Big Picture Question: What did God show the Egyptians
and the Israelites? God showed that He is the one true God.
Bible Passage: Exodus 5:1-6:13; 6:28-11:1
Christ Connection: God saved His people from physical
captivity in Egypt as He would one day send Jesus to save His
people from spiritual captivity.
Moses Confronted Pharaoh
TEACHER BIBLE STUDY
Moses’ appeals to Pharaoh to let the Israelites go were not well received. Time and time again, God hardened
Pharaoh’s heart, and Pharaoh refused to let the people go. Wait a second. God hardened Pharaoh’s heart? Wasn’t
God the One wanting the Israelites out of Egypt? Why would He do such a thing?
God did not contradict Himself. He has a special purpose behind everything He does. Moses confronted Pharaoh
and said, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: Let My people go, so that they may hold a festival for Me in
the wilderness.” Note Pharaoh’s response: “Who is Yahweh that I should obey Him by letting Israel go?” (Ex.
5:1-2).
Pharaoh did not recognize God’s authority. The Egyptians worshiped false gods like Ra, the sun god, and Hapi, the
god of the Nile. God explained His plan to Moses and Aaron: “I will harden Pharaoh’s heart and multiply My signs
and wonders in the land of Egypt. Pharaoh will not listen to you, but I will put My hand on Egypt and bring the
divisions of My people the Israelites out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment. The Egyptians will know
that I am Yahweh when I stretch out My hand against Egypt, and bring out the Israelites from among them” (Ex.
7:3-5).
The plagues were acts of judgment designed to show the Egyptians who God is—and they learned their lesson.
Read Exodus 8:19; 9:20,27; and 10:7.
As you teach children about God’s mighty works and Moses’ obedience to God, invite them to think about Jesus.
God called Moses to be His servant. He was a great servant who obeyed God and led the Israelites out of slavery.
The Bible says that Jesus is greater than Moses. (Heb. 3:3) Jesus was a servant who obeyed God perfectly and
suffered to free His people from sin.
THE BIBLE STORY
Moses Confronted Pharaoh
Exodus 5:1–6:13; 6:28–11:1
After God called Moses to save His people from Egypt, Moses and Aaron went to talk to Pharaoh. “This is what
Yahweh the God of Israel says,” they said. “Let My people go, so that they may worship Me in the wilderness.”
But Pharaoh responded, “Who is this Yahweh? Why should I obey Him? I do not know Him! Israel may not go!”
Pharaoh was angry because he thought Moses was just trying to stop the people from working hard. He made work
even harder for the people of Israel. “You are slackers!” he told them. “That is why you want to go to worship your
God.”
The Israelites were not happy with Moses. “You are making trouble for us,” they said. Moses went back to God
and asked, “Why did you send me? You haven’t saved your people at all!”
God again promised that the Israelites would be free. “Pharaoh will not listen to you, but you must do exactly what
I say. I am going to show Pharaoh who I am,” God said. God promised to fight for His people.
Moses and Aaron returned to Pharaoh. They performed a miracle to show that God was with them. Moses’ staff
turned into a snake. Pharaoh still would not listen to them.
God knew that Pharaoh would not let the Israelites go. God explained, “Pharaoh’s heart is hard: he refuses to let
the people go.” So God sent a set of plagues, or punishments, to the Egyptians. He judged their sin.
First, God turned the water in the Nile River into blood. The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that
the Egyptians could not drink from it. Blood was everywhere! But Pharaoh turned and went into his palace. He
would not let the people go.
Second, God sent frogs into Egypt. Aaron stretched his hand over the waters of Egypt, and frogs came up and
covered the land. “Ask your God to take the frogs away,” Pharaoh said. “Then I will let the people go.” The next day,
God removed the frogs. When Pharaoh saw that they were gone, he refused to let the people go.
Third, God sent gnats into Egypt. Gnats are small flies that bite people and animals. Pharaoh’s magicians said,
“God did this,” but Pharaoh’s heart hardened, and he would not let the people go.
