Big Picture Question: How does God feel about sin?God hates sin and punishes sin.Achan SinnedMarch 3Bible Passage: Joshua 24:15Christ Connection: Joshua was a representation of Christ, leading the Israelites to victory in overcoming Canaan as Jesusleads us to victory in overcoming the world.Kinder-2ndTEACHER BIBLE STUDYWhen the Israelites conquered Jericho, God told them not to take anything. Everything in the city was to bedestroyed and set apart for God. Achan must have assumed no one would notice if he kept a few things for himself. The cloak was beautiful, and he sure could use some pieces of silver and a bar of gold. No harm, no foul. Right?Wrong. God had commanded complete obedience from the Israelites. God knew what Achan had done, and Hisanger burned against all of the Israelites.Joshua sent spies into the land of Ai. There were only a few people in Ai. Joshua sent a few thousand men to fight, but during the battle, the Israelites ran away in fear. About 36 of them were killed. Joshua knew something waswrong. He suspected God had lied to the Israelites about protecting them against their enemies. He cried out toGod, “Why did you bring us across the Jordan to die at the hand of the Amorites?” (Josh. 7:7).Joshua had it all wrong. God explained that the Israelites had sinned against Him—that was why they had not wonthe battle. The next morning, God revealed that it was Achan who had sinned. Joshua brought Achan forward to confess hissin. Achan’s possessions were destroyed, and Achan and his family were stoned to death. The Israelites coveredtheir bodies with a large pile of stones as a reminder of the consequences of sin.God hates sin. (See Prov. 6:16-19.) God deals with sin by punishing it. We are all sinners. Here’s the bad news:“For the wages of sin is death,” but here’s the good news: “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus ourLord” (Rom. 6:23). We all deserve to die for our sin, but Jesus came to bear the consequences for us by dying onthe cross in our place.

THE BIBLE STORYAchan SinnedJoshua 7When the people of Israel attacked Jericho, God gave them one rule: Destroy everything. Keep nothingfor yourselves. But one man, Achan (AY kuhn), disobeyed God. God was angry with the Israelitesbecause of Achan’s disobedience.Joshua sent men from Jericho to a city called Ai (AY igh) to spy out the land. The men went and spiedout Ai. They came back and said, “Do not send all of the men to attack Ai. There are not very many peoplethere; you only need to send two or three thousand.” So about 3,000 men went to Ai. They ran away fromthe men of Ai, and about 36 of them were killed. The men were very afraid.Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the ground before the ark of the Lord. The elders did the same thing, and they all put dust on their heads. Joshua asked God, “Why did you bring us across the Jordan Riverjust to have us killed by these people? We should have been content to stay out of the promised land! When the other people living in this land hear that we ran scared from the men of Ai, they will surround usand attack us!”The Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! Israel has sinned and disobeyed My covenant. They have takensome of the things I told them not to. This is why they cannot defeat their enemies. I will no longer be withyou until you remove from you the things I told you to destroy.”God continued, “Go and tell the people to make themselves clean. In the morning, they should presentthemselves by tribe. When I pick out a tribe, that tribe should present itself clan by clan. I will select oneclan; that clan is to come forward family by family. I will select one family, and that family should comeforward man by man. You should punish the man who is caught with the forbidden things. Destroy himand everything he has because he has disobeyed God.”Joshua got up early the next morning. Israel came forward tribe by tribe, clan by clan, family by family, and man by man. Achan was chosen from all the people. He was the one who had taken the forbiddenthings.“Confess to the Lord. Tell me what you have done,” Joshua said to Achan. “Don’t hide anything fromme.”Achan replied, “It’s true. I have sinned against God. When we overtook Jericho, I saw a beautiful cloak, some pieces of silver, and a bar of gold. I wanted them very badly, so I took them. They are buried in theground in my tent.”Joshua sent messengers to Achan’s tent to collect the things. They laid them before Joshua. “Why haveyou caused trouble for us?” Joshua asked. “Today God will trouble you!” The people of Israel killed Achanand his family. They covered their bodies with a big pile of rocks. God was no longer angry with Israel.Christ Connection: The punishment for Achan’s sin was death. It seems harsh, but the Bible says thatthe wages of sin is death. (Romans 6:23) Because we sin, we deserve to die too. Jesus came to die in ourplace. When we confess our sins and trust in Jesus, we are forgiven and saved from spiritual death. Our Prayer for You:This week is the Gospel message. We pray that as you prepare your heart to share theGospel with the kids this Sunday, He will begin softening the hearts of the kids, evennow. We pray that you will be BOLD with the Gospel this week!

