Children: (Kedar 2010 Cary Academy Graduate, Nupur 10th grade in the 10-11 school year) My
husband, Jayant Khadilkar, and I chose to move here for the availability of quality education (and
golf courses). We have lived in Bermuda, Boston, New York and Lexington, KY. I am a
Registered Dietitian, licensed to practice in NC. I have taken a break from the clinical work to be
actively involved with our children’s education. Jayant and I are one of the founding families of
Follow the Child Montessori School in Raleigh and have served in many capacities with that
school. I worked as an Assistant teacher for four years and Lead Teacher as one. Currently, I
serve as a board member of Follow the Child Montessori.
I volunteer for Meals on Wheels of Wake County delivering meals to the elderly once a week and
for Inter Faith Food Shuttle to teach nutrition classes all over the triangle to adults and children.
I have been actively involved at Cary Academy since 2003. I have experienced and enjoyed
various responsibilities of Enrichment Parent, International Day presenter (for 2 years), Charger
Cup volunteer coordinator, Progressive Dinner coordinator (for 3 years), PTAA Community
Scholarship committee member as well as volunteering at many CA events. In the 2007-08
school year, I co-chaired the PTAA Staff Appreciation committee. Currently, I am currently the
Vice President of the PTAA Board. I believe in partnering with and providing optimum support to
the faculty and staff. I enjoy the camaraderie of fellow parents and look forward to continue
serving on your behalf.

VP/President-elect: (vote for 1)
Monica Udell
Statement
Bio
I am the first candidate to voluntarily compete for a position as a Cary Academy PTAA leader of
any rank. This is a new era. For the first time, our parents are so enthusiastic about the PTAA
that we require an election to determine its leadership. This is a dream come true and something
that we should be thankful for. This alone proves my level of passion for Cary Academy!
As we begin this new era, you can see from my biography, I enter this position uniquely qualified.
I offer our community expertise in leadership development and seven years of active engagement
and relationship building with: students, faculty and staff, administrators and parents. We’re so
fortunate to be part of a learning community that has achieved excellence as a result of the
collaboration, dedication, and energy from our: students, administrators, faculty and staff, and
parents. As Vice President, my commitment is to learn from you: What’s working well? What
things aren’t? What might we try that we’ve never done before? By listening and understanding
your perspective, we will grow together. I’ll work to connect our community’s collective talents
and capabilities to enhance the Cary Academy experience for everyone.
I would be honored to serve as your Vice President.
My family and I are familiar faces to the Cary Academy community. My husband, Howard (aka
the Funny Guy) served for three years on the PTAA Board as Treasurer and Fund Raising Chair.
Our daughters, Jaclyn, a senior, and Alexandra, a seventh grader, keep us actively engaged in
the community. For the past two years, I developed and facilitated the Cary Academy Leadership
Institute, a year long leadership development experience for Cary Academy’s upper school
students. During the same time, I’ve acted as one of the 6th grade and 7th grade parent
representatives for Alex’s class.
For over 20 years, my career focus has been leadership development. In 2007, I founded
Umstead Leadership Resources, LLC, a leadership consulting practice. Executive coaching,
leadership program development and customized interventions are areas of expertise. My
experience includes work in health care management, higher education, manufacturing and
technology sectors. As the chief learning officer for Duke University and Duke Health System
(1999 – 2007), I enjoyed the challenge of building a team of consultants who facilitated cultural
change, improved performance management, and advanced human capital initiatives for Duke's
workforce of 27,000 employees. I’ve held adjunct faculty positions at Penn State and The
University of Virginia. I earned dual Bachelors degrees in Political Science and Speech
Communication and a Masters degree in Organizational Communications and Marketing from
Penn State University.
Our entire family is passionate about Cary Academy. I welcome the opportunity to serve as the
Vice President to continue building our community and enhancing the CA experience for the
future.

