Page 11Contributing Writer Contributing WriterI remember fi rst seeing the trailer for TheDarjeeling Limited a couple of months ago whileI was sitting in the theater waiting for some othermovie to start. Before the trailer was even halfwaythrough, I was certain I knew the director. Thewide shots, the whip pans and the story of familyrelations—it all pointed to Wes Anderson. Andas far as I’m concerned, Wes Anderson typicallypoints to fi lms that I will be sure to enjoy. TheDarjeeling Limited is no exception. The story seems simple enough; three brothersOver the past decade a trendin horror movies has lead to theemergence of a “torture-porn”subgenre, which entails exactlywhat its name suggests. Thesemovies strive to engage their audiencevia shock tactics that moreoften than not include extremelygraphic imagery and cheapthrills. Critics have dismissedthese films as distasteful and unintelligent. And while I partiallyagree with what these people haveto say, I still find myself a hugefan of these movies.Possibly the most influentialfi lm in leading this trend hasbeen the low-budget, box-officehit Saw, directed by James Wan.Three years and two sequels later,we are presented with the fourthinstallment of what is expected tobe at least a six-installment franchise,Saw IV, directed this timeby Darren Lynn Bousman.Renowned murderer Jigsaw(Tobin Bell) is dead. The moviekicks off with his autopsy, duringwhich one of his characteristictapes is found inside his stomach. This tape is what ultimately endsup pulling the plot of this moviefull-circle. Without giving toomuch away, this movie is neithera sequel nor a prequel, but what itis, for the most part, works.Bousman has commentednumerous times that this installment’spurpose is to give abetter understanding of how JohnKramer (Jigsaw) came to be obsessedwith testing the human natureto survive, and furthermoreset on teaching deadly life lessonsthrough such experiments. Thefocus on characterization in thismovie definitely helps maintaincompetence in a franchise on theedge of wearing its formula thin.Aiding in this characterization isJigsaw’s wife, Jill (Betsy Russell),who we also get to learn moreabout in this movie.Driving this movie’s plot is Contributing WriterWe all have a need to feelwanted and loved. However, theimportant question is how entertainingthe movie is regardless ofits political message.Director Gavin Hood createsa heart-wrenching dramaabout the tragedies of terrorismand torture with the underlyingmessage that “violence begetsviolence.”This vicious cycle makes thefilm roll back and forth betweendiffering points of view of multiplecharacters and confusingpeople who care for him most.Gus Lindstrom, who is Lars’sbrother and is played by Paul Schneider, and his wife Karin (EmilyMortimer) are excited when Larsinforms them of his new Braziliangirlfriend, Bianca. However, things are not quite as they seemas we soon find out when Larsshows up at his brother’s housewith a large, plastic doll (Bianca)and claims she is his girlfriend.Nobody is quite sure why Lars isconvinced that this doll is a realgirl. The film explores the psycheof Lars Lindstrom to uncoverhis past secrets and pain to findout exactly why Bianca has suddenlybecome such an importantpart of Lars’s life.Although at the start ofthe fi lm, the idea of Larsand his “girlfriend” is notacceptable to the residentsof his town, in the end hissituation gives them a senseof family and community likethey have never experienced.Lars and the Real Girlwill leave you with a bettersense of what love shouldbe. It will leave you wonderingabout the true meaningof relationships and willprovide you with a greaterappreciation for your own.Brothers Jack, Francis and Peter travelthrough India by train in this new film.ride a train through India in an attempt to achievespiritual enlightenment. Complexity comes fromthe characters; their reactions to one another, their dialogue, their back stories and their bodylanguage all come together to build people thatare worth caring for.Owen Wilson, a veteran member of the WesAnderson gang, plays Francis, the oldest of thebrothers who devises the entire spiritual scheme.Wilson, as always, is a treat to watch and consistentlymanages to be funny without even trying. plot twists, but the fi lm has aspectular cast that portrays thefi lm in an appealing manner. As advertised, the movieis about a woman namedIsabella (played by ReeseWitherspoon) who fights tofind out what happenedto her husband, a legalU.S. resident named El-Ibrahimi (played by actorOmar Metwally).Isabella’s search leadsher to legislator CorrineWhitman (MerylStreep), who deniesany knowledge of thehusband. Actually,Whitman herself approvedthe rendition ofEl-Ibrahimi to Egyptbecause, while the U.S.does not allow torture,Egypt does.Next enters Douglas Freeman, played by JakeGyllenhaal of BrokebackMountain fame. He isa CIA operative thatobserves the torture soas to get critical intelconcerning a terroristattack.W hile ever yoneelse seems so resolute intheir resolve,Freemanis conflictedaboutt h eimportance of informationagainst the evils of torture. In addition, there is a concurrentplot about the torturer,Igal Naor (played by actor AbasiFawal). His brutal techniquesmay get results, but they alsocreates estrangement in his familyand provoke extremist groups.Constant shifting betweenboth plots in Egypt and the U.S.takes the audience through astep-by-step process of how tomake a terrorist. The overall fi lm is entertainingwith a few stale moments, and the cinematography is easyon the eyes and ears, especiallyduring a suicide bomb scene. The acting was also good withspecial attention to Meryl Streep.

