Another eco-friendly activity in the project site promoted by Pekkay Tree crop
foundation is coir pith composting. Coir pith is a waste product obtained during the
extraction of coir fiber, which gets accumulated, and causes pollution of water bodies and
atmosphere. To obviate this problem, a green technology called coir pith composting
units promoted through formation of Shelf Help Group. Every month, around 105 tonnes
of coir pith is being converted to compost fertilizer. The production of organically rich
coir pith compost is about 5.6 tones/month and the number of families benefiting is about
11 and their monthly profit is about US $ 826. The procedure being followed to prepare
the coir pith compost is depicted in fig 3. In this procedure, they also use cow dung slurry
and with daily two times of watering, acts as a boosting energy to the microorganisms.
This compost consists of rich nutrients and is used as a soil conditioner, surface mulch/
rooting medium.
