In form Kings take on second-placed
Phantoms
Present from the Pres...ADAM
ABERLE
A memorable victory last weekend for the Kings against a highly fancied Rostrevor outfit at Campbelltown Oval. On a
day where a huge crowd were on hand to congratulate Drew Litster on 1000 career goals, the script certainly didn’t go
to plan for the ROCs. James Pinkney and Ben Hill-Ling dominated in the backline, restricting Drew to a single goal in
the later stages of the match after a dubious free kick was awarded. The Kings were simply irresistible, playing a high
intensity, highly skilful and fast running game. Many players believe it is the highest quality football they have been
involved with. The guys were certainly jubilant after the game and the result was just rewards for the continued commitment
and dedication the players have shown.
Round 15 is proudly sponsored by Kennett Builders. They are the premier commercial and industrial builders in this
state. With offices in Adelaide and Mount Gambier they have taken out a bag of awards in recent times for their outstanding
work including the Building Excellence Award in 2009. Our thanks to James ‘Jack’ Kennett and the team at
Kennett Builders for their ongoing support of our Club.
On Saturday the Kings will take on the PHOS Camden at Haslam Oval. In very similar circumstances last year the
Kings had a big victory against the Phantoms at home and after last weeks display, there is no reason to suggest why
history wont repeat. Wayne ‘The Weed’ Weiderman will certainly have his charges ready for action as they look to
setup their finals campaign in 2010, while our boys will be looking to build on the form of last week.
On the other side of Adelaide, Crawford Giles will line up for his 200 th game for the Pembroke Kings at PHOS Camden.
The likes of Rasheed, Rochow, Wilson, Chidley, Fotheringham, Prider, Staritski and Eitzen will all don the green and
gold one more time in respect for Crawford. It is a significant achievement for Crawford and I encourage supporters to
head down Anzac Highway and pay their tributes to man that has given the Club so much over his career. Presentations
held at the Kensington Hotel from 7pm will also acknowledge Crawfs great achievement.
Thanks
My thanks to Patrick Walsh who helped out the Club at short notice during the week and did a superb job.
Sunday Raffle
A reminder that if you have purchased a ticket in the Pembroke Kings Social Club Cash Raffle then the draw will be
held on Sunday afternoon at the Kensington Hotel from 2pm. Drinks and Nibbles will be provided throughout the afternoon
as the Showdown is playing and the tickets are being drawn. Hopefully you will be $1000 richer come Sunday
night.
Sponsors Day
A reminder to all sponsors that Saturday is sponsors day and you are invited to come join us in the War Memorial Pavilion
at Haslam Oval from 1pm for a standup catered lunch.
Centenary Book
Ashley Porter has compiled a marvellous book covering the first 100 years of the Amateur
League in this state. The book obviously covers the Kings OC and Pembroke OS as well as
the rich history of the competition. The book retails for $49.95 and if you would like a copy,
please contact me on the number listed below.
Good luck to Crawford and all the green men on Saturday and I look forward to seeing you at the footy.
Crawford Giles
Congratulations to Crawford Giles who plays his 200 th game on the weekend and in turn becomes a life member of the
Pembroke OSFC. It is a fitting reward to a man that has given so much to the club over an extended period of time.
Crawford was a much decorated dual Premiership player, President and Captain of the Club. He continues to be a major
sponsor and his passion and love for the Club are second to none. We congratulate and thank him for this great achievement.
“Congratulations Crawf ! Twenty One years ago mate was our first game together and come Saturday 5pm, it will be
our fricken last!!!
To play 200 games, Captain the club and be the treasurer/President and also put in the money that you have is an unbelievable
achievement! Best of luck Saturday champ and well done!!- Chids
Congratulations on reaching 200 games this week. It is a true testament to your determination and character (particularly
in the last four years to get your last seven games). You have always lead from the front whether playing A, B or C
Grade football for the Club. You should be extremely proud of your career with the Kings (excluding the incident at
Ingle Farm). Two premierships, A and C grade best& fairest and Club Captain, you have achieved it all. In addition the
club was extremely fortunate to have you on the committee ensuring a solid financial platform upon which to build the
club (unfortunately most of it was lost after you left the committee and I took over).
It is great to have you on board as a fellow life member. Well done and good luck Saturday. -Fothers
Congratulations on playing your 200th game. 200 is a significant achievement - if you never
miss a game through injury and the team plays 2 finals games every year it takes 10 years to
rack up that many games. 10+ years of training and commitment to the club. It has taken
you longer than that - injuries and some time in Sydney where you played against the Sydney
Swans reserves (stood Tadgh Kennelly) and on the SCG helped that.
