Dear Parents
As this is our last Newsletter for the year I wish to thank you for your continuing support throughout another good year
for our School.
This is also my last Newsletter, and therefore, I would like to thank you, and all parents, for the support over the last 21
years. Our School has gone from strength to strength and that is the result of the combined efforts of our students,
staff and parents. Together we have achieved great things.
Please have a pleasant Christmas and safe holiday with your families, and I wish you and the School well for the future.

YEAR 3 – 7 PRESENTATION ASSEMBLY
The Year 3 – 7 Presentation Assembly will be held on Monday 5 December 2011 in the School
Hall/Gymnasium starting at 9.00am.
PRESENTATION DAY YEARS 8 - 11
The Secondary Presentation Day will be held on Tuesday 6 December 2011 starting at 1.40pm in the
School Hall/Gymnasium.
Please note Year 11 students receiving Awards have been invited to attend. Other Year 11
students may attend in Summer School Uniform.
Parents are invited to attend these end of year School Events.
Parking will be available on the Bottom Oval (through the Oakmont Avenue entrance only). Please follow
directions from staff on duty.

ROCKINGHAM BUS SERVICE
The School will continue with the Bus Service to the areas
between Port Kennedy and Rockingham in 2012.
The service has been condensed from three to two buses
which will be identified as follows:

SCHOOL OFFICE OVER THE HOLIDAYS
The School Office will be open during the holidays 8.00am to
4.00pm (closed for lunch 12.30pm to 1.00pm).
The Office will close at 11.30am on Friday 23 December
2011 and re-open at 8.00am on Tuesday 3 January 2012.
The Office will also be closed on Australia Day Thursday 26
January 2012.
EMAIL ADDRESS UPDATE
At various times it is beneficial to Email information or
reminders to parents about upcoming events, such as
Parent/Teacher interview evenings and meetings.
If you can provide an Email address, or need to change your
current Email, please send an Email to
admin@frederickirwin.wa.edu.au with your son‟s/daughter‟s
name and House Group or Class.
The address will only be used for contact from the School
and not passed on to any third party.
SECOND HAND BOOKSHOP 2012
Second Hand Bookshop : Secondary will be held on
SATURDAY 14 JANUARY 2012 FROM 9.00AM –
11.30AM at the School.
Students will need to bring their unwanted books, in a
plastic bag, well labelled with their name, to the School
on the last day of Term (Tuesday 6 December 2011).
Current Year 11 & 12 students may bring in their books when
they have finished their exams. Any books handed in must
be intact, and this includes any CD‟s originally purchased as
part of the book. Students should note that books that have
been handed in and are not sold would not be returned.
Books that are not on the 2012 Booklist will not be accepted.
SECONDARY ASSISTANCE SCHEME
As in previous years, the Department of Education and
Training Secondary Assistance Scheme forms will be available
to eligible parents at the Second Hand Bookshop.
Applications close Friday 9 March 2012.
SEMESTER 2 PORTFOLIOS AND REPORTS:
PRIMARY / SEMESTER 2 REPORTS: SECONDARY
Primary Semester 2 Reports and Term 4 Student
Portfolios will be sent home with the students NEXT
TUESDAY. Your child will be keen to discuss the contents of
their Portfolio and their personal achievements. The students
are to be congratulated on their overall progress and on their
positive attitude. Students in Years 1-6 (2011) will be
required to return their 2011 Term 4 Portfolio to their
class teacher at the beginning of Term 1 2012.
Along with their Semester 2 Report, students in Year 3, 5 and
7 will also receive their NAPLAN report.
Secondary Semester 2 Reports will be posted to mailing
addresses on or around Friday 16 December 2011.
FINAL 2011 FEE ACCOUNTS
The final Fee Account for this year will be sent home with
students on Friday 2 December 2011.
The Account is due for payment on Friday 16 December
2011.
Any families who have not paid or made payment
arrangements with the Bursar by the due date, should be
aware that a late penalty of $55.00 (GST included) may be
imposed.