Fourth, God sent flies into Egypt. Flies were everywhere! But no flies swarmed where the Israelites lived. “Let My
people go!” “I will let them go,” Pharaoh said. Then he changed his mind. He did not let the people go.
Fifth, God caused all the livestock in the fields—the horses, donkeys, camels, and sheep—to die. All of the
livestock in the fields of Egypt died, but none of the Israelites’ animals died. Pharaoh’s heart was hardened again.
He did not let the people go.
Sixth, God sent boils, or sore spots, all over the people in Egypt. The people were covered with sores. Pharaoh’s
heart was hard. He did not listen to Moses, just like God had said.
Seventh, God sent a hailstorm to Egypt. It was the worst storm they had ever seen! Every plant was smashed and
every tree was broken. “Let My people go!” “I will let you go,” Pharaoh said. But as soon as the hail stopped,
Pharaoh would not let the people go.
Eighth, God sent locusts, or grasshoppers, into Egypt. They ate every living plant. Moses said, “This is what God
says: Let My people go!” “Go worship your God,” Pharaoh said. But as soon as the locusts were gone, Pharaoh
refused to let the Israelites go.
Next, God sent darkness to cover the land. For three days, no one could see anything, but the Israelites had light.
Pharaoh was unwilling to let them go. “Get away from me!” Pharaoh told Moses.
God told Moses, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, Pharaoh will let you go.”
Israelites out of slavery. The Bible says that Jesus is greater than Moses. (Hebrews 3:3) Jesus was a servant who
Our Prayer for You:
We pray that you will come to know what being a true servant is all about. As you serve
the kids this week at Life Bible Church, we pray that you will be able to model true
servanthood for the next generation.
WELCOME TIME
As the kids arrive, ask them questions that might help you get to know them better. This is the
time that makes or breaks how welcome a child feels and whether they will come back or not! Be
friendly! :)
EARLY ARRIVER ACTIVITY [9:45-10:00] (begin as soon as children enter; this activity is not
nessessary for ALL children, it just gives the early arrivers something to get started on)
Jump, Jump!
Tape a start line. As kids arrive, encourage them to see who can jump the farthest. Mark their spots with
masking tape, having them write their name on the tape
.
Say: “Jumping reminds me of a frog. That reminds me of today’s Bible story, where a whole bunch of
frogs suddenly appeared.”
ENGAGE ACTIVITY [10:00-10:10] (begin @ 10:00; even if children haven’t finished the early arriver activity;
this sets up the Bible story for the day)
Face Off
Review the previous Big Picture Questions by playing a game. Form two lines facing each other. Ask the first
pair of kids a previous Big Picture Question; the first one to answer correctly earns a point. Continue down the
line until all pairs have had a turn “facing off.” You may choose to play again and allow kids to change spots in
their team’s line. Sample Big Picture Questions and answers:
Who created everything? God created the world and people to bring Him glory.
What is sin? Sin is breaking God’s law and separates people from God.
Why does sin separate people from God? God is holy and separate from sin.
Who is in control? God is all-powerful, sovereign, and good.
Why did God choose Abraham? God chose Abraham to be part of His covenant plan to send Jesus
to earth to bring us salvation.
Who always keeps His covenant? God is always faithful to keep His covenant; people should
always trust God.
How can we show we believe God’s plan? We obey even when He asks us to do things we don’t
understand.
How did people know God’s plan? God communicated His plan to people in different ways.
What can stop God’s plans? Nothing can stop God’s plans becuase they are always perfect.
What new name did God give Jacob? God changed Jacob’s name to Israel, which became the
name of God’s covenant people.
Who is always with us? God is always with us, even when things happen we don’t understand.
Why did God send Joseph to Egypt? God sent Joseph to Egypt to establish a remnant.
Say: “Last time our Big Picture Question was why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His
people from captivity. Today we will see how God used Moses to rescue His people from captivity.”
TRANSITION TO LARGE GROUP [10:10]
LARGE GROUP BIBLE STORY & WORSHIP [10:10-10:40]
Note: As students come back to the classroom, it is a good time to distribute snack as you
take prayer requests and praises.
