ATHLETICS AT W&L
Washington and Lee University provides its
students with a unique athletic program that allows
them to pursue athletic excellence without
sacrificing their educational experience.
W&L follows the NCAA Division III guidelines
of awarding financial aid based only on family
need and academic merit. The result is a
strong, diverse program in which participants
are motivated by their love of the game and
their desire to excel.
Over the years W&L students have been
impressive on and off the playing fields. A capsule
sketch of that success is listed below:
THE SCHOOL
• Located in historic Lexington, Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley
• Founded in 1749 and is the ninth oldest college in America
• Has an undergraduate enrollment of 1,760 students and a law school with 400
students
• The average class size is just 16 students
• The tuition fee for 2006-07 is $31,175
• The early decision application deadlines are November 15 and January 1, and
the regular application deadline is January 15
THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM
• W&L sponsors 23 varsity sports, 12 for men and 11 for women
• All sports compete at the NCAA Division III level and the majority of teams compete
in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference
• W&L has won the ODAC Commissioner's Cup for overall excellence in men's and
women's athletics 10 of the last 12 years
• In 2005-2006, W&L won 65 percent of its contests and 10 conference championships
• Seventy-nine athletes earned first team all-conference honors last season and
17 were named All-Americans
• 194 athletes were named to receive Scholar-Athlete Awards for achieving at least
a 3.500 grade point average in a term last school year
• Since 1970, W&L has had 25 athletes earn prestigious NCAA Postgraduate
scholarships
• In the last 25 years, W&L has had 38 athletes earn CoSIDA Academic All
America honors and countless others have been named to CoSIDA Academic
All-District teams
THE W&L SWIMMING PROGRAM
• W&L has had an NCAA All-America swimmer in each of the past 32 seasons,
including senior Michael Ginder and sophomores Paul Crook, Chris Diebold and
Brett Tatman, who garnered honors last year.
• The W&L women's squad has won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference 13-
consecutive years. The Generals have also had seven All-ODAC swimmers in
each of the past three seasons.

The status quo does not interest
Head Coach Joel Shinofield.
After winning three-consecutive
Bluegrass Mountain Conference
Championships and taking home a
14th-place finish at the 2006 NCAA
Division III Men’s Swimming Championships,
one might think that the
Washington and Lee men’s swimming
team has arrived. However,
to Shinofield, there is more that this
program can accomplish – and this
may be the very year it happens, as
this year’s squad has some very high, but realistic goals.
“We want repeat as conference champions,” said the three-time BMC Coach of the Year.
“We want to build on that 14th-place finish at NCAA's and we’d like try to move into the top
10.”
In order to accomplish these goals, Shinofield is counting on several of his returners to
be as consistent as they have been in years past, including senior captain Mike Ginder.
There is a reason Shinofield calls Ginder an “elite swimmer.” Ginder finished second
overall in the 200 freestyle (1:39.36) and fourth in the 200 backstroke in school-record time
(1:49.82) at the 2006 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming Championships, en route to earning
First Team All-America honors.
“I’d like to continue to see Mike be at the top echelon of Division III swimming,” said
Shinofield.
Joining Ginder in Shinofield’s plan to win the BMC Championship for a fourth-straight year
and improve on last year’s finish at the NCAA's are the five other returners who qualified for
nationals in 2006 – juniors Tim McGlaston and Alex Sweet and sophomores Paul Crook, Chris
Diebold and Brett Tatman.
Crook placed 22nd in the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.61), which is the second-fastest time in
W&L history, and 29th in the 200 freestyle. McGlaston finished 22nd in the 50-yard freestyle
to match a season-best time (21.03).
“I hope Tim can repeat as conference champion in his individual events and compete
individually at NCAA again,” remarked Shinofield. “And I’d also like to see Paul return to NCAA
in his individual events and well as in relay events.”
The relay events are an area where the Generals have had plenty of success. Crook,
Diebold, Tatman and Ginder placed sixth in the 800 free relay with a school-record time of
6:48.71, while both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays placed 14th. Additionally, the 400
medley relay team of Tatman, Crook, recent graduate Reed Evans and Sweet earned 15th
place.
Replacing Reed Evans, a three-time all-conference selection, in those relays and in
individual events will be tough, but Shinofield hopes junior Evan Fitzgerald will step up and fill
"the loss of Reed in the butterfly events."
Despite the loss of Evans and school-record holder Clark Barrineau, the Generals return
16 swimmers from last year's team and bring in 11 freshmen. Among the returners are several
swimmers that Shinofield feels have what it takes to make the jump to competing on the national
level, including seniors Dave Croushore and Kevin Hayes.
"Kevin made [NCAA] “B” cuts last year and broke the school record in the 400 IM," Shinofield
explained. "We are hoping that this year he can break through, break multiple school records
and place at the NCAA's. We also expect Dave to continue his success at the conference level
and we hope he can make the jump to being competitive on a national level."
Shinofield will count on the leadership of senior captains Hayes, Ginder and Maxwell
Pike, as well as seniors Ben Accinelli and Croushore, to make sure the team gels and stays
on target.
"We have five great seniors," said Shinofield. "While three of them are captains, I expect
them all to share the role of leading the team and to maintain the great chemistry that we’ve
had the last couple of years."
Assuming that happens and the 2006-07 Generals meet their goals, they will be able to
say they've arrived.