These students were nominated and elected by their peers
for the qualities they have displayed in School over a period
of time and in a wide range of activities. They are to be
congratulated on being elected and were presented to the
Primary Assembly last Friday. They will be formally
commissioned at an Assembly at the beginning of Term 1,

CONGRATULATIONS
Lauren MAGEE 6S who won a Silver Medal for her Floor
Routine at the State Club Gymnastic Championships held
recently in Perth.
Kate ANDERSON 9J2 has been selected by the WA Cricket
Association in the WA Female Under 15 Team which will
compete in the 2011/2012 Under 15 Championships in
Sydney during December.
Ashley LAZENBY 9J1 achieved a B+ for his Third Grade
AMEB Cello Exam this Term. Evelyn DODS 5R achieved a
B+ for her Second Grade AMEB Cello Exam also this Term.
Lilly WATSON 4B achieved Honours with Distinction for her
Australian Teachers of Dance Ballet exam, which was the
highest mark in her Dance School.
The FHE Cup was played recently at Perth Hockey Stadium.
The Under 15 Women‟s Team won the girls competition
defeating NSW 1-0 in the final. Brittanny MACNAB 10R2
and Kiah WILLIAMS 9G2 were part of the winning team.
The Under 16 State School Boys team came second being
narrowly defeated by Malaysia in the finals. Jake
WILLIAMS 10G3 was a team member.
Brittanny MACNAB 10R2 has been selected in the Under
18 Women‟s State Indoor Hockey Team and Jake
WILLIAMS 10G3 has been selected in the Under 18 Men‟s
State Indoor Hockey Team to compete in Brisbane in January
2012.
Kiah WILLIAMS 9G2 has been selected in the Under 15
Women‟s State Indoor Hockey Team to compete in Perth in
January 2012.
Matthew ELWELL 9G1 competed in the recent Parkland
Heights 5km and Fun Run in Baldivis. Matthew came third
in the Open Men‟s 5km in a time of 18 minutes and 9
seconds.
WA JUNIOR MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD
Nearly 400 of the State‟s best young mathematicians from
over 43 schools took part in the Western Australian Junior
Mathematics Olympiad (WAJO) at the University of Western
Australia on Sunday 5 November 2011.
Students from Years 7, 8 and 9 tackled challenging
mathematical problems individually and in teams in order to
identify our best problem solvers.
Frederick Irwin sent a team of Year 9 students who were
successful. They won the WA Team Award for Excellence for
the best performance by a non-metropolitan School.
Samuel ALSOP 9R1 won an individual Merit Award and
Tristan TAYLOR 9R1 won the University of Western
Australia Award for Excellence by gaining a perfect individual
score.

9R1, Jonathon GRIGG 9E2 and Tristan TAYLOR 9R1.
ENGINEERING IN SCHOOLS PROJECT
In 2011 a group of Year 9s were again invited to take part in
the Curtin University “Engineering in Schools Project”. The
project involved students researching a developing region in
the world and coming up with a sustainable and economic
initiative to improve the living conditions and way of life of
the people living there. Student groups, simulating a team of
engineers worked together every Wednesday afternoon
during Terms 2 and 3, to produce a model, written report,
power point and oral presentation.

The two projects judged to be the best by each School were
presented at a Presentation evening at Curtin University
along with the posters and models prepared by all other
groups. The „Third World Warriors‟ and „Tanzania‟s Secret
Angels‟ represented Frederick Irwin in an outstanding
manner and their Power Point presentations were delivered
with confidence, composure and excellence.
Both teams who presented during the evening are to be
congratulated. Team members of the „Third World Warriors‟
received the Award for the most outstanding oral
presentation on “Micro-distillation”.
Thank you to all students who took part in the project and
who learned valuable lessons about team work, task
allocation and time management.

THE VIRTUES PROJECT
The virtue for this fortnight is Flexibility. Flexibility is being
open to change. It means not always having to have your
own way. It is being open to the opinions and feelings of
others. With flexibility, you are willing to change your mind.
If something doesn‟t work, you try a new way. Flexibility is
making changes for the better.
Why Practise It?
Without flexibility, people keep doing things the same old
way when new ways are needed. They become rigid. They
get angry and upset when things don‟t go their way and try
to control other people. When you are flexible, you adjust
and adapt. You bend like a tree in the wind. You keep
making positive changes.
How Do You Practise It?
When you practise flexibility, you let go of bad habits and
learn new ones. When you see a need for change, look
inside and find the virtue you need. Then practise it little by
little, day by day. Try new, creative ways to get things done.
Accept the things you cannot change. Go with the flow.
When you are flexible, you enjoy surprises.
BITS AND PIECES FROM FATHER NOEL
We live in a topsy, turvy world of views and actions…
We want to “Keep Australia Beautiful” and yet our
motorways, bike paths and footpaths are littered constantly
with rubbish, in particular broken glass.
We want people to be honest but theft from building sites by
everyday sorts of people continues.
We want to protect our young people on the roads and yet
old and young alike “run the lights” and refuse to drive within
speed limits or wear bike safety equipment.
We want illicit drugs out of the reach of our children and yet
adults keep producing new drugs to get around legislation.
We want fidelity in marriage and yet freedom of speech
allows popular magazines to instruct us on how to have
affairs…..
We have people in positions of trust who violate that trust.
We want a Saviour…… as long as He / She doesn‟t demand
too much of us.
Christmas gives us a chance to reconnect with a God who
had, has and will have only one set of values given to us in
love. God is shown in the baby Jesus, who although born into
this world stayed clearly focused on a life with God and God‟s
values at its centre, through the support of his earthly family.
There is no contradiction in God‟s message….. He loved,
loves and will love us, even though we may not at this time
know much about Him. While we stumble at many of the
hurdles that life places before us, and stray from God‟s
way….. because of Jesus, we can come back into that loving
relationship at any time…. That‟s not a contradiction… it‟s a
fact. Perhaps you can start this Christmas?

