Sr. Mary Bellarmine Bernas, OSB
Facilitator
Sr. Mary Bellarmine was born and grew up among twelve children in
Baao, Cams. Sur. There she completed her basic education in a school of the
Augustinian Sisters that was founded by her grandaunt, an Augustinian Sister. For
college, she came to St. Scholastica’s College where an older sister was studying.
In the later years of her religious life when Sr. Bellarmine was wishing that she
could study Prayer and Spirituality, she commented that her studies and
professional work had all been too “secular”. At St. Scholastica she obtained a
degree in Bachelor of Arts, major in Chemistry. After joining the Missionary
Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing right after graduation, she took up Elementary
Education. This was followed by masteral studies in Educational Administration at
the Ateneo de Manila University. Soon after she left for Stanford University and
obtained an M.A. in Sociology and a Ph. D. in International Development
Education. She was president of St. Scholastica’s College for eleven years.
During her first sabbatical time Sr. Bellarmine had the inspiration to
volunteer for the missions of the Benedictine Sisters. She was sent to Tanzania,
East Africa where she started the Secondary School for Sisters in Mtwara. There
she decided to spend the rest of her life facilitating seminar-workshops on prayer,
especially Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina. She got a boost for her wish during
a retreat with the famous Cistercian Basil Pennington, OCSO, in Nairobi, Kenya.
Fr. Basil sponsored her attendance in Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina
workshops in the United States and her stay with the Benedictines of Beech
Grove, Indiana for prayer practice.
She returned to the Philippines and happily settled at the St.
Scholastica’s Center of Spirituality. Her dream to put up the St. Benedict Resource
Center became a reality on the centennial (2006) of the arrival of the Missionary
Benedictine Sisters in the Philippines. On her second sabbatical time, Sr.
Bellarmine got her wish to steep herself once more in monastic prayer with the
Benedictines of Yankton and got a tutorial in Spiritual direction. At last she could
say that her studies and ministry could be more than just “secular”.
As theologians and teachers, lay missionaries and parish
workers serving the Church, you are invited to understand the
meaning of the “new” in the evangelizing mission of the Church today.
This means taking stock of the different sectors in our world - society,
economy, culture, science and technology, civic life and religion- which
call for an urgent new evangelization, especially in the light of the
urgent call to evangelize new media and use it to spread of Good News.
This also means committing yourselves afresh to making Jesus
Christ known and loved in our world through your life and work in
Christian formation today .
Workshop: By means of lectures, bible references, discussion of the
texts on the New Evangelization and media you shall be guided to
acquire both knowledge and skill in approaching the ministry of
proclaiming the center of our faith – Jesus Christ in the midst of a
media culture.
Highlights: Meaning of the “New Evangelization, Challenge of
