involving guns other than the obvious,
gunsmithing. Thanks. Your help would
be greatly appreciated.
Gents, I’d start behind the counter of a
local gun store if there are any in your
areas. Volunteer if you have to, but get a
job in a gun store. It will give you solid
experience learning about products and
the business side of the industry. While in
school, take business-related classes and
learn to type and use computers. Spreadsheet
software, Word and accomplished
Internet use are all important. Attend the
Shooting and Hunting Outdoor Trade
Show in Las Vegas. If you graduate with
a marketing degree, that really opens
doors to marketing/sales jobs, especially
if you have a shooting/hunting-type background
and understand the industry and
guns/reloading, etc. And, read everything
you can. Go to www.shootingindustry.
com and read the digital edition every
month. Sign up to get an e-mail notification
of when the latest edition is published.
The magazine is a sister publication
of Handgunner, and is all about our
industry. It will also give you skills to
help you work in gun stores. Shooting
Industry will keep you updated on new
products, what companies are doing,
and other important information. With
rare exceptions, it often takes decades of
experience reloading, shooting, hunting,
collecting and building your knowledge
of the industry before you can really
have any luck writing for outdoor magazines.
A far better first step is to learn the
“business side” of things, and go from
there. RH
Big Bore Snubbies
I was glad to see an article on bigbore
snubbies, but unlike Duke, I’ve
found them to be excellent carry guns
(“Big Bore Snubbies,” Jan/Feb 2011).
I’ve been carrying a S&W 325 Nightguard
as my main CCW for over a year.
It’s light, conceals well under a rugby
shirt or sweater (in a holster made for
me by Gaunt Leather here in Springfield),
and I can hit with it better than
anything else, even my 1911. I also practice
with it more than anything else, so
there may be a correlation there? I love
the sights, although I haven’t tried any
25 yard groups, but it does knock down
the pepper popper at 30 yards regularly.
Right now I’m using 230-gr. Gold Dots
but I’m going to try 255-gr. Buffalo
Bore ARs (Auto Rims) for carry. Lastly
I don’t worry about limp-wristing, mag
springs, stove pipes or anything else and
it dumps all the brass right at my feet.
I’m 64 now and that’s important.
