Overview of Performance Indicators and Staffing
MCAS
In 2011, OMS students made some gains in MCAS scores, particularly in the number of students scoring proficient or higher. OMS students
outperformed the state average in proficient or higher scores on all MCAS exams except for one, Grade 7 English
Language Arts. The 2011 MCAS scores also tell us that we must continue to work towards closing the proficiency gap for all student groups.
NAEP
In February of 2013, the O’Donnell Middle School will represent schools across our state and the nation by participating in the 2013
administration of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). As part of this program, grade eight students will participate in
reading and mathematics testing.
Class Size & Staffing
We have 74 full time teachers. The O’Donnell Middle School has interdisciplinary teams at each grade level. On top of their core academic
classes – math, ELA, social studies, science, and reading (grade 6) or world languages (grades 7 & 8) – OMS students take a series of exploratory
and pathways offerings as a way to enhance and enrich their overall academic experience. All grade levels have support services for students in
ELL, Special Education, and regular education students who have been identified as needing remediation in reading and/or math.
Class size is imperative to good learning. Our goal over the past few years has been to reduce the sizes of our classes. In 2010-2011 we had only
14 classes over 25 students. The vast majority of these were our advanced “Challenge” classes where the students are highly motivated. Counting
all staff and support we have a 14 to 1 teacher to student ratio. We try to individualize instruction. We have noticed that there are more F’s in any
class with more than 20 students and fewer F’s in classes with less than 20 students. With the introduction of the S.T.E.M. and Humanities
pathways classes, we have experienced an increase in class size.
In 2007, there were 17 classes with more than 25 students.
In 2008, there were 15 classes with more than 25 students.
In 2009, there were 14 classes with more than 25 students.
In 2010, there were 14 classes with more than 25 students.
In 2011, there were 127 classes with more than 25 students.
This increase is due to the added pathways classes with no addition in teaching positions.
The administrative team recognizes the academic benefit of the pathways program at OMS and will explore scheduling options to decrease some
of these large class sizes. The principal will also propose the addition of new teaching positions to assist in decreasing class sizes as well.
