ATHLETICS AT W&L<br />
<strong>Washington</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Lee</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
provides its students with a unique athletic<br />
program that allows them to pursue<br />
athletic excellence without sacrificing their<br />
educational experience.<br />
W&L follows the NCAA Division III<br />
guidelines of awarding financial aid based<br />
only on family need <strong>and</strong> academic merit.<br />
The result is a strong, diverse program<br />
in which participants are motivated by<br />
their love of the game <strong>and</strong> their desire to<br />
excel.<br />
Over the years W&L students have<br />
been impressive on <strong>and</strong> off the playing<br />
fields. A capsule sketch of that success<br />
is listed below:<br />
THE SCHOOL<br />
• Located in historic Lexington, Virginia in the Shen<strong>and</strong>oah Valley<br />
• Founded in 1749 <strong>and</strong> is the ninth oldest college in America<br />
• Has an undergraduate enrollment of 1,775 students <strong>and</strong> a law school with 400<br />
students<br />
• The average class size is just 16 students<br />
• The tuition fee for 2008-09 is $36,525<br />
• The early decision application deadlines are November 15 <strong>and</strong> January 1, <strong>and</strong><br />
the regular application deadline is January 15<br />
THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM<br />
• W&L sponsors 23 varsity sports, 12 for men <strong>and</strong> 11 for women<br />
• All sports compete at the NCAA Division III level <strong>and</strong> the majority of teams compete<br />
in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference<br />
• W&L has won the ODAC Commissioner's Cup for overall excellence in men's <strong>and</strong><br />
women's athletics 12 of the last 14 years<br />
• In 2007-2008, W&L won nearly 70 percent of its contests <strong>and</strong> eight conference<br />
championships<br />
• Eighty-one athletes earned first team all-conference honors last season <strong>and</strong> 19<br />
were named All-Americans<br />
• A total of 219 athletes received Scholar-Athlete Awards for achieving at least a<br />
3.500 grade point average in a term last school year<br />
• Since 1970, W&L has had 27 athletes earn prestigious NCAA Postgraduate<br />
scholarships<br />
• In the last 33 years, W&L has had 46 athletes earn CoSIDA Academic All-America<br />
honors <strong>and</strong> countless others have been named to CoSIDA Academic All-District<br />
teams<br />
THE <strong>BASKETBALL</strong> PROGRAM<br />
• Basketball at W&L dates back to 1906-07 <strong>and</strong> has long been one of the <strong>University</strong>'s<br />
most successful sports. W&L enters the 2008-2009 season with an all-time record<br />
of 1,049-1,060-1<br />