Staff WriterRetailers like Gamestop andWal-Mart have begun to get readyfor a tsunami of new videogamescoming out in time for the holidayseason. This includes some of themost highly anticipated games invideo-gaming history, and itall kicks off with the release ofGuitar Hero 3.For most readers GH’s maingameplay mechanic is commonknowledge. For the uninitiated,GH is a rhythm game akin tothe old 1980s game Simon, butwith a much greater emphasis onmusic (as though the title didn’tgive that away). The controller is a plastic guitarwith colored fret buttons, andas the song is scrolled on screenthe player must hit the right fretsto play the song. However, therehave been some new additionsand tweaks to the old formulain this fourth installment of thepopular franchise (I say fourth eventhough Guitar Hero Encore: Rocksthe 80s doesn’t really count as a fullgame in my opinion). The first and most welcometweak is the use of more masterrecordings of the included artists. The master tracks sound great andmake the experience of air guitar-ingto them even more realistic. In fact, the tracklist for this incarnation isthe most ambitious one seen in theseries yet.Tracks that were included inthis version include punk favoriteslike “Story of My Life” by SocialDistortion and a re-recorded versionof “Anarchy in the UK” by The SexPistols. In addition, there are classicrock cornerstones such as “Sunshineof Your Love” by Cream and“Mississippi Queen” by Mountain.Lastly, the game also features severalmodern rock tracks, most notably“When You Were Young” by TheKillers and “Knights of Cydonia”by Muse. There are a total of 71 playablesongs, of which 46 songs appearin the single player mode. Out ofall the playable songs in the game,51 are master recordings from theoriginal artists. New tracks are alsoset to be released via Xbox Live andPlaystation’s network. The game also features three bossbattles. The first two are againstTom Morello, lead guitarist for RageAgainst the Machine and Audioslave, and Slash, lead guitarist for VelvetRevolver and Guns N’ Roses. The lastone is against Lou, the devil. The graphics have also been givena dramatic facelift as the charactersappear more cartoon-like and thevenues are much more animatedwith stage divers, cops and therocking masses. However, there appears to bea significant amount of menu lagpresent in this version of the gameon all of the systems. The lag ismost noticeable in the store. The good news is that thislag is minimal and does little todetract from the fun of the coregameplay.Additionally, there are shortcutscenes when each set is completedand a new set is unlockedchronicling your band’s rise tostardom. It’s incredibly simple, butthe animations are funny. As for the gameplay, let mestate that the essential mechanicof the game still hasn’t changed.Multiplayer too is largely unchangedas face-off and pro face-off are stillpresent. However, there is also a new battlemode which pits players against eachother in what can best be describedas a Mario Kart style match wherethe first player to fail the song losesthe battle.Various power-ups, such as brokenstrings, lefty flips, and difficultyEugene Hütz, lead singer of Gogol Bordello, an eight-piece gypsypunk rock band, psyched up the enthusiatic audience withenergetic dancing and powerful music on Oct. 21 at The Roxy.OPENS FRIDAYAN AUTONOMOUS FILMS RELEASE HALCYON PICTURES LIMITED AND ADAM SHERMAN INC. Contributing WriterWhat do you get when youcombine five parts Shakespeare, twoparts Kafka and one part Warhol?Answer: the recipe for DramaTech’sproduction of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.Directed by Eddie Maise, thevintage regicidal tragedy is fusedwith a shade of modernism.Orthodox Shakespearean playsusually inspire thoughts of long soliloquies, lavish Kenneth Branagh setdesigns and thumb-biting. However, such expectations will not be met byDramaTech’s production. With highly stylized art directions, ensnaring sound effects andup-close sword plays, the productionis sim-ply dazzling.Given the small set and sittingarea of Drama Tech Theater, the playdecides to incorporate this factor toits advantage by taking a minimalistapproach to the set design. Decoratedwith simple yet versatile objects, the set can be easily molded into itsaccording designs between scenes. The flexible set also provides a senseof Kafkaesque surroundings stressingthe absurdity and supernaturalelements of the play. The small and well-acquaintedset has also been utilized to involvethe audience into the intensive atmosphereof the play. With actors enteringand exiting from the passagesbetween the seats and sword duelsbeing conducted feet away from theaudience, the patrons are no longerobservers but living and breathingparts of the show themselves.Sound effects and themu sic a l c omposit ionare also brilliant integratedin as an inseparablepart of the experiences, attributingto the extraordinarycomposer Klimchak. Much ofthe play is accompanied with primalpercussion suites and melodiesproduced by a variety of eclecticinstruments, each note as hauntingas the play itself.Aside from the modern tendenciesof the direction, the abridgedversion of the play still retains theuncorrupted Shakespearean integritiesand essential verses.