Playing 200 games makes you eligible for life membership of the Kings, an honour already richly deserved from your
contribution to the club off the field - financially as a major sponsor and on a committee level as a former treasurer of
the club. An A grade Premiership, a C grade Premiership, Captain of the Club, and an A grade best and fairest, are testament
to your on field prowess. Strong overhead for your size, clean hands and disposal from both sides and very hard at
it. Kept your nose (easier for you than others) over the ball no matter what. A player I have had the pleasure of playing
with and have admired, I was very honoured to be asked to play in your 200th.
You have brought so much more to the club than that. You are one of the more vibrant people I have ever played with.
Capable of lifting those around you with your personality. You and the SPU boys lit up the old clubrooms at 8 Shipsters
Road with your antics, you also lit up the training track with those multicoloured 80's fluoro happy pants you wore to
training in lieu of the dull colourless and boring skins that are the de rigueur of the modern player. You know how to
have a good time and how to work hard when required. One of my fondest memories of you was in match against
Campbelltown-Magill at Campbelltown Oval (where ROCs play now) when you commentated on the game while playing.
The commentary went something like "Crawf crumbs the pack beautifully, goes short to Prides lace out, runs past
for the 1-2 handball and goes bang from 50 for a team lifter" and went the whole game. The myths and legends abound
- the year you won the B&F by a country mile, rumour has it that you did so after playing 18 holes of golf in the Saturday
morning followed by a couple of quiet ones in the 19th and then some pre-match car park action with the girlie to
get you fired up.
Two-time premiership player, Best and Fairest winner, A Grade Captain, Treasurer, Sponsor and now life member -
you have done it all at the Kings.
Welcome to the 200 club.
Cheers,
Charlie
A few facts that some may have not known about the "great man" that I have come to know of him.
1. He has probably missed 50 plus games due to old age and a tragically fragile body
2. He is a Westminster Old Scholar.
3. He was a low single figure golfer in his youth playing as an "A" grade pennant golfer
4. He is a Premiership Player for the "Kings"
5. He hates a "drink" (probably we all know that!!!!!!)
6. His longest known kick is 35 metres (with the wind). That was in 1995 and it is probably 25 metres now.
7. He was Club Captain
8. He was named in the Club's "Team of the Decade" 1990-1999
9. He has been a great financial supporter of this Club for many years.
10. He is a generous man defined by his proposed establishment of an Orphanage in Uganda
11. In summary he is one of the all-time greats of this Club.
Crawf's match day preparation
A true story......On match days when I was coaching back in the early 90's I was told that
Crawf had had a few beers before the game one day. I enquired with him about this after the
match (think he was close to best that day) when he freely admitted that he had and he always
did so! Much to my horror I enquired as to why and the response was that he was up early every
Sat to play golf...then a quick dash into the 19th for a couple of refreshing beers after his round and
then came out to play football
every week and he had been following that routine regularly. Whilst it was suggested that his form was fine
it was not the way to go, due to the example set to others. He thankfully accepted that decision and ceased with the
beers...well I presume so anyway. Now that’s different preparation!
Crawf the player
Crawf has always been a very relaxed and fun loving person off the field but when it came to playing the game I can
assure everyone there was no-one who was harder at it than Crawf. His courage and commitment to his teammates has
been unquestioned as he was always there to support in any way he could. It was always the case that you never had to
say much to him as a Coach before the game because you knew what you would get every time he went out on the
ground...100%.
His passion for the Club is unbridled. I remember clearly the '97 premiership when he was rotating roving in a 3 way off
the bench rotation. He came off with about 5 minutes to go but came to me a minute later asking if he could be on the
field when the siren sounded so he could really enjoy the feeling. I had no hesitation in putting him back on as he was
the type of player who really deserved every bit of pleasure he could get out of it as he had stuck by the Club through
relegation and assisted greatly in turning the Club around toward a Premiership...a just reward!
Crawf as I know him
Luckily I am honoured to classify Crawf as a great friend and someone who I could always rely on if ever the time
came. He has always offered his unconditional support to me and my family and that is something I treasure.
Crawford Giles is a true "Legend" of this great Club and his 200th game is fitting reward for the commitment and sacrifices
he has made for the "Kings".
Enjoy the day Crawf...you deserve a big day!
A WORD FROM THE HAFF...
