Pastor’s Page
There are many ways our Lord calls us to service in his church
according to our individual gifts, abilities and interests. While
every form of volunteer service is important, I count no service as
more important than that of teaching the faith to new generations
of Christians. As we approached a new season of Sunday School
we were pleased to see that three of our veteran teachers returned
for another year of teaching, but we realized a need to recruit
several new teachers and helpers to complete our staff. I believe it
is important for parents to be actively involved in their children’s
Christian education in fulfillment of their baptismal promises, so I
proceeded to call parents of children in pre-K through 3 rd grade.
As a result, I recruited four new Sunday School teachers and six
additional helpers and substitute teachers. Every single parent I
asked said “yes” without hesitation and with enthusiasm. It was so
encouraging to find so many parents ready and willing to do their
part in providing their children and all the children of our
congregation with a quality, Bible-based education.
Just as the church relies totally on its members and friends for
financial support through voluntary stewardship, the church also
relies on those who willingly and faithfully give of their time and
abilities in voluntary service to carry out the church’s various
ministries and programs. On the succeeding pages you will read
about upcoming programs for which we need volunteers. The first
is the Work Bee on Saturday, September 29. There will be a
variety of jobs inside and out coordinated by members of the
Property Committee. The more hands at work, the more projects
can be accomplished.
You will read about the Scandinavian breakfast that will be
served on Sunday, October 7. We are grateful to Janet Johnson,
wife of Centennial committee member Dave Johnson, and her
friends who will prepare and cook the breakfast, but we will need a
few additional people in the kitchen to help serve, youth to wait
tables, and people to help with cleanup.
The major event will be the eight Dessert Fellowship Gatherings
held in late October and early November. Our Stewardship committee
has been working hard to make this new approach to our fall stewardship
emphasis a success.

I appeal to you to carefully and thoughtfully read the letter from the
Stewardship Committee inserted in this mailing and consider ways in
which you will give your support. Be looking for signup charts in the
narthex or call the church office to let us know how you will help. Be
part of the action. You will be rewarded by a good feeling and the
appreciation of your fellow members.

Our Centennial celebration got off to a rousing beginning in
June with an outdoor festival and contemporary worship services
with former Emmanuel Pastor Martin Ruge as guest preacher. The
second of three major centennial worship celebrations will take
place on October 7. The service that day will give us a backward
vision as we reflect on how our ancestors who founded this
congregation 100 years ago may have worshiped in their day with
liturgy and hymns of that era. I am grateful that our Bishop,
Thomas Skrenes, will be with us to preach at these historic
services. It is fitting in that he is Norwegian by nationality and
comes out of the Norwegian Lutheran Synod. It will be a good day
to reflect on our heritage.
Emmanuel congregation has produced four pastors who have
gone on to serve ELCA congregations. I am delighted that all four
pastors have accepted our invitation to preach at Emmanuel during
our centennial observance. Rev. Cheryl Johnson of Dover, NJ was
with us on August 25 and delivered a memorable sermon reflecting
on the faith nurturing she received at Emmanuel as well as
experiences in her own ministry. Rev. Al Beyer, who was also
Emmanuel’s first Associate Pastor, will be with us on October 14,
Rev. Myron Deschaine on October 21, and Rev. Grant Quever on
November 11. What a privilege it will be for us to welcome these
fine pastors home and hear what they have to say to us about their
faith journeys and ours, their ministries and ours. Coffee receptions
will be held on these Sundays giving us an opportunity to visit with
our guest pastors. Please mark these dates on your calendar and be
present to join us in celebration. To God be the glory in all that we
do!
Pastor Schoen
The Menominee Valley Conference of the Northern Great Lakes
Synod‐ELCA, will hold their Fall Convention Convention on
Thursday, October 25 at the Northland Village community room,
1025 Pine Beach Rd. in Marinette. There will be a soup &
sandwich supper at 5:00 p.m., worship at 6:00 p.m., and the
annual business meeting at 7:00 p.m. The MVC is comprised of
nine area ELCA congregations plus Northland Lutheran
Retirement Community. Those attending may be voting delegates
representing Emmanuel, or just attend as interested participants.
Please notify Pastor Schoen or Jerry Gentz if you would like to be
delegates.
In other Menominee Valley Conference news, Rev. John Shallow
retired after serving Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Peshtigo
for the past 25 years. Pastor John and Sue are now residing in the
Lena area where John was raised. The congregation has begun
the call process for a new pastor.

Have you noticed the new roof that has been constructed over
the choir room entrance (also an emergency exit)? This will
correct the problem of snow buildup over that corner that has
posed a danger to those using that entrance weekly as well as
snow and ice eroding the steps and landing. Other projects
directed by the Property Committee include covering the original
exterior church windows with white aluminum and calking to
prevent erosion and water seepage into the building, as well as
eliminating the need for painting. Additional rain gutters and
extensions have been installed to keep water away from the
building and eliminate seepage problems. Landscaping projects at
the September 29 th Work Bee will further address this problem.