“It’s like a sitcom, a story aboutlove and fate. I like to present theMacbeth couple as characters everyonecan relate to,” Maise said.As the plays revolves around theclassic themes of identity, fate andlove, its dated origin still appeals toaudiences of today. The caliber of the acting performancesdoes not dwindle either, even with the heavy emphasis ondirections. Leading actors GeneHullender and Laura Czyzewski areslightly shy of a professional troupe;however, their deliveries are highlyrespectable. The play premiered on Oct. 26,and received adulation from thecrowd.“Shakespeare wrote toentertain his time, [and]the director of thisplay did the same,”said Robert McAllister,a third-yearInternational Affairsmajor. If you still thinkthe theater is for yourgrandparents, thenallow me to stress thesword fights. Get yourselfpumped over theclinging sounds of clashingmetals; go see the bloodyskirmish over the sovereigntyof Scotland under the colorful lightfilter. Prepare to be overwhelmed bythe eloquent dialogue, action packedperformances, the meticulouslycomposed soundtrack and surreallyarranged visuals.Jigsaw’s latest victim, Rigg (LyriqBent), a member of the SWATteam we first got a glimpse of inSaw II. Much like the focus in thethird installment, this fi lm revolvesaround a series of successively interconnectedtests, through whichRigg must pass and grow, beforereaching a final test which is intendedto evaluate what Rigg has learned. These interconnected tests involveother subjects who generally are theones in danger of losing their livesinstead of Rigg.It is difficult to review thesetypes of moviesbecause theyhave so manydifferent components, andconsequentlyprovide severaldifferentmotivations toentice peopleto see them. Ifyou have cometo be a fan ofthe innovativetorture devices,or traps, thatJigsaw imposeson his test-subjects, this movie willnot disappoint you. New with thisinstallment are traps that pin testsubjectsagainst each other, which Ifound refreshing; they added a newlevel of intensity to a franchise withan already gripping reputation. Youalso get to witness Jigsaw’s first trap, potentially one of his most realisticand test-subject relevant (metaphoricallyspeaking) devices. One problem exhibited by thismovie is that with each progressiveinstallment the traps become moreelaborate and consequently lessrealistic. As a result of these newcomplexities in trap designs, thesuccess of these traps has come todepend entirely too much on therather arbitrary decisions of those“If future installmentswant to be successful, they should resortback to elementscontained in the firstmovies, namly moresimplistic traps andplot lines.”who they encompass. There are somany places where these traps can gowrong, based on how their subjectsinterpret clues and act, that after awhile you have to force yourself toabandon reality altogether to enjoythe movie. Not only that, but thesetraps are designed in such a way thathighly disfavors their subjects thatthese subjects are really nothingmore than simply victims, somethingwhich contradicts Jigsaw’sintended purpose and furthermorethe concept on which these moviesare founded.Another attribute for which theSaw franchise is known well is its plottwists. In that regard this movie doesnot disappoint, though priorinstallmentshave providedbetter. Unfortunately, thismovie does notentirely accountfor its outcome, and can berather difficultto follow andpiece togetherat times. Notonly that, buta lot of questionsthat arosefrom earlier movies go unanswered, despite much anticipation for suchexplanations.Despite many fl aws, Saw IVmost likely will experience the samefinancial success as its predecessors. Itsets up well for another installment, which should be expected the sametime next year. This installment hasdefinitely made me less of a Saw fan.If future installments want to besuccessful, they should resort backto elements contained in the firstmovies, namely more simplistic (andin turn, hopefully more realistic)traps and plot lines.Saw IV, which came out last weekon Oct. 26, is rated R for sequencesof grisly, bloody violence and torturethroughout, and for language.

