ATHLETICS AT W&L
Washington and Lee University
provides its students with a unique athletic
program that allows them to pursue
athletic excellence without sacrificing their
The result is a strong, diverse program
in which participants are motivated by
their love of the game and their desire to
excel.
Over the years W&L students have
KENNETH P. RUSCIO, UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
Ken Ruscio officially began his duties as
the University's 26th president in July 2006.
Ruscio earned a B.A. in politics from Washington
and Lee in 1976 and earned an M.P.A.
and Ph.D. from Syracuse University's Maxwell
School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 1978
and 1983, respectively.
Ruscio served as a professor of politics,
associate dean of the Williams School of Commerce,
Economics, and Politics, and dean of
freshmen at W&L from 1987 until 2002, when
he became the dean of the Jepson School of
Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond.
Ruscio has also taught at Worcester Polytechnic
Institute and the University of Kansas
and was a postdoctoral research scholar at UCLA. He recently completed his second
term as national president of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership society begun
at W&L in 1914 that now has chapters at over 300 campuses. He has led and served on
dozens of academic, professional and civic committees.
Ruscio is married to the former Kimberley O'Donnell of New York. They have a
son, Matt, age 18.
CHUCK O'CONNELL, INTERIM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
JAN HATHORN, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
The 2008-09 school year will be the second
for Jan Hathorn as Washington and Lee's
Director of Athletics. She is just the seventh
director in the University's history.
Hathorn served as the University's women's
lacrosse coach for 19 seasons and as the
women's soccer coach for 14 seasons. She
had also been an assistant athletic director and
the University's Director of Physical Education
from 2002-07.
Hathorn arrived at W&L in the fall of 1987
and was charged with beginning the school's
women's soccer and lacrosse programs. She
guided the soccer team to a 129-88-9 (.591)
record from 1987-2000 and was named the
ODAC Coach of the Year twice.
In lacrosse, Hathorn turned W&L into one of the nation's elite programs, guiding
the Generals to a 222-93 (.705) record from 1989-07. Her teams produced 17 winning
seasons, nine ODAC titles and eight NCAA Tournament berths, and she was named the
ODAC Coach of the Year nine times, including in each of her final five years. Hathorn's
277 career wins (277-112) rank among the most in the history of collegiate women's
lacrosse.
Before arriving at W&L, Hathorn spent five years at Denison University, where
she coached the lacrosse team to a 55-19 overall record and five conference titles. Her
1985, 1986, and 1987 teams finished eighth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament
and she was named the NCAC Coach of the Year in 1987.
Hathorn earned a B.A. in physical education from the State University of New
York at Cortland in 1982 and a M.A. in physical education from Ohio State University in
1985.
GENERALS BASKETBALL
WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVER-
SITY — a small, private, liberal
arts college, is the ninth oldest
institution of higher education in
America. Founded in 1749, W&L
prides itself on the characteristics
that have earned its reputation as
a place unique and apart in the
national educational scene.
The school’s name comes from
two of America’s great leaders
who saved W&L in times of need.
George Washington saved then
Liberty Hall Academy from financial
ruin in 1796 when he gave the
school its first major endowment
gift—$20,000 worth of James River
Canal stock. The donation—at
the time the largest to any educational institution—continues today as part of the
endowment.
Robert E. Lee saved then Washington College from obscurity after the Civil
War by serving as its innovative president from 1865 until his death in 1870, and
instituting such programs as the School of Law, the nation’s first school of journalism,
and the revered Honor System that continues to play a major role in W&L life.
More than 95 percent of W&L’s full-time faculty members hold doctorate or
other terminal degrees, and all of them are, first and foremost, teachers. And with
an average class size of just 16, W&L students clearly benefit from that expertise.
W&L features a highly-ranked School of Law that has been an integral part of
the school since 1866. Approximately 120 students receive Juris Doctor degrees
each year and five receive Master of Laws.
With a student body that represents nearly all 50 states and attracts citizens from
50 other countries, W&L is truly an international institution set in an idyllic college
town. USA Today described it this way: “If you close your eyes and conjure up the
ideal campus—red brick buildings with rows of white columns, a placid commons
beneath the arching branches of ivy-covered trees, a small town of 19th-century
storefronts—you’ve got Washington and Lee.”