A Message from our Property Committee . . .
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION HISTORICAL SERVICES
Sunday , October 7 8:00 & 10:00 a.m.
Bishop Thomas Skrenes, Preaching
This is be the next “BIG” event in the celebration of Emmanuel’s
100 th birthday! The day starts with a church breakfast served in the
fellowship hall starting at 7:00am and continuing through 10am.
The menu will be aebleskivers (Danish pancake balls), Lefsa
(Norwegian potato bread), sausage links, jam and applesauce.
Everyone is invited to join in for this historic and festival
breakfast, free of charge. If you would like to have fun making
lefsa under the direction of experienced lefsa makers, please let the
church office know. You will be notified of when this will take
place the week before October 7. We also need people in the kitchen
to help serve, youth to wait tables, and people to help with cleanup.
The worship services will reflect the liturgy and hymns of the early
1900’s. Pastor Schoen will lead the worship. Bishop Skrenes will
proclaim God’s word. All can feel free to dress in period
costumes…but of course not required. This will prove to be an
exciting day as we head towards our second 100 years!

On an entirely different matter, we read in our daily newspapers
that the war in Afghanistan has hit a frightening new mark. We
have lost over 2,000 young men and women in the longest war in
our history. Let us all keep these young soldiers and their families
in our prayers that those still on the front lines may be safe and
return home to their families unharmed. If you have family or
friends stationed in the Middle East, please send us their names
and units. We will pray for them, for they should never be
forgotten.
We were recently notified by our Synod office that full time
seminarians Ann Gonyea-Alexander, David Hendirckson, Tera
Kossow, Mark St. Aubin and Tina St. Aubin each received $254
for the 2012-2013 school year from the Emmanuel Lutheran
Church of Menominee Seminarian Support Fund, administered by
our Synod. Part time seminarians Julie Belew, Bill Tetza, Soren
Schmidt and Diane Srutowski each received $127. In addition,
seminarian Jill Lemke received $63.
In his letter to these students, Bishop Thomas Skrenes wrote,
“I am very proud of the people of our Synod! You are financially
fortunate to be a member of one of our congregations. A high
priority of the Northern Great Lakes Synod is the financial support
of our seminarians. We are committed to assisting you with the
cost of your theological education. Your preparation for ministry
is important to us, and we want to financially support you. All
scholarship money is paid directly to your seminary and will be
applied to your personal tuition obligations.”
Emmanuel members can individually contribute to our Seminarian
Support Fund through special gifts, estate gifts, and the like. For
more information, contact the church office.

Thank you to the families and friends of Helen Langlois and
Donald Johnson for recent memorial gifts in their names to
Emmanuel’s Memorial Fund.

Many thanks to Jeantte Lawton for several years of faithful service to
the church’s custodians by coming in one morning each week to vacuum
the sanctuary, narthex and offices. Jeanette has earned her retirement
from this service. Are there others who would take Jeanette’s place in
this much appreciated service to the church? Please inquire or offer
your services to the church office staff. Thank you.

Church Picnic Reflections . . .
What a wonderful day it was as we celebrated Rally Sunday on
September 9. Emmanuel members, friends and members to be
gathered for food, fellowship and fun on a warm, sunny afternoon in
beautiful Henes Park. The event featured great picnic food (thank you
to all who grilled the meat and those who brought dishes to pass),
music by the Sunroom String Band, horse drawn wagon rides and pony
rides offered by John Trombley and Pat Brukardt, balloon making by a
professional clown, bouncy house and games of all sorts, hair design,
fingernail painting and hand massages provided by Paul Mitchell School,
and more. Many words of thanks are deserved by our hardworking
Fellowship Committee members Jeanne & Pete Anderson and Dorothy
Jozwiak, Rosie & Dennis Draska and all who worked with them.
It was a great way to begin our fall season!
Here is the next fellowship event being planned . . .
OUR MINISTRY OF SERVICE
After several years of dedicated and dynamic leadership, Pat Mertens
has handed over chairmanship of the Service Committee to fellow
committee member Jeff Lenca. We commend Pat for her sensitivity to
the needs of others and her motivation of the committee members to
plan and carry out ministries that reach out, within our congregation
and beyond our congregation to the community and the world with
programs of social ministry. We also thank Jeff for his willingness to
assume leadership. Jeff also serves on our Church Council. All the
members of the committee have a real heart for helping and serving
others. They would like to increase the committee membership with
others who would be interested and willing to share in the good work
they do. Next month’s Messenger will list the seasonal ministries they
are planning.