Summer Uniform
If you require extra length on your summer dress, please
bear in mind, this takes around 6-8 weeks to arrive. So
please order as soon as possible.
Volunteers Wanted for 2012
Can you spare a few hours each week?
This would involve helping in all aspects of the operation of
the Shop during open hours, on one day a week, a maximum
of 4 hours.
Parent‟s willing to volunteer by assisting in the Uniform Shop
should contact Jan Burbidge at the School.
CHAIR BAGS FOR 2012
For 2012 some students will need new chair bags. Students
moving from Pre-Primary to Year 1, from Year 3 to Year 4
and those moving from Year 5 to Year 6 will need a new size
chair bag. As we now offer an embroidery service, please call
into the Shop to place your order.
As we will be purchasing new primary furniture for 2012, the
sizes of the chairs have changed.

GREENFIELDS DENTAL THERAPY CENTRE
Greenfields Dental Therapy Centre will be closed from
Tuesday 20 December 2011 for the Christmas Holiday period,
and will re-open on Thursday 19 January 2012. The Clinic will
also be closed on Thursday 26 January and Friday 27 January
2012.
Dental emergencies during these times can be directed to
Dental Health Services, 43 Mt Henry Road, Como.

Students from the School are advised that they will no longer
be seen at the Greenfields Centre after the Christmas
holiday. They will however continue their dental care at the
new Dental Clinic situated at Meadow Springs Primary
School, Bellerive Pass, Meadow Springs upon its opening.
The new Dental Clinic is expected to be open by the
commencement of Term 1 2012. To allow for the possibility
of a delay in opening, we recommend that parents check the
Clinic stamp carefully on all appointment cards received early
in the new year.

SURFING AUSTRALIA
Boys Have a Go Surf Day – Sunday 29 January 2012
Each year „Boys Have a Go Day‟ is held to encourage boys to
have a go at surfing. Surfing Australia and the Department of
Sport and Recreation are encouraging children to try new
and innovative sports to help children to develop healthier
life style choices. This event is specially designed for boys to
try surfing, all equipment is supplied & fully accredited surf
coaches. Event supported by Surfing Australia, Department
of Sport and Recreation, Sunsmart and Healthway. Included
is a 1.5 hour surfing lesson with professional surf coaches.

Girls Go Surfing Day – Sunday 22 January 2012
Every year „Girls Go Surfing Day‟ is held to encourage girls to
have a go at surfing. This event is held Australia wide and
last year over 8000 girls participated and we expect an even
bigger turn out this year! Girls Go Surfing Day is a fantastic
opportunity for girls to try surfing in an all-girl environment;
this event is supported by Healthway, Sunsmart and the
Department of Sport and Recreation. Included is a 1.5 hour

showbag, which includes a t-shirt, fabric beach bag & lots of

PORT BOUVARD SURF LIFESAVING CLUB : QUIZ
NIGHT
It is being held at The Club Rooms, Pyramids Beach - Port
Bouvard on the Tuesday 6 December 2011.
Support the Volunteer Lifesavers who donate their time to
patrol our local beaches and make it a safer place to swim,
by Donation of Prizes for the Quiz and Raffles.

UWA : UNDERSTANDING THE TISC APPLICATION PROCESS
As the year draws to a close and Year 12 students will receive their WACE results soon, UWA is hosting several seminars to assist
students in what can be a confusing and stressful time. Understanding the TISC Application Process is for Year 12 students and
their parents looking for more information on how to structure TISC preferences to help achieve their goals, what the process is for
admission into university, and important dates to keep in mind in the January/February 2012 period. Admissions Centre and
