Match Report
The Kings took on archrivals Payneham NU Falcons at the Kings Castle at the
weekend, a game in which the Kings wanted to perform well, in order to perch
themselves within the top 3.
As expected, the first quarter was physical with both sides trying to stamp their
authority on the game. There were limited passages of play that threatened
to break the game open, as both teams created plenty of stoppages and
turnovers around the ground, halting the ability to score. It took until the latter
stages of the first quarter for both sides to register goals with the Kings taking
a 1-point lead into quarter time.
Unfortunately, the second quarter proved to be the turning point in the game.
The Falcons managed to get on top of the Kings in the centre, winning
clearance after clearance and putting pressure on the Kings backline. Despite
trying their best, the likes of Kirkpatrick, Van Der Hoek, Wightman and Jarvis
couldn’t stem the goals as the Falcons kick 3-4 goals in quick succession. The
Kings had to become more defensive by going man on man and managed to
even out the contest by scoring some late goals heading into the main break.
Angus Berry was working hard through the centre and up forward, along
with Starke and Franklin but the damage was done. The Kings seemed to
be playing catch up football for the rest of the quarter as the Falcons took a
17-point lead into half time.
The Kings couldn’t catch the Falcons as the second half went goal for goal until
the final quarter where Payneham managed to sneak a few late ones. The final
margin was not reflective of the game. Wightman and Wilson tried tirelessly
until the end but a 10 minute lapse in concentration in the second quarter cost
the kings the game. Evans kicked another handful of goals and was assisted
by big Jim, Bentley and Nicholson up forward; however this was not enough as
the Kingmen went down by 28-points.
This week the Kings travel up the road to Scotch where they intend to give this
mob a shellacking!! When two college sides clash, it promises to be a great
game. Get out to Scotch College to support the mighty Kingmen in the last
game before the mid season break.
It’s great to be green.
Match Report
The B grade came up against old rivals Payneham last week in a must win
game. The Thursday training before the game saw a few of the older heads
reminding the group just how tough a win against Payneham has been
over the years, and what a glorious opportunity it presented to turn the tide.
Confidence was high going into the game and was bolstered by some tasty
inclusions: Harmsy back from injury, first gamer and young gun Simmo, and
Bakes…also back from injury. The team was focused from the warm up and
started the game determined to play on their terms.
In recent weeks the B grade has had trouble grasping the complex rule
commonly known as the ‘don’t run into the square until the umpire has
bounced it rule’. After giving away one of these rare free kicks early in the
game the Skip had some stern words to the lads no doubt setting everyone on
the straight and narrow.
As expected the first half of the game was a hard slog, with plenty of
congested possessions and low scoring. Payneham dropped a spare man
into their defence, which made the Kings’ forward entries difficult. However,
an in form Blake Sanders was able to counter this move with some dashing
run up the ground. Plenty of accurate kicking by the boys hitting up Blake and
Shredder, allowed the two power forwards to control the forward 50. Blake
ended up kicking a handy 4 goals and was helped along the way with a couple
of sneaky possessions in the goal square.
After matching Payneham for the first half of the game the boys were able to
turn the screw in the third and fourth quarters. Luke Evans and Jack Wightman
were instrumental through the middle of the ground providing some class
delivery to the forwards and contested possession. The robust backline has
developed nicely on the back of a few wins and kept supplying the goods all
day. Laney was a highlight of the back six, having no problem beating his
opponent and crafting countless counterattacking opportunities.
With another outstanding win on the board the lads have moved to third on the
ladder. This week’s game against Scotch offers yet another opportunity for the
B grade and the club to prove themselves.
Match Report
The mighty C Kings travelled just east of Haslam to Daly Oval Magill to take on
the struggling Hecotrville Hounds. The Hounds had been sitting on the bottom
of the ladder with a percentage of 14. The lads new we where travelling to take
on the bottom placed side but I really didn’t want them to think this was going
to be an easy game.
Right from the get go the lads went on a scoring spree kicking 7 goals for the
first quarter. This continued throughout the game with the Kings ending up
comfortable winners by 26 goals the final scores read 2 goals 1 13 Hectorville
to the Kings impressive 28 goals 11 179.
We had a number of standouts in the game. Max Grigoul put on a dominant
display in the middle racking up touch after touch and managed to snaffle 6
goals straight. The bloke would have scored 200+ DT points. Sam Lawrence
and Peter Clayer once again showed plenty of class. Tom Berry rucked for the
first half before being thrown back to the dungeon and doing a great job. One
final mention should go to TJ BAS Jenkinson who managed to snaffle 9 goals.
Great effort from the big fella.
It was a good win for the lads however this weeks opponents look to be far
more formidable. The Kings are currently sitting 5th with Plympton one spot
above. It would be great to have a win at home and go into the break 5 wins
and 4 losses.
You are a veteran of the club and have obviously seen some big changes in your time here. How many
seasons have you played with the Kings and what are the 3 biggest changes you have noticed?
3 biggest changes would have been:
1) The bench is getting used more for rotations which I’m still trying to adjust to it. But that probably
coincides with my poor form this year.
2) The side is starting to get a bit older with a few more older players on the park where as I think when
we started, the average age was around 20, I think it would have increased to around 22-24 now. Jimmy
helps that a bit though.
3) The fact that I’m now one of the old guys running round and not the quick, young fella.
ROUND 4 RAMBLE
So Many Lords…. I have been repeating this all week. Flipping lords everywhere. I do have to give a shout out to Lorde the young New Zealand singer
songwriter. She loves the Kings so much she decide to give herself her stage name after the might club. Also I forgto to mentione in my LOTW last week
about Hugh Winter and Jake Rollins who won the $50 cash raffle. Word has it that the $1000 was spent on having a good time and there was only $65
left 14hours later.
Ok onto the serious business… the nominations for LOTW.
- Erindale Meats: Ok so if you didn’t know Erindale Meats provide the Kings with the fortnightly meat tray and home game BBQ meats. The butchers
decided for novelty to provide us with a7kg 5.5foot stick of salami. This salami stick was pocked and prodded all night and somehow ended up in Jack
Creevys ute. Word has it the Salami now in the fridge of a King man.
- Kev: Kev!!! What a Lord. Was sitting in the front bar of the Kensi celebrating his 77th birthday. His daughter came over and asked us all to sing him
happy birthday. The lads belted out a classic rendition of the famous song followed by Why was he born so beautiful. Its safe to say that Kev was stoked.
What a Lord.
The
Ramber
- Lambo: Lambo gets a nomination for LOTW for the photo he uploaded on the KKC. Classic Lambo stance at the G with his Kings
jacked on. What a lord.
- C Kings: My final nomination goes to the C Kings. The glamour side managed its 3rd win on the trot and what an
emphatic factory it was. Just the lazy 26 goal win. Special mention should go to Mr Jenkinson who managed 9 goals.
From all accounts he didn’t pass one of and was kicking them from all angles.
Ok so the 4 nominations are in… Ummmmm Ermmmmmm aghhhh hmmmm ok! And the winner of this weeks
LOTW goes to Erindale Meats for there huge salami stick. The whole club had a great time with the salami
stick. Lets hope the butchers with a sense of humour can keep providing us with novelty sized meat products.
