Dietary Fibre 35
Observational study: Study in which researchers do not
intervene but only observe outcomes of interest and
their suspected causes, e.g. case-control study and
prospective study. Observational studies are often
loosely referred to as epidemiological studies.
Postprandial: Occurring after a meal.
Prebiotic: Non-digestible food components that benefit
the host by selectively stimulating the growth or
activity of beneficial bacteria (mostly lactic bacteria
such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli) in the colon.
Quintile: One fifth of a distribution of a certain
parameter.
Risk: In epidemiology it usually refers to the
probability or chance of meeting a certain – generally
unwanted – event. In toxicology it typically expresses
both the probability and the severity of a certain
unwanted event.
Satiation: Regulation of energy intake per eating
occasion.
Satiety: Delayed return of appetite following a meal.
Whole grain: Whole grains and foods made from them
consist of the seed usually referred to as the kernel.
The kernel is made of three components: the bran, the
germ and the endosperm. If the kernel is cracked,
crushed, flaked or milled, then in order to be called
whole grain, it must retain nearly the same
proportions of bran, germ and endosperm as the
original grain.