WELCOME TIMEAs the kids arrive, ask them questions that might help you get to know them better. This is the timethat makes or breaks how welcome a child feels and whether they will come back or not! Befriendly! :)EARLY ARRIVER ACTIVITY [9:45-10:00] (begin as soon as children enter; this activity is notneccessary for ALL children, it just gives the early arrivers something to get started on)Worse Thing EverAs kids arrive, provide each with a piece of paper and encourage them to draw something they hate or don’tlike. Give examples, such as foods, chores, classes, and so forth. Right before starting the session, let the kidsshare some of their responses.Say: “Hate is a strong word for something we really don’t like. Today, we are going to talk about somethingeven God hates.”ENGAGE ACTIVITY [10:00-10:10] (begin @ 10:00; even if children haven’t finished the Early Arriver Activity;this sets up the Bible Story for the day)StolenChoose a volunteer and give him a coin. The volunteer must set down the coin somewhere in the room. Theother kids should be able to see where he places the coin. Invite the volunteer to step just outside the room orface a corner away from the other kids. Quietly choose someone to take the coin. Once the “thief” returns to hisseat, invite the volunteer to return. Explain that the volunteer may accuse one of the kids of stealing the coin. Ifhe chooses incorrectly, the accused can say, “I am not the thief, but I know who is.” The accused may then pointout the real thief or falsely accuse someone. The volunteer can choose to believe the one falsely accused andchoose the one suggested or choose someone else entirely. If he chooses the correct thief, he may choose thenext volunteer. If he chooses incorrectly, the one falsely accused is the next volunteer.Say: “ A man in today’s Bible story took something that didn’t belong to him. We will find out what happened tohim.”TRANSITION TO LARGE GROUP [10:10]Note: Please be sure to stay with your class to help children stay focused and listen to thelesson. Note: As students come back to the classroom, it is a good time to distribute snack as youtake prayer requests and praises.PRAYER TIME [10:45-10:55]Use the class Prayer Journal to write down any prayer requests that the kids might have, as well as anyprayer requests that have been answered! Take time for the kids to praise God in prayer and lift up theprayer requests mentioned. Allow 1 or 2 students to pray and then pray to close out the time of prayer.Remember, kids are learning to pray by your example. The importance and energy you putinto prayer will be directly reflected in your class!BIBLE STORY REVIEW [10:55-11:05]Encourage the kids to find Joshua 7 in their Bibles. Help them as needed.Ask: In which division of the Old Testament is the Book of Joshua found? (History) Which books of the Biblecome before and after Joshua? (Deuteronomy, Judges) What stories have we talked about from Joshua inthe last few weeks? (The Israelites Crossed the Jordan River, The Conquest of Jericho, and Achan Sinned)Use the Timeline to show kids today’s Bible story. Review the Bible story by invite two “readers” to play the parts.Ask them to stand across the room from one another and take turns telling their story. (There are two scriptsprovided, one for “Joshua”, one for “Achan”)Say: “God knew people would sin, but He loves people. That’s why He sent Jesus. Like Achan, Jesus died. However, Jesus was not guilty of anything. Jesus died the death we deserve. He took our guilt and paid for oursin.”Show the Big Picture Question Poster.Say: “ Our Big Picture Question reminds us why sin is so serious. How does God feel about sin? God hatessin and punishes sin.”KEY PASSAGE ACTIVITY [11:05-11:10]Make sure the Key Passage is visible for each child. Read the verse together.Say: “Joshua saw what sin did to the people and their relationship with God. How does God feel about sin?God hates sin and punishes sin. By the end of His time as leader, Joshua knew sin would be punished. Hewanted to make sure he and his family served only God.”The whiteboard has underlined blanks representing the letters to each word in the Key Passage. Invite the kidsto name a letter. If the letter is in the passage, write it above the lines where it would go. If not, put that letter inthe box at the bottom. Allow another kid to choose a different letter. The kids are not allowed to say the words. They can only give letters until the Key Passage is complete. Once the game is over, repeat the Key Passagetogether several times.

Key Passage: “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve theLORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the godsyour fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the godsof the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and myhouse, we will serve the LORD.Joshua 24:15SINK IN ACTIVITY [11:10-11:20]Stick HouseProvide each kid with six craft sticks.
