Systems
Over the next couple of weeks, you may notice a few changes on the Library Intranet (http://
intranet.library.gatech.edu). These are the result of a new database implementation that runs the
intranet and are intended to make the intranet more useful and customizable.
The organization of content and navigation are pretty much the same so you shouldn’t have any
problems locating information, but some of the file names have changed and as a result, bookmarks
may become outdated or break altogether.
In the coming months, we will be working on reorganizing the content and reworking the
navigation. We will also be adding new applications that will enhance the day-to-day business of
the Library. Please bear with us as the Intranet evolves into a more useful tool.
New Faces: Crystal Renfro...
Please welcome Crystal Renfro to the Library as an
Information Services Librarian. Crystal is a new graduate from
Southern Connecticut State University’s MLS program. She is
a career change librarian. Prior to becoming a librarian, she
was an Associate Actuary and provided quality assurance on
the mathematical calculations of life insurance plans. In her
last position, she managed a group of mathematicians who
helped verify the accuracy of computer programs created to
calculate premiums, cash values, and other mathematical
values on new life insurance plans. Crystal has a second
Master’s Degree in Actuarial Science from Georgia State
University.
Crystal has a long time love of the work librarians do, and in
fact, worked in her high school library throughout her time
there, as well as working for a Library for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped in college. She just completed an
internship at the University of Connecticut’s Health Sciences
Library. She is excited to be returning to the world of the librarian and feels that academia suits her personality
particularly well. She will be the subject librarian for ISYE and Mathematics.
Crystal and her two bichon frise dogs have settled into a lovely home in Lawrenceville. Joy (12 years) and McGyver
(11 years) are particularly enjoying their new fenced-in back yard. McGyver is a rescue that Crystal adopted from a
nationwide Bichon Rescue Organization called Small Paws. (www.smallpawsrescue.org). Crystal has been an
active foster parent of several bichons with this organization over the past several years and expects to be
receiving a new foster dog soon.
In addition to her involvement with bichons, Crystal has a number of other hobbies including ballroom dancing,
scrapbooking, weight lifting and of course, reading. She just learned how to swim this past winter and looks
forward to finding an indoor pool near her home to keep up her practice.
and Ray Bedner
Please welcome to the Information Services Department Ray
Bedner, who joins the GT Library after several years at the William
R. Haselton Library of the Institute of Paper Science and
Technology. His previous library service includes the reserve unit
at Emory University’s Candler Library, as well as research
assistance at the Pathology Education and Research Foundation,
based at the University of Pittsburgh.
Originally from Western Pennsylvania, Ray grew up within a short
drive of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, and as a result, caught
the architecture appreciation “bug” early on. He continues to
enjoy visiting noteworthy structures, and seeks them out
wherever his travels take him. His best-loved favorite to date:
SOM/Chicago’s brutalist 1965 Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.

Staff Profile: Joey Fones
Position: Library Assistant
Years at Georgia Tech: One.
Education/Previous Positions: I formerly worked as a
Library Assistant of ILL at Auburn university for 2 and a
half years while I went to school part time, majoring in
History (I grew up next door to the Chickamauga
Battlefield, so it was almost destined). After a year off
from school, I am back to taking classes at Georgia
Perimeter College.
Favorite aspect of job: Interaction with the customers.
They ensure that no two days are ever the same.
Hometown: Chattanooga, TN
Hobbies: Reading and cooking. I also love baseball,
SEC football, running, and hiking/backpacking. I don’t
get to spend as much time outdoors as I used to, but
its still my favorite hobby.
Joey Fones and Alison Faupel, on the bench at
the Atlanta Botanical Garden where they got
engaged.
Personal: I just got married to Alison Faupel, an Emory graduate student, in August. We are closing on our
first house October 1 st , and we like to blame all of this on our dog Taj (as in the musician Taj Mahal), a 5 year
old retired racing Greyhound. We got him in April, and that’s when the talk of the house really got serious
(we suddenly felt cramped in a 550 square foot apartment).
People may be surprised to know...That most days I drink 2-3 pots of coffee, and still manage to get to
sleep most nights by 10 (I’m such an old man).
Good books you’ve recently read: Life of Pi, by Yann Martell; Garden of Eden by E. Hemingway; Dress Your
Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris. I would highly recommend all three.
Favorite recent music: I’ve been a big fan of Damien Rice since I heard him on NPR about 18 months ago. I
also have been listening to a lot of easy going blues like Keb’ Mo, the ultimate coffee shop bluesman Chris
Smither, and of course Taj Mahal.

New Offering From Digital Initiatives
The Digital Initiatives, Systems, and Archives
Departments worked together to create the online
presentation of Edward Emerson Barnard’s
Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky
Way. This renowned 19 th and early 20 th century
astronomer specialized in wide-field astronomical
photography. The two-volume book includes 50 of his
photographs of the Milky Way, focusing specifically on
349 dark objects. Each dark object is cataloged and
notated extensively in this publication. Each
photograph has a corresponding chart mapping out
the dark and light objects, a table of its relevant
scientific data and descriptive text. Our project took
the photograph and the chart and combined them to
make a new image that literally maps the sky. This site
presents all these components with their
corresponding Barnard photograph with the added
benefit of a searchable database as well as user guides,
histories and background information.
