would also
like to thank the primary students