Contributing WriterAcross the Universe was releasedacross the country on Oct. 12. Thefilm is a musical based on 34 differentBeatles songs. With a colorful castand mesmerizing cinematography, the movie should be the talk of thetown for some time. The film’s plot begins with a parallelbetween a working-class Britishman named Jude Feeny and a highschoolsenior named Lucy Carrigan.Jude soon leaves his modest life in anattempt to find his American father, while Lucy has to bear the burdenof a boyfriend gone to war.Soon Jude enjoys the Americanlifestyle, meeting Lucy’s brotherMax and befriending him quickly.Assuming a freer lifestyle in NewYork, Jude and Max move in to anapartment filled with musiciansand rogues. After the death of herboyfriend, Lucy follows suit. The characters in the film describea great deal about hippie culture inAmerica. With so many differentcharacters expressed in the film,Across the Universe deals with themany faces available in the ’60sand ’70s—the faces that producedthe counterculture of the VietnamWar.Many might be suspicious as tohow cover songs can compose a classicmusical. While the songs keep themusical integrity of the Beatles intactby full incorporation of the songs, the cinematography adapts the song intofully functioning sequences. The only difference betweenAcross the Universe and a musicalfilm like Rent or Phantom of theOpera is the fact that the music isnot original, but a composition ofmany different songs into a film. Inthat regard, rather than being thebackup soundtrack, the soundtrackitself takes the most basic elementsrepresented by the earliest of truemusicals, Oklahoma!: the musicis used toprogressthe plotand providetransi t i o n ,i n s t e a dof simplydescribingan event.Whilem o s tpeople aregenerallyturned offby the ideaof a musical, evenmoreso ofpaying for a ticket in the theater, thefilm can be enjoyable for people ofall backgrounds.People who admire the Beatlesfor their music and their sociopoliticalefforts will find the variousmessages behind the film inspiringand gripping. People who want tosee a film that includes standaloneentertainment without precedentshould find themselves involvedwith the plot and the circumstanceof the film very quickly. The content of the film can bevery subjective, since the hippieculture is promoted so vigorouslyand so frequently. Opponents whoview hippie ideals as radical may notappreciate the message of the film.Likewise, proponents of “free love”and peace movements can easilyagree with the film’s contents. With the hipster revolutioncome the ideas of sexual liberationand experimental drug usage—allobvious marks of the hippie movement. In many ways, the movie canbe both challenging and rewarding, and providing insight to moviegoersof all walks of life. The arrangement of the music isunderstandable to all Beatles fans.Well-known songs such as “ComeTogether,” “I Want to Hold YourHand” and “Lucy in the Sky withDiamonds” are in the film, as wellas some that only a true Beatles fanwould know, like “I Am the Walrus”and “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),”among others. The sound of the music is not thatof a typical musical—the sound isnot extremely accurate and full ofbelting and wailing like a Broadwayproduction. Instead, the sound isvery alternative and very interpretive.Much of themusic is intertwinedwith thecinematographyandchoreography. The visionof thefilm doeswell in encompassinghippieculture aswell. Asidefrom theuse of Beatlesmusic, the cinematography includes stronguse of experimental effects, such asinverted colors and things that makethe film seem more like an acid tripthan a movie with some friends. Inthis way, the film accurately depictsthe experimental culture of hippiesand the youth during the VietnamWar.However, the movie is notDirector Julie Taymor brings this new musical film to the big screen. StarringEvan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess, Across the Universe opened on Oct. 12.flawless. At times there are scenesthat seem conclusive without fullyexplaining the events that lead tothat moment. In other words, itfeels like there are deleted scenes ora director’s cut that will fully fleshout the details of the story.Another issue is the fact that thesongs’ renditions might not be whatmost people will expect. While manyfind the original radio sound qualitythe essence of the Beatles, the onstageperformances depicted in the filmmight distort too much of whatpeople like about the Beatles. While there are many controversies, the film is the very least interesting, and at the most life-changing.People that love the resistance to theVietnam War, especially like thatrepresented in movies such as ForrestGump, will surely appreciate Acrossthe Universe. While expectations formovies are understandable, Across theUniverse might circumvent them.“I was originally wary of goingto see Across the Universe becauseI generally do not enjoy musicalseither as drama or film. However, the movie has easily become one ofmy favorites, and I actually enjoyedits musical qualities. The cast’srendition of classic Beatles’ songswas absolutely incredible,” saidJosh Adair, first-year UndecidedEngineering major.A movie of true entertainmentvalue and quality, Across the Universewill definitely make a part of historyby its fluid integration of Beatlesmusic and its hippie depiction of anunforgettable era in America.

