ATHLETICS AT W&L<br />
<strong>Washington</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Lee</strong> University provides its<br />
students with a unique athletic program that allows<br />
them to pursue athletic excellence without<br />
sacrificing their educational experience.<br />
W&L follows the NCAA Division III guidelines<br />
of awarding financial aid based only on family<br />
need <strong>and</strong> academic merit. The result is a<br />
strong, diverse program in which participants<br />
are motivated by their love of the game <strong>and</strong><br />
their desire to excel.<br />
Over the years W&L students have been<br />
impressive on <strong>and</strong> off the playing fields. A capsule<br />
sketch of that success is listed below:<br />
THE SCHOOL<br />
• Located in historic Lexington, Virginia in the Shen<strong>and</strong>oah Valley<br />
• Founded in 1749 <strong>and</strong> is the ninth oldest college in America<br />
• Has an undergraduate enrollment of 1,760 students <strong>and</strong> a law school with 400<br />
students<br />
• The average class size is just 16 students<br />
• The tuition fee for <strong>2006</strong>-<strong>07</strong> is $31,175<br />
• The early decision application deadlines are November 15 <strong>and</strong> January 1, <strong>and</strong><br />
the regular application deadline is January 15<br />
THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM<br />
• W&L sponsors 23 varsity sports, 12 for men <strong>and</strong> 11 for women<br />
• All sports compete at the NCAA Division III level <strong>and</strong> the majority of teams compete<br />
in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference<br />
• W&L has won the ODAC Commissioner's Cup for overall excellence in men's <strong>and</strong><br />
women's athletics 10 of the last 12 years<br />
• In 2005-<strong>2006</strong>, W&L won 65 percent of its contests <strong>and</strong> 10 conference championships<br />
• Seventy-nine athletes earned first team all-conference honors last season <strong>and</strong><br />
17 were named All-Americans<br />
• 194 athletes were named to receive Scholar-Athlete Awards for achieving at least<br />
a 3.500 grade point average in a term last school year<br />
• Since 1970, W&L has had 25 athletes earn prestigious NCAA Postgraduate<br />
scholarships<br />
• In the last 25 years, W&L has had 38 athletes earn CoSIDA Academic All<br />
America honors <strong>and</strong> countless others have been named to CoSIDA Academic<br />
All-District teams<br />
THE W&L SWIMMING PROGRAM<br />
• W&L has had an NCAA All-America swimmer in each of the past 32 seasons,<br />
including senior Michael Ginder <strong>and</strong> sophomores Paul Crook, Chris Diebold <strong>and</strong><br />
Brett Tatman, who garnered honors last year.<br />
• The W&L women's squad has won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference 13-<br />
consecutive years. The Generals have also had seven All-ODAC swimmers in<br />
each of the past three seasons.
