Heartland Crime Stoppers encourages members of the community to assist local law enforcement agencies in the fight 

against crime by overcoming the two key elements that inhibit community involvement: fear and apathy. 

Put simply, Crime Stoppers is a three-part approach to solving crime. Heartland Crime Stoppers relies on cooperation 

between the police, the media, and the general community to provide a flow of information about crime and criminals. 

By guaranteeing a caller’s anonymity, Crime Stoppers allows the caller to give information in a positive atmosphere

When you dial our toll free tip line at 1-800-226-TIPS, a Crime 

Stoppers operator receives your tip information. There is no caller ID, and 

conversations are not recorded. Heartland Crime Stoppers receives the 

information and then passes the information to the investigating officer.

The Polk County Sheriff ’s Office and Heartland Crime 

Stoppers, Inc., announce a new program that rewards anonymous 

callers for alerting law enforcement to the presence of illegally 

possessed firearms. 

Through this program, citizens are encouraged to turn 

in felons with guns and report anyone who has a stolen gun, is 

illegally in possession of a gun, or provide the location of a gun that 

has been used in a crime. 

It is illegal for a convicted felon to possess a firearm. And it is 

illegal to possess a stolen gun, an illegally altered gun, or a gun that 

has had its serial numbers removed. 

Anyone who has information can call Heartland Crime 

Stoppers at 800-226-TIPS (8477) and report a person illegally 

possessing a gun. If an arrest is made and a gun is recovered from 

the information received, the tipster will be eligible for a $500 

reward. All calls will remain confidential and no one will ever ask 

any caller for their name or phone number. Callers will not be 

required to testify in court on related cases.

commit violent crimes. And we know that there are plenty of folks 

out there who know who the bad guys are in their area—they know

Unsolved Home Invasion Robbery 

Winter Haven Police need your help in solving a home invasion robbery that occurred at 1373 

3rd St. NE on October 4, 2010 at approximately 10:14 p.m. 

The victims answered a knock at their back door to find a young black male who asked if he 

could use a phone. The victims did not know the suspect, but allowed him inside and handed him 

a cell phone to use. The suspect held the phone for approximately two minutes until three more 

B/M’s ran into the apartment. One of the suspects brandished a small black handgun that he pointed 

at both victims. The suspect with the firearm had a black bandana covering his face. Both victims 

advised that the suspect holding the firearm stated, “Give it up” and began grabbing for their purses 

that were in sight in the living room area. Both victims’ purses were taken. All four suspects appeared 

to have fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction. 

Suspect # 1 - B/M, 20’s, approximately 5’11, 180lbs, low 

hair cut, white t-shirt, blue jean pants, lighter skin tone. 

Suspect # 2 - B/M unknown age, heavy set, short dreads, 

black bandana covering face, brandished black handgun 

in right hand. No clothing description. 

Suspect # 3 - B/M, nothing further. 

Suspect # 4 - B/M, nothing further.

Information sought in vehicle burglary 

Polk County Sheriff ’s Office detectives are asking for the public’s help in a vehicle burglary investigation. 

During the early morning hours of September 

16, 2010, a vehicle burglary occurred in the area 

of Linda Drive and Galloway Road, Lakeland, in 

which the victim’s identification and bank “Visa” 

debit card were stolen. 

Shortly after the incident, the pictured suspect 

used the stolen debit card at several locations in 

Lakeland and Plant City for unauthorized retail 

purchases. 

The vehicle the suspect was driving at the time 

the images were recorded is a white Nissan Frontier 

‘crew cab’ pickup truck. The white male suspect is 

wearing a dark colored baseball cap and an Atlanta Braves t-shirt in the photographs.

Auburndale Police Seeking Information in Homicide 

From the 

The body of Larry Whitest, age 57 of 4715 A 1st St. W in Auburndale 

was found in the early morning hours of February 8, 2010 in an

M URDER 

Files open field in front of GTI, Inc. 1250 Hobbs Road in Auburndale. 

Mr. Whitest was dressed only in shorts. A shirt and hat were 

found near his body. There were no obvious signs to indicate how he died. The 

medical examiner has determined his death was not contributed to natural 

causes. Police are not releasing the exact cause of death due to the on-going 

investigation. 

Police do not have any leads in the case and are asking for help from 

anyone with information. Anyone who knows Mr. Whitest or has knowledge 

of his whereabouts from Sunday morning, February 7, 2010 through Monday 

morning, February, 8, 2010 when he was discovered deceased, is urged to 

contact police.

Hit-and-Run Case Resulting in Death 

Polk County Sheriff’s Traffic Homicide Investigators are 

seeking the public’s help in an ongoing hit-and-run investigation 

that resulted in the death of an elderly man. 

At approximately 8:05 p.m. on Sunday, February 21, 

2010, PCSO deputies responded to a report of a hit-and-run 

traffic crash at 3300 Old Bartow Eagle Lake Road in Bartow, 

during which a 73-year-old pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. 

The vehicle was traveling south on Old Bartow Eagle 

Lake Road, south of Griffin Road. At the same time, the 

victim, Carlos Fernandez Sr., age 74, was walking south on 

Old Bartow Eagle Lake Road, transporting a stove on a dolly 

along the edge of the southbound lane. The front of the vehicle 

struck Mr. Fernandez. The driver did not stop. 

Mr. Fernandez was transported to Lakeland Regional 

Medical Center in critical condition. He has been hospitalized 

since the night of the crash, and on October 8, 2010, Mr. 

Fernandez died as a result of 

injuries he sustained in the crash. 

The vehicle is described as a 

GM (General Motors) passenger 

car, possibly mid 80’s to mid 90’s 

model. The color of the car has 

been described as “light colored,” 

possibly beige, grey, or blue. The 

car was described as being in poor 

condition. The car was last seen 

traveling south on Old Bartow 

Carlos Fernandez Sr. 

Eagle Lake Road. 

Mr. Fernandez was well known in the area, frequently 

walking the same route where he was struck by the car. 

Deputies are hoping someone saw something suspicious or has 

some information that will lead to an arrest in this case.

Help Lakeland Police Identify This Burglary Suspect 

Lakeland Police are investigating 

a burglary that occurred at DC 

Sports Bar, 1015 S Florida Avenue, 

on October 6, 2010. The suspect is 

described as a white male, 5’9” tall, 

approximately 180 pounds.

regarding this burglary, or anyone

INFORMATION SOUGHT IN ARMED ROBBERY 

Polk County Sheriff ’s Office detectives 

are seeking the public’s help in a business 

robbery. 

At approximately 7:00 a.m., on Monday, 

October 18, 2010, an 

armed black male wearing 

a mask confronted a delivery 

driver outside of Dino’s 

Drive-Thru restaurant, 

2929 Havendale Boulevard, 

Winter Haven, and 

then ordered him inside. 

Once inside, the 

suspect ordered the driver to the ground 

and then, still armed with a handgun, 

confronted the business owners and 

demanded money. Fearing for their safety, 

the victims complied and the suspect fled 

the business through the rear door in a 

northeast direction. 

The suspect is 

described as being approximately 

5’5” tall and 

weighing approximately 

135 pounds. He was wearing 

a blue pullover hooded 

sweatshirt, blue jeans, and 

white tennis shoes. He 

wore a mask on his face.