Adrien Brody plays Peter, themiddle child who seems to have commandeeredmost of the belongingsof the brothers’ late father. Althoughnew to the Anderson crew, Brodyfits in as though he’s appeared inevery fi lm.Jason Schwartzman plays Jack, the youngest. Of all the brothers,we are given the most clues aboutJack’s past and character. WhileFrancis drives the events that occurin the story, Jack frequently seemsto be at the helm of the emotionalmomentum.Schwartzman, like Wilson, is notnew to Wes Anderson’s shenanigans, given that Schwartzman started hisacting career by starring in Anderson’sexcellent Rushmore. Throughsome fateful cosmic alignment, Iwas lucky enough to sit down withMr. Schwartzman and hear abouthow he got his start.“I wasn’t planning on becomingan actor. I had dreamt of it, Isuppose, when I was a kid, but youknow it wasn’t really a possibility,”Schwartzman said.Originally interested in music,Schwartzman played drums in hisband Phantom Planet (most likelyremembered as that band that didthe theme song for The O.C., butshould be remembered for a wholeslew of great songs).“When I was 16…my mom rentedme Harold and Maude, The Graduateand Dog Day Afternoon…thatwas the first time that a movie hadmade me feel the way music did…I remember saying to myself, ‘I don’tknow what I’ll end up getting todo in my lifetime…well hopefullywhatever it is will make someone feelthis way,’” Schwartzman said.Schwartzman is also the starof The Darjeeling Limited’s shortfi lm prologue, Hotel Chevalier. It isthrough pieces like Hotel Chevalierthat we are able to learn more aboutJack than the other characters, butstill not enough to know exactlywhat makes him tick. The ambiguityand hazy details about the brothers’pasts are what give them theirauthenticity. The music from The DarjeelingLimited is likely something to beremembered. Juxtaposing Indianmusic with rock bands like The Kinksand The Rolling Stones sounds likeit could be a recipe for cacophony, but it is actually a wonderfully fittingsoundtrack.Strangely, The Darjeeling Limitedis a fi lm that, after the brothers areoff the train, feels like it is constantlyalmost over. Time after time we arepresented with events in the story thatseem as though they could arguablybe a logical closing point. And yet, the continuance throughthese faux conclusions fits with theunclear history of the brothers. It’sgood to know there are directors outthere that you can always count on;when you walk into a theater to seeone of their movies, you know whatyou’re getting yourself into.Hopefully Mr. Anderson (alongwith Mr. Wilson, Mr. Brody andMr. Schwartzman) will come backsoon to bring us yet another uniquecinematic experience. Her Whitman character is a cold, calculating politician that has noproblem ordering the rendition, andhence torture, of an Islamic familyman based on her own prejudicesdespite exonerating evidence. Whilethe character is an extreme crossbreedbetween President George W.Bush and Senator Hillary Clinton, this southern-accented antagonistcould only be portrayed so viciouslywell by Academy Award-winningStreep.This is not a family fi lm by anymeans. It has enough violence tointerest the action-prone, while thetragedy can make some cry.Contributing WriterAs the debut album of the bandArt in Manila, Set the Woods on Firehas a great reputation proceedingit. Layout EditorIt’s not easy to create somethingnew in the world of music, but ifany band is up for the challenge,it’s Mute Math, the New Orleansfoursome that’s set to rock the Tabernacletomorrow night. Althoughcompared to the likes of Radiohead,Sting, classic U2 and the Police,Mute Math eludes easy definition.Their sound is an ear-catching mixof atmospheric math rock and electronica, perfected by soul-searchinglyrics, powerhouse drumming andintricate yet simple melodies – theoverall effect is eclectic and brilliantlygenre-defying.“Part of the intent when we firststarted was just to create. We wantedto see what would happen if we triedto genuinely create music that weenjoyed listening to,” said lead singerPaul Meany.Darren King (drums, samples),Greg Hill (guitar) and Roy Mitchell-Cardenas (bass) joined Meany in thisexperimental effort, which startedas a side project among friends inthe family garageand grewfrom the musicians’differentmusical lovesinto a cohesivesound.Meany elaboratedon theirwide range of influences:“Overthe years, we’velistened to theBeatles, JimmyHendrix, RayCharles, StevieWonder, Paula Abdul … rap musicand music from the late ’80s andearly ’90s. Greg loved country music;I grew up on church music and sangSouthern gospel … all of that hassomehow surfaced in our music.”This mishmash of musical tastesis no doubt partly responsible forMute Math’s strong disparatesound, whichaccording toMeany, wasborn out of ashoot-fromthe-hip,anyth ing-goesmentality. “Itjust kind ofhappened …the only thingis we weren’tafraid to makeit different,”Meany said.Since thereleases of their Reset EP in 2004and their self-titled debut albumlast January, Mute Math has beentaking the music scene by storm. The band has appeared on ConanO’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel Liveand David Letterman, performedtheir single “Typical” backwardsin a popular YouTube music video, recorded the theme music for thesummer blockbuster Transformersand opened for acts like the DavidCrowder Band and the Fray.Despite the success, the bandhas no pretensions beyond makingstraight-up good music. When askedwhat makes Mute Math great, Meanyresponded with a laugh, “The factthat I have no answer to the question.I’m not a salesman, I’m just amusician.”And that’s why Mute Math isgreat – there’s no bull, just fourguys who love making great music. This is not a band to be missed, fullof creative talent and fun, chaoticenergy. Lastly, multiplayer cannow be played online against friendson Xbox Live or random opponentsvia Playstation’s network.GH3 is unique in that it does notseem tailored to the beginning GHplayer. The normal mode has beendescribed as hard mode minus theorange button. Hard mode is muchfaster this time around and thesolo riffs in many of the songs areincredibly tricky. The battle modein the end analysis is too short tobe fun, as it becomes a race to seewhich player can grab a power-upfirst. The boss battles also seem tolack substance.Overall these problems in thegrand scheme are very minor. Thegame is still fun and addicting andis a must have for veteran playersand adventurous newcomers tothe series.

