Dear Parents
Newsletter
Website: www.frederickirwin.wa.edu.au
Wednesday 26 October 2011 was the last day of class attendance for our Year 12 students.
As always, our Year 12 students conducted themselves in a very responsible way. After their Thanksgiving Service in
the morning they had a good time at the beach and then returned at the end of the School day to receive their Leavers‟
Book. The Presentation Evening was an enjoyable last formal School occasion for our Year 12s, their families and our
staff. We are grateful for the Year 12 gift to the School – four picnic tables (two for Primary and two for Secondary)
which will be of benefit to students for many years.
We are all very proud of our Year 12s and their contribution to our School. We wish them well for their external
examinations which started last Monday, and for their future lives. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Our Year 10 Outdoor Education students are on their camps this week, next week our Year 5‟s will be at Rottnest and in
Week 5 our Year 4 students will have their Zoo sleepover and our Year 11 Outdoor Education students will have their
camps. All good things for the education of our students, and I am very appreciative of the work of our staff in
organizing these activities, and for the support of our parents.
We welcome to our School Mrs Peta Allen, Year 7, and Mrs Susan Greenup, Education Support, who are helping us now
that Mrs Hill and Mr Heppenstall have taken on different roles.
With best wishes until next time.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Jessica PENNY 12G1 who has had her
art work selected to be on display in the Year 12 Perspectives
Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Tiana
MATTHEWS 12E2 also had her work shortlisted which is
highly commendable.
The Exhibition will be on at the Art Gallery of Western
Australia from Monday 16 January 2012 – Wednesday 25
April 2012.
Alana KILDEA 11G2 represented the School at the Lion‟s
Club in Mandurah on Tuesday 25 October 2011. She was
asked to answer two impromptu questions and then deliver a
prepared speech. She chose as her topic “The social network
that is not that sociable” which looked at the consequences
of our over-reliance on mobile phones, twitter and facebook.
Alana delivered her talk with aplomb. As a result she won the
evening‟s competition and progresses to the next stage in
2012. Congratulations, Alana.
ORACY
Once again our Year 8 students have excelled in ORACY. The
assessors commented on the very high standard of the
presentations that is evidence of much hard work and
endeavour. Additionally, each year the assessors are
impressed by the courtesy extended by both the staff and
students. Well done to all of the Year 8s and their English
teachers; even though this is a nerve wracking experience,
you can be proud of your achievements.
The following students achieved an overall assessment of
Outstanding for their ORACY presentation, which requires
SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
In July, one Year 9 and Year 10 and 11 students were invited
to register for the National Qualifying Exams in Science.
These exams are the stepping stone to the International
Science Olympiads which are the „Olympic Games‟ for Science
students. Separate exams were held in biology, chemistry
and physics and all students sat the same exam no matter
what their age. The exams test the ability of students to
solve problems as well as test their understanding of science
concepts. These exams are very demanding and students
could choose to sit one, two or all of these examinations.
Over 3200 Australian students took part in the competition. A
High Distinction is awarded to the top 10% of students.
Top performers in these exams are offered one of 72 places
in the Australian Science Olympiad Summer School that will
be held at Monash University in Melbourne in January 2012.
This is a two week intensive program and is an opportunity
for talented students to study with others passionate about
science.
Each year the very best of the Summer School students are
selected to represent Australia at the International Science
Olympiads for Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
As a result of their outstanding achievement Kaitlin FIORI
THE VIRTUES PROJECT
The virtue for this fortnight is Creativity. Creativity is the
power of imagination. Creativity is a way to develop your
special talents. It is seeing something in a new way, finding
a different way to solve a problem. Creativity is using your
imagination to bring something new into the world.
Why Practise It?
Without creativity, life would be boring. There would be no
inventions or advancement in the world. Things would just
stay the same. We wouldn‟t have cars, planes, computers,
dance, Outdoor Education Studies, music. The arts bring joy
to the world. Science bring cures for disease and new ways
to get things done. Creativity helps us to be all we can be.
How Do You Practise It?
You practise creativity by developing your gifts to the fullest.
Find out what interests you and what you are good at. Learn
and practise, so your talents will get better and better. Do
ordinary things in creative ways. Expose yourself to beauty
in nature and in the arts. Be open to inspiration. Remember
to take time for dreaming.
BITS AND PIECES FROM FATHER NOEL
A student passed the comment, when we were talking about
faith issues, that being a Christian was just an opinion and
that she didn‟t share the same opinion. It‟s an interesting
perspective and I was a little saddened that after several
years at the School, this student had not allowed her
Christian Studies to do any more than just wash over her.
I went on to explain to the student and the rest of the class
that faith was a lived experience. It invaded the whole of
your life and was not just an opinion about belief and custom
from a particular perspective. The conversation that
developed amongst the students was rich with insights, while
the original questioner played with her hair and paid no
attention. She had given her opinion which I was prepared to
listen to and engage with, but I was not given the same
respect. I wonder if she does the same on Facebook or in
sms communication?
Thankfully, this is not the response of the majority of the
students at our School. They are respectful in their
disagreements and appreciate the chance to explore their
opinions and beliefs in a positive environment. In my classes
we establish early that it is a place of honour. I will honour
them and their points of view if they will honour mine.
When Jesus dealt with the religious authorities of his time,
they too engaged in a “hit and run” form of questioning. Did
they really want answers or only want to confuse, negate
communication and stand proud because they‟d given their
opinion?
Think about it next time you decide to “bag” someone‟s
faith?
Do you “bag” it because you don‟t want to know the answers
or because the answers might change your perspectives and
give you better understanding of the meaning of your life?
SIBLINGS
Any family with siblings awaiting placement within the School
MUST keep the School up to date with latest copies of
School Reports for siblings. This is very important for siblings
waiting for all years. if you have any questions or queries
regarding the reports, please contact Mrs Jo Chilvers at the
School.
FESA – BUSHFIRE SAFETY
During the bushfire season we all like to go on holidays,
visiting favourite campsites, beaches and national parks. It is
important that all families develop a Bushfire Survival Plan to
prepare for the possibility of bushfire. For further information
and suggestions visit www.fesa.wa.gov.au