“CLUB SPIRIT”
As Captain Sam Fritsch said in his speech at the Kensington after his 100 th game last week, he has found the “Club
Spirit” to be as high as it has ever been within the club in his time with it. Considering we have had a poor record on
the field as far as pure results go, I think this is a remarkable statement coming form someone who has also enjoyed
far more successful seasons.
It is a statement that I completely concur with. Amazingly the unity within the playing group is very high and I feel
that this can be put down to several factors which I highlight below:
• The players who have stuck by each other and supported each other at all times. Very rarely have cross words
been spoken, if at all
• The attitude at training where we are still getting good numbers, especially form the “A” Grade side thus encouraging
each other to get out there.
• Players accepting responsibility…There have only been four occasions when an A Grade player has missed a
training session without letting me know before hand. A great effort of committed players who believe in what they
are doing.
• The excellent leadership that has been shown form not only the appointed position leaders within the club who
have been outstanding, but also to other senior players which has also in turn encouraged many younger ones to themselves
take additional responsibility.
• The excellent work of Angus Berry, Mark Crowhurst and Scott Wightman in particular in arranging such a full
social program during the season that has provided the “playground” for all players to relax together, get to know
each other a little better and enjoy each other’s company in a happy environment.
The continued support of our Monarchs, Vice-Patrons, Player Sponsors and supporters who not only support us financially
but also by their regular attendance at matches and at the club after the matches.
It is my view that although the Club looks likely to be relegated to Division 3 next season that the “heady days of success
and development” await us. This is the cusp of an exciting era for the club, believe me, so stay on for the ride!

ROUD 14
Following on from our narrow lost to SPOC last week we ventured to Rostrevor, ranked equal second in the competition
and a side that “spanked” us badly at home in the first round by a whopping 76 points. It was going to be a very
tough gig especially considering that their full forward (who had been the leading goal kicker in Div 1 for the past six
seasons), was sitting on 999 career goals and had already bagged over 71 so far this season including 23 in the last 2
weeks so was in red hot form. ROC was hosting a big day for the occasion so it was going to be a hard day.
We welcomed back Anthony Lewis and Tom Wilson with the unlucky players this week being Nick Bentley and
Neddy” Harmer who returned to the “B” Grade after good work being done in the “A” Grade side. Amazingly this
was the first week for the season we had not lost a player through injury, work, or other commitments.
A three-goal wind and a big crowd awaited us as we kicked into the wind in the first term. We were on from the start,
reflex handball, playing on and taking risks, tackling hard and getting to the ball first. Fraser Pinkney on top in the
ruck, Sam Fritsch and Angus Berry winning the ball in close, Jim Pinkney controlling centre half back and Ben Hill-
Ling on top at full back and Tom Evans providing a target up forward we went in with a narrow lead. Full credit to
our midfield and forwards who applied great pressure up the filed to not allow ROC any free ball movement.
To ROC’s credit they came out hard in the second term and whilst they had more scoring shots into the breeze they
were always under great pressure and really did not miss any easy goals. Nick McCann was solid in defence, Alexander
Dean was providing rebound with Alex Catford across half back and Scott Wightman winning his wing, Alex
Holbrook dynamic up forward and on the ball as always, we maintained our narrow lead.
Into the wind we knew this could be a really tough one as they would throw everything at us. We were superb and
played arguably our best qtr for the year kicking 5.6 into the wind to 3 points. Ben Way had a great quarter, Tucks
continued to produce up forward and with Anthony Lewis controlling the rucks after we lost Fraser Pinkney five minutes
into the second term we looked good.
In the last we just kept running and raced away to probably our best win in the past two or three seasons I am told by
some players. A great credit to every player on the field as every player did his bit.
We are starting to play the type of football we have been training hard to implement and this will only develop further
as we mature more as a group and individually by playing more together, getting to know each other better and the
players themselves gain even more confidence in the game plan, their team mates and themselves.
There will be hiccups along the way no doubt but the improvement has been excellent as everyone who was there yesterday
will attest to.
PHOS-Camden, now sitting second, will be a real test for us this week but as I have said to the players we have nothing
to lose, believe in what we are doing, back yourself, back your mate, have a go, take some chances and enjoy!
It was a pretty disappointing match really. We fall into the habit of lazy footy far too easily. We just didn’t work hard enough, talk enough and
basically, Rostrevor wanted it more than us. Except in the last quarter. In that quarter we talked and worked for each other, and the momentum
changed. We are a good side capable of playing good footy—we just need to do the little things right from the get go.