Contributing WriterVery rarely does a reviewer get thetreat of listening to an album packedwith so much youthful energy, yetThe Eric Dodd Band, a three-piecerock outfit from Athens, has crafteda niche in acoustic southern rockwith their studio debut. The band’s self-released album,Heal, contains a smatteringof themes that resonatestrongly with anyonewho has experiencedthe emotional delugeconnected to the comingof age—love, lust, nostalgia, heartbreakand regret pervadethe album—but theoverarching themeis hopea n dopti -mism for the future.“The album is titled Heal becausethe songs are all about healing. They’re about searching for peaceand overcoming fear,” said frontmanEric Dodd.Dodd, who wrote all of the songson the album, involved himself withmusic at an early age.“I learned to play guitar when Iwas twelve; I grew up around musiciansand listening to Nirvana,”Dodd said. The album starts off withthe energetic “One Night,”featuring a combination ofsmooth vocals and seductiveguitar that’ll keep your headbouncing all the way through.“Goodbye Kiss,” a song aboutseparated lovers, follows suitwith another catchy melody.Dodd’s songwriting talentis showcased stronglyin “What I See,” themost desperateand emotionaltrack on the album. The song’smood is darkerthan the restof the album, but its natureas a standouttrack showsthat the band is capable of expandingstylistically beyond a traditionalacoustic rock formula. Dodd citesVan Morrison and Edwin McCainas major musical influences. The album’s catchiest and mostmemorable track is the nostalgic“Georgia Grove,” a classic storyof reminiscing about teenage loveand “all those summers…underthe moon.” Another track, “7 to6,” similarly carries the full energyof the album and shows off Dodd’simpressive vocal range. “4 of aKind” cleverly uses a playing cardmetaphor in a song about winningover a reluctant love interest.“The songs are somethingeverybody can relate to...there’s alot of nostalgia. Like in ‘GeorgiaGrove,’ memories of that first teenagelove never really fade away,”Dodd said.Above all else, Heal, as in itsclosing track, “Angels of Hope,”overflows with sentimentality, andits hopeful themes will resound withthe young and old alike. The Eric Dodd Band’s album Healis set for release on Nov. 8. There willbe an album release party at TastyWorld in Athens. More informationand sample tracks can be found onThe Eric Dodd Band’s website, www.myspace.com/ericdoddband.Online EditorOn the evening of Sept. 29 ina building on the corner of 17thand West Peachtree, with lightsdimmed and a reverbing bass linepermeating theaudience, fourmen walkedonto the CW’sCenter Stage. After a simple“we are MondoGenerator,” thequartet of rockersblared thehit track “LieDetector” offtheir newestalbum DeadPlanet.D e s p i t estarting overhalf an hourlate and havingtheir openingband apparentlyflake out,Mondo Generatormanagedto liven up thecrowd ratherquickly with hits like “So Low” and“Life of Sin.”A rock band with heavy metal andpunk influences, Mondo Generatorstarted in 1997 as a side-project byformer Queens of the Stone Age cofounderand bassist Nick Oliveri. Butafter leaving Queens, Mondo G hasbecome Oliveri’s main focus. The members of Mondo have rotatedthroughoutthe lastdecade andcurrently includesingerand bassist Oliveri, guitaristsIan Taylor andErnie Longoria,as well asdrummer Simon“Spud”Beggs.L a s tmonth’s showat Center Stagewas MondoGenerator’sfirst in Atlantaas a group. Theshow, co-headlinedwith theScandinaviang l a m-me t a lband Turbonegro, drew anextremely diverse crowd. The MondoCenter Stage rocked out when MondoGenerator performed on Sept. 29.This whole heightened appreciationis provided to you thanks toRyan Gosling. I was not expectingGosling to give such a phenomenalperformance as Lars, but he madethe character believable in a way onlyhe could have done.Gosling’s talent is evident and isthe driving force behind the film, but he is not the only one deservingcredit. Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider,Patricia Clarkson (Dagmar)and Kelli Garner (Margo) all givewonderful performances and do astunning job in the shaping of Lars’scharacter.Craig Gillespie directed thefilm and was unfortunate enoughto begin his big-screen career withMr. Woodcock. I haven’t seen Mr.Woodcock, so I’m unsure as to howbad it actually is, but hopefully Larsand the Real Girl makes up for thefact that he directed it.Gillespie did an excellent jobwith the direction of his newestfilm. He put all the right shots in allthe right places and helped either tointensify or lighten the mood with“The story may bea simple one, butthe message...is onethat should not beforgotten.”his camera angles. He did a good jobcoordinating with the