Washington and Lee University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color,
religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability or veteran's
status in its educational programs and activities or with regard to employment.
Undergraduate student inquiries about this policy should be directed to the Dean of
Students Affairs, Elrod University Commons, (540) 458-8751, law student inquiries to
the Associate Dean for Student Services, (540) 458-8533, and employment inquiries
to the Director of Human Resources, Howard House, (540) 458-8920, Washington
and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia 24450-2116.
Washington and lee
ADAM HUTCHINSON, HEAD COACH
Adam Hutchinson is in his sixth season as
the head men's basketball coach at Washington
and Lee. He has notched a 39-85 record with
the Generals, including a 26-25 record over the
past two seasons.
Hutchinson was named the 2008 Old
Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year
after guiding W&L to a 15-11 overall record, its
best mark in nearly two decades. The Generals
also went 11-7 in conference play and earned the
fifth seed for the ODAC Tournament. Hutchinson
also helped mentor Greg Bienemann '08 to First
Team All-ODAC honors for the second-straight
season.
W&L's success last season followed an 11-14 record in 2007-08. The 11 wins were
a seven-game improvement from the season before and helped to elevate the Generals'
program into a winner.
Hutchinson came to Washington and Lee after spending two seasons as the head
coach at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. In those two seasons,
he led the Spartans to a 14-36 overall
record while rebuilding the program.
His initial recruiting class included eight
players, most notably Carson Oren, the
2003 University Athletic Association
Rookie of the Year.
Prior to CWRU, Hutchinson was
the head coach at Stevens Institute of
Technology from 1999-01, compiling a
19-31 overall mark. His second season
resulted in a 12-13 overall record, a
five-game improvement over his first
campaign.
Hutchinson began his collegiate
coaching career in 1994 as an assistant
coach at his alma mater, Amherst College.
In his two seasons with the Lord
Jeffs, he was responsible for recruiting
the school's second all-time leading
scorer in All-American Jamal Wilson
and helping lead the team to the NCAA
Division III Elite Eight.
In 1996, Hutchinson assumed
the role of player and coach with the
Cardiff Clippers of the English National
Basketball League before spending the
1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons as an assistant coach at Emory University.
Originally a walk-on player at Amherst, Hutchinson started two seasons at guard in
leading the Lord Jeffs to the ECAC Tournament each year. He was named team captain
as a senior.
Hutchinson graduated from Amherst in 1993 with a bachelor of arts in African-
American studies and earned his master of science in sport management from the
University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1997. He and his wife, Erin, have two sons,
Jason and Donald.
GENERALS BASKETBALL
Jamie Snyder-Fair, ASSISTANT COACH
Jamie Snyder-Fair is in his first season
as an assistant men's basketball coach at
Washington and Lee.
Snyder-Fair comes to W&L having spent
the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach at
Vassar College.
While at Vassar, Snyder-Fair helped
lead the team to an 18-8 overall record,
tying a school record for wins in a season.
Snyder-Fair was responsible for coordinating
recruiting efforts as well as the implementation
of in-season and off-season workouts.
Prior to his time at Vassar, Snyder-Fair
spent two seasons as an assistant men's basketball coach at Amherst College.
While at Amherst, he helped to oversee a program that boasted a combined
two-year record of 58-6, advanced to two NCAA Division III Final Fours and captured
the 2007 National Championship. Snyder-Fair coached a pair of NABC All-Americans,
including Andrew Olson, the 2007 National Co-Player of the Year.
A 2005 graduate of Colby College with a degree in psychology, Snyder-Fair
was a four-year letterwinner on the men's basketball team.
His duties at W&L include recruiting coordinating, player development and
game preparation.
