5 GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS The strength of the Chester County Community Foundation is in its power to change peoples’ lives. Each year, hundreds of organizations—and thousands of people—are touched through the generosity of our donors. The majority of grant decisions are made by the families and individuals whose funds the Community Foundation holds in trust. The typical grant size averages $4,000. The Community Foundation also grants a modest amount from the Fund for Chester County, based on decisions made by a volunteer Grants Committee. During FY2005, 1,732 donors contributed $3.5 million to the Foundation, increasing our total assets to more than $21.5 million. As a result, $1,109,746 in grants and scholarships were awarded this year to address needs in our community: During FY2005, the Community Foundation proudly awarded grants to these nonprofits. 7 awards OF THE FOUNDATION PHILANTHROPY AWARDS Dr. Henry A. and Barbara M. Jordan Award: Penny Wilson The Community Foundation created the Jordan Award in 1999 to honor the philanthropy of Dr. Henry A. and Barbara M. Jordan of Chester Springs. This award annually honors an individual who has demonstrated a lifetime of exemplary philanthropic leadership. Philanthropic involvement must be broad in scope, leading to significant accomplishments that ultimately make a real difference in improving the quality of life in Chester County. This year, the Jordan Award was bestowed upon Penelope “Penny” Wilson of Malvern, to honor her life-long, far-reaching philanthropy, particularly in historic preservation, arts, culture, health and human services. Her generosity and commitment to the community has impacted too many nonprofits to name them all. Ms. Wilson has been a strong supporter of the Chester County Historical Society, inspiring others to give and helping to create important partnerships. In 1983 Ms. Wilson co-founded Historic Sugartown, and she has served as a member of the Board of Directors ever since. According to co-nominator John Nagy, “At Historic Sugartown she has been a driving force…with untiring devotion to our projects and strict attention to detail and authenticity.” Ms. Wilson has been an active, longstanding member of the Willistown Branch of the Women’s Auxiliary to the Chester County Hospital, as well as served as a member of the Hospital’s Board of Directors. Notes co-nominator H.L. “Perry” Pepper, President of The Chester County Hospital, “Ms. Wilson has given generously of her time, personal resources and talents for more than 40 years. Examples of her philanthropic leadership qualities go far beyond financial generosity.They include her willingness to share her expertise with those charged with creating and sustaining fundraising projects…She has ‘raised the bar’ for many in our community.” Ms. Wilson chose a new initiative, the East End Neighborhood Association of West Chester, to receive the Jordan Award’s $5,000 grant. The grant will be used to develop programs for youth, with an emphasis on art, music, drama and dance to foster alternative learning styles while motivating and inspiring greatness. Martin of Kennett Square 2003 Charles L. “Skip” Huston, III of Chester Springs 2004 Penelope “Penny”Wilson of Malvern PHILANTHROPY AWARDS The Chester County Community Foundation commemorated its 10th anniversary by establishing Let Your Legacy Make A Difference Awards to highlight philanthropic good works and inspire more throughout Chester County. Philanthropy is defined as “active efforts to promote human welfare as manifested in donations of money, property, or work to needy persons or to socially useful purposes.” Legacy philanthropists give of their own time and resources, as well as inspire others to give for the long run. THANKS FOR CARING AWARD: Donald J. L. Coppedge The Thanks for Caring Award spotlights neighborhood organizers who work at a grassroots level to promote local causes by giving time, talent and treasure, as well as recruiting others to the causes. Donald J. L. Coppedge of Phoenixville received the first annual “Thanks for Caring Award.” Mr. Coppedge was nurtured in a strong family environment filled with the riches of faith, integrity, social concerns and community involvement. This was the foundation for a lifetime career of service in organizations that serve the greater community. Mr. Coppedge’s impact, leadership and long-term involvement has been with a variety of organizations, including the Phoenixville YMCA, the Greater Phoenixville Council of Churches, Phoenixville Homes, the Phoenixville Area Progressive Club, the Kiwanis Club of Phoenixville, and Grimes A.M.E. Church. Mr. Coppedge chose the Kiwanis Club of Phoenixville and Grimes A.M.E. Church to share his grant award. DOOR OPENER AWARD: Stephen J. McGann The Door Opener Award is given to a professional advisor who takes the initiative to bring legacy philanthropy options to the attention of their clients for their consideration. Stephen J. McGann received the first annual “Door Opener Award.” The Community Foundation established the Door Opener Award to recognize its strong relationship with professional advisors, such as trust officers, estate planners, financial managers, and wealth managers. Mr. McGann consistently urges clients and colleagues to consider philanthropy in their planning, and to consider the Community Foundation as a philanthropy option. Mr. McGann chose the Vaughn Fund of the West Chester Sunrise Rotary Club to receive his grant check. CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT AWARD: Richard A. Kunsch, Sr. of Phoenixville Federal Bank & Trust The Corporate Social Investment Award is given to a corporate leader who demonstrates sound principles of business leadership and helps the community prosper by consistently supporting local charities. Mr. Kunsch, who tithes 10% of Phoenixville Federal Bank & Trust’s profits to Phoenixville charities, lives by the golden rule—“It is better to give than to receive.” Mr. Kunsch has a widespread influence on community theatre, affordable housing, economic development, health care, and physical fitness as a volunteer, fundraising leader, and philanthropist. For over 40 years, through his charismatic leadership and commanding presence, he has been a vital influence in the Phoenixville community. It is difficult to think of a community project, particularly those dealing with healthcare and social needs, which has not had Mr. Kunsch’s corporate or personal imprint. Mr. Kunsch chose The Clinic in Phoenixville to receive the grant that accompanies this award. EXCEPTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: Charles P. and Louise W. Baker The Bakers have devoted 23 years of their life to the creation and building of Baker Industries. With their energy and ingenuity, in 1980 the Bakers created an appropriate working environment for their epileptic, learning-disabled son. But they didn’t stop there. Several moves and many expansions later, this modest nonprofit enterprise has grown to include a work site in Malvern employing 75 people and a location in Philadelphia employing more than 100 people. This includes the hardest-to-employ homeless people, and those recovering from drug and alcohol problems. In recognition of years of dedicated service, going above and beyond their own needs and helping fill a void in the community, the Community Foundation spotlights the Bakers with this Exceptional Achievement Legacy Award. It is accompanied by a grant to Baker Industries. The Community Foundation accepts nominations for Legacy Awards throughout the year. Decisions are made each summer.
