Theory IV Study Questions – Webern “Wie bin ich froh”
1. Using the matrix from your class notes on Constructing a Twelve-Tone Matrix, analyze the
row forms in Webern’s song Wie bin ich froh! (attached, and also in Burkhart Anthology, 6 th
edition, p. 482.) Circle and label each row form on the music. In addition, label the order
numbers (showing the position of each note in the row) using integers 0 -11, for at least some
of the row forms. The order numbers show the correct ordering of the piches that occur
simultaneously. The beginning of the piece is done for you below:
Hints: (a) The voice and piano parts use separate row forms most of the time, but occasionally
they are combined. Where does this occur in the form? (b) Sometimes the last note of
one row form is also the first note of the next row form. This is called “linking.” [See the end
first two row forms in the piano in the example above, for an example.]
2. Other things to think about in this piece:
a. Is there any consistency in the three-note sets that occur in the triplets in the piano part?
(You should know the answer from your last assignment.)
b. Certain pairs of tones come back together frequently, even in different row forms. One
example is E and Eb (4,3) How many others can you find?
c. Can you find any pattern or process in the rhythm of the piano part?