2008-2009 SEASON OUTLOOK
Responsibility, the Oxford American Dictionary
defines it as; “a thing that one is required to
do as part of a job, role, or legal obligation.” To
Washington and Lee Head Men’s Basketball
Coach Adam Hutchinson, responsibility is what
he preaches and expects from his players on
a daily basis. Following double-digit wins in
consecutive seasons for the first time in over a
decade, including W&L’s first winning season
since ’89-’90, Hutchinson is putting the onus on
his seniors to continue the upward trend and they
seem ready to accept that responsibility.
“This year’s senior class has really been the
backbone of the team since they got here,” he
commented. “They may not have been getting
the accolades the past several years, but they
were the ones leading this team, and getting us
to where we are.”
Hutchinson, entering his sixth season, is comfortable with giving the credit to his seniors,
even if he was named the ODAC Coach of the Year following last season.
“I didn’t change as a coach last year,” he quipped. “I was the same coach last season that I
was when we won three games. The guys that deserve the credit are the seniors, it’s their effort
that should be recognized.”
This year’s senior class has been putting in the work, but largely in a behind-the-scenes
manner; and if they have been the backbone of the team, then it was 2008 graduate Greg
Bienemann that was the face.
A three-time all-conference honoree, Bienemann was an NABC All-District and a D3Hoops.
com All-South Region selection, and was named a finalist for the Jostens Award given annually to
the top player in Division III following last season. Additionally, he left as the sixth-leading scorer
in W&L history with 1,573 points.
Also gone is Femi Kusimo, who played Robin to Greg’s Batman. An outstanding athlete at
6-foot-5 and 218 pounds, Kusimo averaged over 10.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game last
season while shooting .601 from the field.
With the absence of Kusimo and Bienemann this winter, Hutchinson will turn to the leadership
and responsibility of his senior class.
“With Greg and Femi gone, we don’t have that big brother -- that security blanket anymore.
Now we have to get 20 shots a game from somebody else. I am sure that we can do it, but we need
to have guys taking the right shots. We need guys to be able to be responsible enough to know
their roles and execute, and most importantly be responsible for their actions,” said Hutchinson.
“If each guy cuts down one turnover per game, takes one fewer bad shot and improves his game
a little bit, collectively we will be fine. And I’ll tell you, it’s going to be this years’ seniors that make
sure that we do.”
Captains Isaiah Goodman (5-foot-10), Chris McHugh (6-foot-1) and Kirk Jones (6-foot-4),
as well as classmates Ben Heller (6-foot-6), Ryan Owens (6-foot-5) and Craig Sauers (6-foot-3)
have helped to engineer the recent turnaround at W&L and aren’t about to let things go back to
the way they were when they arrived on campus three years ago.
Goodman, McHugh and Jones started all 26 games a year ago and are among eight returning
players who saw action in at least 23 games last season.
Goodman, a two-year starter at point guard, as well as a two-year captain, is back to man
the point again this year after averaging 7.6 points, 1.5 assists and totaling a team-best 36 steals
a year ago.
“Isaiah is the steadying influence on the court,” notes Hutchinson. “He has been tremendous
for us in bringing guys along and he really epitomizes the attitude of this senior class.”
Chris McHugh is the leading returning scorer at 8.8 points per game and one of the teams top
three-point shooters, hitting 40 percent of his three-point attempts (26-65). A smooth shooter that
can play either guard spot, he will be looked to fill some of the scoring void left by the departures
of Bienemann and Kusimo.
6

GENERALS BASKETBALL
“Chris is going to have to do some scoring for us this year,” said Hutchinson. “He has shown
that he can, and now that he has the opportunity we need just a little more out of him.”
Kirk Jones is the final captain -- and is also in position for an outstanding season. At 6-foot-4
and 200 pounds, he will be looked upon to add some muscle to the lineup, while his versatility
will be key. Last season, he averaged 5.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game and had 50 assists
to just 36 turnovers.
“His versatility is going to be big for us," said Hutchinson. "We don’t quite have the size that
we did last year, so his play is going to be key for us this year. He can play several positions and
he is going to have be flexible this year.”
Hutchinson is also expecting big years out of Heller and Owens. Owens appeared in all
26 games last season, logging just under 10 minutes a night and averaging 2.5 points and 2.0
rebounds a game, while Heller saw action in 12 outings and averaged 2.2 points per game after
undergoing offseason shoulder surgery.