writer, NancyOliver, when putting together thedifferent shots. The film was wellwritten, although at times it didseem to drag a bit. There is not muchaction or excitement, but the writingand the characters keep you fixatedthroughout the movie. The storyis filled with heart: heartwarming(story), heartfelt (characters) andhearty (laughs). There is much more to the moviethan the previews let on. The storymay be a simple one, but the messagebehind the story is one thatshould not be forgotten. But I amnot just going to tell you what themessage is…you’re going to have tofind out for yourself when you seethe movie.Whether you were a fan of Goslingin The Notebook or Half Nelson, his performance in Lars and the RealGirl will not be a disappointment. Itis a modern-day Pinocchio in someways: just a lonely man wishing thathis puppet were as real as his love forit. But although Bianca’s nose did notgrow in Lars and the Real Girl, yourlove for Ryan Gosling will when yougo to see it.

1010101001101010 TWO BITS 0110100110001010Two bits comments on need for new American leader:Paris HiltonWe should elect Paris Hiltonas Vice President of the UnitedStates of America. Like most ofmy fellow citizens, I am constantlydisappointed in the idiots we electto run this country. Koko the signlanguage gorilla, most species ofmold or a frozen block of spinachcould make better political decisionsthan President Bush. The idea thata frozen chunk of spinach could bea better leader than our presidentmay seem slightly absurd, and you’reright. The spinach would have to bethawed out first. The problem isn’t just with thecurrent president either. Every fouryears, a new crop of dolts managesto get their names on the ballot andwe have to decide which one is leastlikely to screw up our country. Allpresidential candidates have the flawthat when told as young childrenthat they could be the president ofthe United States someday, they weredumb enough to believe it.What we need is an averageAmerican for our president, someonewe can trust, someone that doesn’teven want to be the president—someonelike my father. My dad is theprototype American Joe. He’s fromthe Midwest, has a modest incomeand has plenty of free time now thatall of his children have grown upand left the house. He’s never beentainted by politics because he’s neverran for office, and he has no desire tobe president because it would requireleaving The Subdivision, which heonly does when he needs to get theriding lawn mower repaired. We need to come together as acountry and elect my father to thepresidency. If we can’t work out adeal to let him run the nation fromthe confines of The Subdivision, then we can just elect Koko thegorilla instead. It’s going tobe difficult to organize thisbecause we usually vote forpeople who take one of twopaths to political office.Path A: become a lawyer, then realize how patheticyour mundane white collarlife is and decide to passyour free time by gettingelected to office so you canscrew over everyone poorerthan you. Path B: have severalmillions dollars, marry aKennedy and decide to go intopolitics because you have sucha qualified background experiencein fighting off robots fromthe future, fighting aliens andbeing Danny DeVito’s twin.Since my father and Koko arenot lawyers, nor have they everplayed one on television, they’regoing to need another way to getname recognition, and this is whereParis Hilton comes into play.Paris Hilton is the Jackie Onassisof our generation. Paris is so famousthat if aliens were to make contactwith Earth, they would assume sheis our leader. She’s a dumber, sluttierversion of Princess Diana. If my father—orKoko the gorilla, whicheverone wins the primary—were to runfor president with Paris as vicepresident, their faces wouldbe splattered acrosse v e r ytelevisionstation and printed in everytabloid in the world.Paris doesn’t exactly meet theeligibility requirements because ofher age, so we’re going to have to lowerthe age restriction. Otherwise, if wewait until she turns 35, Paris won’tbe pretty enough for the paparazzito take pictures of her.Once in office, Paris Hilton willrestore the traditional vice presidentrole of doing absolutely nothingproductive.Normally, the vice presidentspends his time loungingaround the senate andattending a few statefunerals. Vice PresidentDick Cheney however, has been unusually activein his role, and hasspent his term promotingwars in the MiddleEast based onfalse premises, trying to denyglobal warmingand shootingold men in theface. We don’t needto worry about any ofthese things with VicePresident Hilton becauseshe doesn’t even knowwhere the Middle Eastis; when told that we’reexperiencing some of thehottest temperatures on record sheresponded, “That’s