Can be used in “Certified Organic” applications! Mastitis is the
most costly disease in dairy cows. Estimates of total losses due to
mastitis range from $150 to $300 / cow / year. Losses due to mastitis
& somatic cells include: treatment costs, discarded milk, premature
culling, reduced milk production, and lower price for milk sold.
Studies suggest that the teat canal is more easily penetrated by bacteria.
High numbers of bacteria present in the bedding, prolonged contact
of the udder, plus the adherence of bedding material on teat skin will
increase the risk of environmental mastitis. Risk of mastitis is directly
linked to the level of contamination of the litter.
Moisture is the main risk factor for environmental mastitis. Temperature
of the litter is the second factor to consider. Oxygen will encourage
bacterial growth, as E-Coli and Streptococcus are aerobic bacteria.