“They have potential to be good players.,” Hutchinson said. “If they work on the parts of their
game that need improvement, and take that responsibility, they are going to be able to help us a
great deal this season. I think now that Ben is a year removed from surgery that we can expect
a little more out of him, and I am sure that he is expecting more out of himself.”
Among the juniors returning this season are forwards Zac White and Ben Goetsch. White,
a tall (6-foot-6), athletic forward with a smooth shooting stroke, appeared in 25 games a year
ago and put up 5.5 points per game while playing an average of 13 minutes per game.
“There is not a thing on the basketball court that Zac cannot do,” noted Hutchinson. “He is
capable of doing anything that we ask of him, and we just need to get a measure of consistency
out of him. He has always put the work in and he is right there. I expect him to have a big year
for us. He is so smooth, and he can make things look effortless at times.”
Hutchinson is also looking for a big year out of Goetsch. A 6-foot-5 forward, he shot over 45.6
percent from the floor and averaged 3.5 points and 2.7 rebounds in 12 minutes per game.
“Ben is in better shape this year and looks to have a little more spring in his step,” commented
Hutchinson. “His jump shot looks better and
it just looks as if he is more explosive than
last season. I think that we could see a big
year out of Ben as well.”
Joining Goodman at the point will
be sophomore Jason Cimino (5-foot-10).
Cimino, who played in all 26 games a year
ago and was among the team leaders in assists
(55) and steals (17), is a pass-first point
guard with good quickness, who, similar to
White, needs to find a bit of consistency.
“Jason is in a unique spot. He is a
talented guy, but we need him to be able
to work on the parts of his game that need
improvement and take this opportunity to
learn and grow,” said Hutchinson. “The
seniors that are ahead of him have put him
in a spot to be able to learn from some of
the best and see how to do things the right
way,” points out Hutchinson. “If he can put
in the effort to learn the game, and know not just where he is supposed to go on a given play,
but where everybody is supposed to go, I think he is really going to be able to help us.”
Added to the mix are seven newcomers who are entering a pretty good situation according
to Hutchinson.
“The new guys are coming into the program at a time when we have been a little more
successful,” he said. “They are stepping into a great situation as far as being able to learn how
to do things the right way, and I think that the senior class is going to be able to teach them a lot
and leave them in a good position for the future.”
“The seniors have put us in a great spot and it is up to all of us to take another step this
season. Everyone has to be responsible for their actions whether that be in practice or in games
or wherever -- we do that and we will be fine,” concluded Hutchinson.
W&L BASKETBALL HISTORY
Since the Blue and White first tipped off in
1906, basketball has been one of the most
successful sports at Washington and Lee.
The school has also produced a number
of outstanding players.
The first W&L great on the hardwood
was Harry (Cy) Young who was named to
the Helm Foundation's 1917 All-America
team. Young led the Generals to a perfect
13-0 record that season.
W&L enjoyed numerous winning seasons
over the next decade and a half, but
it wasn't until Young returned as a coach
Jay Handlan
that W&L won a championship. The Generals
won the 1934 Southern Conference
championship with a narrow 30-29 win over Duke. That would prove to the first of
four straight trips to the Southern Conference finals for W&L.
The Blue Comets, as the W&L basketball teams of the late 1930s were called,
brought home a second Southern Conference title in 1937 by beating North Carolina
44-33. The victory avenged losses to the Tar Heels in each of the previous two
championships.
Those teams were led by the All-American duo of Norm Iler and Bob Spessard.
Iler was a three-time All-Southern guard and earned All-America honors in 1936.
Spessard was also a three-time All-Southern basketball player and the high-scoring
center was an All-American in 1937. Spessard was the first player in school history
to reach 1,000 career points.
The W&L teams of the late 1940s and early 1950s didn't win often, but featured
one of the nation's most explosive scorers in Jay Handlan. Handlan finished in the
top 16 in the nation in scoring every year and ended his career with 2,002 points.
At the time he was just the third player in collegiate history to reach 2,000 career
points. Handlan still holds seven school records, including most points in a game
- a 66-point performance against Furman in 1951.
