IMMACULATA UNIVERSITY
Changes to Gabriele Library
When you walk into the library this Fall
you may notice a few changes. Over the
past years we have been observing how
students use the library building and our
resources. Book and periodical use has
declined while use of the electronic
resources has exploded. We have seen
that students come to the library to work
in collaborative groups or in search of a
quiet place to study. To accommodate
these various needs we have begun the
creation of an Immaculata University
Learning Commons.
The first phase of the plan was the
building of the Immaculatte Cafe. The
second phase of the creation of the
Immaculata University Learning
Commons began this Summer. Here is a
brief look at what has happened.
• Academic and bound journals have
been moved to the second floor.
• Popular magazines and movies have
been moved to the ground floor.
• The IU Writing Center has moved
from Loyola Hall to Library first floor
• New carpeting has been installed on
the first floor and the main
staircase.
• A designer has been hired to develop
plans for the first floor.
• Plans have been approved to
upgrade the study rooms with
wireless connected monitors.
• At the front desk students trained by
the ATS Department will provide
software technical support for
students.
Our idea is that the Learning Commons
will encompass the whole building and
will provide IU students with the
resources and spaces they need to
accomplish their work and be successful
students. We have designated the second
and ground floors as quiet study floors
with computer workstations and spaces
for individual work. The first floor is
being designed to provide spaces for
collaborative work and casual work and
study areas. The six study rooms in the
building are being equipped with large,
flat screen monitors that will be
wirelessly connected to the Learning
Common’s laptop computers through an
Apple TV network . This will allow a
group of students to use the rooms to
stream content, watch reserve DVDs, and
create collaborative projects.
Gabriele Library cont.
During the Fall semester the third phase of the development of the Learning Commons will take place. We
anticipate that the plans will be finalized and the furniture and equipment ordered to complete this new
academic space. Late in the semester we expect the construction of the space to take place and the furniture to
be delivered. Also, because so much of a student’s work takes place virtually we plan to test and then roll out a
new library website that will complement the new Learning Commons.
We know that things will be a little inconvenient for a while and we ask that you bear with us. Our goal is to
create an inviting, welcoming, energetic, and flexible academic environment for you to work and study. It is
being designed to be a place that meets the needs of all of our students, whether they are on campus and off
campus. We intend for it to be a place where you will find the resources you need, whether they be electronic
journals, physical books, or helpful people, and to help you succeed in achieving your academic goals.
Dr. Lillian Eyre, Associate Professor of Music
Therapy, has edited a
volume titled
Guidelines for Music
Therapy Practice:
Mental Health, which
is now available
through Barcelona
Publishers. The 25
chapters, three of
which were written by Dr. Eyre, provide
clinical applications for various populations
and settings treated by music therapists.
Other volumes in the series include Pediatric
Care, Adult Medical Care, and
Developmental Health. Dr. Eyre believes that
these volumes will provide students with a
secure knowledge base upon which they can
develop their own creative applications of
music in the therapeutic clinical process.
They will prove to be an extremely valuable
tool in teaching and in clinical work. Dr. Eyre
also attended “Frontier of Trauma Treatment”
offered by Bessel van der Kolk from
July 8 – 12, 2013 in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Sr. Monica Acri,
IHM, Psy.D.,
Assistant Professor
of Psychology,
continues to serve
as a consultant for
the Marriage
Tribunal of the Diocese of Metuchen. Sister
also attended a premier showing of the
documentary “Anonymous People” on May
23 at Holy Family College, and participated in
the panel discussion led by former US
representative, Patrick J. Kennedy. The
documentary and discussion were in support
of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction
Equity Act for improved mental health care
for recovery. Sister hopes to be able to
arrange a future showing of the documentary
on Immaculata’s campus.
Sr. Donna Kelley. IHM, Psy.D., Associate
Professor of
Psychology,
attended a
seminar hosted by
PESI on Diagnostic
and Treatment
using the DSM-‐5 in
King of Prussia on
May 6, 2013. Sr. Donna also attended a
Leadership Conference on Addictions in
Chicago, IL from July 15-‐17. The conference,
Recognition, Recovery, and Renewal was
hosted by Guest House.
Dr. Sharon
Richardson,
Education Division
Associate Faculty,
served on the
planning
committee for the Lehigh University Annual
Special Education Conference that took
place in May.