WOMEN'S SEASON PREVIEW
After winning 13-straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships, you wouldn’t
expect much change in the winning formula. However, with the departure of 15-year Head
Coach Kiki Jacobs and the program’s reigns getting handed over to current men’s coach Joel
Shinofield, change is in the air.
Change in this setting may not be such a bad thing, as Shinofield has already won threestraight
conference championships in his three-year career with the Generals and boasts an
all-time record of 19-3.
And, Shinofield wants nothing more than to continue to build on the legacy that Jacobs
created at Washington and Lee.
"I want to continue to have the success in the ODAC that Kiki established," said Shinofield.
"We are aiming to win our 14th consecutive championship this year."
The Generals return six All-ODAC swimmers to the 2006-07 squad, all poised to continue
the tradition that Jacobs established, including 2006 ODAC Rookie of the Year, sophomore
Lindsey Strachan.
“We have a great core of sophomores,” said Shinofield. “They should be able to step up
and fill the vacancies left by the graduating seniors.”
However, it won’t be easy to replace the void left by recent graduate and three-time All-
ODAC performer, Kristine Holda, who’s name is etched in the record books in all five of the
W&L relay records. Luckily, Shinofield also welcomes several freshman into the fold that will
help pick up the slack.
“We have two excellent incoming freshman in Sarah Simpson and Jenna Worsham, who
should contribute immediately, both individually and on relays,” said Shinofeld.
Worsham, a four-year letterwinner on the state championship team at Wesleyan School
in Norcross, Ga., will predominantly swim the breaststroke and individual medley events, while
Simpson will compete in the freestyle events. Shinofied calls Simpson the “heir-apparent” to
Holda and expects her to be competitive immediately.
Combined with the new blood in the program, it will be also up to the upperclassmen to
take ownership of the goals of the team. To do this, Shinofield expects that his two captains,
senior Abbie Sauter and junior Collete Moryan, will set the tone for the season.
“We have excellent leadership in Abbie Sauter and Collete Moryan,” he said. “Not only
are they able leaders, they are very competitive swimmers.”
Sauter, a two-time All-ODAC performer, won the 200 breast at the 2005 ODAC/Atlantic
States Swimming Championships, while Moryan had the second-best time on the team in the
100 fly as a sophomore and placed second in the 100 butterfly at the 2005 ODAC/Atlantic
States Championships as a freshman. Shinofield feels Moryan can make the all-conference
team in those events.
Another swimmer expected to make a splash in the conference is Strachan, the reigning
ODAC Rookie of the Year. She won the 500 free and placed second in both the 100 and 200
back events at the 2006 ODAC/Atlantic States Championship. Strachan’s classmates, Julianne
Miata, Susan Mahoney and Jessica Shaw, will also be key pieces in the bid for W&L’s 14thstraight
ODAC championship. Miata won the 200 butterfly at the 2006 ODAC/Atlantic States
Championships and Mahoney finished second in the 400 IM at the conference championships
as well. Shaw earned a third-place finish in the 200 breast at the 2006 ODAC/Atlantic States
Championships.
As freshmen, Strachan and Miata joined Holda and junior Amy Roberson to set the schoolrecord
in the 200 free relay, while the team of Holda, Strachan, Mahoney and Roberson set
the school-record in the 400 free
relay. Shinofield hopes that the
2006-07 team will continue to
edit the W&L record book.
“Our goal is to break all five
school relay records this year,”
he said. "And, also we want to
see some of our swimmers make
the NCAA's."
And with goals like that, it's
clear that a coaching change,
doesn't mean the program's
goals are altered in the least.