PRAYER TIME [10:45-10:55]
Use the class Prayer Journal to write down any prayer requests that the kids might have, as well as any
prayer requests that have been answered! Take time for the kids to praise God in prayer and lift up the
prayer requests mentioned. Allow 1 or 2 students to pray and then pray to close out the time of prayer.
Remember, kids are learning to pray by your example. The importance and energy you put
into prayer will be directly reflected in your class!
DISCUSSION STARTER VIDEO [10:55-11:05]
Show the “One True God” video
Ask:
Has anyone experienced that before?
What would you do if a friend came to you and said that?
Do you have friends who believe something or someone other than Jesus
can save them?
Help kids think about the Big Picture Question and how they would explain it to a friend. Tell kids that
anytime they need help knowing what to say to a friend who doesn’t believe in God or that Jesus died
for our sins, they can ask their parents, Life Bible Kids leaders, or other Christian adults for help.
BIBLE STORY REVIEW & BIBLE SKILLS [11:05-11:15]
Lead kids to open their Bibles and scan Exodus 5:1–6:13; 6:28–11:1. Review the Bible story by asking kids to
take turns sharing one sentence from memory per turn. Kids may refer to their Bibles if needed. You may choose
to use a ball or other object to pass or toss to indicate whose turn it is. Continue until the Bible story review is
complete and everyone has had a turn sharing something about today’s Bible story.
Guide kids to refer to the timeline to review the chronology of God’s story.
Ask:
What did God show the Egyptians and the Israelites? God showed that He is the one true God.
Do you think God showed that He is the one true God?
In your life, has God revealed that He is the one true God?
Who does the Bible say is a greater servant than Moses? (The Bible says that Jesus is greater than Moses.
[Hebrews 3:3] Jesus was a servant who obeyed God perfectly and suffered to free His people from sin.)
You may opt to review how to become a Christian using the guide below. Always encourage kids who have
questions about becoming a Christian to talk to you, another teacher, their parents, or another Christian.
God rules. God created and is in charge of everything. (Gen. 1:1; Rev. 4:11; Col. 1:16-17)
We sinned. Since Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Rom. 3:23; 6:23)
God provided. God sent His Son Jesus to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. (John 3:16; Eph.
2:8-9)
Jesus gives. Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again so we can be
welcomed into God’s family. (Rom. 5:8; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Pet. 3:18)
We respond. Believe that Jesus alone saves you. Repent. Tell God that your faith is in Jesus. (Rom.
10:9-10,13)
KEY PASSAGE ACTIVITY [11:15-11:20]
Play this game as individuals or teams. Kids attempt a task to earn points. They can see the point number, but
they will not know the task until they select the paper. Sample instructions:
Read the Key Passage from the Bible. (1 point)
Say the Key Passage in your own words or tell what the passage is teaching us. (5 points)
Say the Key Passage while balancing a book on your head. (7 points)
Quote any previous unit’s Key Passage. (10 points)
Say: “We will continue to see next week exactly how God delivered the Israelites from the Egyptians.
Don’t forget to practice the Key Passage at home.”
Key Passage: “I will take you as My people, and I will be your
God. You will know that I am Yahweh your God, who delivered you
from the forced labor of the Egyptians.” Exodus 6:7
SINK IN ACTIVITY [11:20-11:30]
Plague Actions
Form two teams. Each kid will take a turn acting out one of the plagues for their team to guess. Guide kids to
select a piece of paper to determine which plague they will act out. Allow sounds for plagues involving animals.
Sample ideas:
Nile River turned into blood: draw water from the river
Frogs: hopping, ribbet sound
Gnats: swatting at the gnats
Swarms of flies: act like flying around, rub hands together, make a buzzing sound
Sickness and death of livestock: making sound of farm animal that is sick (cow, horse)
Boils: scratch arm or leg
Hail: hold hand over head to protect from hail
Locusts: pretend to eat everything
Darkness: act like you’re shining a flashlight
Say: “We had fun trying to act out and guess the plagues, but the plagues were not fun to experience.
The plagues were a punishment for the Egyptians because they worshiped false gods and refused to follow
God. What did God show the Egyptians and the Israelites? God showed that He is the one true God.”