Troy Weaver
Statement
I was delighted when the PTAA Nominating Committee recommended me as the candidate for PTAA
Vice President for 2010-2011! As VP I would work diligently to support incoming President, Manju
Karkare, and strive to work collaboratively with fellow members of the PTAA Board as well as CA
parents, teachers and administration on the following platform points:

Informing and Engaging Members is one of the PTAA’s strategic priorities; I am hopeful that we
can further explore ways to bolster participation in the PTAA, including outreach to new parents.
In particular, I would like to see an increased engagement of fathers in the PTAA. This will
necessitate a purposeful look at providing varied meeting times and we might also consider
employing the wonderful technology of Cary Academy by offering live streaming as an
participation option for PTAA meetings.
Providing skilled volunteers and resources is another PTAA strategic priority. In many
schools a small segment of its parent population accomplishes the myriad of volunteer
opportunities available. As Cary Academy has many skilled and dedicated existing and
volunteers, how might we increase volunteerism from a broader spectrum of our parent
population while augmenting our resources?
Developing, initiating and sustaining programs is a third strategic priority that includes PTAA
scholarship support. While this funding has provided great experiences for our students, we need
to reflect upon and reevaluate the current criteria to ensure that funds are allocated equitably to
ensure a greater impact on our total community.
Bio
I am a native New Yorker born in Jamaica, Queens and grew up on Long Island in North Babylon,
NY. I came to Durham, North Carolina to attend Duke University and become a pediatrician. I
decided to forgo medical school and after graduation worked at Duke University Medical Center
as a certified Poison Information Specialist by night and eventually became a substitute teacher
with the former Durham City Schools by day. My experiences as a substitute teacher caused me
to be "bitten" by the teaching bug. I earned a Lyndhurst Fellowship at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill to receive a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) and North Carolina
Teacher's Certification in a one-year, intensive program.
My involvement with Cary Academy began in 1997 as an inaugural faculty member serving as
team leader teaching 7 th grade science and algebra in the Middle School. I later moved to the
Upper School where I taught biology and chemistry and developed the course in forensic science.
I also began my first administrative position by becoming Dean of Students for grades 9 & 10. In
2002 I left CA after being selected as the inaugural Headmaster of Durham Nativity School a
private, tuition-free, all-male middle school. Currently, I am involved in another start-up serving
as the inaugural Head of School for Union Independent School, a K-8, private, tuition-free, co-ed
school that opened in Durham in August 2009.
My family lives in Durham, and my wife and I have six sons – KeJuan graduated from Cary
Academy in 2009 and is currently a freshman at NC State University; Korey and Kalen are in
grades 10 and 9, respectively, in the Upper School; and Khalik, Kordell and Kobe attend school in
Durham until their time to attend Cary Academy. As a CA parent I have been involved with the
Friends of Cary Academy and served in a volunteer capacity conducting Open House tours;
serving on the diversity subcommittee for CA’s strategic planning; welcoming new families via
CA101; and, teaching as a guest presenter in Katy Allen’s forensic science course. I would be
honored to be elected to serve in a leadership capacity as Vice President of PTAA.

Treasurer: (vote for 1)
Donna Hodgdon
Our family moved to the Raleigh area over 7 years ago from Greenwich, Connecticut. My
husband, Steve, works as a high net worth financial advisor for Morgan Stanley, and we have two
boys, Brett, in 7 th grade and Tyler in 10 th grade at Cary Academy. I have an undergraduate
degree in Business from Gettysburg College and an MBA in Finance from Loyola University. I
worked as a consultant for Coopers & Lybrand, was a VP for First Chicago Bank, and was a VP
in Systems at a Wall Street firm. When Tyler was in 6 th grade, we did not have a New Parents
dinner. I felt strongly that new families needed a warm initial welcoming, so we created the New
Parents dinner which we co-chaired for 3 years. I have been involved in the Charger Cup, New
family committee, and the Holiday Shoppe. My experience includes chairing many volunteer
committees, including serving as treasurer of a large nursery school auction, creating an
advertising booklet for an antiques show, and as assistant treasurer of a school book fair. I would
like the opportunity to serve as treasurer to give something back to Cary Academy as well as for
the camaraderie of working with other parents, faculty and staff. Currently I am on the board as
assistant treasurer, which provides continuity to the job as treasurer.

Terri Burroughs
Terri B. Burroughs is the wife of Terrence V. Burroughs, President of the Burroughs Management
Wachovia Corporation. During her tenure with Wachovia she led groups ranging in size from 6 to
125 employees in areas including Loan Administration, Insurance Services, and Learning and
Development. Terri has been recognized for her work in developing and implementing
performance improvement initiatives among diverse work groups, and has consulted with teams
in measuring the return-on-investment (ROI) of these types of initiatives. Her work, Forecasting
the Return on Investment of Sales Training, was featured in ROI at Work by Jack J. Phillips and
Patricia Pulliam Phillips, and published in 2005 by the ASTD Press.
