Adults’ perspectives
Lisa
I’m a hair loss survivor, not a hair loss sufferer
At 18, Lisa lost all her hair – and her new boyfriend too. ‘I felt my life may just as well have
ended,’ says Lisa.‘Who would ever want a relationship with me?’
But over the next few years, Lisa says, ‘I was lucky enough tohavegood relationships with first
one and then another lovely man.’
Six years after losing her hair, Lisa bumped into Michael, her childhood sweetheart. They are
married now with two beautiful daughters.‘I am the happiest I have ever been,’ says Lisa. ‘My
husband adores me with and without my hair. He kisses my head and tells me I am beautiful.’
Lisa feels that her hair loss has meant she has had better partners than if she had kept her
own hair. They were kind, caring people and not shallow enough to care only about perfect looks.
Now Lisa runs the wig clinic where she first got her own wigs. When she meets someone with
hair loss now, she says,‘There is no need for your life to stop. When you eventually find the strength to be yourself again,
don’t let it stop you from doing anything.Ialways say, I’m a hair loss survivor, not a hair loss sufferer.’
Beauty is not skin deep. It comes from within
Tracey adds
I had patchy loss from the age of 7 and lost most of my hair by 18. By the time I was 23 it was all
gone, as well as my eyebrows and lashes. But my hair loss never bothered my boyfriend. The
problem was more with me than him. If someone doesn't like you because of hair loss, then they
are not worth being with. Beauty is not skin deep. It comes from within.