JOEL SHINOFIELD, HEAD COACH
Joel Shinofield is in his fouth season as
head men’s swimming coach and first season
as interim head women's coach at W&L.
In his first three seasons, Shinofield has
guided the Generals to a 19-3 overall mark and
three-straight Bluegrass Mountain Conference
Championships. Additionally, he has guided W&L
to a pair of Top 20 finishes at the NCAA Division
III Swimming & Diving Championships, while also
coaching 19 Generals to multiple All-Bluegrass
Mountain Conference honors and eight W&L
swimmers to multiple All-America accolades.
In addition, W&L set three new school
records during the 2003-04 campaign, five
records during the 2004-05 campaign and five
more in 2005-06.
Shinofield came to W&L from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., where he served
as the head women's water polo coach. He also served as the executive director/head
coach of the Richfield Swim Club/Minnesota Federated Swimming since 1996. In addition,
he also held the post of volunteer assistant women's swimming coach at the University
of Minnesota.
In one season at Macalester, Shinofield earned region coach of the year honors while
leading the Scots' women's water polo team to a sixth place finish at the Collegiate III
National Championships.
At the Richfield Swim Club, Shinofield was responsible for developing a competitive
USA swimming team for youth from the novice to national level. He helped direct
15 swimmers to national-level competitions and increased club membership from 35 to
over 150 members.
A volunteer assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Minnesota, Shinofield
aided the Gophers' breaststrokers and butterflyers to the 2002 and 2003 NCAA Division
I finals.
Active in the sport, Shinofield has also held head-coaching positions with Team Minnesota
and Minneapolis Washburn High School. He currently serves as Secretary of the
College Swimming Coaches Association of America's Executive Board. Prior to moving
to Lexington, he was the President of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Swimming
Coaches Association and was a member of the board for Minnesota Swimming, Inc. In
the summer of 2003, Shinofield was presented with the Conoco/Phillips USA Swimming
Service Award for his volunteer work in the sport.
Shinofield is a 1994 graduate of Washington and Lee with a bachelor of arts in
biology. He lettered for the Generals' swimming team as a freshman before his career
ended prematurely due to injury.

KELLI AUSTIN, ASSISTANT COACH
Kelli Austin is in her first season as an assistant
coach for both the men's and women's
swimming teams.
A 2003 Washington and Lee graduate
with a degree in sociology and anthropology,
Austin returns to the Generals after serving as
the assistant director of development at the La
Lumiere School in LaPorte, Ind., since July.
Previously, she had been the assistant director
of admissions and head swimming coach at St.
Margaret's School in Tappahannock, Va.
Austin was a four-year letterwinner for the
Generals, serving as a team captain during
her senior campaign. A four-time First Team
All-ODAC honoree, she was part of the 800-free
relay team that set a school record during the
2003 season. Austin also served as a work study in the athletic department during her
four years in Lexington.

THE CY TWOMBLY POOL
Headquarters for the Washington and Lee aquatics program is the impressive
Cy Twombly Memorial Pool, located in the spacious J. W. Warner Center.
The Twombly Pool, overlooked by a 500-seat gallery, measures 25 yards in
length and features six regulation lanes and a computerized electronic timing system

W&L swimmers enjoy a comfortable locker room just off the pool deck that
includes a television, video analysis equipment and a lounge area.
The pool's first competition was the 1972 NCAA Men's College Division Swimming
and Diving Championships. The pool also served as the site for the 1982
NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships. In the past, the facility has
served as host to the Atlantic States Swimming Championships, as well as the Old
Dominion Athletic Conference Swimming Championships.

