1. <strong>IMS</strong> SCIENTIFIC DAY – General Information<br />
When: May 28 th , 2013, Approximately 8:15 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.<br />
Location: Chestnut Residence & Conference Centre, 89 Chestnut St. Toronto,<br />
ON (Just North <strong>of</strong> City Hall)<br />
2013 Bernard Langer Lecturer: Dr. Jeffrey S. Mogil, PhD<br />
Dr. Mogil is currently the E.P. Taylor Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pain Studies at McGill<br />
<strong>University</strong> and the Canada Research Chair in the Genetics <strong>of</strong> Pain (Tier I). He is a<br />
recognized authority in the fields <strong>of</strong> sex differences in pain and analgesia, and<br />
pain testing methods in the laboratory mouse. His lecture is entitled “Mice are<br />
People Too: Translation in Pain Research from Genetics to Social Modulation.”<br />
Information for Students:<br />
• All MSc and PhD students must, as part <strong>of</strong> their degree requirements,<br />
participate at least once in the Alan Wu Poster Competition. Students can also choose to compete in the Laidlaw<br />
Manuscript Competition. Students who choose to compete in both competitions will be required to submit both an<br />
abstract and a manuscript by March 15 th 2013 5pm. Those shortlisted for the Laidlaw Manuscript Competition will<br />
deliver an oral presentation at <strong>IMS</strong> <strong>Scientific</strong> <strong>Day</strong> and will, therefore, not be required to submit a poster for the Alan Wu<br />
Poster Competition.<br />

• For all <strong>IMS</strong> students, attendance at <strong>Scientific</strong> <strong>Day</strong> counts towards completion <strong>of</strong> the MSc 1010 Y / MSc 1011 Y seminar<br />
requirement. If you cannot attend, your supervisor must submit an explanation for your absence to<br />
pa.medscience@utoronto.ca no later than May 1 st , 2013.<br />
2. LAIDLAW MANUSCRIPT COMPETITION – Submission Deadline: March 15 th , 2013 5pm<br />
Students shortlisted for the Laidlaw Manuscript Competition will be invited to give an oral presentation at <strong>IMS</strong> <strong>Scientific</strong><br />
<strong>Day</strong>. The following awards are conferred for exceptional manuscripts and presentations:<br />
• Laidlaw Prize – Clinical <strong>Science</strong><br />
• Laidlaw Prize – Basic <strong>Science</strong><br />
• Laidlaw Prize – Honourable Mention<br />
Laidlaw Manuscript Instructions:<br />
Manuscripts for this competition must reflect work completed in the graduate program – published or in press work is<br />
eligible. Manuscripts should be submitted electronically as a PDF file in the format <strong>of</strong> a letter to “Nature: International<br />
Weekly Journal <strong>of</strong> <strong>Science</strong>”. This is the mandatory format for this competition (even if the content <strong>of</strong> the manuscript has<br />
already been published in other journals). Supplemental material is not permitted.<br />

If your manuscript contains multiple authors, a letter from your supervisor confirming that the majority <strong>of</strong> the work<br />

3. ALAN WU POSTER COMPETITION – Abstract Submission Deadline: March 15 th , 2013 5 pm<br />
The Alan Wu Poster Prizes are presented to the most outstanding basic science and clinical science abstract and poster<br />
presentation. All Alan Wu poster competition participants are expected to prepare an abstract and brief poster<br />
presentation (work must have been completed within the graduate program).<br />
Alan Wu Poster Competition Instructions:<br />
• Students must prepare a poster no bigger than 3 feet high by 6 feet wide to be displayed at <strong>Scientific</strong> <strong>Day</strong> on May 28 th ,<br />
2013 at Chestnut Residence & Conference Centre<br />
• Poster boards will be provided and groups will be assigned on <strong>Scientific</strong> <strong>Day</strong><br />
• No more than one poster board is permitted per student<br />
• Poster should be designed in a landscape orientation<br />
• Posters will be divided into Clinical and Basic science categories<br />

