SEASON PREVIEW
For any team, the task of equaling past successes
might seem daunting – especially when
they include four-straight ODAC championships
and accompanying NCAA tournament berths.
However, 19th-year Head Coach Jan
Hathorn and her 2007 squad seem to welcome
the challenge of continuing the winning tradition
that has become a trademark of Washington and
Lee women’s lacrosse.
“From top to bottom, there is just a high
level of excitement,” said Hathorn. “The team
really wants to rise to the occasion and carry
the standard of play as high as it has been in the
past. This is their time and they are so excited to
have their shot at it.”
Maintaining previous standards will not be
easy, especially when last season’s team set a
school record for wins (16-4) and went undefeated
in the ODAC. Despite having different strengths and varied personalities, Hathorn believes
that this season’s squad has what it takes to meet expectations.
“We have a lot of returnees with a great deal of experience under their belt,” noted
Hathorn. “There are also some very good freshmen that are eager to grow and become
everyday players and, as a group, they have an inherent belief that the idea of ‘team’ comes
first and matters to our success. The hallmarks of our program have always been working
hard together and playing the way the program demands. If we can keep those ideals in
place, I think we will be successful.”
Hathorn has entrusted her seniors and especially the team captains, to reinforce her
belief in the value of teamwork. Midfielders Maggie Megear and Kelly Evans and attacker
Avery Lovejoy, along with the other three seniors, will set the tone for the season.
“The personality of the seniors is different this year than in years past, and I think that is
a great thing because they understand what is important to the program, but they are going
to lead in a way that reflects their personalities,” she said. “I like the fact that every team has
a different personality and strategy for success. This year’s team will not be as dependent
on a settled offense and defense, but our midfield is going to be better and that will lead to
us being a high-scoring transition team.”
Last year’s settled offense featured the talents of graduated All-ODAC players Amanda
Strickler (26 g, 41 a) and Kate Lester (39 g, 3 a). Their presence will be missed, but Hathorn
is confident that her 2007 squad has plenty of scoring options.
“I think we have the capability to be a high-octane offense again,” she noted. “The
potential is very much there. The players just need to take over the responsibility for the
scoring and live up to the expectations.”
Those expectations can be realized by making use of an offensive lineup that features
great depth and versatility. Hathorn can plug athletes into a number of wing and midfield
positions and much of the scoring will come from the midfield instead of from a settled attack.
Among the players that Hathorn believes will make an impact on offense are all three
captains, fellow seniors Lane Earnest, Mallory Lobisser and Karina Schless, juniors Megan
Slosson and Christine Bender, sophomores Kelsi Robinson, Katie Flippen and Bucknell
transfer Colleen Evans (sister of Kelly Evans) and freshmen Britten Matthews and Meredith
Freeman.
Kelly Evans brings a wealth of experience after having played in 57 of a possible 58
games during her first three seasons. She has scored 93 career points, including 35 last
season (23 g, 12 a).
“I think that Kelly is going to have the senior year that she has always dreamed of,”
mused Hathorn. “She’s definitely ready for a breakout season.”
Lovejoy bounced back from a knee injury that cost her much of the 2005 season to post
29 points on 19 goals and 10 assists and another year removed from the injury should only
help her production.
2
GENERALS LACROSSE
“I think Avery will be one of the keys to our offensive stability,” said Hathorn.
A four-year letterwinner and First Team All-ODAC pick a season ago, Megear will be the
leader of the midfield in 2007. She started all 20 games last spring and tallied a career-best
29 points on 25 goals and four assists.
“Maggie is such a dependable player and she provides great leadership to our team,”
said Hathorn.
Earnest, Lobisser and Schless are all incredibly versatile players that Hathorn believes can
move to the wing or midfield depending on what is called for. Together, the trio accounted for
31 goals and eight assists last season. Freshmen Meredith Freeman and Laura Cavanaugh
could also play at wing or midfield.
Slosson (23 g, 3 a) and Bender (23 g, 9 a) both saw increased roles during their sophomore
seasons and both are expected to increase their playing time and scoring output this
spring.
“Christine and Megan are going to be a key components to our success this year,”
Hathorn stated.
Robinson had a tremendous rookie campaign that saw her finish second on the team in
scoring with 43 points on 24 goals and 19 assists. Flippen (9 g, 4 a) tallied 13 points during
her initial season, while Evans was a freshman starter for a Division I program last season.
Matthews and Freeman are talented first-year players who will add even greater scoring
depth.
“Kelsi is good enough that if I need her to play first home, she can do it,” said Hathorn
in regards to Robinson’s talent. “All of these athletes have experience playing a number of
positions on the field and the great thing is that there are plenty to choose from and all are
interchangeable.”
While Hathorn believes that the team’s success will be determined by the midfield play,
she does have the luxury of returning an experienced defense. The last line of defense is
generally the most important and the Generals claim four solid goalies on the 2007 roster,
including junior First Team All-ODAC pick Sarah Tilbor. A two-year starter, Tilbor will be
pushed by sophomores Ali Hillyard and Erin Coltrera and freshman Eliza Van Beuren.
Hathorn expects Tilbor to be the starter, but she noted that she believes Tilbor and Hillyard
will be “duking it out all season”. Tilbor started all 20 games last season and produced a
6.85 goals-against average and .537 save percentage, while stopping 123 would-be goals.
Hillyard saw action in eight contests, making 15 saves and accumulating a 5.45 GAA and a
.500 save percentage.
