The Ruthinian 21 Developments Over the year the proposal to restructure the School, first outlined in the previous year, was developed with its division into three – a Pre-Prep (Foundation and Year 1), Prep School from Year 2 to the end of Year 8, and the Senior School. The management structure changed in line with this, a Head of each school (Mrs Rowlands, Mrs Ellison and Mr Welsby respectively) having responsibility for their section. The overall responsibility for the whole school lay with the Principal (Mr Rowlands) with the Vice-Principal (Mr Belfield) having responsibility for the day to day management of the combined schools. Over the summer break a great deal of work had been undertaken creating Ellis House in the area formerly occupied by the English department. The former indoor games room became a conference centre with facilities for showing presentations, holding meetings, examinations and for boarders to watch movies. The Sixth-form centre - used 7 days a week Conference Room former Sixth-form study room, common room and RSA shop were transformed into a much improved Sixth-form centre with internet access and a new social area. There were also considerable room changes: the Music Department moved to the ground floor, its previous area being taken over by the increasing boarding numbers; the Art room became two more classrooms and moved into part of the Prep School. Further classroom space was provided by temporary buildings in the vicinity of Orchard House which became boarding accommodation for a small number of Year 13 students who would enjoy a little extra independence in a halfway house situation in preparation for university. This significant upheaval was undertaken with a positive attitude by all and despite significant teething problems and changes the new structure began to settle down. All the developments were explained before and during the year to parents via the Parents’ Forum chaired by the Chair of the RSA, Dr Tracey Kerrigan. Beyond the classroom Games Given the changes the School has undergone, the problems of getting fixtures with local schools and the time available, it has not been possible to organise the level of fixtures seen in the past. The situation was exacerbated in the Spring term by the seemingly never-ending covering of snow. There were opportunities in a number of sports and the School continued to perform well in Rugby against local rivals King’s Chester, albeit playing 10-a-side. The School moved to a first half lead of 32-0 with tries from Oliver Collinge (2), Joseph Kim, Joseph Howard, and Raphael Huissoud. The second half was much closer with King’s scoring two tries to one (Troy Taylor) mainly due to some significant team substitutions
