craft community at Ditchling in Sussex, where Johnston lived and worked for many years.<br />
BIO-2 More Than Fine Writing – <strong>The</strong> Life and Calligraphy <strong>of</strong> Irene Wellington Heather Child, Heather Collins,<br />
Anne Hechle, Donald Jackson, 1986. A compilation <strong>of</strong> the life’s work <strong>of</strong> Irene Wellington, talented student <strong>of</strong><br />
Edward Johnston, who went on to teach another generation <strong>of</strong> English calligraphers. Contains a wealth <strong>of</strong> beautiful<br />

CC-9 Words <strong>of</strong> Risk, <strong>The</strong> Art <strong>of</strong> Thomas Ingmire Michael Gullick, 1989. Lavishly illustrated in color and black<br />

Rotring Pens company.<br />

Johnston’s unfinished work attempting to explore the understanding <strong>of</strong> historic hands and their underlying design<br />
principles. This is a good book for further study <strong>of</strong> Johnston’s Foundational Hand.<br />

CI-25 Step-By-Step Calligraphy, A Complete Guide With Creative Projects Susan Hufton, 1997 A beautiful look<br />
at elegant calligraphic projects. Excellent photography, great instructional text and examples. Susan Hufton<br />
worked as a scribe on the Saint John’s Bible.<br />
CI-26 Writing & Illuminating & Lettering Edward Johnston, 1907, with 33 re-printings through 1977. This is the<br />
book which started it all for many American calligraphers in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Its classic format is still very<br />
useful for layout and design, page design, use <strong>of</strong> quills, gilding, illumination, decoration, and calligraphic scripts.<br />
Reflects much <strong>of</strong> what Johnston taught during his years at the Central School <strong>of</strong> Arts <strong>of</strong> Crafts, and at the Royal<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Art in London.<br />
CI-27 Written Letters – 33 Alphabets for Calligraphers, Expanded and Revised. Jacqueline Svaren, 1975. Classic<br />
instruction book with detailed historical and technical information on each style. <strong>The</strong> entire book is written in<br />
Svaren’s fine italic hand.

Koeth, 2000. Showing <strong>of</strong> the finest <strong>calligraphy</strong>, this <strong>catalog</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers great variety and a wide scope <strong>of</strong> work.<br />
EC-2 Celebration <strong>of</strong> Calligraphy. Seventy-five Years <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> Scribes and Illuminators 1996. This<br />
<strong>catalog</strong> has color throughout, and features a long history <strong>of</strong> work by SSI members, from traditional pieces by<br />
Edward Johnston to very contemporary work by others. Much <strong>of</strong> the work is on vellum, with some on glass, wood,<br />
fabric, and stone.<br />
EC-3 <strong>The</strong> Graceful Envelope, Scripsit, Volume 25, Number 3, December, 2002 <strong>The</strong> colorful results <strong>of</strong> Graceful<br />
Envelope Contest, comprised <strong>of</strong> winning entries sponsored by the Washington Calligrapher’s Guild. Every<br />
imaginable technique, tool and lettering style are used to create these winners.<br />
EC-4 <strong>The</strong> Graceful Envelope, Scripsit, Volume 31, Number 1, Spring, 2009 More amazing envelopes.<br />
EC-5 2000 Years <strong>of</strong> Calligraphy Published by Walters Art Gallery, 1965. One <strong>of</strong> the most annotated exhibition<br />
<strong>catalog</strong>s ever made on the subject <strong>of</strong> <strong>calligraphy</strong>. Three major art museums sponsored this exhibition. This book<br />
has the sure touch <strong>of</strong> the curator with all <strong>of</strong> its detail and 218 plates.<br />
EC-6 Painting With Words: <strong>The</strong> Calligraphy <strong>of</strong> Donald Jackson 1988. This slim volume honors an exhibition at<br />
the Minneapolis Institute <strong>of</strong> Arts in 1988 and was sponsored by <strong>The</strong> London Link, a travel/study group which<br />
originated from the <strong>Colleagues</strong> <strong>of</strong> Calligraphy. Seven <strong>of</strong> the 55 pieces are pictured in the <strong>catalog</strong>. Remarks are<br />
included from Anne Hechle, Christopher de Hamel, John Stevens, Kazuaki Tanahashi, and Guillermo Rodriguez<br />
Benitez.<br />

into your work with this step by step workbook <strong>of</strong> exercises.<br />
GC-3 Thoughtful Gestures; <strong>The</strong> Calligraphic Art <strong>of</strong> Yves Leterme Yves Leterme, 2011. A master at growing his<br />
work from traditional letterforms to his present gestural work, this experienced teacher/calligrapher talks about what
gestural work needs to be. This is the story <strong>of</strong> his own calligraphic journey with words, tools and materials.<br />

