based on net energy, global amount of amino acids, and feed intake. 

These systems allow accurate comparison of the nutritive value of 

feeds, the formulation of well-balanced rations to achieve production

Equine nutrition provides an update of the nutrient requirements for

successfully tested in the fields. The importance 

of grass intake during summer for the different

preservation of environment. 

The feed tables list 169 roughages and 71 concentrates feeds. Data 

have been derived from digestion trials on horses, carried out at 

INRA and measurements of voluntary intake for most of the forages. 

This book also deals with several distinct pedagogic tools dedicated 

to end-users: ‘equineration’, a guide to ‘body condition scoring in 

horse’ and ‘Equine Rami’ for horse grazing and farming management.

Indirect calorimetry

The use of indirect calorimetry to measure the heat production of 

men and animals has increased rapidly since the pioneering work 

of Lavoisier. Measurement of the consumption of oxygen and

This book presents an analysis of the dairy 

and associated sector developments in Eastern 

Europe and China. The transition in cattle 

husbandry in Eastern Europe, resulting in 

enormous structural changes, but not in an 

increased production volume, is different 

from emerging countries, like China, where 

traditional small scale farming goes together 

with the remodelling or start of mega farms. 

Capacity building by means of cooperation appears to be hindered 

by historical experience. 

Farm development paths were studied in more depth in Poland, 

Lithuania and Slovenia using detailed farmer surveys. Farmers’ 

strategies, availability of resources, and opportunities and threats 

were analysed, and interactive group trainings in strategic 

management were part of the analysis. The results are presented 

here. Although farmers showed similar wishes concerning farm 

development, the local environment and policies determines the 

degree of achievement. Farm fragmentation, the high percentage of 

rented land and availability of suitable labour are major constraints. 

Future EU policies are a concern but new technologies are embraced. 

This book is a must for those interested in the transition in Eastern 

Europe. It is indispensable to consultants, marketers, companies,

Game meat hygiene in focus

Game meat is consumed world-wide. In most 

regions, it contributes only a small part to the 

overall meat and food supply, but for reasons 

of animal welfare and sustainability it is 

sometimes considered an alternative to meat 

from farmed animals. Despite differences in 

game species, ante mortem conditions (freerange 

or fenced; wild or semi-domesticated), 

hunting or harvesting procedures and further 

handling of the carcass, there are common requirements as regards 

meat safety and quality. Whereas meat hygiene and safety have been 

an issue in game meat for export/import for a long time, primary 

production, domestic supply and direct supply to the consumer have 

recently been addressed by legislation and these sectors still present 

unresolved questions and challenges. 

This book combines 24 contributions presenting the view of experts 

in game meat hygiene and quality. They address four main topics: 

i.e. ‘hygiene and microbiology’, ‘epidemiology’, ‘risk assessment and 

management’ and ‘muscle biology and meat quality’. In addition 

to contributions on this topic by authors from eight European 

countries, a South African perspective is provided, thus representing 

the standpoint of a major game meat exporter.

The feed materials included in this publication 

are used both in the formulation of 

compound feeds and as straight feedstuffs 

(concentrates and by-products). 

The values of chemical composition were 

mainly obtained using field data collected 

by AFZ from laboratories specialising in animal feeding (the data 

base includes over one million values). The nutritional values result 

principally from experimental work performed by INRA and its 

partners. 

The data used take into account the evolution in feed materials 

and nutritional concepts. Important characteristics have been 

introduced, namely net energy for pigs (growing pigs and sows), 

amino acid digestibility, mineral availability and starch degradability 

for ruminants. 

In the present context of animal feeding and the new challenges 

that it faces (product quality and safety, animal health and welfare, 

environmental issues), this publication provides a reliable scientific

In the past century, many advances were made in the control of 

vector-borne diseases. Malaria disappeared from the northern 

hemisphere, diseases such as typhus, Bartonella and yellow fever 

were seriously reduced in prevalence and in many countries 

effective methods of disease control contributed to a greatly reduced 

incidence of such diseases. Most of these advances were beneficial 

to the industrialized world, whereas underdeveloped countries 

continued to suffer much as before. Indeed, several diseases such as 

malaria, Rift Valley fever and African sleeping sickness are still highly 

prevalent in specific countries. ‘New’ vector-borne diseases, dengue 

and West Nile fever, have emerged and are invading previously 

disease-free regions. The discovery of new drugs and vaccines has 

made great advances and allows for the effective treatment and 

control of many diseases. In contrast, vector control has lagged 

behind in development, even though it is realized that effective vector 

control would allow for an immediate interruption of the transmission 

of disease, and aid in disease control and eradication. In the last 

20 years new initiatives on vector control have been undertaken, 

leading to a rapid development of effective and lasting methods of 

vector control. The development of molecular genetics has provided 

new insight in vector biology and behaviour, which is being used for 

developing new strategies of vector control. Advances in geographic 

information systems allow for precision targeting of interventions.

