‣ VALUE OF THE WEEK
Participation. We promote
participation & school spirit in an
environment that values the
participation of students, staff & the
wider community. Are you actively
involved in the life of the school?
‣ PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
The Record of School
Achievement (RoSA)
The ROSA is the new credential
for students who leave school
after Year 10 and before they
receive their Higher School
Certificate (HSC). In the past
students would have received a
School Certificate at the end of Year 10
and a Preliminary HSC at the end of Year 11.
The RoSA is designed to record and credential all
secondary school students’ academic results up
until the HSC. If a student gains the HSC they
won’t be issued with a ROSA as the ROSA is only
intended for those students who leave before the
end of Year 12.
While all students currently receive grades for
courses they complete at the end of Year 10, this
system will be extended to also capture grades
for courses a student completes in Year 11.
If a student leaves school before receiving a grade
in their Year 11 or 12 courses, their RoSA will
record these courses as commenced. This
measure acknowledges the fact that many
students begin senior secondary study but leave
school for employment or other training
opportunities before receiving their HSC.
The Board of Studies (BOS) has developed a
process to ensure the moderation and monitoring
of grades issued by schools which will help ensure
that parents and employers know that a grade
awarded in one school is equivalent to the same
grade awarded in another school.
Students who leave school before they get their
HSC will have the option to undertake on-line
literacy and numeracy tests of about 60 minutes
duration for each test. These will be completed
under teacher supervision and will be reported
separately to the RoSA credential. The tests will
not be available to all students, only those who
indicate they wish to leave school and will be
designed to reflect the needs and expectations of
students who leave school before undertaking
the HSC.
The Board is also looking at a pilot on-line
program for students to record any extracurricular
activities (SRC involvement, First Aid
courses, etc.) and provide evidence of these
activities which will assist employers who are
interested in more than just a student’s academic
results.
The current academic requirements are still in
place for students to complete their Year 10 and
11 courses. For a student to satisfactorily
complete a course, the Board of Studies requires
the principal to have sufficient evidence that the
student has:
(a) followed the course developed or
endorsed by the Board; and
(b) applied him/herself with diligence and
sustained effort to the set tasks and
experiences provided in the course by the
school; and
(c) achieved some or all of the course
outcomes.
Where students have not met one or more of
these requirements by the end of the course, the
Principal is required to inform the Board that the
student has not satisfactorily completed the
course and they will be issued with an ‘N Award’
for that particular course. An ‘N Award’ may
mean the student will not be able to gain a HSC
because they haven’t met the requirements for
Year 10 or 11 which are a pre-requisite for the
HSC.
More information on the RoSA can be found on
the Board of Studies web site,
www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au
‣ BCS DEPUTY PRINCIPAL:
The major works and
performances for the HSC
courses will be presented to
examiners over the next two
weeks. Year 12 will also be
finishing their courses and
preparing to revise for their
final exams in October. This can
be a very stressful time for our
Year 12 students and it is important they are
supported through this time and keep themselves
healthy and maintain full attendance at school.
The school will be meeting regularly with the
students to keep them informed and to counsel
them about post school options, including
university entrance deadlines. The final day for
Year 12 school attendance before they
commence their exams is Thursday 20 th
September, when the Year 12 Graduation Day
Assembly will be held.
On Monday last week our students were shown a
Motivational Media presentation about risk
taking and the serious consequences of taking
risks and this week our Year 8 students will be
involved in a workshop about Body Image and
self esteem. These are important educational
activities which address some of the key concerns
relating to our young people and hopefully
produce positive behaviours amongst our
students in the future. Thank you to Mrs Gilbert
and the Welfare team for their efforts in
organising these activities.
A reminder to students, that BCS takes pride in
being a uniform wearing school. I am currently
having particular issues with an array of multi
coloured jumpers rather than our navy blue
jumpers. Could parents please check that their
children are leaving home in the correct school
uniform.
Congratulations to our State Athletics
representatives who, no doubt inspired by the
Olympics, produced some outstanding
performances at the regional carnival to qualify
for State. A number of these students have been
training all year with the Little Athletics group in
Tea Gardens and it is a credit to themselves and
their coaches that they have reached this elite
level.
‣ BCS PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL:
Mrs Thompson has taken leave for a week and
while she has been away I have taken on her role.
Ms Mostyn has capably taken over my role as Y6
teacher for the week and I am sure she has
enjoyed being reunited with this group.
Congratulations to our debaters who won their
recent debate with Tea Gardens at Tea Gardens.
Well done Tim Smith, Savannah Williams, Isabella
Francis-Nieswandt and Mary Joy Bramston.
The Department has a set of CORE RULES that
outline behaviours expected in NSW Government
schools. They are as follows:-
All students in NSW Government schools are
expected to:
Attend every school day, unless they are
legally excused, and be in class on time
and prepared to learn.

Maintain a neat appearance, including
adhering to the requirements of the
school’s uniform or dress code policy.
Behave safely, considerately and
responsibly, including when travelling
to and from school.

Show respect at all times for teachers,
other school staff and helpers, including
following class rules, speaking courteously
and cooperating with instructions and
learning activities.
Treat one another with dignity and
respect.
Care for property belonging to
themselves, the school and others.
Behaviour that infringes on the safety of others,
such as harassment, bullying and illegal or antisocial
behaviour of any kind, will not be tolerated.
It is worth reflecting on these core rules and
thinking about them in the context of ‘Risk Taking
Behaviours’, ‘Courtesy’, ‘Swearing and Bullying’.
While the large majority of our students fulfill the
requirements of DEC’s Core Rules, there are some
who need to be reminded of their obligations to
themselves, their peers and the school. These
rules are a valuable starting point when
discussing inappropriate behaviours.
Our Zone representatives have had a difficult
time as both the field and track events have been
postponed due to the weather. The venue was
changed to Tomaree and was set down for
Monday, 20 th and Tuesday 21 st August. We hope
that the students did their best on the day.
in our communities, with benefits not just for the
recipient but for the volunteer as well. We are
confident that these students have gained much
personal satisfaction and an increased sense of
pride since becoming involved in the program
and contributing to their communities.