W&L's last years in the Southern Conference came in the late 1950s and provided
W&L with one of its greatest teams. The University decided to abolish the practice of
awarding scholarships in 1954, but honored those that had already been awarded.
The 1956-57 team included five scholarship players who played almost all of the
minutes that year. The team became known as the "Five-Star Generals."
Dom Flora, Lee Marshall, Barry Storick, Frank Hoss and Barclay Smith led
the team to a 20-7 finish, including a loss to West Virginia and its star "Hot Rod"
Hundley in the finals of the Southern Conference tournament. It was the first time
a W&L team won 20 games in a season.
Marshall and Flora were named to numerous all-star teams with Marshall
averaging 22.0 points a game and Flora 19.1.
Flora had one more year left and made it one to remember even though the
Generals finished just 9-16. Flora earned All-America honors averaging 25.4 points
a game. Flora finished his career with 2,310 points, still the school record.
30

GENERALS BASKETBALL
That season was the first of nine straight losing seasons. W&L turned it around
in 1966-67 with a 20-5 record under third-year coach Verne Canfield.
Beginning with the 1966-67 season the Generals won four of five College Athletic
Conference championships. Those teams were led by the duo of Mel Cartwright and
Mike Neer. Cartwright became the first General since Jay Handlan to lead the team
in scoring four straight years. Neer made the most of a three-year career in Lexington
by scoring 1,289 points and grabbing 1,003 rebounds, including a school-record
403 in 1969-70. Cartwright and Neer are the only two players in school history to
reach both 1,000 career points and rebounds.
W&L had established itself as one of the top small college programs in the nation
and the Generals were invited to the first-ever Division III national tournament
in 1975. The Generals went just 15-12 that year, but defeated Navy 54-47 and lost
to Virginia by just a 77-69 count. The Generals were bounced from the tournament
by Glassboro State, the eventual runner-up.
Canfield guided the Generals back to the NCAA tourney just two years later
when the 1976-77 squad set a school-record with 23 wins. W&L, led by first-year
starter Pat Dennis' 21.7 points a game, finished the year ranked 4th in Division III.
Once again the Generals were eliminated in the first round.
The following year Dennis set a school record with his 700 points, averaging 25.0
points a game. W&L finished 22-6 and defeated Jersey City 66-65 in the opening
round of the tourney before losing to Kean 80-64 in the championship game of the
South Atlantic Regional.
W&L's most recent trip to the tourney came in 1979-80 with an unlikely group.
After finishing the regular season with just an 11-13 record, W&L won its third Old
Dominion Athletic Conference championship in four years to qualify for the NCAAs. In
the ODAC tourney W&L beat Emory & Henry 56-50, top-seeded Eastern Mennonite
95-84 and Hampden-Sydney 58-56 on Rob Smitherman's 18-foot jump shot at the
buzzer. W&L was eliminated in the opening round of the NCAA tourney.
W&L's last championship was the ODAC regular season title in 1988-89 when
a group of sophomores led by Chris Jacobs, Mike Holton and Ed Hart were the key
forces. All three of those players finished their careers with over 1,000 points.
GENERALS BASKETBALL
WARNER CENTER
Washington and Lee plays its home basketball games in the 1,500-seat J.W. Warner
Center, a five-story athletic complex completed in 1972. The first game in the new facility
was played before a packed house against the University of Virginia on December 1, 1971
and the building was officially dedicated as the Warner Center on October 21, 1977. The
gymnasium has served as the host site for two NCAA regional basketball tournaments
and one NCAA regional wrestling tournament.
The athletic complex, named for former W&L trustee Jonathan Westervelt Warner
(W&L '40), also features a six-lane swimming pool; team rooms for W&L sports teams; the
Doremus Gymnasium; a fully-equipped weight room and fitness center that was completed
in 2002; an excellent athletic training facility; handball, racquetball and squash courts; a
baseball batting cage; an equipment room and offices for coaches and administrators.
Since beginning play in the Warner Center in 1971-72, the Generals have won
over 60 percent of their home games with a record of 283-183. W&L went a perfect 14-0