Final Scores:
ROC 9-18-72
def
Kings 1-13-19
GOAL: Byrnes-Howe
Best: Byrnes-Howe, Kirkpatrick, Moir, Coach, Woolard, Mignone
The C-Kings came out strong this week up against rival ROCs. We started good mates with ROC's after approving an
earlier game so that they can sprint off very quickly to watch one of their players kick his 1000th goal. Unfortunately
for them, this took a until the 4th quarter and it was a dismal display at best.
Nevertheless, we weren't friends for long. The game got pretty heated and we had a multiple-send-off-second quarter
from both teams. We held our own with the ROCs during the first quarter and at the end of the day it was our kicking
that let us down. Kicking a score of 1-13 simply isn't good enough and especially given our only goal came late in the
third.
It was our second quarter which let us down where we struggled to convert and we struggled to push enough players
back - our midfields didn't defend well enough and their team capitalised. We did, however, have a few star players
and all of the younger pedigree which bodes well for the future of the club and team.
Starting a sixth best with Franco Mignone, this guy played down back all day which usually helps you get in the best
when you lose by 10 goals. He isn't the tallest bloke on the field but he has good skills and can read the play well. He
will only grow more and strengthen his impact on the field as he throws on a bit of muscle and experience around the
bigger bodies.
Next we had a bloke who has managed to get rid of all of his blisters and become a pivotal part of the team. He played
in the guts all day and had an enjoyable time doing it. He has good skills and the ability to get himself in the right position,
so hopefully with advances in modern blister protection devices, we will get this guy going for a whole season
and he will start to show what he can really do.
Our fourth best is probably a bit unlucky to only get fourth to be honest. The guy is one of the most talented footballs
I've ever seen play and it's a true credit to how awesome the C-Grade are that they managed to keep this guy in their
side. Normally he kicks 35 goals a game but this week he played out of his normal position at Full Forward and snuck
onto the half forward. He didn't manage to get a single goal, but then again our team only kicked one. Fourth best this
week is Viscount Crowhurst (aka Banga).
C-Kings 2010
-With Mark Crowhurst
Third best this week is something very promising for the club. He came out from school amid a few Friday Arvo
phone calls to play for the C-Kings. He's got good pace and can read the ball well and as he leaves school next year
and starts to train with the Kings and get to know the lads a bit better he will become a pretty powerful player out here
at the Kings. Tom Moir has promised to return next year so we are all looking forward to that.
Second best is a bloke who I feel slightly rude for keeping in the dungeon for so long. He was there all last year and
popped down there early this year but Kirkpatrick has proven himself and will rarely get back down into the dungeon
anymore. Having said that our midfield last year was a bit stronger than it is this year. Riley played a great game and
he's able to read the ball really well and throw his weight around. He has pretty good pace and can bust open packs
which makes him a very powerful player and I look forward to him getting a bit more experience in the middle and
domination.
Best on ground this week is 2010's surprise package. His first game I put him at HFF and he played pretty well. I
asked him how he felt about HFF and he told me that was his first game of footy. Boy has he come a long way since -
we played him in the middle all day this week and he blossomed. He dominated the play and his fitness and pace
showed why he is going to be a great player. Later this year and moving into the next few seasons he has at the kings,
this guy will become a very solid player and I'm looking forward to seeing him listed in the A's.
As you can see, all of our best players are on the upward slope of their career - especially Viscount Crowhurst who is
probably going to get drafted in 2011 by Geelong. We have a very young team (and club) and this is why it is so exciting
to be a king at the moment. As these players grow in body and experience we will begin to develop into a good
quality close knit club. While at the moment we lack the results on the board, it only takes one night at training and a
few beers at the Kensi on Saturday to realise that the morale around the club is so strong because we are looking down
the barrel at a very exciting few years to come. We will certainly begin to dominate the competition as our young contingent
grow.
This week we have Crawford Giles' 200th at PHOS Camden at Camden oval at 2pm for anyone looking to see a good
fun game. The older contingent have raised their hands and so I am excited about having a bit of a leg with some of
the older heads around the club. I am optimistic over these lads teaching the younger players a thing of two and it will
be exciting to reminisce in old times - when I was a young lad running water to all these guys out on the field in their
hay-day.
Tool of the Week: Ashtray, for getting sent off for trying to punch their player with Roid-Rage, and missing. Nothing
more needs to be said except that Ashtray's response to the umpire cannot be typed in a public document. Also he deserves
it for missing a goal from the goal square. Unlucky Asha.