HC-1 <strong>The</strong> Art <strong>of</strong> Written Forms: <strong>The</strong> <strong>The</strong>ory and Practice <strong>of</strong> Calligraphy Donald M. Anderson, 1969. This book<br />
has been a first introduction for many American calligraphers to the vibrant history and evolution <strong>of</strong> letterforms.<br />
Anderson writes with an engaging style, and this history is never dull. Many illustrations.<br />
HC- 2 <strong>The</strong> Complete Guide to Calligraphy Techniques and Materials Judy Martin, 1984. This book is more about<br />
the history <strong>of</strong> letterforms and writing, and writing instruments and materials. Many images, wonderful text.<br />
HC-3 <strong>The</strong> Development <strong>of</strong> the Roman Alphabet Published by BSB, 1963. Many inspiring black and white<br />
images <strong>of</strong> manuscript texts. Excellent resource for the study <strong>of</strong> medieval scripts.<br />
HC-4 Explicatio Formarum Litterarum: <strong>The</strong> Unfolding <strong>of</strong> Letterforms From the First Century to the Fifteenth<br />
Rutherford Aris, 1990 Hardbound cover that unfolds to 36” spread, showing the unfolding <strong>of</strong> letterforms during the<br />
first fifteen centuries, from hand-written book to printed text.<br />
HC-5 <strong>The</strong> First Writing Book: Arrighi’sOperina John Howard Benson, 1976. This unique book is Benson’s very<br />
successful attempt to make an English facsimile <strong>of</strong> Arrighi’s italic handwriting manual from the Renaissance. This<br />
book is entirely written by hand in the same format, page for page as Arrighi’s original book.<br />
HC-6 Historical Scripts Stan Knight, 1984. This book has become a well-loved classic with its detailed analysis<br />
<strong>of</strong> a weighty number <strong>of</strong> manuscript portions. <strong>The</strong> priority here is to examine historical writing, apart from the<br />
decoration that may accompany such writing in a manuscript. An excellent study tool.<br />
HC-7 <strong>The</strong> History and Technique <strong>of</strong> Lettering Alexander Nesbitt, 1957. One <strong>of</strong> the first available accounts <strong>of</strong> the<br />
history <strong>of</strong> <strong>calligraphy</strong> and letterforms. Many images, with a scholarly, yet very readable text. \<br />
HC-8 Lettering Hermann Degering, 1965. Such a short title for such an expansive book. Degering leaves no<br />
stone unturned as he walks the reader through the fascinating history <strong>of</strong> letters. Many examples <strong>of</strong> stone carving,<br />
ancient writing, medieval manuscripts and contemporary work. This book is rich in imagery.<br />
HC-9 Lettering As Drawing Nicolete Gray, 1982 A classic survey <strong>of</strong> the history <strong>of</strong> drawn letters, from the<br />
beginnings <strong>of</strong> writing, on up to contemporary sign writing. Excellent, stimulating text.<br />
HC-10 Masterpieces <strong>of</strong> Calligraphy, 261 Examples, 1500-1800 Edited by Peter Jessen, 1981 Many examples <strong>of</strong><br />
the earliest Renaissance italic writing manuals on up through copperplate and engrossing in Victorian times.<br />
HC-11 <strong>The</strong> Origin <strong>of</strong> the Serif Edward M. Catich, 1991 A major presentation by Fr. Catich on his theory about the<br />
brush being used before the chisel in ancient Roman inscription. This book is filled with his beautiful brush-made<br />
Romans and a detailed text on the development <strong>of</strong> Roman inscriptional letter forms.<br />
HC-12 <strong>The</strong> Pen’s Excellencie: A Pictorial History <strong>of</strong> Western Calligraphy Joyce Irene Whalley, 1982. A<br />
complete pictorial history <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> western <strong>calligraphy</strong>.<br />
HC-13 <strong>The</strong> Roman Letter James Hayes, 1951. A concise look at the history <strong>of</strong> the Roman letter in all <strong>of</strong> its<br />
various progressions. American calligrapher Hayes writes in an engaging style and includes good images and<br />
drawings.

especially for those who want to learn about how manuscript books were made in medieval times. Inside secrets,<br />
sometimes surprising and humorous are sprinkled through the text. Get a view into the life <strong>of</strong> the medieval<br />
scriptorium.<br />
HIM-3 <strong>The</strong> Most Beautiful Bibles Edited by Andreas Fingernagel, Christian Gastgeber, 2008. A gigantic tour de<br />
force <strong>of</strong> illuminated Bibles and related texts. Most plates are vastly enlarged so that the finest detail may be<br />
discovered in this greatly over-sized book.<br />

IGDL-3 1001 Illuminated Initial Letters Owen Jones, 1988. Jones was a Gothic Revivalist in mid-1800 England.<br />
He designed these ornate, foliated, filigreed initials in 1864. <strong>The</strong>y are his personal impression <strong>of</strong> historic gothic<br />
styles. His limited palette can be altered with color additions and substitutions, as you use these letters.<br />

decorated initial letters through the ages. Good for tracing and hand painting for your own projects.<br />

illumination. This book <strong>of</strong> hours was owned by William Lord Hastings who commissioned it for himself in 1480.<br />
Janet Backhouse has written its detailed informative commentary. It contains many floral borders, <strong>The</strong> script is a<br />
semi cursive related to some batarde styles <strong>of</strong> the 15 th century
MF-2 <strong>The</strong> Tres Riches Heures <strong>of</strong> Jean, Duke <strong>of</strong> Berry Published by George Braziller, Inc., 1989. Full color<br />
reproductions <strong>of</strong> the miniatures in this famous 15 th -century manuscript. Next best to seeing the real book.<br />

delightful book could have easily appeared under the book arts section in the <strong>library</strong> <strong>catalog</strong>. <strong>The</strong> focus <strong>of</strong> decorated<br />
paper is the main part <strong>of</strong> the book, with all kinds <strong>of</strong> applications in your art projects.<br />