KEN RUSCIO, UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
Ken Ruscio officially began his duties as
the University's 26th president in July 2006.
Ruscio earned a B.A. in politics from Washington
and Lee in 1976 and earned an M.P.A.
and Ph.D. from Syracuse University's Maxwell
School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 1978
and 1983, respectively.
Ruscio served as a professor of politics,
associate dean of the Williams School of Commerce,
Economics, and Politics, and dean of
freshmen at W&L from 1987 until 2002, when
he became the dean of the Jepson School of
Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond.
Ruscio has also taught at Worcester Polytechnic
Institute and Kansas University and was
a postdoctoral research scholar at UCLA. He recently completed his second term as
national president of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership society begun at W&L
in 1914 that now has chapters at over 300 campuses. He has led and served on dozens
of academic, professional and civic committees.
Ruscio is married to the former Kimberley O'Donnell of New York. They have a
son, Matt, age 16.
CHUCK O'CONNELL, INTERIM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Chuck O’Connell will serve the 2006-07
school year as Interim Director of Athletics at
Washington and Lee, becoming just the sixth
athletic director in the school’s history.
O’Connell arrived at W&L in 1973 as assistant
professor of physical education, assistant
lacrosse and assistant football coach. He
was named assistant athletic director in 1983,
overseeing the department’s finances, facilities
and operations. In 1991, he became the director
of physical education and in 2002, he was
promoted to senior assistant athletic director.
As assistant football coach from 1973-90,
including 13 seasons as defensive coordinator,
O’Connell helped guide the Generals to ODAC
Championships in 1981 and 1985, while mentoring
16 players to First Team All-Conference honors.
As assistant lacrosse coach from 1974-83, O’Connell helped steer the Generals
to six NCAA Division I Tournament berths and 36 players earned USILA Division I All-
America honors during his 10 seasons.
Prior to his arrival at W&L, O’Connell served as instructor and assistant football
and assistant lacrosse coach at Friends School (1965-67) and St. Paul’s School (1967-
73), both located in his native Baltimore.
A 1965 graduate of Denison University, O’Connell was inducted into the school’s
athletic hall of fame in 1985 following a stellar playing career with the Big Red. A twotime
lacrosse All-American, he is also a member of the Ohio Lacrosse Hall of Fame and
the Maryland Lacrosse Club Hall of Fame.
Active on the national stage, O’Connell is a member of the Division III Athletics
Administration Association, the National Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and
is the past president of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA)
and US Lacrosse Coaches Association.

ABOUT W&L
WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVER-
SITY — a small, private, liberal

two of America’s great leaders
who saved W&L in times of need.
George Washington saved then
Liberty Hall Academy from financial
ruin in 1796 when he gave the
school its first major endowment
gift—$50,000 worth of James River
Canal stock. The donation—at the
time the largest to any educational
institution—continues today as part of the endowment.
Robert E. Lee saved then Washington College from obscurity after the Civil
War by serving as its innovative president from 1865 until his death in 1870, and
instituting such programs as the School of Law, the nation’s first school of journalism,
and the revered Honor System that continues to play a major role in W&L life.
More than 95 percent of W&L’s full-time faculty members hold doctorate or
other terminal degrees, and all of them are, first and foremost, teachers. And with
an average class size of just 16, W&L students clearly benefit from that expertise.
W&L was ranked 13th in the 2005 U.S. News listing of the nation's top liberal
arts colleges, marking the 17th consecutive year that W&L has been ranked as one
of the top 25 liberal arts colleges in the nation.
W&L also features a highly-ranked School of Law that has been an integral part
of the school since 1866. Approximately 120 students receive Juris Doctor degrees
each year and five Master of Laws.
With a student body that represents nearly all 50 states and attracts citizens from
50 other countries, W&L is truly an international institution set in an idyllic college
town. USA Today described it this way: “If you close your eyes and conjure up the
ideal campus—red brick buildings with rows of white columns, a placid commons