Ecology of parasite-vector interactions

Vector-borne diseases continue to be one of the

Rural protest groups and populist

There are a few examples in the Western world in which agricultural 

and rural protest groups have developed into populist political parties 

(Poland, the Netherlands, Finland). This book is the first to explore 

under which conditions this happens, and to what extend populist 

parties do have rural ties and a rural agenda. Well-known authors 

with backgrounds in rural studies or in political sciences describe 

and analyse the situation in a number of countries (United Kingdom,

a large extent the political system and existing political landscape 

determine the opportunity structure for rural protest groups to play 

a role as political party. However, such parties can only survive when 

they enlarge their agenda, away from agriculture and the rural. The 

chances are best for groups with a national and broad rural agenda 

(instead of regional or sectoral). The authors also show that populist 

parties often start with an urban agenda, but that generally they have 

quite some support in rural areas, even more so when they develop an 

explicit rural political agenda.

Coffee certification in East Africa:

Certification of coffee producers is frequently suggested as a 

promising strategy for improving the position of smallholder farmers 

in the market. After the launch of the first Fairtrade label in 1988, 

several other standards have been promoted either by voluntary 

agencies (Utz-certified) or by private coffee companies. Each 

coffee label relies on different strategies for enhancing sustainable 

production and responsible trade. 

Coffee certification in East Africa is of a rather recent nature but 

has been rapidly expanding, representing currently 26 percent of 

the world’s sustainable certified coffee supply. Marketing channels, 

cooperative organisation and household structures show notable 

differences between Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia. Empirical studies 

on the effects of standards for smallholders are scarce. 

This book intends to deepen our understanding on the role and 

functions of coffee certification regimes, based on three innovative 

approaches: (1) longitudinal field survey data capturing changes in 

coffee farming systems and effects on household welfare; (2) in-depth 

interviews and behavioural experiments regarding risk attitudes, 

trust and investments at cooperative level; and (3) detailed discourse 

analyses regarding gender roles and female bargaining power within 

coffee households. The chapters included in this book provide new 

and original evidence about the impact of coffee certification based 

on large-scale field surveys and in-depth interviews.

While the right to adequate food is often 

discussed in the context of developing 

countries, especially in situations where access 

to adequate food is a problem on a larger scale, 

this book focusses on the right to food in two 

Western countries in which theoretically the 

circumstances allow this right to be enjoyed by 

each individual. Through a legal comparative 

study, the enforceability of the right to food 

is compared between the Netherlands and Belgium in light of the 

current UN Human Rights system. There seems to be a difference 

between what the countries do, what they say they do, and what they 

should do on the matter. As it appears, the coincidental constitutional 

circumstances mainly determine the enforceability of the right to 

food, rather than the content of the human right in itself.

of the changing roles of non-governmental 

organizations (NGOs) in promoting 

sustainability of small and medium-sized 

enterprises (SMEs) in Peru. The book focuses 

on the domains of organic production, 

business social responsibility and sustainable 

production. The innovative study uses a 

combination of network and discourse analyses 

to identify the main patterns and shifts in the roles of NGOs in order 

to deal with sustainability and the market. Two major contemporary 

sociological theories – ecological modernization theory and network 

society theory – are applied to frame the analysis. 

The in-depth analysis of international networks of NGOs operating 

in Peru provide valuable inputs in terms of changes in network and 

discourse patterns, and consequently, changing roles for NGOs. 

Remarkably, social movement, liberal market and sustainability 

viewpoints are generating new networks and new discourses, with 

a prominent position of national and international NGOs visà-vis 

SMEs, and in absence of the national state. Next to the usual 

‘watchdog’ roles, NGOs are developing roles of ‘helper’ in order to 

answer to the market needs of SMEs. The analyses challenges Castells 

scheme of space of flows versus space of place and suggests considering 

in ecological modernization theory both ecological rationality and 

social rationality in order to advance environmental governance of 

SMEs in developing countries, particularly in Latin America.

empirical case studies shows the important role of contextual factors 

in understanding and influencing mobility behaviour of citizenconsumers.

Lecturers 

For lecturers considering adopting our book as a course textbook, 

inspection copies are available. Please send us an email with course 

details to request an inspection copy. Inspection copies will be sent 

at our discretion. 

Book suppliers 

For non-European book suppliers we prefer to work through a 

shipper. Special delivery is used only upon request and is paid by the 

customer. A credit account is given at our discretion. 

Payment 

Orders placed from outside the Netherlands must be pre-paid upon 

receipt of a pro-forma invoice or by purchasing directly through our 

online bookshop. Payment is possible either by bank transfer or by 

credit card. Note: Due to high processing costs, cheque payments are