“I’ve never had so many goalies before and it’s going to be a challenge,” admitted
Hathorn. “Every good team has solid goaltending and I think we’ve got just that for the next
couple of years.”
Protecting the goalies is an experienced group of defenders led by juniors Kat Michaels,
Allison Gockley and Kelley Zwart. Michaels started all 20 games and earned First Team All-
ODAC honors last season, while Gockley played in all 20 games with 13 starts. Zwart played
in 17 games and possesses maybe the highest upside of all three. The trio will be spelled by
freshmen Laura Cavanaugh, Summer Sterling,
Natalie Herndon and Julia Gotwald.
“I expect Kat to step up and be the leader
of the defense,” said Hathorn. “She’s one of the
toughest athletes I’ve coached in a long time.
Kelly had a phenomenal fall and I cannot wait
to see her play this season -- she’s going to
be a great player. Allison also looks like she
has found her natural stride and is playing with
more confidence.”
With so much experience, depth and talent
– both new and old, Hathorn can’t mask her
anticipation for the season’s start.
“I’m excited to see how this is going to
play out,” she explained. “I think if we keep
everything in its proper place, continue to put
the team first and always strive for excellence,
we are going to be more than fine.”
lacrosse program and has tasted nothing but
success.
Hathorn has directed the program since
its inception in the spring of 1988. Her skill at
developing programs is evidenced by her work
at W&L, which reached pinnacles in 1993, 1998,
2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 with appearances
in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Hathorn's 2006 team set a school record for
wins in a season in posting a 16-4 overall record.
She guided the team to their fourth-straight Old
Dominion Athletic Conference Championship
(eighth overall) and their fourth-consecutive
NCAA Tournament appearance where they
advanced to the second round before falling to eventual National Champion TCNJ.
Hathorn's 2005 team went 15-4 overall, claimed the ODAC Championship and
advanced to the NCAA Tournament where it defeated Amherst College to advance to
the NCAA Quarterfinals.
as she is 262-108 (.708) overall entering the 2007 season.
In the school's first varsity season, Hathorn led the Generals to the semifinals of the
Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. Since then, W&L has posted 16 winning
campaigns in the last 17 years and won ODAC titles in 1992, 1993, 1998, 2001, 2003,
2004, 2005 and 2006. Her 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 squads all won 15 games
or more for the season. Hathorn was named ODAC Coach of the Year in 1992, 1993,
1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006, and she has served on the NCAA Lacrosse
Committee over the years
The same success held true for Hathorn in soccer, where she served as head
coach from 1987-2000. She led W&L
to ODAC regular season titles in 1991
and 1998 and a then-school record
12 wins in 1996. She was named the
ODAC Coach of the Year in women's
soccer in 1988 and 1996.
Before coming to W&L, Hathorn
spent five successful years at Denison
University, where she coached the
lacrosse team to five conference titles.
1984 team finished third in the United
States Women's Lacrosse Association
finished eighth in the NCAA Division
III National Tournament. She was
named the NCAC women's lacrosse
Coach of the Year in 1987.
Hathorn earned a B.A. in physical
education from the State University
of New York at Cortland in 1982 and a
M.A. in physical education from Ohio
State University in 1985. She played
lacrosse and basketball at Cortland.
GENERALS LACROSSE
ABOUT W&L
WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVER-
SITY — a small, private, liberal
arts college, is the ninth oldest
institution of higher education in
America. Founded in 1749, W&L
prides itself on the characteristics
that have earned its reputation as
a place unique and apart in the
national educational scene.
The school’s name comes from
two of America’s great leaders
who saved W&L in times of need.
George Washington saved then
Liberty Hall Academy from financial
ruin in 1796 when he gave the
school its first major endowment
gift—$50,000 worth of James River
Canal stock. The donation—at the
time the largest to any educational
institution—continues today as part of the endowment.
Robert E. Lee saved then Washington College from obscurity after the Civil
War by serving as its innovative president from 1865 until his death in 1870, and
instituting such programs as the School of Law, the nation’s first school of journalism,
and the revered Honor System that continues to play a major role in W&L life.
More than 95 percent of W&L’s full-time faculty members hold doctorate or
other terminal degrees, and all of them are, first and foremost, teachers. And with
an average class size of just 16, W&L students clearly benefit from that expertise.
W&L was ranked 14th in the 2006 U.S. News listing of the nation's top liberal
arts colleges, marking the 18th consecutive year that W&L has been ranked as one
of the top 25 liberal arts colleges in the nation.
W&L also features a highly-ranked School of Law which has been an integral
part of the school since 1866. Approximately 125 students receive Juris Doctor
degrees each year and five Master of Law degrees.
With a student body that represents nearly all 50 states and attracts citizens from
50 other countries, W&L is truly an international institution set in an idyllic college
town. USA Today described it this way: “If you close your eyes and conjure up the
ideal campus—red brick buildings with rows of white columns, a placid commons
beneath the arching branches of ivy-covered trees, a small town of 19th-century
storefronts—you’ve got Washington and Lee.”
Washington and Lee University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color,
religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability or veteran's
status in its educational programs and activities or with regard to employment.
Undergraduate student inquiries should be directed to the Dean of Students, Elrod
University Commons, (540) 458-8751, law student inquiries to the Associate Dean
for Student Services, (540) 458-8022, and employment inquiries to the Director of
Human Resources, Howard House, (540) 458-8920, Washington and Lee University,