hot.” Paris Hiltononly uses lawyers for their intendedpurpose as defense attorneys insteadof for target practice.Besides being a better vice presidentthan Dick Cheney, Paris Hiltonwouldn’t bring any of the shockingsex scandals that occurred duringBill Clinton’s time in office. Therewould still be loads of sex scandals;they just wouldn’t be shocking. Thepublic is so used to Paris’s sex life thatit simply won’t be an issue when sheinevitably gets caught Lewinsky-ingthe ambassador from Latvia in theLincoln bedroom. We could even put Paris to gooduse. With my father or Koko thegorilla in charge, all of those absurdtravel and trade restrictions on Cubawould finally get lifted, and then VicePresident Hilton could lead a legionof spring breakers to Havana, wherethey’d spread democracy with an assaultof wet T-shirt contests. It’d bethe first time that CSPAN ever hadthe number one Nielsen rating.Additional plans include VicePresident Hilton helping to fightilliteracy by setting an example andfinally learning to read. We couldsex up other positions of the federalbranch as well. Attorney GeneralBritney Spears has a nice ring to it.There is one slight risk that we’dtake by electing Paris Hilton tothe vice presidency. Let’s say theunfortunate occurs and PresidentKoko accidentally chokes to deathon a banana. Then Vice PresidentHilton would take over as leader ofthe nation. In the midst of a nationaltragedy we’d have a semi-retardedchild of enormous privilege in chargeof the most powerful country in theworld—and we already know howwell that works, don’t we?This week on GTCN 20This week on GTCN 21monday, wednesday & friday7:00p On the FlatsGT Post Game Report7:15p GT Football Replay:Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech11:15p Student ProductionsNOVEMBER 2-8tuesday & thursday7:00p Student Productions8:00p Campus Calendar9:00p Student Productions10:00p Campus Movie Fest11:30p Student ProductionsNovember on GTCN 21mon., tue., thurs. wed. & fri.5:00p NASA Today6:00p ECE 63317:00p ISYE 66698:00p ME 62229:00p Tutor-Vision(mon. & tue. only)sat. & sun.5:00p It’s a Lifestyle6:00p AE 67657:30p ME 61019:00p Tutor-Vision(wed. only)8:00p The Jazz Documentary10:00p Gangster With aHeart of GoldWatch Tutor-Vision This Week!Tutor-Vision is a live tutoringcall-in program on GTCN 20!Tutors are available for help withCalculus, Chemistry, and Physics.Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech Rebroadcast! If you missed the game on Thursday, you can see the rebroadcastof all the action on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afterOn The Flats and the GT Post Game Report on GTCN 21!Tutor-Vision is brought to you by GTCN andthe Learning Assistance Program .Monday - Wednesday 9-10pCall 6-1811 with your questions! The Georgia Tech Cable Networkwww.gtcn.gatech.edu

Certain vote fans that were prepared to moshwere readily distinguishable fromthe Turbo fans sporting Sailor-esqueand Police-cap style headgear.Neither group of fans seemed toobject, however, to Mondo’s rathergritty live performance. Oliveri’searthy bass-lines and Longoria’swicked guitar moves brought a soundto the show that was much heavierthan the rather melodious punk rockriffs on Dead Planet.According to front man Oliveriduring an interview with the ‘Nique,“Black Flag and Black Sabbathare probably the two main bands”that have contributed to Mondo’ssound.Along with other influences likeCheap Trick, the band’s third andlatest album, Dead Planet soundsmuch more at home next to aNOFX CD than one from Queensof Stone Age.“Despite Oliveri’sclaims at being a‘low-key’ band, theirperformance wasanything but.”Even though Oliveri describesMondo Generator as “a rock and rollband,” he concedes “it’s definitelynot as main stream [as Queens]...it’s definitely more underground...definitely more low-key.”Despite Oliveri’s claims at beinga “low-key” band, their performancewas anything but. Mondo playedwith a great set, and despite not havingthe largest crowd ever, workedwith them to make it a fun andenjoyable show.“I always feel like we’re 50% musicand the crowd is 50%. It turns upa good show, we always have a bettershow when people are throwin’energy around and gettin’ into it.Sometimes the crowd is better thanwe are,” Oliveri said. While I personally am not the biggestfan of punk-rock, even thoughI’ve been known to go to a Pennywiseshow or two, I thoroughly enjoyedMondo Generator’s performance atthe Center Stage. I would love tosee the heavier side of Mondo thatcame out at Center Stage on theirnext album. And the name? “It was the nameof my amplifier,” Oliveri said.WWW.GATECHCLASSIFIEDS.COM110 APTS/LOFTS/ROOMS120 REAL ESTATEFOR SALE600 EMPLOY-MENT/JOBS700SERVICES800TRAVELFor rent-Studio apt.