• All posters should be presented in a way that is accessible to any scientist since poster judges may not be content<br />
experts<br />
• Posters are divided by into groups <strong>of</strong> no more than 10 students; each group is assigned two judges<br />
• Students are allocated 7 minutes for their oral presentation (5 minute talk plus 2-minute question period)<br />
• Following the presentation, judges rank the abstract, poster, and presentation<br />
• Based on the ranking, a finalist from each group is selected<br />
The following awards are conferred for exceptional posters:<br />
• Alan Wu Poster Prize – Clinical <strong>Science</strong><br />
• Alan Wu Poster Prize – Basic <strong>Science</strong><br />
• Alan Wu Poster Prize – Honourable Mention<br />
Alan Wu Poster Competition Abstract Instructions:<br />
• 1 page (or less), single spaced, 1” margins<br />
• Arial 11 point font<br />
• Includes background, purpose, hypothesis, methods, results, conclusions<br />
• Abstract Title (in ALL capital letters), student and supervisor’s names are included at the top <strong>of</strong> the page<br />
• Indicate your abstract category: Clinical or Basic <strong>Science</strong>. Please note: Community and global health, as well as medical<br />
education and bioethics, are considered in the clinical category.<br />
All abstracts will be published in the <strong>IMS</strong> <strong>Scientific</strong> <strong>Day</strong> Booklet that is distributed at <strong>Scientific</strong> <strong>Day</strong> in May.<br />

4. THE MEL SILVERMAN MENTORSHIP AWARD – Call for Nominations<br />
The Mel Silverman Mentorship Award is presented to an <strong>IMS</strong> faculty member who<br />
has served as an outstanding mentor and role model for graduate students, and<br />
who has contributed in a significant way to the <strong>IMS</strong> graduate program.<br />
Candidates for this award must be nominated by at least two <strong>IMS</strong> students.<br />
Nominations include a detailed letter in support <strong>of</strong> the candidate, as well as a<br />
copy <strong>of</strong> the candidate’s curriculum vitae. Additional letters <strong>of</strong> support are<br />
welcome.<br />

5. ADDITIONAL <strong>IMS</strong> SCIENTIFIC DAY AWARDS<br />
SIMINOVITCH-SALTER AWARD<br />
Dr. Lou Siminovitch<br />
Dr. Robert Salter<br />
The Siminovitch-Salter Award was established in 1995 to<br />
honour the contributions <strong>of</strong> Dr. Lou Siminovitch and Dr. Robert<br />
Salter to the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Science</strong>. It is awarded<br />
annually to a graduating <strong>IMS</strong> PhD student who has made<br />
outstanding scholarly contributions. The endowment<br />
represents contributions by Mount Sinai Hospital, the<br />
<strong>University</strong> Of Toronto Department Of Surgery and the <strong>Institute</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Science</strong>. The recipient is nominated by the <strong>IMS</strong><br />
Graduate Coordinators.<br />
WHITESIDE AWARD<br />
The Whiteside Award was established in 2003 to honour the contributions <strong>of</strong> Dr.<br />
Catharine Whiteside to the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Science</strong>. It is awarded annually to a<br />
graduating <strong>IMS</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> <strong>Science</strong> student who has made outstanding scholarly<br />
contributions. The recipient is nominated by the <strong>IMS</strong> Graduate Coordinators.<br />
RONCARI BOOK PRIZE<br />
The Roncari Book Prize was established in 1995 to honour the memory <strong>of</strong> Dr. Daniel<br />
Roncari. It is presented to an <strong>IMS</strong> student who has made significant contributions to the<br />
academic experience <strong>of</strong> graduate students, based on the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>IMS</strong><br />
Graduate Coordinators.<br />
SARA AL-BADER MEMORIAL AWARD<br />
Dean Catharine Whiteside<br />
The Sara Al-Bader <strong>Memo</strong>rial Award was established by the <strong>Institute</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Science</strong> to honour the memory <strong>of</strong> Dr. Sara Al-Bader, a<br />
PhD student at the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Science</strong> whose thesis was<br />
entitled: <strong>Science</strong>-Based Health Innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa.<br />
The award is presented annually at <strong>Scientific</strong> <strong>Day</strong> to an<br />
international doctoral stream student who shows exceptional<br />
academic promise. The scholarship will be awarded based on the<br />
recommendation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>IMS</strong> Graduate Coordinators.<br />

THE <strong>IMS</strong> COURSE LECTURER AWARD<br />
This award is presented annually for a sustained contribution <strong>of</strong> three years or more to excellence in lecturing in an <strong>IMS</strong><br />
graduate course. Nominations should be submitted to dir.medscience@utoronto.ca by March 1st, 2013.<br />
THE <strong>IMS</strong> COURSE DIRECTOR AWARD<br />
This award is presented for a sustained contribution <strong>of</strong> three years or more to excellence in the teaching, administration,<br />
and development <strong>of</strong> an <strong>IMS</strong> graduate course. Nominations should be submitted to dir.medscience@utoronto.ca by<br />
March 1st, 2013.<br />
